The restaurant set-up reminds me of a classic authentic 80's style setup you used to find everywhere in the valley offering fast service, free chips y salsa followed by an amazing meal. Food quality and portion sizes have definitely gone downhill over the years, which is disappointing because I've always loved the salsa. Unfortunately, the biggest issue this visit was the service. Our server, Judith, had a negative attitude from the start and made it feel like taking our order was an inconvenience. She didn't check on us at all during the meal, which really impacted the overall experience. We remained polite, but service like that can completely take away from what should be an enjoyable outing. Because of this, we'll be sticking to the Coffee Rd. location moving forward, where the staff consistently brings a much more positive and welcoming vibe. read more

I like El Rizal, but it's super busy and they don't have a full bar like their sister restaurant. Damien's still the food is good. The service is excellent. I would definitely go back again if I was in the area I just prefer Damien's because of the ambience, but the food is very similar and if you're in the area, you can't go wrong. This review is specific to menudo. It is good, however you get a very small bowl for $14.00 which wasn't enough food for a grown person. Not impressed. To start, chips were very good, authentic. They also brought to the table a nice warm refried beans dip. But the salsa wasn't much more than tomato sauce and a little bit of spiciness. Main dishes were just average. Something I'd expect in a chain restaurant like El Torito or Chevy's. In fact, I'd say they're better. I went with my Mexican mother-in-law who was hoping for the best but was let down. She mentioned to me they use canned ingredients and the tortillas were store bought. Service was decent. Pleasant. Nothing bad or exceptional, either. Prices are average - maybe a little on the high side. We won't be back. read more

A hidden gem! Quality tasty foods for a good price. I compare this place to Mexico Tipico in the Bay Area. The beans and rice are so good! The location is a bit questionable, we saw a homeless guy having some weird tantrum outside, probably on drugs, so be aware of your surrounding. Service was decent, they were quick and attentive. We came by on a Tuesday for lunch and there were only a few groups dining in. We ordered take out at the register and got our foods so fast! Before my fiance finished using the restroom, we got our orders and drink. I opted for the lunch special of quesadilla and forgot what my fiance got. Along with Horchata, total price including tax is less than $25! Lots of foods along with chips and salsa. The quesadilla is covered in salsa with sour cream and guacamole, with a side of rice and beans. So good. I added some hot sauce that came with the chips to the quesadilla since the salsa on top of the quesadilla is a bit sweet and not spicy at all. read more

Two poor experiences in a row - 2 months apart. First we ordered catering to go for a family party. Ordered a number of items but specifically a large tray of cheese enchiladas for our vegetarian guests. They ended up being chicken. Last night went for dinner. The waitress was completely distracted and/or uninterested. Took forever to take our order - then got it wrong. Further, the Kid's meal mac and cheese I am almost certain is Kraft (at best) and fries had zero flavor. Service was so poor a customer at another table walked with his empty glass to the kitchen to get more water.... There are plenty of good Mexican restaurants in Modesto. The Jamaica tasted like chlorine water, never brought napkins until I asked, I asked for a bowl, she never returned with my bowl or asked how the food was. This place use to be my favorite. They have the best rice and beans anywhere But the service here has become out of pocket. I took my family to eat here and I was still deciding if I wanted a Molcajete or enchiladas. I told the lady I was trying to decide on one or the other. Well I ended up going with the enchiladas and she said why no Molcajete?? You can't afford it? That comment made me and my wife extremely mad. She legit said that to me. That's 1 experiences the other two times we went to the website for the menu. We look at what we want and we call to place an order for pick up. Both times the prices were completely wrong when we went to pick up our food. The lady said well if u want to order online go ahead... Okay?!! So we pay cash in restaurant and pay way more or we order online and pay less? Make that make sense!! That's Super rude of her to say that. After we drove from ceres to pick up food. she could have helped us out and figure out why the website that they charge people to use has incorrect prices. Yes it cost 3 bucks to place an order on the website btw. Update to my review. For the first time since Covid times we went inside to eat there. Seat yourself sign was tucked away to the side, so we assumed they were seating special due to Covid and waited for a bit. The servers seem to have developed a make-no-eye-contact skill because we couldn't get anyone to seat us so eventually we picked a table. Maybe we picked a bad spot, I dunno, but we couldn't seem to get any service. 2 different servers walked up to us at the same time and by a half hour we had waters and chips, but no order placed. No one even came our direction and the ones across the room made sure not to look in our direction. The appetizer I asked for never came either, so eventually I flagged down the lady cleaning the tables and asked her to send our server over. Instead she offered to be our new server. Ok. So we placed the order and I asked about the appetizer again. Well all the food ended up coming out at once, so what was the point of appetizer? But now we had four entrees and no silverware or napkins, so I asked for that and she brought 2 forks, 3 spoons, and disappeared again. There were four of us!! This was the middle of the afternoon like 3pm, so not rush hour for them at all. I don't know why it was like this but this was the worst service ever. It pained me to tip, but I always always tip due to servers getting such a low hourly.. I gave 10% which is probably the worst I've ever tipped. I also had to stand by the register for what felt like ages (probably 10 minutes?) to pay. The whole visit dragged out for like an hour and a half mostly just us sitting around tapping our fingers waiting. It wasn't my idea of a good time! This used to be the place I loved to bring family when they visit. Good food, good atmosphere, good prices... Now I don't know what to say. I hope they read their reviews on here, I noticed several recent ones are saying the same thing about waning service. It's a negative 5 for me. I was digging in my quesadilla, thinking the strings hanging was just super cheesy cheese. Omg I want to throw up! Come to find out there is a big ball of hair lint. Then, top it off she continues to charge my companion. I over looked the no soap or paper towels in restroom but I can't digest hair ball or garbage. So just know if you have eaten from here, more than likely you have eaten hair and trash in your meal. Good luck to anyone who wants to dine here.
