There are several El Rosal's in Modesto but it was my 1st time at this particular location. They have half the place closed off for construction. Ok no big deal. The food was just like every other El Rosal. Great! My issues were about service and about my basket of broken chips. I wasn't the only customer being ignored there if tgatbmakes it any better. One table seemed to get all the attention. It was the waitresses friend and nobody else mattered. Back to my chips... I look forward to visiting a Mexican restaurant and my chips n salsa. Well it seems I got the bottom of the old bag. I doubt there was even a whole chip in my basket. Very disappointing. And my final complaint is the size of my michelada. It came in a plastic cup smaller than the water glass. In case you never had one they usually come in a nice BIG goblet with plenty of room for that lovely spicy tomato goodness but not here. Luckily my actual meal was tasty or there wouldn't be any stars. read more

They have a habit of changing the tip to the 20% has happened twice now. On pick up orders!!! And each time the person on the phone said they were the manager until the fact that it's theft was brought up. Then they have a story about owner and Manager not being available. read more

First off I want to say the staff here is kind and very attentive. We don't regular this el rosal I usually go to the one on Coffee. The only reason we do come to this el rosal is for the pozole and menudo. I've ordered menudo twice within the last 3 weeks (to go) and both times it came with a lovely side of HAIR. The first time I let it go and just threw it away this time, I'm Done. It's absolutely disgusting and so unsanitary. Do Better! read more

This place sucks. I placed an online order 33 minutes ago and they gave a pick up time in 20 minutes. I get here and the manager says they just put the order in, 20 more minutes. I said "no" just cancel my order. She says no we cannot do that. So while I am WAITING, another customer comes back with her order and says there is hair in her food. I loved El Rosal, until today, awful service today! (Well at least at this location!) We got there sat down, chips/salsa, drinks then we sat there. She brought more chips and then we sat there waiting. It had been an hour so we asked what was going on, they said something about something getting stuck on the grill, they said the food was going to come out soon, we are HANGRY now! We're ready to walk out and they hurry the food over! My nephews order wasn't right, and his food was warm. The shitty thing was they could have told us there was going to be a wait! There was six of us, my husband and I live about 6 hours away and wanted Mexican food before heading home. They gave us a 10% off the order we even talked to the manger after and all she said was sorry. I like the El Rosal on carpenter road better, but they were closed! read more

I was extremely disappointed in the service and the cuisine at El Rosal. My husband and I went there for lunch and there was one other couple already seated. The waitress gave us our menus and some chips and water, but then kind of just disappeared. After she finally took our order it took about 25 minutes to get our food -- which seemed long considering there weren't very many patrons. Turns out they do a steady take-out business and that's where the bulk of the staff seemed to dedicate their efforts. As for the food, I ordered enchiladas in red sauce, and they came with green sauce and sour cream. I didn't send them back because it took so long to get our food, and to be honest I'm OK with green sauce. The problem was that the chicken was dry and had no sauce on the inside and just a dab on the outside. My husband's chicken was OK, but it was huge. They really should have some smaller senior offerings. I did like their salsa, but not enough to return. read more

Service was horrible waitress rude, unfriendly we werent greeted at all had to find our own table and was rushed to order. Took them 30 mins to ask if we needed refill. The food was salty and small portion for the high price chicken was vey dry and the torilla were crust rough at the ends. We will not return to this location at all. read more

One star for ignoring purple tier restrictions as of time of writing this. As a customer who recently lost family to a community acquired Covid in Modesto, there is no excuse at this point for ignorance a year into this pandemic. I arrived and noticed the ample outside seating was completely empty, but when we entered the entire seating area full of people, with poor ventilation and obviously no masking by the eating patrons. There was to their credit mask by the staff and some plastic dividers but the airborne viral load in the place could easily negate the effectiveness of any of that with just a few positive patrons. There is no reason why that outside area could not have been occupied, it was a nice warm day in the middle of the afternoon. Food is decent which is why we stop there often when traveling thru Modesto, but not "get sick and die" worthy. Last time we'll be going. read more

I wanted to post a good review but! Beware, possibly the worst service and food that I have ever come across!!! I wanted to eat my meal and order an enchilada and soup to go. They took so long to serve the blonde single diner that I asked for it all to go. It took an hour before I walked out the door and that's without me eating before leaving. I specifically said NO cheese on the enchilada 2 times. I got it home and it was covered in cheese. It was for a lactose intolerant person!! If he had ate that it would have made him SICK!! I called to let them know, her response~ "well, what can we do, you want us to remake it for you and you come here to get it?" In a who cares tone. She blamed the guy who took my order, no apology, just he didn't know how to take orders. Why! Is he taking orders!!!!????? There's were no Covid precautions, there's outside seating but everyone's crammed inside, not 6' apart, servers wearing masks but that's about it. The chips and salsa weren't good, worst bean dip I've had. Servers rushing around yet ignoring customers. This was a$30 wasted meal. I'm glad some people have had better service and think the food is good, but not me. The Pollo chicken soup needs to be called cabbage soup, more cabbage and peas than taste. read more

My family and I decided to give this spot a go for the first time. Carnitas platter was okay, but we were super disappointed when we opened the box with the shrimp fajitas and our burritos. The box of fajitas consisted of a huge pile of bell peppers and onions mixed in with exactly 5 shrimp. Both burritos barely even looked or tasted like burritos as they weren't fully wrapped and they consisted of mostly rice beans and barely any meat. Poor quality food. read more

