I recently had my first visit to Red River Cantina, in League City, Texas. I was primarily looking through yelp for a restaurant that served Tex-Mex, and this was the first restaurant that popped up in my area with a "very good" rating. As I write this review, this restaurant currently has a rating of 4.0 stars with 380 reviews. Before coming, I also reviewed several pictures that other folks have posted on yelp, and I thought I'd give this place a try. The outside of this restaurant is well lit and inviting. Parking is plentiful, and they have several handicapped parking spots for folks who need that. Upon entry, I was immediately seated in one of their booths by their hostess. The busboy came out a few minutes later, bringing some fresh chips and two kinds of salsa. The busboy didn't seem too friendly; he didn't say a word or even crack a smile. My waitress came out a couple of minutes later, and her name was Eliza C. She was friendly and professional, and she was attentive to my dinnertime needs throughout my experience. The chips and salsa they serve here are amazingly good. While I decided what I wanted to eat for dinner, I couldn't stop eating them! I ordered one of their "Maximina's Build Your Own Cominados," choosing an order with two items. For my two items, I ordered an enchilada with beef picadillo, and I ordered a crispy taco with beef picadillo. I ordered my meal with a side of their Mexican rice and refried beans. I also ordered a Dr. Pepper with my meal. My meal was delicious. The refried beans were excellent, and they had a smoky/bbq taste to them. The Mexican rice was delicious as well. They did an excellent job on my enchilada and taco, and they provided a generous filling with beef on both. They were delicious as well. The Dr. Pepper was also refreshing, and I appreciated that they served it in a glass rather than a plastic mug. One thing I noticed in their menu is that they appear to pay attention to folks who have vegetarian and/or gluten free needs in their diet. This doesn't effect me, but it is appreciated, so kudos to the management for that. Unfortunately, I also noticed that they require a mandatory "large party fee" for parties of 8 or more, which is 20%. This didn't effect me either, but it would be annoying to me if I were in a large party. I think this is unnecessary, presumptuous, and a little annoying. It is essentially a tip that is mandatory, regardless of the quality of the food or the service. If you have a large party, just make sure you don't add another tip on top of this mandatory tip (for the large party) without realizing this. The management should reconsider this annoying practice. Overall, I had an excellent (almost perfect) experience here. I would definitely come here again the next time I'm in the area. My husband and I went to Red River Cantina last night. It's been awhile since we've been there. I ordered a watermelon margarita off the menu which showed it was $11.95. I noticed it was HUGE but I just thought they were generous with their drinks. When we received the check, I was charged $16.95 for this drink. I asked our server about the price difference and she stated "Oh, I gave you the Grande." OK, thank you but that's NOT what I ordered. Granted, maybe I didn't specify a size so that's my fault but she shouldn't have ASSUMED I wanted the grande size. It was too much for me so my husband had to finish it. I didn't make a big deal about it because I worked in the restaurant industry myself so I try to be kind and respectful but I think seems very sneaky to me. The server should ALWAYS ask what size they want and not assume they want the larger size. That's up-charging. I also wanted to mention that we received a FREE watermelon margarita on the rocks because I think they had an extra which we gladly accepted and weren't charged for. But that doesn't compensate for the $5 upcharge. Most people say I should have contacted the manager but I didn't want to make a big deal over $3 but it's the principle to me. It's just not honest and I don't like that. We still tipped her over 22% but I'm rethinking that now. Maybe I should have deducted that $5 from her tip since I think it was an intentional up-charge. Oh well... As far as the food, we ordered the brisket enchiladas. They were OK. We didn't love the barbeque drizzle on top of the sour cream sauce. It really threw off the flavor in our opinions so that was a bummer. The white queso, chips and salsa were all on-point! We go out to Tex-Mex restaurants every week and the other restaurants don't give us the larger size so it just seems sketchy. I don't think we'll be back for awhile because this left a bad taste in my mouth. Disappointing. read more

My husband and I visited Red River Cantina for a late lunch and loved it. The place is clean, and inviting. They started us off with complimentary chips and both green and red salsa, honestly so good. We also ordered the white queso with homemade chips, and it was phenomenal. For our meal, we tried the beef and chicken fajitas. Both were super tender with a great grilled flavor, plus fresh guac and amazing homemade corn tortillas. The beans and rice weren't our favorite, but everything else really impressed us. Our waitress was kind, attentive, and service was fast. Excellent experience overall. read more

It's been a long time since I had eaten at Red River Cantina. Yesterday I ate there with a group. I must say the food has gotten much better. The taco Al carbon had very little meat but tasty. I was very impressed with our waiter Kasey. He waited on 25 of us all with a smile and remembering each of our needs. He was great. read more

Hosted my after wedding ceremony dinner here in the party room area and it was great! We were about 40 people and our servers Ashley and another guy I didn't catch his name were so kind and efficient. Booking the room was so easy one of the managers Luke was really nice and accommodating to our requests about decor and how we'd like the tables to be arranged. Everyone's food came out in a timely manner and was delicious. I will say everyone who had drinks from the bar commented on how strong they were so beware if you're not a drinker. This place is funny. We came in on Halloween night and were seated immediately. As you would expect, the restaurant was basically empty. On most nights it is absolutely packed. My wife loves the margaritas, chips and salsas... which is rare.. she is pretty discerning in her tastes, and this place tops her list. Last evening before flying out and I wanted to have some Tex Mex as my last food memory from the visit. This place didn't disappoint. The music, the lighting and the bar all made for a great setting (minus the boar heads). Our waiter was energetic and attentive and our food came out quickly. Everything was really good and the portions were large so we all had leftovers. My dad and his wife said their skinny margaritas were bitter, but I had a pineapple drink that was amazing. I wished the chips had more salt and the salsa had more spice, but really minor adjustments and I know that's personal preference. I would recommend this spot for sure. read more

