The Gonzalez regular burrito is the tastiest I've ever eaten in Fremont. It is likely the best burrito in Fremont. The tortilla prep is unique and is tasty, browned, and (buttery). The carne asada was fresh, perfectly spiced, tender, a generously portioned. The pinto beans were whole, not overly cooked, and added a nice layer of flavor and texture. Spanish rice was perfectly cooked, not mushy, not bland, not too much or too salty. The spice blend, fresh leafy bits, and crunchy onion bits, set this typical burrito apart from the rest I've tasted, ever. In totality, this burrito is a multilayered flavor and texture experience. We've ordered ahead while a few exits away on 880 and also at the start of the Dumbarton bridge. ============================== This has been on my radar since my colleague told me about the best tacos he'd ever had in the Bay Area including al pastor sliced off a trompo, but then Tacos Grill Los Gonzalez disappeared for a while from the Apex used car lot. They're finally back so we did the long trek over to try them twice. I might come back if I happened to be in the area and saw zero people in line, but otherwise, the wait time is too long. They are not lunch time friendly as orders take a while to come out. First visit, there were two people in front of us and we ordered four tacos. It was a 28 minute wait. Second visit, two people ordered in front of us plus one person who picked up their order right as we got there. We ordered six tacos and waited 37 minutes. That is very long for a food truck. The people in front of us were getting impatient and repeatedly asking for status updates. There are no prices listed anywhere so you have to ask about each item or order off of blind trust. The trompo seems to be gone and it appears they use bulk bagged "al pastor" now, or at least it looked and tasted like what you see when taquerias order large plastic bags of pre-sliced, red-dyed meat to grill up as needed. The paper wrapper around each taco is a must because the fresh made tortillas fall apart after one bite, even if you are eating within minutes of being handed your tacos. Other options nearby are Amelia's Kitchen Taco Truck on Decoto with plenty of parking before Regan Nursery, Tacos Sin Fronteras (another food truck) a block down on the same side of Thornton and Mi Lindo Sinaloa (sit down restaurant) on the opposite side of Thornton.

He was really nice and also offered me the hotter sauce which I really appreciated! I got the nachos there. I don't really like to leave a yelp without a full meal, so I have to go back and try their tacos. But with the nachos, by the time I got home they were already soggy. I highly suggest the harder tortilla chips next time bro! I gotchu with the improvement aspect, so I hope you pick this up :) it would be way better than the thin chips. The smell of different taco meats on that hot plancha is actually quite thick in there, small space maybe 10 or so seats. I go to the Grocery Outlet next door often, so I've been trying their tacos as of late. Here are some notes. Tacos are the tiny street tacos 3-4 biters. Tacos start at about $3.25 and can go up a buck or two, depending on meat upgrades like lengua or up your taco to a 'super taco' with cheese/avo. The tortillas are the super yellow ones and heat them up pretty good, but sometimes you'll get some with more oil, so it has a more fried texture. I like it better like that, instead of just a dry warming. Toppings are only cilantro and onions, no salsa on top. Any salsa will be on the side in a ramekin. Carne Asada (4*) Pretty good but ya gotta like it crisp and well browned. It is actually so crisp that it can get a bit dry. But I do like the flavor as this is seasoned nicely, and I do swoon for well seared beef. Carnitas (3*) This was not seasoned as good as the carne asada for some reason. Kinda bland actually. Had to douse this with their salsa, which are pretty standard but good. They have a mild green and a warmer amber colored one, both super smooth and on the thinner side. Al Pastor (3.5*) This was seasoned nicely but for some reason some of the edges of the chopped pork meat were burnt. Not a deal breaker but it was quite noticeable. Maybe an off day mishap. But good 'al pastor' marinade. Lengua (4.5*) Pretty legit, quite tender but still a nice bounce. Seasoned nicely and simply. I'm gonna ask if they have any pickled jalapenos back there as this could use a nice punch. Gonna try a burrito next. They also have a bunch of shrimp dishes like a Diabla and a coctele. Those are in my wheelhouse too. Grocery Outlet outs are looking like taqueria outs as well. And I ain't mad at that.

The first World Cup game I watched at Taqueria El Mex-Cal was the opening game between Mexico and South Africa. Since this taqueria specializes in Cal-Mex I decided to get the garlic shrimp for lunch. Regarding this dish I couldn't the garlic as there was still shells on the shrimp. The garlic couldn't penetrate the shrimp. The dish was ok. When Mexico scored the opening goal you could feel the excitement amongst the customers. The second time I ate here was the following day for Canada's first World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Taqueria El Mex-Cal specializes in quesabirria, which is my guilty pleasure regarding Mexican food. Not only I ordered the quesabirria, but also I choose the shrimp taco. The quesabirria was ok as the tortilla wasn't crisp enough. There was more beef filling than I've had with other quesabirria. The shrimp taco was better than the garlic shrimp I ordered the previous day. The main reason was the shells were completely removed so the flavors could penetrate the shrimp. The third match I came here to watch was the England-Ghana match. This time I ordered the fried tilapia. I liked the crispy skin and moist meat. However the tilapia tasted bland. With the flour tortilla the fried tilapia was filling. Overall I think the food served at Taqueria El Mex-Cal is ok.
