Since I moved to Saginaw back in 2024 this is now my favorite Mexican restaurant hands down. The staff here is always so freaking friendly and smiles on the faces and excellent service. Went in there several months ago, and it feels like it's gone downhill again. While the service was great, and the staff was very nice, the interior needs some updating. The chips and salsa were good, and the chicken enchiladas were OK, but I was more worried about the cleanliness in the kitchen to the point where I looked up the health inspection score. We will definitely be back but this place needs a desperate remodel. read more

Don't let the unassuming exterior and dated interior keep you away. This place is solid! So the parking lot could use work. But there's plenty of space in the dedicated lot. And the front door looks like a side entrance. Inside it's classic, old school Mexican restaurant. I sat in a booth and it was comfortable. Staff all gringo so no language barrier. Chips and salsa brought promptly with an ample bottle of salsa. Both items good. I had shredded chicken burritos. Quite good and well stuffed with chicken. Ranchero beans substituted for refried and these were a highlight. Full of ham, jalapenos and chunks of tomatoes. Really good! Choco taco for dessert. Nice, light and crispy dessert taco shell full of chocolate pudding. Pudding not as rich and chocolatey as I hoped but overall the dish was a solid B. In this age of endless corporate restaurants, only a few truly local and independent restaurants remain. El Sombrero is a treasured is institution in the Saginaw area and rightly so. The food is excellent, it isn't churched up like modern choices that need a story and list an arm long of ingredients and their origin stories. The food is simple Tex-Mex that we all loved and still do. The queso changed my religion, and now I submit myself to the great old ones. Service was awful. The place was empty, and I wanted to take my family here to try their food. As soon as we got to the restaurant, the vibe was wrong. I asked for horchata, and instead of a gentle "no" for an answer, I got a smart-ass response like I should know what they sell or offer. Overall, it was a bad experience. My son-n-law picked this place. I haven't been in 5 yrs since I moved away from Saginaw. We met my bestie Patti there too. So I don't know if my palate has been refined or if the quality of their food has gone down hill but I was highly disappointed because I used to eat at this place quite a bit when we lived by it. While waiting on us Patti ordered 1/2 order of bean & cheese nachos. I showed up & she was scooping all the toppings onto a new chip from the chips they bring you w/the salsa. (Not the 1st weird food thing she's done). I asked her what are you doing crazy. She said they gave me soggy nachos so I'm making me some more! LOL I do enjoy the flavor of their salsa. Not spicy by any stretch of the imagination but the flavor is on point! My daughter & I both got the avocado enchiladas w/chicken. Her husband ordered chicken verde enchiladas. Patti (bestie) ordered chile relleno w/ground beef. My enchiladas & rice were flavorless. The beans were good but I didn't come to spotlight beans because I can make some badass beans at home. Is all I could taste was cream & nothing else in the enchiladas. No avocado, no chicken, not even salt! I don't add salt, highly unusual. I was taught that's a slap in the face to the cook. Based on my dish MEH. The service was superb & I like that they take your payment at the table now. As for the rest of my table. Patti said she understood why the menu only said steak & chicken for the chile relleno. She said the beef was greasy & gross. She just ate the fried part, freak! LOL My daughter enjoyed her enchiladas (same as mine). She said I was crazy! Maybe! The verde enchiladas, when my son-law-eats, if it's good to him he lets out little mmm moans while eating. Im sorry, this place is awful. The margaritas taste like that mix you get in a bucket. All our food was... edible. And that's about it. Update: After many years of not returning because of the level of service we received, we decided to give el sombrero another go. I will say that the food is still ok, but not great. Arroz con pollo was tasty but the chicken was a little dry. Beef enchiladas were a little on the greasy side. The service this time was WAY better than last time, server was attentive and we didn't find ourselves looking around for our server like the last time. It won't be as many years before we return, and now when we need a quick option close to home, we know where we can get our chips and salsa fix. read more

Our favorite casual go-to Mexican restaurant. Generous servings with lots of comfort food flavor. Ashley is our favorite server! Attentive, keeps us laughing and we feel included in the party! First time for my husband and I. We recently moved here and love to try new places. We got the chicken enchiladas pie with a side of sour cream and 2 small, frozen margaritas. The food came out hot, not luke warm... thank goodness. That's how it should be :). Good portions. We left stuffed. The margaritas had a good flavor, but not strong. The highlight of the restaurant was the Minute Maid lemonade served and the beach volleyball being displayed on the TV. I ordered Carne Guisada - HA! First of all who puts big ass potato's in Carne guisada, their tortillas, white. The fajitas - seasoned with salt, salt and MORE SALT. First off ask for krystal to serve you! Best service I have ever had ! Total 10 star hospitality. The food here is full of flavor I had the fish tacos and they were full of flavors! I am from California where we are known for great Mexican food , this place would have no problem competing in California! Although I may be biased growing up eating at their restaurant and even working there as a teen I still love it to this day. It's one of my daughters favorites now. Usually the service is great the food is still as good as it always has been. The cheese enchiladas are my go to and my mom loves the chicken and rice. I almost always order a large queso and take some home with me. There had been a small mix up with asking for no rice and I accidentally got all rice (which things happen it's fine) the waitress apologized and brought me a whole plate of beans. As a native "Saginaw-ian," I've been a patron for as long as I can remember. We get take-out from here all the time. I will say, if you dine-in you'll get more rice & beans in comparison to what you'll get if you order take-out (just due to how much food can be put into the take-out container). The interior of the restaurant isn't the nicest. Having been inside many times, I don't really notice it anymore. But if it was my first time, I'd probably be put off by the lack of a nice, new interior. There is still a smoking section of the restaurant as well. The food is always good - I usually order the chicken enchiladas. Chips & salsa are always a hit. On my most recent dine-in experience, our food was taking longer than usual to come out. The waitress came by to tell us there was an issue with the ticket (it never printed in the kitchen so the order hadn't been made yet). The food came out quickly & very hot after the kitchen got the order. Our waitress even gave us a free order of sopapillas for our wait. Overall, very pleasant & I appreciated the waitress updating us on the situation. I will continue to frequent good ol' El Sombrero. Give it a try if you're in the Saginaw area, but don't set the bar toooo high ;) read more

Go here if you desire a plate of grease. Or incredible salty green sauce. Yikes. Pretty standard to below standard Mexican fare. The only thing I really enjoy here are their fajitas. There's enough in a single order for two people. There's also a bar inside, which is a redeeming quality, given the location. Another plus: they have some pretty cheap specials. This place is perfect if you just need a grease fix, don't feel like spending money, or driving. read more
