One of the things I love about New York, you can literally eat your way around the world. I was looking for a Cuban restaurant, because I wanted a good Cubano, and instead, I found this place, which is food from across Latin America. They had the Cubano, but they had so many other things, I decided to go for something different. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is a nice space, with Latin music playing loud and proud.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have parking behind the restaurant, but it is shared with the other businesses in the small shopping center that the restaurant is in. Parking may be tricky. The food is on a cafeteria line, you just tell them what you want. It was Sunday, so I wanted to try the goat. Unfortunately, they were sold out. Instead, I decided to go for the chicken stew. For my sides, I decided to go for the rice and pigeon, peas, and the yellow plantains. Dear lord, I couldn't believe the size of the plate that she handed me. The chicken was bone in, but it was so tender and juicy, it was literally falling right off the bone. It was seasoned well and had an amazing flavor. I loved the rice, and the pigeon peas kind of reminded me of Black Eyed Peas. I liked the nutty flavor. The plantains were done very well. I love plantains, they reminded me of a banana, only a little bit less sweet. I had enough food for two full meals, and each of them left me stuffed. Monday night we had dinner here. The only downside was the wait for a waitress and a wait for the food. But it wasn't there fault. They were just busy and possibly short-handed. Convenient, no frills catering with a menu viewable online! I happened upon El Pollo because I needed to have food catered for a birthday party and one of my all-time guilty pleasures is Spanish food. However, being from South Brooklyn, there aren't many Spanish restaurants, let alone ones that do catering. Luckily, I have a friend who is Spanish and she always did catering for her son's birthday parties in Staten Island. She gave me her source and that's how I ended up with El Pollo. Thankfully, El Pollo made it very easy to order over the phone because their menu and catering menu were listed on their website. Everything is always easier when it is just listed right in front of you and you have all of the information you need to make your decisions! On their catering menu, they had their food items listed, the different sizes of trays and the prices for each size. Easy as 1-2-3. After you call in your catering order, you're pretty much set! They don't make you pay a deposit up front either, you only have to pay when you pick up the day of. (FYI, if you pay cash, the total will be lower.) After careful consideration, we ordered the following: Rice with Pigeon Peas (Medium Tray) Roast Chicken (Medium Tray) Pernil (1/2 Tray) Sweet Plantains (1/2 Tray) All of their catering items come in a 1/2, Medium or Large tray with each increase in tray size resulting in about double the price of the immediate smaller size. For our party, we were serving about only 8 adults and 2 teens and we absolutely over ordered. We probably could have done a 1/2 tray for those 4 entrees and we would have still had leftovers! For the serving size for each tray, the catering menu tells you approximately how many people it could serve and after we ordered from them I would say it's about spot on, if not even underestimates a little. Unfortunately, as smooth as the experience of ordering was, the food was just average. Some of it good, some of it not that good. The rice was decent and not bad. It was what it was. However, it felt like every piece of roast chicken was very dry. There were a few pieces of dark meat scattered, but it seemed to us that there were many, many more white than dark meat pieces. The pernil was pretty good though - juicy, fatty in some spots, while other pieces were dry. As for the sweet plantains, it was somewhat of a disappointment. Once again, not absolutely terrible, but the sweet plantains were too hard for my liking. They definitely could have been cooked longer with more flavor. Ultimately, El Pollo came through for our catering needs and everything was fulfilled as requested. I was very satisfied with the serving sizes, pricing and service, but wish the food quality was jussssst a bit better. read more

Absolutely delicious authentic Spanish (Cuban, Puerto Rican) great service, friendly atmosphere)

On July 28 I ordered breaded shrimp. The shrimp was not cooked properly and drained in oil as they did not drain the shrimp. The Breaded shrimp was not completely breaded and you could see parts of it that were not cooked. I called and asked them to redo it and that I would take it back. Upon arriving the manager wanted to speak with me and he accused me of being someone who complains about food. he said they don't have time to drain the shrimp and that the oil in the plate was normal. However the amount of oil was beyond comprehensive. I had to take several napkins to drain out the plate. He went on to say I am the only one who complains about the shrimp. The manager is arrogant and not in tune with how a restaurant is supposed to operate. I purchased other things that I did not return nor complained about. I purchased rice and beans and stew beef and fried tostones. The rice was a bit dried but the beans helped it out and the tostones were not drenched in oil. Therefore, my complaint about the shrimp was real, valid and justified. But bus attitude and way of speaking to paying customers is unacceptable. M and K is way better but they close early. If you want good Spanish food do not go to El Pollo go to M And K by victory blvd or the new Puerto Rican restaurant on Bay Street Boriken. To this manager - you truly need some schooling on restaurant ethics and customer service manners. read more

I ordered a cheesesteak sandwich. I asked only for steak and cheese on the sandwich no onions no vegetables the boy that took my order said it would only take 10 minutes. I waited over 35 minutes for a sandwich that was greasy, and the bread was soggy. They didn't use yellow cheese like I requested and they put a whole bunch of onions in it. I'm allergic to onions hence why I didn't asked for it. Unfortunately, I had to throw the sandwich away because I was too upset to drive back and wait again for another sandwich. The place is okay.. only thing I recommend is that you get there early if you want fresh food because after 5pm the food looking stale.. the staff are friendly and nice. El Pollo is a pretty decent Spanish restaurant. This specific spot is nice bc it's huge you can host a nice decent gathering, there's is like 2 more locations. Growing up on vanduzer ave & being able to walk here for a decent amount of good quality Spanish food for $6.50 after school was everything. It's buffet style serving the food is in front of you and you pick what you want and the nice lady's serve you lol There's also a menu of course where you can choose what you like if your not feeling the hot already made food they do make to order. Also great coffee an decent breakfast as well. I'm not to sure on parking as I just usually leave it doubled park in front. First, let me just say that I know these NYC health grades are not ideal but you have to wonder about a joint that can't muster up an "A". That said, I was happy to see that my favorite Spanish restaurant finally has an "A". So we went back the other night, around 8 and it seemed like the food trays were much more presentable. There was never an issue with the staff or how the food tasted and we pretty much stuck with the basics, arroz con gandules, pernil, maduritos and a side of pink beans.
