Lomo Saltado
Leslie D.

Very good authentic Peruvian food. We ordered take out and also dined in and the food was consistent. The portions for take out are enormous though. The smaller option is $25 for a lomo but it's really enough for 2. The restaurant is lacking ambiance but who cares, go there for good food!

Platanos and leche de tigre

A pleasant storefront restaurant with delicious leche de tigre and platanos maduros. It's clean and inviting with very good service. The portions are large and prices are fair. There's a nice selection of desserts, which I was too full to try, but no alcohol served.

Ceviche

Always on point. For price, portion is huge. You could get three meals out of it for one person. Delicious ceviche and lomo saltado. Will keep coming back. Service is good

Ceviche
Zat L.

Hands down the best ceviche on Staten Island! Unlike many other places in the city just put in a lot of onions, there is so much seafood in their ceviche: Mussels, shrimp, fish, squid, on top of large chunks of sweet potato and big white corn. And the portion is pretty decent. I was never able to get full on ceviche before but I could barely finish this plate. This will be my go to place on the island for ceviche! So glad I found this spot!

The service is good and it might take a little wait but the wait is worth it, because the food is 10 out of 10.

However, because I didn't know Spanish, she had to call another lady from the back to take my order. Not a big deal. There are specials taped to the front window but they are written in Spanish. Just ask when you order what the specials are. The dining area is pretty small. It's a pretty casual place to dine in. I think they give out their paper takeout menus for dining in guests as well. I ordered 1/4 piece rotisserie chicken that came with fries and a salad. It's served with yellow and green sauces. The green sauce was my favorite because it was spicy. The chicken tasted so good with the green sauce! The chicken was cooked perfectly. It was moist and tender. The fries were good too. You can substitute white rice instead for no extra charge. The salad comes with dressing already on it. All that for $6. Definitely a great deal! I will definitely be returning during my lunch break! There's a minimum for credits. I forgot what it was. I think it's $20..

When one Peruvian restaurant closes, another one opens…read more Puerto Peruano is a newly opened family-owned Peruvian restaurant found in the Seaport area of Elizabeth on 1st St. Restaurants regularly open and close in this area, as there is a less touristic aspect of foot traffic compared to downtown. Upon walking in, there's a strong aromatic smell of hot Peruvian dishes, either lomo saltado, or chaufa. There were several tables occupied by locals for lunch when I arrived. The architecture of the restaurant is a tad strange, although homely in its decorations, the restaurant being split in two halves by walls. The service was extremely friendly and attentive, full of smiles. The menu consists of seafood dishes (stewed and steamed fish, breaded, jalea, ceviche, soups, etc.) as well as other typical Peruvian dishes such as saltado, chaufa, bistec a lo pobre, and more, excluding pollo a la brasa. In addition, they have a whiteboard with daily specials. I went with the ceviche de pescado as well as a cup of chicha morada. The chicha was excellent with strong sweet flavor, topped with fruit. The ceviche was of great portion ($13), a nice crunchy but cooked fish taste, balanced by the lime and onions. It came with corn and a steamed sweet potato on the side, as is typical. It was served in a shallow fish-shaped dish, allowing ease of drinking the leche de tigre. As you can see in the picture of the ceviche, there is much attention paid to the variety of spices and herbs to the dish. The fact that the dish is very green, and there are fine chopped hot peppers are good signs! I look forward to returning to try some of their many hot dishes next!

That set the tone of attentive service, which continued throughout an exceptional meal in Bath Beach. This area is busy, in a locals doing their thing kind of way. It's a real neighborhood, and La Chacra is a great reason to check it out. We initially had decided on ordering the Combo La Chacra, which consists of a whole rotisserie chicken, yellow rice with red beans, an avocado salad, an order of salchipapas, and an order of maduros. We added an extra half chicken, and thought "that's a wrap". However, there was an appetizer special of thinly sliced octopus prepared Peruvian style that needed to be ordered too. The service was excellent. Not overwhelming, but just right. Dishes were cleared, napkins replaced, straw wrappers taken away as soon as they hit the table. It's not something that I'm used to writing about, but needed to be said. And then, the food. It was outstanding. Compared to both the basic, and the high end Peruvian restaurants that I've been to throughout the city, La Chacra is far and away the best. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and felt intentional. Nothing was just thrown on a plate. As full as we were, and we were quite full, there was no way that we were leaving without trying something from the desert menu. Another wise choice, as both the flan and the tres leche cake were fantastic. To wrap this one up, this spot is a solid five stars. The prices are very reasonable and the food, service, and charming atmosphere will have us returning soon.
