We had two chicken dishes - pollo Feliz and pollo soleana. Both were good, but the soleana was very good. Veggies were cooked well, chicken was tender, and the cheese sauce put it over the top. The refried beans were also very good. Service was friendly and fast. Party of 2 and we were in and out in less than 30 minutes. Nice restaurant - clean, well lit. read more

We stopped here simply because there were a lot of cars in the parking lot and it looked like a Mexican place. There were no signs. We came in and the staff were really friendly. The menu had a good selection. I got the he carnitas street tacos & my husband ordered fish tacos but decided to also get street style. He loved his enough not to share a bite. I love him enough to give him one of mine. lol. The tomatillo salsa that came with the tacos was outstanding. I finished mine with some chips. The regular salsa was delicious too. I didn't want rice and beans but did overhear someone saying it was really good. It's a little hike from the casa but we'll be back! read more

Well ... that was an experience. Stopped while traveling back home based on other reviews and .. wow. I'm from Texas, so my expectations are high. And Ohio has consistently been disappointing (though when they rock, they rock!). This ranked down there with the worst of them. Ohio really needs to learn how to make salsa. Our meals were "okay" but overcooked and mostly generic at best. Service was mediocre. And it looks like they haven't updated menus in a decade of Sundays. read more

I have been here numerous times and never had a bad experience. This last time I got the fajita quesadilla, and it was spectacular. It was the perfect proportion of chicken to other ingredients and the service was quick. I will continue going back to enjoy some of the better Mexican food I have had. I was shocked to look this place up on Yelp and find that it has a 5-star review until I noticed that both reviewers are from the area. Granted, I am a native Californian and have traveled to Mexico several times, so my standards for Mexican food are a bit higher, but it is also my favorite cuisine, so I tolerate bad Mexican food, but this place was beyond what I could stand. Were it not for the fact that my in-laws were treating and I wanted to be polite, I would not have finished my meal. I thought perhaps it was just my meal that was super salty because someone had made a mistake or spilled salt, but others at the table also said their meals were very salty (and they have different types of meat and different dishes). I said to my sister-in-law (who is from Ohio): It tastes like someone-made-a-mistake-salty. She agreed which tells me that it's not just my taste buds being used to healthier (California/non-Ohio) cuisine. It was so bad it literally caused an onset of edema that lasted until the next morning. Additionally, 2 people who had the raspberry iced tea asked for something else before finishing it. I almost vomited trying to finish it (again, not wanting to be rude). Again, I understand the other 2 reviewers if this is their only option, but I would take Taco Bell over this place ANY DAY. read more

Small towns don't often have a wide variety of culinary offerings. El San Jose is by no means gourmet cuisine, but it is certainly a nice change of pace from Ponderosa. The angle of this restaurant is definitely "authentic" Mexican although how authentic it is I am ill-equipped to judge. I do know that it is, thankfully, a far cry from On The Border. The food is what you'd expect from a Mexican place, just a bit more rudimentary...and delicious. They offer a fairly wide selection ranging from large platter dishes to a plentiful a la carte menu. And, as far as price and flexibility go, you can't beat the choices of their individual items. After years of dining here, I continually come back to their grilled steak dishes, which are consistently the highest quality as far as their meats go. Over the past year they have increased their prices somewhat - no doubt to keep up with rising costs. Even with the a more expensive menu, a night out here will come nowhere close to breaking the bank. The biggest increases can be found in their a la carte menu which used to have meal-sized portions for $4-$5. Now you will paying near $7. The ambiance of this place is great. They did a major expansion and renovation a few years ago. Prior to that, El San Jose was even more hole-in-the-wall - and better for it. Now, they can provide amble seating for the busy weekends while still maintaining at least a bit of its previously cheesy charm. El San Jose is quickly becoming a New Philly/Dover landmark. It's a must for anyone wanting simple Mexican at afford prices. It is always a mandatory stop any time we are back in the area. read more

El San is a Tuscarawas county staple. Great food, great service, and reasonable prices. The cheese in the soft tacos is amazing! I am not sure why the Californians on here think they have perfect food, having spent a lot of time there it is just like any other place. With that said though I have to agree with the Cali poster on this one. As far as Maxican places go it is not steller. The food is very salty (though I mostly blame the rice). With that being said though the food is decent, if they dropped the salt content it would probably go up a star. The salsa is very good, the refried beans were awesome and my drink well made. In short, not a place to take your "culturally sensative pallette" having guests, but if you want some mexican for a good price, I suggest giving it a try for yourself. read more

This place is fantastic! My wife and I eat here any chance we are free from the kids. The food is great, they treat you as though you are VIP and it's not gonna hit your wallet hard. This is our family favorite when we are in the area. Our kids always ask to eat at " the headless donkey " This is a great casual dining experience and is the absolute best Mexican food you can get in the county. Our family of 5 can eat very well for less than $50 and that is hard to do these days. Everything is clean and well maintained. The food comes fast and we have never had an order wrong.
