How homey !!!! And relaxing, great food, great customer service ! Margaritas are amazing, they are always on it as far as service, the recipes are so delicious and authentic you can tell the chefs and owner really take the time to make sure everything is on par and correct. I got a enchilada dinner to go, with chips and salsa, I got that last night at 6pm, I just decided to eat it almost 24 hours later, heated in microwave for 4 minutes OMG, it was like I just had it served to me ! The food is horrible and the margaritas are even bad would not recommend this restaurant

So El Sombrero had been closed for a long period during the pandemic. We missed it greatly. Always been a nice friendly family place, and the food was very good for a good price. We knew many of the wait staff and always enjoyed going there. The re-opened about 5 weeks ago. We finally went back (we only live about 2 miles from it), looking forward to the good food and friendly service we remembered. All I can say is it was a big mistake. The evening started with the waitress asking what we'd like to drink. When I asked for a beer, her response was a haughty 'You've come to the wrong establishment, we don't serve alcohol'. OK we ordered water. Next we all ordered the el sombrero dinner, I asked for 2 cheese, 1 beef. 'We don't serve combinations, you can only order cheese, beef, or chicken & they MUST be all same.' ?? We ate. Food pretty much same recipes, no complaint. I had requested an order of Beef enchiladas to bring home to the wife. Our server gave us a heads up to make the order. 5 minutes later she informed us the kitchen was closed, so no to go order was possible. The owner came up a few minutes later and offered us a beans & rice platter with enchilada sauce. Not sure what she would have charged us for that half assed offer. Bottom line: The new ownership & the people they've brought onboard are abysmal. Don't go back. read more

I'm posting this as I lie in bed with my stomach hurting , feeling like I'm going to throw up & really dizzy. This is by far the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Seriously, how do you screw up cheese enchiladas? First off the corn tortillas were stale, & they appeared to be smothered with wolf brand chili. Rice & beans were flavorless & gross. All of this was served along side with canned queso & tortilla chips that left a metallic taste in my mouth., how the hell has this place been in business since 1973?? El Sombrero has every bit of the feel as being a front for a different kind of "family business". I will never be back & recommend that everyone steers clear. Not sure what happened. Twenty years of good memories but these past couple years have seen a drastic change. They have upped the prices and cut back on food quality. The new paying system leaves you in for quite a surprise as you do not get an itemized bill before paying. My family and I and sad we've given them like 4 different chances and got let down. You can literally smell the toilets when you walk in the door! They are right in the main seating area. Typical Mexican restaurant thing where your paper goes in the trash instead if the toilet!! What the hell is that about? The food is mediocre at best. I have been several times, and only found one thing I kind if like. Plain bean and cheese nachos. I really wanted to love this place, it is fairly close to my home and I remember it in the 70's, it was the place to go over in the Alta Loma, Hitchcock area. I'm not sure why this place has such good reviews. The food wasn't good, service was slow, and the waitress was rude. I ordered a cheese enchilada but they brought chicken. I had to go find the waitress to tell her because she never came to check on us. She went to the kitchen to tell them they made a mistake, they demanded her come back to the table and inspect the enchilada before they made a new one because they didn't believe they made a mistake. Food is more authentic Mexican. Not Tex-Mex. Service is good. Drinks and chips stay full. Salsa is very fresh. Overall the Flavor lacks a bit. Good for quick and convenient. Not comparable to local chain favorites like Gringos. But, there are times where this is the better option than a 45 minute wait. Queso is straight out of the can, but don't get it wrong. If you ever want to be completely ripped off by a crappy restaurant, we highly recommend El Sombrero in Hitchcock. Two people in my party were offered fajita chicken with their $9.95 dinner. After getting our check we found that their upcharge for a fajita meat was $10. I can't make this up. The plate went from $9.95 to $19.95 (not stated on the menu). When we asked the manager, he refused to fix it and smugly stated that was the normal charge. Oh, and the food wasn't even good. Do yourself a favor and stay away. read more

This place is cozy and almost unnoticed when you drive by. A solid 3 stars... we had beef enchiladas with rice and beans... the ground beef was seasoned well, but the chili gravy that covered had cinnamon or another spice that made this gravy odd. The rice... for those of you who eat the Mexican rice from other chains, they have it all wrong. This place knows how to make Mexican rice.... it was cooked with all the right spices and was moist, not dry. Refried beans were also good. The hot sauce (both green and red) that come out in small mason jars have great flavor and heat (red one has more heat), but just a tad too much salt. Our waitress was not the best.... she took our drink order and then did not return for a while. We ordered queso to start, queso was good, and we had to remind her. The food did take almost 20 min to come out, but portion sizes were very generous. We will be back to try other eats here. read more

I have eaten there many times over the years was always ok until recently I don't know if they changed owners or what but food has went to hell and their prices areway out of line I took my two sons there for a quick lunch nothing special off the menu and when I went to pay my bill it was 48.50 they don't bring you a tab to the table so you have no way of knowing what you are being charged before hand A sorry way of doing business needless to say I wont be back good luck on your next visit read more

How does El Sombrero not have any reviews? This place is 100% memory lane from growing up in Santa Fe. Over 20 years I've been coming here and every time I make it back to Galveston County, I make a visit. I have to admit I have only had 1 dish every time I go. Three bean tostadas and a large bowl of rice. Simple. delicious. No need to go any further. The beans are tasty and a good mix of refried and whole. Best is the salsa picante and verde that accompanies the chips as you wait for your plate. Family-owned and it's evident as when I come down on Sundays I always forget they are closed. read more

El Sombrero is easily one of the most delicious and underrated Mexican restaurants in Galveston county. Their salsa and guacamole are made fresh daily and are actually spicy, and flavorful as opposed to most of the other Mexican restaurants around whom I'm convinced mix canned tomato sauce with black pepper and maybe some chili powder. The ranchera enchiladas, beans, and rice dinners are delicious, but very heavy and naps necessary afterwords. For lunch I recommend the three bean tostadas, the chicken fajita tacos with corn tortillas, or the child's plate.(don't worry they won't check your I.D.) Their cheeseburgers are also incredible. It's very much a mom and pop business, I think all the employees are part of the family. The beer selection is minimal, and no margaritas unfortunately. They serve huge glasses of iced tea though. The prices can't be beat. The outside of the building isn't much to look at, and neither is the inside for that matter, however when you first walk in the door there is a large window displaying a very clean well maintained kitchen. read more

My husband and I go eat here WEEKLY. Sometimes several times a week. It's not what most would consider a "fancy" place but the food speaks for itself. I crave their food and have to have my "El" fix every week! We have been going there a long time and everything is always delicious. Best enchiladas, beans, and rice around, hands down.
