In general, I'd rate El Taquito 4/5 stars based on the food. It's delicious and filling. I've only had some of the menu items, though I'm a big fan of their carnitas. The reason I've rated the restaurant 3/5 is because of their take-out service. I've ordered the carnitas plate twice for take-out. Once in person & the most recent one online.. BOTH times, my tortillas were not given to me. For me, the tortillas make or break a carnitas plate. Sadly, both times I didn't realize until I was back home and at that point was not motivated to drive back for the tortillas. Disappointed with this reoccurring issue. I don't see much to do about it either as both times I realized too late. It's just frustrating to get home, excited to eat and be missing a crucial item... In general this is a solid place to eat.. but if you order take out, CHECK YOUR FOOD before you leave. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I am usually not the one to write reviews about a restaurant unless I am really disappointed with it. This place is definitely an eyecatcher when you see it on Yelp but as far as the food goes it has no flavor whatsoever. I got the fajita nachos because it seemed as if everybody was getting them and enjoying them a lot. My nachos were burned ams the beans tasted like if they were straight out of a can. Only two stars versus one because the atmosphere on the inside is beautiful! How in the hell can ANYONE mess up chicken tortilla soup??!! The "soup" was bland, canned chicken pieces were used, carrots (they were yummy) and tons and tons of friggin celery!! I tasted no authentic Mexican seasonings like cilantro, garlic, cumin...just an occasional sting from a lone jalapeño. I got my order to go. The soup was placed in a microwaveable dish and the sides in an additional styrofoam container. Proceeded to dump the sides in my soup once I reached my destination and saw: rice, chips, mozzarella and LETTUCE!! Why in the hell would lettuce be in there??!! No cilantro, no lime..friggin lettuce!! (Yes, I had to pick the lettuce out!!) At any rate I am disappointed. We have been coming to El Taquito for years. Unfortunately the quality overall has gone down. As soon as we walked in last night the smell of Fabuloso was nauseating. The woman at the cash register was watching videos on her phone and had an AirPod in, which she obviously didn't turn down because she couldn't hear when I was giving my order. The crema that came on the mini tostadas looked like it was ranch, kinda weird. The salsa bar was so low stocked you had to scrape to get any salsa out. I attempted to get a refund for the drink I had bought (I thought it was authentic limonada but it tasted like powder). I only took one sip and chose to return it. The same cashier told me she wouldnt give me a refund. Instead of listening to my concerns she was dismissive and told me what I was saying wasn't true, pointing to the pulp in the machine. When i asked further she said she was still learning the cash register and didn't know how to process a return, despite me paying in cash. I've never been to a restaurant where customer service isn't a priority! Most likely not coming back. read more

We were expecting it to be good since it seemed popular but the food was average and not flavor packed. We ordered a variety of the tacos and the beans. This place is an absolute must!!!! I love love love loooove tacos, they're my favorite comfort food and this restaurant makes phenomenal tacos!!! I've been here twice already and planning to make many more trips. My go to tacos are always the beef fajita tacos so I ordered the los originales during my two visits. Their tacos are huge and they are definitely not stingy with their meats! I also enjoyed their pinapple and watermelon agua fresca's, very refreshing and a nice finishing touch after your meal! Don't know how I have not written a review here after all this time, but El Taquito is one of my favorites in Austin. I never get up in time to really try their breakfast and this is solely based on the few items I have tried, but one of the best taco places I've been to. Being open til 4AM (I think it's only on the weekends now) is definitely a plus because I stay up late and this place started my late night taco cravings. My favorite has to be the bistek los famosos which is basically delicious beef steak with avocado, fresh cheese, cilantro and onion (but I take out the onion). Honestly, what makes the tacos really good is the salsas here. I have yet to find another place have salsas that I truly enjoy like El Taquito. The meat isn't dry at all which is a plus. Aside from tacos, I looooveee the Queso Fundido with chorizo even though it's probably sooo bad for me. You have to eat it while it is hot and fresh because all of the cheese will be very difficult to eat when it's cold. My favorite drink that I've tried is the melon juice (basically cantaloupe juice). It's the orange one in the large jug as I am unsure what they call it because I point to it every time haha. The juice is always made fresh and never too sweet. I like that there is pulp and that it's sooo refreshing. I have not had any other place make or serve better fresh juices compared to here. Only downside is that it gets super packed sometimes so the wait could be longer than desired for to-go orders, minimal parking when it's overly packed, and the prices are higher than other taco places I have been to. BUT the salsas make up for it all...wishing I could have some tacos right about now. read more