We really like coming to Red River Cantina. They are definitely one of the better Tex-Mex restaurants within League City. The food and service are always good. But, let's bite into some of the specifics. Food - As most Tex-Mex restaurants do, they serve chips and salsa before the meal. The red sauce is served warmed. It is really good. You can also get green sauce (for free) if you request it. It is served cold and is also very good. We really like the beef fajitas. Most of the time, they are cooked medium to medium well. The 1/2 lb of fajitas states it will feed 1-2 people. I'll go ahead and say it was plenty for the two of us. What I really appreciated about it is they bring both of us our own individual beans and rice. That is much appreciated. NOTE: If you want grated cheese or sour cream, it is sold separately. Sometimes we order it and sometimes we don't. Today, we didn't. Combo plates are fairly large as well and in most cases, have enough food that you and your partner can split it. Service - The staff is always friendly and efficient. Like any good wait person, they will try to upsell you. For instance, if you're ordering fajitas that feeds 1-2, make sure you order "the 1/2 pound fajitas, please." You do need to clarify because the menu clearly states they feed 1-2 but the one-pound says 2-3, whereas it's probably closer to 3-4. So, if you say "fajitas for 2", more than likely you're going to end up spending more and given the one-pound order. Be clear. If you're not clear, it's hard to blame the staff because you weren't!! Like I said, the staff is friendly and does a very good job. Tip accordingly. They deserve it. Bottom line - Really good Tex-Mex. Everyone seems to do a good job. I had a lunch date with my son, and after many suggestions from a facebook post, I went with Red River Cantina. One post suggested the Grandioso, which included 3 cheese and 3 chicken enchiladas with combination chicken & beef fajitas. My son and I sat at the bar, and the service was great. On Wednesday after 4pm, they are having a fajita special which is 1lb of beef and chicken fajitas for $32.95! Comes with a small queso, guacamole and pico de gallo. Also served with two sides of charo beans, Mexican rice and their homemade tortillas! Food was fantastic! I did try their house margarita which was delicious! We sat at the bar, had great service. The only downside is when you order, your food will be in front of you within 5-8 minutes, seriously, so only order when you are ready to eat. It like they rush and we don't like that. Food and service and prices. This establishment serve me most likely the worst Mexican food that I've ever had and I have mixed Mexican in every southern state from California to Florida.. Their prices are extremely high. - double at least any of the surrounding restaurants with better food. Our server really couldn't care less about us as customers. I asked for the check any proceeded to get platter and clean our table and the two tables next to us. Any to there and sorted the dishes for three or four minutes by size before he carried into the kitchen. The only thing good was that he brought me in a glass of water without asking. Overall, it was a pretty bad experience for two people that are very experienced in going to restaurants all across this country and Canada. I would not recommend this. Best Tex Mex we've had out here yet! So close to home and the ambiance is great, it's lively and always playing music and sports. Family friendly and great for a date night. We usually order the fajitas and their margs have different variety of flavors. The customer service is on point here! Highly recommend. I'll start with the Ambiance! We were guest on a large boat in the Kemah Christmas Boat Parade. The Red River Cantina graciously offered to cater dinner for us, and it was a feast of beef and chicken fajitas, rice, beans, two kinds of queso, guacamole, pico de gallo, chips, etc. The service was great as well with the food being delivered hot by the owner who accompanied us on the parade. There were a large number of boat that out did themselves with great themes and lots of decorations. What a great night! read more

We absolutely love Red River Cantina! The food is always fresh and delicious. The weekend happy hour is great. I love getting a medium tortilla soup ( which is pretty big ) and an order of the HH flautas with queso for dipping. The service is fantastic and VERY fast! We always have a drink before we order because the food is out in a snap! Margaritas are very tasty. The red salsa is warm (I love that) Make sure to ask for green sauce! Highly recommend. My good friend suggested this place. The drinks were good. Food was okay. The service wasn't the best - not friendly at all, and I usually like to keep things light. Not sure if she was having an off day. I was seated immediately, but it took a while for a server to take our drink order and our order for food. I wasn't too hungry so I went with the dip trio. If you need to feed a lot of people, there is no better option than Red River's fajita packs. It's as if you cooked a ton of delicious Mexican food for your friends and family, except you didn't have to do any of the work. And in 45 minutes or so, juicy, flavorful meat (chicken and steak - both outstanding), onions and peppers, guacamole, salsa, queso, chips, the best beans, rice, incredible fresh flour tortillas and whatever else you want to add on just shows up at your door, ready to go. The price is right, the food is delicious, and you can add on Mexican butter. I don't know what makes the Mexican butter Mexican, or what you're meant to use it for, but we got it, and no one was sad. I had an extensive conversation with the Business Owner about my review. He suggested he was ' in top' of the situation...that's the background to this review. I needed Queso in a hurry (lots of it) for a Cinco De Mayo party (about 50 people) on a To Go basis...reluctantly called them because they were on my way to the party...the fellow who took my order and I had a very specific discussion about the quantity and that each ' Large To Go' serving was 16 ounces...well it was not...it was 12 ounces. I brought this to the Managers attention and without hesitation made up the difference without an issue. I'm planning on going back for a Meal inside the restaurant. The owner said he would fix the problem and I suspect this manager was part of his solution. Kudos!!!! read more
