I was not expecting this place to blow my mind on a random Tuesday evening. But after trying to finish a very large burrito from here I am happy to report, that yes, life will surprise you from time to time. Felt like a shrimp burrito tonight and a quick Yelp check said they make good ones. I called in to order a regular shrimp burrito, no beans, more rice and some onions and bell peppers to add dimension to the shrimp and rice only filling. Janet the lady who took my order on the phone was easy to communicate with and the burrito was exactly as per my order. When I arrived to pickup they told me to help myself to the salsa bar. Now I've been to enough Mexican places to know that the salsas are not always noteworthy. But since it was my first time here I picked up both the red and green salsa to try, and I'm so glad I did! Got home and opened up the foil and I can honestly say the size of this burrito intimidated me. I mean it was so big that I couldn't really hold it up to eat . I actually opened it up and ate from it by making small bites out of all the goodness. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The pico de gallo was ok. The onions and bell peppers added good flavor and texture. But the shrimp, it was huge and plentiful! I tried both the salsas and was surprised by how good they were. The red I ate with the burrito and the green was perfect with the tortilla chips. For the price this has to be the best value burrito I've had in a while. There is no seating inside this very small business, but it has 2 tables set out in the front for anyone who wants to eat there. They've even put up a shade to cover over the tables. I honestly wish this place remained a secret so it wouldn't get crowded and food quality wouldn't change, but I also know this place deserves all the recognition and praise it can get. read more

This place is only a 5 min drive from my house so it's def one of my to go spots for a burrito whenever I crave one. I always get the super burrito with carne asada, grilled! Ask them to grill it so the tortilla is extra crispy. It makes the burrito even better! For $15.50, you really get what ya paid for. The thing is like the size of my forearm! I've ordered from this place several times and usually have a good experience, which is why this was so disappointing. I ordered 3 super burritos, one of them with no rice and light beans. I always order one without rice because they usually put way too much rice for my liking. This has never been an issue before. This time, the no-rice burrito came out literally half the size of the other two burritos and was hella light -- it honestly felt like a kids burrito. No rice should not account for more than half of the burrito! Which is my point exactly as to why I order no rice. I called the restaurant, and the only thing they were willing to do was refund the burrito. While I appreciate the refund, I spent my entire lunch break getting this food, and now I have nothing to eat. A refund doesn't really fix that. Growing up in Oakland, I always enjoyed Mexican food there, and when I moved to Hayward a few years ago, I was always looking for a new Mexican restaurant to eat at. I've been to a few spots here in Hayward, and they were merely decent. But the other day, I stumbled upon an Instagram video of a woman reviewing this restaurant and just from the video alone, I knew I had to try it. Upon arrival, the service was great, it was quick and the cashier up front was nice. The restaurant had a nice ambience to it, there's decorations all over it and there's some cool artifacts around as well. I ordered a Super Burrito, which comes with your choice of meat, Avacado, beans, rice, pico de gallo, etc. I removed pico de gallo and kept everything else. From first sight, the burrito is big. Opening it, it looked great and from the first bite, I immediately fell in love with the food. It was delicious, packed with flavor, and had good portions of everything inside of the burrito. I honestly think the burrito could be shared for two, I only ate half. The rice & bean to meat ratio I thought was good but I felt the rice was lacking in flavor and found it a little sweet the meat was just ok for me and slightly greasy. This hole in the wall is only a few minutes drive away from our house so we went and tried their beef super burrito for around $15. The burrito was so big and shareable with another person. It was bigger than chipotle's burrito. We ordered takeout but they have some tables and chairs outside, none inside. Service was fast, we got our burrito in 5 minutes. The burrito came with chips and 2 small containers of green and red salsas. The burrito had rice, beef, beans, cilantro, onions, tomatoes and guacamole. Presentation wise it looked very appetizing, but the potatoes weren't cooked all the way which