Coming from SoCal, I didn't have high expectations. Given this is the only Mexican restaurant I dined at in Alabama, I would say it's yummy and for the right price. I ordered an elote bowl, all the tacos, guacamole, a margarita, horchata, piña, and a sope. Their salsa bar and accoutrements were awesome and self serve. So glad their aguq frescas were homemade and not a mix. The margarita was decent. The carne asada taco was too dry. The lengua and camaron, and chorizo were the best out of the taco meats I tried. (Which was at least 7). The guac wasn't good, the avocados weren't fresh IMO. The sope was delicious. I came here twice and wish I ordered the sope both times. Came to this place on a whim based off the yelp reviews and honestly it was so worth it! The food was authentic, hot, fresh, and most importantly delicious. The margarita was also exceptional, I ended up ordering a spicy one and it definitely hit the spot. The staff were incredibly friendly and even brought a water bowl out for our dogs. The service was pretty good, no complaints there, they were friendly helpful and removed the dishes quickly after we finished eating. Unbelievably good! The employees were friendly, fast and were hispanic so not only was the food DELICIOUS, the ambience was totally on point. I was in San Diego a few years back, staying with my brother while he was stationed there and this food is just as good as the stuff I'd get right on the border. Flautas were delish, tacos were surprisingly flavorful even though they were bare, and the guac was tasty. I will say that the salsa was less than pleasing though. They didn't have bursting flavor or anything. Also, the hot salsa was actually mild. No bueno! Atmosphere: being that I came during COVID, it was very well organized and clean. They set up tables with signs that designated where to pick up your food. I obviously couldn't dine in, so I rated the pickup was 5 out of 5. They said 20 minutes and it was ready. I asked for salsa and they gave me three options of them. Nothing was missing and everything was packaged very neatly. Customer service: the ladies that helped us were more than helpful. They showed us where our food was when I picked up only half of my order. They wore masks and tried to keep their distance from the customers. As a California kid that somehow ended up going to college in Alabama, I often find myself craving food from home. That includes my regular squadron of local go-to taquerias; my all-time favorite food is Mexican food, and so I was hoping to find a good taco spot to hold me over until graduation. First up was El Taco Shop, which I had heard was the best and most authentic taqueria in the area. On my visit, I decided on four tacos: two carne asada ("azada" on the menu; their supposed specialty, $2.00 each), one lengua ($2.75), and one al pastor ($2.00). I have to say, I was expecting more considering the overwhelmingly positive opinions on the food here. The "azada" in particular had a weird aftertaste that I just couldn't shake off; good carne asada is always a hallmark of a quality taqueria, but it fell well short here. The lengua was close, but not quite there; while very tender, I think it could've used a touch more flavor. The al pastor taco was decent, and probably the best of the bunch; it was charred nicely and spiced reasonably well. Overall, I didn't have a bad experience here, and it wouldn't exactly be a total waste of your time to come in, either. But I'll stop short of saying that it was good enough to satisfy my Mexican food hunger pangs... high standards from your typical homesick Californian, I guess. read more
