Ok, so I'm now only writing five star reviews because the world is so dark already. A mediocre or bad restaurant doesn't need to be called out, it will die a natural death. A top notch restaurant deserves to have people know about it because it will support excellence. Dear friends (shout out to Jan & Tom) suggested this place years ago and it wasn't until this year we heard and went. It's a Local's place and my Dad ALWAYS said to "eat where the local's eat-they know good food!" El Sol is such a pleasure to go to. We have dined in the air conditioned dining room enough times that we have "our table". Today we picked up "to go" and Natalie greets with a smile and rings you up-always patient and happy to see you. All the staff there have been a pleasure to work with. Most of the food is on array behind a glass wall when you enter the to go section in front of the restaurant. It's all clean and the staff (from what I have seen) support each other to take care of you. When the parking lot gets full-you can park across the street. Photos of the dinner we picked up are below and a picture says a thousand words. We bought this dinner (and a few other items that don't photograph well) for under $60 plus tip. There are not many places that can feed four a terrific dinner for that amount of $'s!! Everything is not for everyone-this has been our experience and we hope it is yours. El Sol Bar & Restaurant has been a longtime local favorite for me and it was my To-Go Spot when I was working at the Hess Oil Refinery back before 2010. It was the place to grab a plate of food before heading into shift work. El Sol Bar & Restaurant is a what many locals refer to as a "Santo Bar" or establishment run by Dominicanas (ex-pats from the island of Santo Domingo). This gem is located off the beaten path to most and I would never expect a tourist or visitor to find it on their own. Quickest way to it is to travel EAST, past Sunny Isles on Centerline Road. When you the Sion Farm Traffic Light, make a RIGHT and drive SOUTH. Look for it on your LEFT on the side of the road. El Sol has parking lots on either side of it & also street parking (if it gets that crowded). There are 3 sections to this establishment: * There is an exterior walk-up order area where you can see the food available for the day in the windows. You then point to what you want and they bring it to the cashier for you to pay. * Alternatively, there's also an interior bar where you can order drinks and food as well. A music jukebox and TVs keep you company while you wait for your orders. * Lastly, there's an interior seating area that is spacious and good for groups. Because it is isolated by a door, it makes for more private dining. El Sol has an extensive menu and it is comprised of pork, beef, chicken, fish, conch, many starches & provisions and a few veggies. I recommend their chicharrones (fried chicken), stew fish, porter house steak, their conch and fish. Please keep in mind the times that you visit while ordering food. Sometimes you may find one of their food options in a tray almost empty. When this happens, ask them if they are going to refill it and how long that may take. This will give you an opportunity for the freshest food selection. If you're in a rush, I recommend Calling-In your order ahead of time to confirm order availability. Overall, I recommend El Sol Bar & Restaurant and Ive enjoyed eating here over the years. I've been a patron for many years and years to come. read more

El Sol features a variety of Puerto Rican and Dominican dishes. It's a great place to eat and offers good value for your money. Worth a visit if you're craving authentic Caribbean flavors. read more

I wanted to go to KFC however, my friend said I can eat that when I get back to Brooklyn, NY so he bought me here. The food was good. They have a few options to choose from by looking through the glass and viewing the food presentations. The chicken was good. The stuffing was a little dry. I went here last month when I took a vacation to St. Croix and it was a good experience. After a long few hours of rum distillery touring, this was awesome. I ordered the half chicken and ribs combo. Baby when I tell you! You must visit this place if you are looking for authentic island fare. We had smothered oxtail and fried king fish and Mac and cheese and carrot cake and steamed veggies and cold beers from the connected bar. Every thing was spot on. Lots of locals were seen coming and going so you know it's got to be good. Extremely casual with takeout available. We decided to eat there on their outdoor patio and then had drinks in the bar. I am pregnant and both times we've gone to ask about our food it's been another excuse. Horrible customer service. I always enjoyed El Sol. They had very few items on the menu. I gave up the fourth entree was not available. This happened on both visits. The foot traffic has exploded within a few months. I observed that the waitresses were attentive but El Sol should increase staff to accommodate the influx of people. This experience was completely opposite from my last yelp review. I was truly disappointed during both lunch and dinner visit. The fried pork was dry. The stew beef was oversalted. The macaroni was available upon entry into the restaurant. I requested that the macaroni was added to our plates. However, the macaroni sold out when the food was brought to the table. Three people shared one piece of macaroni. El Sol is like one of my favorite spots here! It was the first local restaurant I tried when I got here. The first impression wasn't the greatest because the cashier preferred to hold a conversation with her friends instead of taking orders so I left. All the locals kept bragging about it so I gave it another try. The food was good! I prefer their beans over the other beans I have tried on the island. I always order something stewed. The wait is kind of crazy for already cooked food like I usually order what I see in the window and it still takes a long time. Overall, I like this spot but I avoid it on my lunch break. read more

Yes the food is great and very generous portions! We arrived at 11:10 AM for lunch and were among only 6 folks in the place. We ordered drinks after a 10 minute wait, another 10 minutes and we were served the drinks. We ordered lunch at the time drinks arrived. So now it's 11:30 AM. all of our orders were "pre-made" stuff and yet it took over 40 minutes to get our meals... yes one of our party got hers early cause she ordered from the counter out front... mine arrived at 12:30. It took another 15 minutes after asking 3 TIMES for a to-go box (didn't have time to eat all the lunch) to get it and our check... another 10 to actually get the credit card slip. Pro: I'm honestly not sure, based on the completely lackluster customer service. Read below... Con: After about 15 minutes of failed attempts to phone in a to-go order, I decided to visit the restaurant and get some tostones and a plate of seasoned rice. Upon arrival, I waited about 6 minutes to get acknowledged by one of the cooks on shift. She informed me that a waitress will be right over to take my order. All the while, I hear the phone ringing off the hook, and nobody on the staff seemed remotely interested in answering it. (Clearly I wasn't alone in El Sol's lethargic approach to correspondence) About 5 minutes later, a very stoic young lady in the middle of eating a chicken wing approached the counter and stared me down. (Apparently she was the waitress in question) My guess is that she REALLY appreciated the food at her job, seeing as how she looked annoyed at the thought of serving a customer. Nonetheless, I asked for some tostones. She mumbled something inaudible; after all, why chew your food first and swallow it before talking, right?!? I politely asked her to repeat herself, and she informed me that "...we are out and the kitchen is now closed". (End of discussion, I suppose!) I thanked her, abandoned my pursuit of seasoned rice (which was prepared), and left promptly. Bottom Line: El Sol's customer service stopped me from making the grave mistake of giving them my money. My few pennies won't matter to them in the long run. But I simply do not reward rudeness with cash. read more

We went to El Sol on a couple recommendations of some locals. We had the Delmonico steak $28, thinner than ones that we have had in the States, about 1/2 in thick, but still perfectly cooked to our liking (medium rare) and it came with beans and rice (awesome flavors). The restaurant is typical island without a lot of frills, they did have indoor seating with AC. You had to go through a billard room to get to it, kinda loud. I came here 2 years ago while I was visiting my family and I was completely shocked at how delicious this food was. I had oxtails and rice and beans. Before I left the island I came back and bought goat and rice and beans with passion fruit juice. The juice alone put the icing on the cake! It was so natural tasting. The server was good.