ruined it for me. We also ordered a gordita de chicharrón and the flavors were very bland. Quickly checked yelp and from the photos the tamales looked the same so I wondered if the owners expanded the menu and changed their name. Learned it was new owners however, the previous tamale lady did still come in to make the tamales. Ordered a sope because that's my fave along with a tamale and the Hubbs ordered an Al pastor and carne asada tacos. My sope had freshly made masa and was huge. Found this place on a random Yelp search after a Costco run. Hidden in a small plaza near the apartments by MEHS. The king of the taco (El Rey del Taco) has arrived in town! Just a hop and skip away from la casa de mis padres, this is sure to be my go to spot whenever I'm in the area. The run down strip mall El Rey del Taco is located in has definitely seen better days, but don't let this deter you! As a matter of fact, as long as I can remember, this area has always been in the same condition, and it creates more of an authentic hole in the wall feel instead of being too posh. In addition to El Rey, the popular Volcano Island Korean restaurant a few doors down is also a local favorite. Both of these establishments combine to create a rather solid culinary destination in this otherwise non-descript plaza. Furthermore, Lai Young has been an institution for many decades for frozen dumplings and potstickers. As far as El Rey goes, I have so far only sampled the meat platters, and I must say I have been quite impressed! Whichever you choose, whether it's carne asada, pollo, carnitas, etc., portions are absolutely massive! All are extremely fresh and flavorful to boot. Service is polite, but not chatty, and very efficient. There is no indoor seating, as the shop itself is quite tiny inside, but there is a very cute parklet in the lot with room for perhaps ten guests or so. The DIY salsa bar is ample with fresh ingredients, although everything is very exposed when the lid is open, so do be aware of this if it is a concern. I'm always quite excited to return to my old stomping grounds because because there is a plethora of dining options all within walking distance. With that said, in a very short amount of time, El Rey has lived up to its namesake, rapidly ascending to become the new king of the neighborhood! I live so close by and I never tried the food here! The inside was a bit small only fitting waiting chairs and a salsa bar. They do have a tent outside with tables to sit and eat if you want. I am pleasantly surprised by the portions and the girl who helped me was very nice. I ordered a veggie super burrito and an horchata to go and it was done so quick and the cashier gave me chips and salsa in a bag. The horchata is pleasantly sweet but has that authentic milky rice texture. For the super burrito I asked for some veggies and I'm happy they accommodated for me. I got the green and red salsa. I often overlooked this little taqueria because it's located in an odd strip mall in an obscure neighborhood but one day while picking up food for a friend a few doors down I felt like I wanted a good skrimp burrito because I'm currently not eating dem typical meats right now. + super burrito de camarones (5/5) the burrito is hefty (although I think they made the shrimp variation a little smaller now if I can recall from the first time I visited). This place is a hidden gem. Went there after a performance because we were in the area. Snuck in right before closing. Everything we ordered was exceptional. Got some sopes, which were great. Anyways taste wise the asada torta was good and tasteo hella homemade which to me made it nostalgic. I would say 9.5/10. The burritos...those were delicious! OMG we've been sleeping on this place for so long! A hidden gem in Hayward, located off Hesperian in the residential area. My husband and I have been searching for a Mexican spot that serves hearty and delicious burrito for a good price. We got two super burritos for ~$13 each, carne asada and chicken. We also got two tacos, carne asada and carnitas, and horchata. Our meal came with complimentary side of chips and there was a salad bar to pack your own sauces! So happy there's a salad bar, other spots provide small portion of sauces in tiny containers and there would not be enough sauces to finish the meal with. Altogether we paid about $40 for tons of food, it lasted us for at least two meals! The super burrito is MASSIVE and they load it up. The biggest burrito we've seen in so long and we're so happy! They don't skimp on the meat portions either and there are chunks of avocado. The meat was flavorful and it went so well with the burrito. The tacos were good - the meat was so flavorful and came with a lot. The green hot sauce was mild, and the red one was super spicy! Very addicting I couldn't stop eating them.