My husband and I decided to come here for dinner and it was a BIG mistake. The server has ZERO customer service and she asks us "if we need a menu?" Stupid question!!! Of course we need one. We told her the Diet Pepsi was out of flavor and she tells us we don't have anymore. She then comes back with something she called a Diet Pepsi but it tasted like crap. Bottom line her attitude was garbage and she never once checked on us so in return she got a $0 tip. Irma shouldn't be that manger here. After placing a door dash order I called to add extra cheese and to add an extra small side of salsa. I told her she could charge me extra for it. She then say's she is unable to charge me extra so she can't add extra cheese or the small salsa. I tell her how I order from El Rosal weekly and this has never been an issue. She then tells me she will get in trouble from her boss Juan if she adds the extra cheese. I ask her to call him. She refuses. I must admit, I pretty much live at this place. I show up with family and friends. Jaime brings me my beer. He knows all of our friends order before we do. Not sure how he has that kind of memory but he is the best. Most importantly, he brings me my beer without me asking. I get the eggs with the pounded meat with the (not spicy) red sauce. It's the only place my wife can eat Mexican and not get heart burn for five days afterwords. My buddies grub until they need to be rolled out. Did I mention Jaime always bring me by beer? I can't speak about the 95% of the other place as I only hang out in the bar and eat, but looking through to the restaurant side, looks pretty good. My only beef with the place is sometimes they play on TV the fighting shows where sweaty dudes are crawling all over each other to break their legs. They always change to basketball or football when you ask, though. I came here on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch and it wasn't too busy. After about 5 minutes my bf and I ready to order so we closed our menus. 5 minutes go by and no one has come to take our order and I can see 4 waitresses clustered in the kitchen just talking so I eventually wave one of them over. I tell her I'm ready to order and she tells me that someone else will take my order. UM WHAT. So the waitress that was supposed to take my order walks over to her friends table and sits with them and takes their order even though they came after me. I rarely get up and leave establishments, but I was waiting for too long and was too hungry to be treated this way. The only good thing I liked was their chips and salsa. All I wanted was an order of rice, I asked how much it would be and my jaw hit the floor. $37 for a large side order of rice, $21 for a medium, and $9 for a small...for just rice!? I love their rice but not THAT much. Who do y'all think you are with these 5 Michelin Star prices? Talk about price gouging. Went to Garcia JoJo's instead and got a huge serving of WAY better tasting and fresher rice for under $7. Just went in for a pickup order of chips and salsa. Waited 15 minutes, only 3 tables seated at the time. Chips were so stale we threw them away. Waitresses also argued with someone picking up a doordash order. He requested the bags be sealed, as state mandate requires, and they were very rude to him. I used to eat here regularly but it has certainly gone down in quality and customer service. read more

This El Rosal has the best Mexican food in Modesto! The staff are so attentive too. I love ordering the Chicken Guadalajara and their chili verde these dishes are so delicious. The chicken fillets are grilled perfectly and the sopa (rice) and beans. Don't fill up on the chips like my hubby always does (lol!) bcuz those are good along w/their salsa and bean dip. I'm going to give El Rosal four stars because the salsa was spicy and had a well balanced flavor. I ordered the vegetarian burrito supreme with green sauce and it was fantastic. I like that they used whole pinto beans and the sauce was excellent. Although this is my first visit and the only dish I tried, the service was superb compared to other red in Modesto and my waitress was sweet. I'm excited to try some other dishes in the future. read more

This restaurant is hit or miss. When it's good... it's just barely decent. The food is tasty but definitely nothing to write home to mother about. The service is mediocre at best. When it's a miss however; they really bomb out. I ordered a steak combo and specifically requested NO Serrano peppers as I can't tolerate the heat. Well the order brought included the peppers. Upon alerting my server, I made the mistake of giving them to option to either remake the steak portion of the dish as originally ordered or to offer a discount. The discount the manager noted on the bill was for a measly $1.96 (10% of a $19.00 entre). I'm sorry, but that's absolutely pathetic when I was barley able to eat the main ingredient of the dish!! This is for the Turlock location over by Costco and the older one by the car wash on Golden State prior. The problem was, why we quit going, we had been lied to about their not using lard or meat fat in their cooking. We are vegetarian, we always ask if there is meat or meat fat in this or that we are interested in ordering, and mentioned it from time to time to be sure nothing changed. They, several times, every time we would ask, even the manager, told us no, they use vegetable shortening, no lard. We trusted them. Not knowing the difference between the taste of lard and vege shortening, we ate there for years, until we went with some Mexican friends who were also vegetarians and they were surprised we ate there. They told us there was lard used in the food, they tasted it. We never went back. Will not go back unless we could feel we could trust what they say. We also told our friends who eat there what happened, and our kids who have eaten there with us several times. They won't go back. Loved the chile relleno. That chopped cabbage with chips. It was always a nice experience to eat there. SO sad they don't deal honestly with their customers. SO sad they don't use vegetable shortening. I get that lard is cheaper, but is so unhealthy. Clogs the arteries, pipes in restaurants, too. Pigs are not healthy to eat. They carry disease, parasites such as trichinosis. Any meat eating, actually is not healthy overall, as some disease is passed between animal and human, and why eat the dead flesh of the poor creatures anyway, getting your protein second hand.
