Diane and I dashed here for a sumptuous lunch after a blood draw, beginning with complimentary Tortilla Chips and a fairly mild Salsa. We received several more warm Tortilla Chips after I ordered Medium-sized Guacamole to join them. The Guac was mild and tasty. A Small Bowl of Albondigas Soup with six Mexican meatballs was not small at all. It also contained delicious broth and sweet al dente carrots. Onions and Cilantro were also provided to toss in the soup. And I made good use of the two Flour Tortillas and Mexican Rice that came with the soup, in addition to a side of Refried Beans that I purchased to go with the tortillas. Guac was also applied to the two burritos essentially created with the tortillas. I lost track of my food, reaching for a second Flour Tortilla to fill before realizing that I had already consumed both tortillas. I also ate a Hard Shell Shredded Beef Taco that was packed with meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. Augmented with some Guac, the crunchy taco was a delightful ending to a sumptuous meal. At the time I didn't even realize that because we were dining on a Tuesday, the taco only cost a mere $3.00. Had I known this before I received the check, I would have purchased another hard shell taco to take home for lunch the next day. Meanwhile, Diane was thrilled with her special order of Battered Shrimp but considered the frozen krinkle-cut French Fries to be rather ordinary. Service was ultimately very good, but the one waiter in the dining room during our stay was out of the dining room much of the time. The albondiga soup was old, you could taste it, and not even hot... I'm sure it was in the temperature danger zone. The only good thing were the drinks... They tasted authentic. When the food arrived, it looks yummy but girl, it was bland! The arroz was dry and the frijoles were undercooked. The shredded beef taco was so unseasoned and so we're my chicken flautas. It was just boiled old meat. The Chile relleno had little flavor cause of the sauce but the amount of bland cheese all over the dish made me sadder. The service didn't really pay attention to the customers, they asked a quick "how is it" without listening and walked away for the most part. We also waited awhile for our check when they visablly so us stop eating. The waiter towards the end asked if we didn't like the food; because we didn't want a to go box and because we barely touched our food. Before I could even open the menu, they had chips, salsa, and my drink on the table. That's the kind of service that makes a great first impression. I ordered two carne asada tacos and two cabeza tacos. The carne asada tacos were the standout--tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The cabeza tacos were good too, although I think the meat could use just a little more seasoning. The tortillas weren't handmade, but they were grilled nicely and paired well with the tacos. The atmosphere was relaxed with great décor, plenty of seating, and I sat at the bar for a quick 30-minute lunch. The waitress was incredibly friendly, and I appreciated that the chef personally brought my food out to me. Overall, I'd give El Tepeyac an 8.7/10. If you're looking for the best Mexican restaurant in Redlands, this is it. I've eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants around the area, and nothing compares. The food is consistently fresh, the meat is always perfectly seasoned and full of flavor, and the salsa is tasty hot and is absolutely addictive. The service is just as amazing as the food. The staff always remembers us, makes us feel welcome, and goes out of their way to take care of everyone. I've watched them accommodate large groups even when the restaurant is busy they always seem to find a way to make it work. They also have a dog-friendly patio, which is a huge plus if you like bringing your pup along. Their Taco Tuesday specials are fantastic, and the $5 margaritas are one of the best deals in Redlands. I don't drink alcohol anymore, but even their virgin margaritas are incredible they're honestly some of the best I've had. Whether you're stopping in for lunch, dinner, Taco Tuesday, or to watch a game at the bar, this place has such a fun atmosphere with TVs, great food, and genuinely kind people. He was right. Overall it's a simple and straight-forward restaurant. The staff was quick and attentive. They answered my questions and made useful suggestions. The chips and salsa were served promptly. The salsa was spicy but not hot enough to kill its flavor. The chips were standard fare. As to the "whole enchilada", or in this case my Burrito Ranchero, was quite large. You can see the scale by comparing it to my salsa bowl. The insides were about 80% pulled pork, whose flavor was okay and pulled apart readily. The rest of the filling was beans and rice. The tortilla was flavorful and held together well. Coming into town from Arizona, we stopped at this place for some lunch. The service was nice. The waitress was personable and we had refills when we needed them. The Michelada was delicious and had a good taste on the rim. The beer seemed a bit skunky but, the mix masked it. Would have tasted better with fresher beer. Horchata was good. My husband ordered the Green Enchiladas with a side of caldo de albóndigas. I ordered the full order of Caldo de Albóndigas. The Green Enchiladas with Chicken were not too good. My bride and I decided to sample El Tepeyac after a leisurely afternoon and evening browsing potential future homes in nearby Yucaipa. First impressions? Don't be majorly concerned w/ the restaurant's simple exterior, where it's nestled into a corner of a largely empty shopping center. We were already aware of the restaurant's robust 4 of 5 star Yelp average score, and that gave us the extra "oomph" we needed to overlook the quaint, homely exterior. The courtesy chips and salsa merits mixed reviews- 2 stars for the almost stale, greasy chips buy 4 stars for the fresh, well seasoned salsa. Both of our entrees came w/ our choice of soup or salad. Major kudos to the staff for their delicious, rib-sticking Caldo de Albondigas soup! The proportion of carrots & celery to the meatballs was perfect and the meatballs were well formed and authentically spiced. My wife ordered chicken enchiladas. Despite recovering from an upset stomach resulting from a food poisoning scare 24hrs ago, Leti surprisingly devoured both enchiladas and all of her refried beans. I ordered their #9 combo, featuring Chile relleno, a cheese enchilada and a hard shell machaca taco. The quality of the Chile relleno was superb! Large Anaheim Chile with a toothsome bite, lightly breaded, bursting with melted cheese & egg. The enchilada was also exemplary. The hard shell taco featured the crispy fried texture of the meat topped w/ the pleasant textural counterpoint of fresh shredded lettuce, piquant salsa and decadent shredded cheddar cheese. Que sabroso!! The only thing that kept my combo from earning a revered 5 rating? The rice was served lukewarm and was lackluster, poorly seasoned and studded with....zilch, in the way of vegetables. The prices are just right, too. Expect to pay $14 to $18 per entree. Our order, which included a septuplet (7) of Carne Asada street tacos for kids at home, came out to $60, including taxes and 24% tip. Developmentally, my only constructive criticism would be to gently remind the staff to not make it so obvious that it's "closing time."
