I LOVE this place. Every time we come to Glenwood, we make sure to stop here for dinner. The food is great. The service is wonderful. And the drinks-- yippee! -- they have some special margaritas that always get the job done, ha! It is located in the upper level, which is fun. Makes for an exclusive feeling atmosphere. They always seat us in a window booth, which we like. I also just recently found out there is at least one location in Denver, too. Everything about this place is loud, proud, and over the top, but frankly, nothing hits like an oversized plate of green chili over a burrito after a cold day outdoors. Whether you've hiked to the Hanging Lake or spent a day jumping in different hot springs, El Tapatio is going to welcome you with open arms and a giant menu. You do have to climb up a set of stairs to get inside, so no, it's not the most ADA friendly of locations. If you can make it up, though, try to get a booth by the windows where you can people watch and where people get to ogle the plate of fajitas you're housing down. Waitstaff was super friendly if a little chaotic at times when things got busy, but rest assured that the chips + salsa were freely flowing, along with a nice cabbage slaw, and our massive plates came out sooner than we thought possible. It's honestly impressive how the waitresses were able to balance them on one hand while piping hot. We really did enjoy our orders (Camarones el Verdadero for me, and Mar y Tierra for him), but we were a little taken aback when his steak that should have been medium rare was a sinewy purple in the middle. Chef was quick to replace it, but still left us a bit unsettled. If you do make it through the meal, you're probably rolling home because did I mention already how the portion sizes are Shaq-sized? So hungry we forgot to take pics of our entrees. Super friendly server suggested the Spinach (and Mushroom) Enchiladas for me and Mike had the Enchiladas a la Crema. We both enjoyed our meals. I feel you can tell a lot about a Mexican place from their chips and salsa and so I liked El Tapatio from the get go. We had ordered a vegetarian fajita to share. The portion size was huge , enough for two of us with an extra side of rice. Thought the fajita was good overall I didn't like the guac and onions it came with as they felt a bit old to me.In dessert we order fried ice-cream. I don't think there was an option to customize the flavor.But again the portion size was humongous and it tasted amazing. Delicious food and friendly service! We came here because they were open late, most restaurants close their kitchen at 10pm which isn't very convenient for folks who stay at Glenwood hot springs until their 9pm close time and have to shower after. Our hotel suggested Mc Donald's because nothing is open late but luckily we found that El Tapatio closed at 11pm so that saved us. The service was fast and friendly. The portions were huge, plenty of protein! We enjoyed their cabbage salsa and chips too. The only complaint we have is the ceiling lights are offensively bright and could use a dimmer switch asap. They sat us immediately and gave us chips and salsa quickly too. I ordered the blackberry margarita, and our wiater Brian recommended we do om the rocks. That way, our drinks are less watered down. That was a great recommendation because our drinks were very strong. We weren't too hungry, so we shared the queso fundido and the birria tacos. They were both amazing! My boyfriend and I went out for what we didn't anticipate to be one of our favorites experiences at a Mexican restaurant in the Valley... but here we are!!! The second we walked in we were greeted (not to mention the dining room is PACKED! And it's a Saturday night at 7:30PM) by a busy woman who made time to let us know it would be a moment for a table. Another man came up maybe 30 seconds later and asked us if we wanted food and we said heck yeah! So he cleared off the nearest & cutest high top table (pictured below) and sat us immediately! There was a piece of metal about the size of a staple in my food. We brought it to their attention and they offered 15% off our bill but then only took 15% off 3 items for a $7 discount.
