I can't say anything bad about the food or the restaurant itself. It definitely feels like a Mexican restaurant. The food is very delicious, the restaurant itself is covered Mexican culture. The reason I give the place 4 stars is because if you're gonna go, you wanna go later in the day when there's more people in the restaurant. When you go for lunch between 11-2, the restaurant is pretty dead. Unfortunately, when the restaurant is dead, the servers are dead as well. This restaurant is in a strip mall plaza off of the Anthony Wayne Trail. I was on my way downtown after a meeting elsewhere and was looking for a place with parking to grab a quick solo lunch. At first glance, I wasn't sure if it was a takeout place or a restaurant, but I could see it was a dine-in restaurant upon entering. The ambiance is rather dark but with a pleasant atmosphere with colorful decor. I was surprised that there weren't more people there at prime lunch time. I was promptly seated and served with tortilla chips and salsa while I reviewed the menu. The chips were thicker than I prefer and the salsa was rather thin/watery for my taste. The flavor of the salsa, however, was good. I ordered the lunch "Special Burrito" with shredded chicken and guacamole salad. It was promptly served. I would have preferred an entree with beans and rice but my server informed me that the beans were fried in lard; I'm not a fan of lard and there were no other bean options. The chicken burrito was decent and the guacamole was fresh. The fresh guacamole was the best part. I added some of the watery salsa to give the dish more flavor, but it mixed with the watery bland creamy red sauce that was already part of the burrito. It wasn't bad aside from the watery texture but definitely nothing I would crave. It was a fairly quick lunch that cost approximately $7.50 (only water as a beverage) before tip. They got one star only because I had to leave something. It's 4:10pm upon entering restaurant there were no customers. We were seated, and the server wanted to take our order before we looked at a menu or taking a beverage order. Server had no customer service skills. She brought our beverages and again asked if we were ready to order. Waited for chips and salsa, because it was still cooking. When received, chips were not salted or fully cooked. When food arrived it was either, burnt, overcooked, or looked a plate of slop. Server did not check back at all. Left my entire plate, ate none of it, server didn't even ask if anything was wrong. Table we were at was wiped clean except for middle of table which was greasy and dirty. Our regular server Sandra was not working due to an injury to her arm. Sad part is we go almost every week, and this is the third time Sandra wasn't working. Based on that I know who takes pride in her job and the restaurant. My family and friends won't be back. Spent $49.92 for 2 Dr Peppers. Ended up going to Taco Bell, and the even sadder part, it actually tasted better. read more

We used to come here all the time but then La Fiesta opened which is where we originally went tonight but there was a power outage so they were closed. The salsa tasted like tomato juice. My husband's food was good but I ordered the steak Fajitas which were $17. They had no flavor I don't even know how that's possible and pictured is the portion that I recieved I pushed it to the side to show how little there was. This was our first time trying El Salto. It's been on our list of restaurants to check out. We will NEVER be back. We were sat in a booth that offered no breathing room. The back of the booth to the edge of the table was about 8-12 inches... it made a lot of sense why they picked us to sit in this booth after we sat down. We were very clearly the smallest people in line waiting. The salsa had a bad flavor and was the consistency of water. The food was very bland! Once they set our food down we asked for boxes and the check. The seating arrangement was so uncomfortable that we couldn't wait to get out of there. My boyfriend let our waiter know that we just had no room and were uncomfortable and the waiter laughed. Brought our food home and threw it in the trash. My cheese enchilada was off, tasted like mozzarella cheese. Save your money and go elsewhere! read more

For a really cheap Mexican place this place might be 4 or 5 stars. So in a way my review is unfair. the service was uninspired. I asked for nachos with beef and beans. The beef was that type of pureed beef that I swear they get in a can. It was on the left side of the plate. The beans were refined beans, also on the right side of the plate. So none of the plate was both beef and beans. I asked for very little cheese, and got a lot of cheese. The good news is it's extremely inexpensive. Great place for many things. I visit once per week and normally go with Carnitas street tacos, and they're stuffed with meat! Some places serve small skimpy tacos, but not here. Crunchy tacos for $1 on Mondays, can't beat that! Steak taco's could be better, but overall this place very good. read more

