My experience at Taco Veloz, Norcross, GA was awesome! I grew up in Los Angeles where I easy access to tasty and authentic Mexican food. Not so in Georgia where for decades, I've found the Mexican food has been quite disappointing. A friend suggested Taco Veloz, Norcross yesterday. Today is my SECOND day in a row where I have eaten at Taco Veloz. The food is quite tasty, as Chef Anthony Bourdaine, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, etc. have commented. Many years ago this place wasn't stingy with the meat. I ordered nachos with carne asada.... And that's the amount of carne they gave me .... They've gone so downhill. I recommend you go elsewhere. For real Mexican food go to Rey taco. read more

Taco Veloz KILLED TACO Veloz... It's a shame. I use to have real love for TacoV., but as of late they have lost the idea of producing quality food. I'd start with the last burrito I had, however...as much a tragedy as that was..it was a pleasure cruise compared to nachos embarked on today. It's a soggy day. I'm not feeling well. And as always, Comfort Food will make things all right Ugh... When good simple food goes bad, it kind of wilts the soul a little. I mean chips (should be fresh-ish), meat (should be fresh an heated), veggies (diced and fresh), beans (placed on as a support to the other items and FRESH!) .. you get where I going with this?!? Maybe the last couple health scores are a show of why things aren't good here anymore. Been very disappointed the last several months coming here. We come at least once a week and I do not eat meat but love their cheese quesadilla and some how keep getting meat in them, it's usually a to go order and doesn't always get checked so paid for food but don't get to eat again. My boyfriend gets the steak burrito he's usually been happy but he says the meat is now bland no more seasoning in it or it's only in the end. Won't be back until the scores go back to A, will watch closer for that info. The staff has always been pleasant though. read more

This is not a generic "Mexican" restaurant but a Baha California style Mexican fast food restaurant. I accidentally found this place years ago, the hand lettered menu and horchata dispensers took me back to the kind of place that is all over San Diego County. Not fancy, just great food! This is where the locals eat. Don't be surprised at the drive thru when they speak in Spanish first; and on a Saturday night you may be the only dude in line not wearing cowboy hat and boots. Favorites- Carne asada burrito, get it with everything. There's a salsa bar inside where you can get limes, some wicked hot verde, peppers, and cilantro. Get a side of chips and pico. They now serve fish tacos as well. I must eat here every time I am in Atlanta. There are several locations around town, but this one is my favorite. I love street tacos, unfortunately the ones at street carts in Salt Lake City usually disappoint; are greasy, and just not good and I haven't found a SLC restaurant that serves a quality carne asada taco either. My first visit in 1991 to El Taco Veloz was the main location on Buford Highway in Doraville, GA and I was immediately hooked. The Carne Asada Tacos were loaded with perfectly seasoned beef and the perfect amount of green salsa, cilantro and onion between two warm corn tortilla's. I couldn't get enough and made the trip from Gwinnett County at least once a week for years until I moved out west. I was so happy when they opened a second location much closer (at least in Atlanta terms) on Beaver Ruin Road in Norcross; then it was sometimes twice a week; yes they're that good!. Everytime I visit Atlanta every few years I still make the journey to El Taco Veloz and it is often the first place I go upon arrival. Sorry mom! read more