This a great authentic taco joint. I tried the Al pastor, steak, and carnitas tacos. They were all delicious but the carnitas were my favorite with the al pastor taco coming in at a close second. We split three tacos and a nacho plate. This is the best and most incredible spot we've visited while in Austin for Mexican food. It was so fresh and boasted cilantro, fresh meat, cotija cheese, and nachos topped so well that you ran out of chips before cheese and scrumptious refried beans. This place is so good! It's a bit pricy in my opinion for the amount of food but nonetheless, very delicious. The tacos are greasy but I'm pretty sure that's what gives it so much flavour. They have an outdoor patio seating and the colours of the place are cute. You can serve you lars elf with as much taco sauce or lines as you want at the self serve bar. It's very busy! SLOW, SLOW, SLOW service! I really didn't want to write this review because I like the food & I enjoy the drinks here. They make Micheladas from homemade salsa and let me tell you...they're freaking amazing! However, the slow service has become too unbearable and it's really deterring me from coming back. Sucks because this place is very convenient from where I live and could be a gem. This place has potential but it's poorly run. Last night was the absolute worst experience we've had here! We waited 18 minutes in line. It wouldn't have been such a big deal except there were only 3 people in front of us....THREE PEOPLE It doesn't take 6 minutes per person to order... 2 minutes at most! #1 Line to get food is NON-EXISTENT because there is NO REAL LINE. Please get a rope or something to divide the people waiting in line to order from the patrons who are eating. Being squeezed in between tables of customers eating is very uncomfortable for BOTH the person in line and the customer eating food (having been on both sides, I can tell you it's an awful experience). #2 Cashier should STRICTLY be taking orders NOT making alcoholic drinks, serving food, talking to the cooks, talking over the intercom, and dealing with wrong orders from customers. We waited in line because the cashier was forced to take on too many roles which slowed down the service for all. Have two cashier drawers open at a time so when things get really busy the lines don't stay congested! Also, stop making your cashier do everything and hire a food runner! # 3 Get a food runner - While the cashier takes orders, the food runner makes & serves drinks, food, talks to cooks, and resolves food issues with customers (if any). # 4 Hire a bus boy - Because of the high turn around of people eating at this place the tables are always dirty, dishes piles up, crumbs and napkins are everywhere. Tables should be cleaned and wiped down. Someone should really keep an eye out on the napkin dispensers and silverware because they tend to run out. # 5 Staff should try to be friendlier & attentive - So out of the 10 times I've been here only once I recall the staff being very friendly and welcoming one time ever (I think the manager or owner was there). Other than that, I'd say they aren't very personable. For instance, I was waiting in line and once I got to the cashier he just completely turned around and walked away without a word to do something. Maybe the cashier should say something like, "One moment please, I'll be right back." Not just walk away as someone walks up to the counter to order. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened to me here. I really think it's because they are taking on too many tasks and are so busy they can't be personable. # 6 Indoor seating is crammed like sardines in a can, I usually eat in their outdoor area. Overall, please hire more employees (food runner, bus boy, etc). Try to clean your tables before new customers come in to sit down. Also, the backyard area setup is really cool and beautiful but it's constantly dirty back there. Crumbs on tables and chairs are always scattered everywhere. Try to make it a point to clean that area up and put chairs back where they belong. read more

I loved the red salsas kick and heat as I love haberno salsas but you want a good taste and for some reason wasn't the worlds biggest fan. The tacos contrary to belief of somebody's who has tried for years to find a food taco place in Austin and eaten in Mexico, California and valley here in Texas this is in my opinion best Tacos. That's not saying much since in my opinion Austin and SA have such average Mexican food and good Tex Mex. Nonetheless I cant comment on food safety since every time I've gone I've had no issues. We were looking for something authentic but also not a total diner w bad quality ingredients and not a taco truck. I usually get my good mexican food from a truck, but El Taquito may change that. Used to go frequently when i lived in the area, but its still the bomb after a few years. We wanted something smothered in a good enchiladas sauce - we got it. We wanted queso - there chile con queso is top notch imo. Seasoned well and perfect consistency not too thick not too thin. Tacos were great, seasoned perfect, and cheesy goodness and onions/cilantro galore. Ended it with some housemade horchata that was the real deal. Great cooks, friendly n fast service, i think El Taquito is my go to mexican restaurant from here on out. read more