Got el salto delivered via Grubhub so we're going to look past the food temperature/ chips being soggy. My husband got nachos with chicken, what was delivered was just chips with cheese and my shrimp nachos had a hair in it. Needless to say we will not be going back. El Salto has long been a personal favorite of mine. I visited once every 5 days on average for several years prior to moving to the west coast. Now that I am back in the area, I am glad to be able to eat here regularly again. The first and best thing about El Salto is one of the simplest. The runny, white queso dip that is just so delicious and good to ladle over your entree much less dipping chips into is worth the visit alone. El Salto offers a good compromise on their menu between the typical and bland "Americanized" Mexican food and the truly authentic that I spent several years enjoying and experiencing out west. I have tried most of the entrees on the menu multiple times and have never been disappointed with any. The chori-pollo is my favorite dish. Why? Its a simple dish, with chicken breast, chorizo, veggies and beans served with 3 tortillas for you to make your own tacos with. The thing about the dish that makes it special to me is the chorizo. Living out west I learned there are several different types of chorizo used and frankly, some of them are just bland and more filler than anything. The chorizo here is extremely flavorful and the first bite of even a little of it is great. I rarely found the kind of chorizo El Salto uses out west except for a few choice taco trucks in LA and Las Vegas. The dish is great on its own but its even better if you take the decadent step of adding some of the aforementioned queso onto your tortillas. They offer the usual fare otherwise, including tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and more. They have some dishes that incorporate more authentic methods such as mole sauce as well. Most of the entrees contain authentic aspects to them instead of the bland, interchangeable fare served at the majority of Mexican restaurants in town. Quesadilla Verde is another entree I would quickly suggest. It blankets the quesadilla with salsa verde, or green sauce, which is surprisingly uncommon at most Mexican restaurants here and is incredibly common out west. Tomatillos make a great salsa if you haven't had it before. The service is friendly and prompt, although the restaurant can be slammed during dinner, especially on weekends. If you are impatient or hate crowds you might want to go at off peak hours or during the week when dinner is usually not quite so busy. The prices are similar to the other Mexican joints in the area, but the food tends to be far more flavorful and inventive in comparison. After living in what is essentially the land of delicious Mexican cuisine for several years, I have not lost any of my appreciation or love for El Salto. That speaks to its taste over the usual places it competes with. read more

Service is pretty fast, food is ok usually, but not great. The menu is deceptive though. The "Vegetarian" menu is actually largely not, as they use Lard (as in animal fat) when preparing the refried beans. I confirmed this with the cook via a person working there. read more

I would say this is just your everyday Mexican restaurant. It is not necessarily bad food, but I would not go out of my way for it. The service staff is friendly, and the place is always full - which makes for a fun environment. They do take reservations, which is unlike many of the others - something that I have used when booking large groups. Probably won't come here again..weird service and food. Beans had a white milky liquid on them I ordered 3 hard shell tacos with ground beef and beans and rice and he acted like I ordered something weird and he change my order so that it could cost more after he told me that it would be cheaper. then it took forever to get our bill. My husband ordered queso dip which came out like melted mozzarella cheese but had started to harden up already with greasy sausage in it and the grease was dripping off of it wasn't my favorite Mexican food for sure. I have gotten El Salto twice. The first time was just eh. It tasted off. Just okay I would say. The service was slow for carry-out. This time we got carry-out and the service was fine. But our food still tasted off. Not like it's going to make us sick, but the flavors do not taste authentic. Whenever I get Mexican, I order the Carne Asada. This steak was seasoned heavily with seasoned salt. I could not get passed the flavor. I just felt like I was eating a very salty American steak from The Sizzler. I had lunch at your Sylvania location today. I have eaten at the Maumee location many times and was excited to see the new location. The food was barely warm and my chimmichanga was very greasy. the service was not good, the server dropped off the bill at my table and was hovering behind me and as soon as I opened the check she was at my table asking if it was ready, so i put my card with the bill and she snatched it up and went away. when she returned to the table she put the bill down with one hand and grabbed my plate with the other, I still had my fork in my hand and was not finished eating. I love the fajitas, which they offer in lunch portions if that's your thing. Good chips and salsa too. But my favorite thing about the restaurant? The waiters always call me "amigo". I am always looking for a good Mexican restaurant. Going by the foods my mother cooked as a measurement for the way I rate restaurants, they have a lot to live up to. Enchiladas is the one dish that I usually try whenever I go to a Mexican restaurant and that is what I ordered at El Salto's. I have to say, this was a big disappointment. Tonight we didn't receive chips and salsa; when our food arrived, I had to go back to the kitchen to get silverware. No one even checked on us until we were done eating.