Many, many moons ago in the early 2000's I lived off Jimmy Carter. The nearest El Taco Veloz was on Buford Hwy. My roommates and I would spend many late nights there consuming copious amounts of carne asada burittos, and queso dip. In recent years, I've moved back to Gwinnett co. El Taco Veloz is still there and greatly expanded to added locations. As often as the macros of my eating plan allows, I indulge in carne asada burritos, and more resently tortas. Food is great i've been eating here for more than 10 years but one thing that always pissed me off and every time i went i left upset staff have very very bad attitude and very very rude if you're not Hispanic. The restaurant itself is pretty good, very good food, clean, and prompt with food times. However, Yanet needs to be fired we are regular customers and come to this location 2-3 times per week. Everytime we come here we spend $40+ for food and they have never tried to charge us when we ask for more salsa (which makes sense because it's a big order and 2 salsas won't go very far). However this time yanet made up this new rule that salsa is extra. Honestly this is the first time I've seen her here and hopefully the last. If I could I would give a ZERO!!! The cashiers here have the worst customer service! I asked for an extra salsa togo and the charged me .74. Mind you I purchased 6 tacos at $3 each and they wouldn't give another salsa. I was told it was 1 salsa per TWO tacos. Which makes no absolute sense. So if I buy a taco you won't give me a salsa??? Plus the button they used was for sour cream! This is so stupid! I will not be giving my money to these people. On top of that the 6 tacos were served on hard old tortillas. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars is because I really do like the food, and so does my husband, but the customer service could use some work. What is frustrating is that when I called to place my order, the lady could not understand me at all and I had to repeat myself so many times. I wanted a vegetarian quesadilla and I wanted a salad but without the meat on it. They basically told me they don't do those. I was like you can charge me for the full price just don't put the meat in it, they said no I can't do that the meat has to be in it. Then I go to ask them if it's made fresh or is everything pre-made. They said it was made fresh. So I just don't understand why they couldn't have left the meat off. So I ended up getting a steak quesadilla and a steak salad and I just picked off all the pieces of steak from the salad. I just don't get it. It seems like common sense. just because the salad comes with a protein, doesn't mean you have to get it. You could just leave it off especially if I'm willing to pay the full price. That just really irritated me and I felt like I was trying to explain myself and they weren't understanding. Then someone else got on the phone and was basically like "we're busy so you need to hurry up with your order"... Like I was wasting their time. Meh. What a disappointment, after reading all of the positive reviews. My friends and I were in the mood for some quick tacos, so we searched for a place in the area. The first place we were to was more of a bar than anything, with 10+ menu items, so we left and found this place. It was in a VERY sketchy looking area, with a large parking lot surrounded by abandoned businesses. That's not really a bad thing, since a lot of good food can be a hole-in-the-wall type place. There wasn't anyone when we first went in, and I decided on getting two tacos and a side of rice. I got the pastor taco and barbacoa taco. My entire order was around $5. The cashier tried her best, but had a difficultly counting out my change and figuring how much money I was supposed to get back. She was very confused by the whole process. My friends who paid with their cards didn't have any issue. The tacos were pretty and looked authentic, but wow... How utterly, unimpressively bland. The only way to add any flavor to the flavorless meat was to add some salsa, which was provided at a little salsa bar, but a crap shoot because they weren't labeled. The rice was some of the worst rice I have had for a while. It was bland, dry, completely unseasoned, and just... Bad. PROS: -Huge parking lot. -Fast service. -Free salsa bar. -Nachos were good. CONS: -Unimpressive quality and seasoning when it comes to their tacos. I got two different kinds, any both were exceptionally bland. -Rice was awful and dried out. Needless to say flavorless and unappetizing. -Communication issues when it came to handling cash. -Salsa bar didn't have any indication of what was what. -Water was behind the counter, so every time we emptied the small glasses, we often had to wait for someone to get back behind the counter before getting any water. THE VERDICT: I don't think I would come back here. The food was lackluster and disappointing, and nothing like authentic Mexican tacos I have experienced throughout Atlanta. My friend ended up getting some nachos with cheese, beans, chicken, and peppers, and that was actually pretty good. The cheese was all melty, the chicken was tender and shredded, the beans were flavorful. But for a place that is supposed to have authentic-style Mexican tacos (and tacos are in their name), I was completely underwhelmed by their tacos. Sure were a lot of white folks up in this joint. Because of that I was a little worried, but it actually lived up to being yummy and (as far as I know) authentic. I got a pollo taco, as well as a pastor. I wish I had tasted them both first, so I could have finished on the pollo. Instead, I ate all of that one, then had to finish with the pastor, which was not my favorite. For as much marinade as there was clearly visible, I would have expected much more flavor from the pastor taco. I don't think I would have missed the marinade at all had it not been on there. Also, the taco was very greasy, and there were a couple of large chunks of fat in the meat. That's probably normal, but it doesn't change the fact that I don't like that. The pollo taco was really good, though, even though the chicken was grilled, not shredded (which is my preference). The green salsa is quite hot, but not overly so. The pollo taco was delicious! And since they're both "especial" tacos, they were $.99 each. You can't beat that with a stick. Next time I'll try the carnitas instead (also $.99). I'm not sure why I didn't get that to begin with. El Taco Veloz has quite the reputation around town. Several people, including a friend at work from Mexico, had suggested it was the best place for authentic cheap Mexican food. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was a bit underwhelmed. It had been at the top of my must-try list for quite a while, but things kept popping up every time I planned to go. Today I just happened to find myself on Beaver Ruin at lunchtime and pulled a quick U-turn into the Taco Veloz parking lot. One taco lingua, one taco al pastor, and one taco carne asada. The lingua (beef tongue) was ok. I've had tongue maybe a half-dozen times, this was the least good I've had. Not bad, but not special. The best tongues I've had were rich, tender, and packed with flavor. Tongue has a unique grassy, gamey taste that plays well with other bold flavors. The lingua at El Taco Veloz only had a very strong tongue flavor and the texture of a sliced overcooked hot dog. The carne asada was good, but far from the best I've had. El Taco Veloz's carne asada lacked the outside crust I want from carne asada. My ideal carne asada taco is deeply browned bits of steak, with a crisp salty exterior that gives way to a robust beefy flavor and a slight chewiness. Theirs was a little soggy, maybe it had been sitting too long off the grill. The al pastor was the best of the meats, well marinated, bits of crispiness, juicy, but the taco was an absolute mess. The tortillas completely fell apart when I tried to pick it up. It was the first I ate, so it wasn't a matter of letting it sit too long. The service, order at the counter, pick it up when they call your number, was friendly, but there was a bit of a language barrier. The girl behind the counter tried to speak English, I tried to "habla Espanol" neither was succesful. Nonetheless, my order came out correctly. The building is a dump, it looks like it could fall down any moment. Definitely needs some rehab. But it's clean and the health score, posted in the dining room. is in the mid 90's. So not old and dirty, just old. To some degree, the dumpiness may be by design. I don't think taquerias are allowed to be too fancy. The Mexican soap operas on TV added to the atmosphere. I'll might give it another shot sometime, maybe another location. I saw people eating burritos and Tortas and they looked pretty good. read more

Been a customer of taco veloz for ages. Best bet get the flautas, or 3 tacos de carne asada ( or 4 if you are a big eater). Tortas are good too. The nachos are really good as well. red sauce ok, light green sauce eat with some caution dark green sauce, eat sparingly. beverages- Horchata is delicious creamy, tamarindo is tangy , have a mexican coke with real cane sugar. read more

I tried the steak tacos. They were very good. The chips and salsa suck, so skip that. Their Diet Coke tastes questionable, so skip the fountain drinks. Buy canned/bottled drinks instead. Again - tacos=good. Other stuff I ordered=suck. This place could be awesome, but it's just in a run-down, crappy location that's kind of dirty. Their seats are those annoying welded-to-the-floor pseudo booth things that just aren't comfortable unless you're in 6th grade. The air conditioning didn't appear to be working well. It's definitely not a place you want to sit down and eat. So, if you're gonna try it, get some tacos to go and take it home, or eat in your car. It's nicer. I promise. If this place would just upgrade the location a bit, I'd give it a better review. But for now, just two stars. read more

I have been getting food here for years but not so much lately since we moved. I recommend the fajita steak nachos and the burrito supreme. Tacos are also good. Make sure to ask for the salsa verde and avocado sauce. I always go through the drive through. This place is small and not inviting to eat inside. But the food more than makes up for it. read more
