I first discovered El Topo food truck at Wednesday's famers market at city hall. I don't think I tried anything, I just heard all the buzz and saw one really long line. However, I had my first taste of their barbacoa tacos at the 2018 Butchers Ball - in which they one first place! - and was an instant fan. Since then, it's been my weekend ritual to grab their Oaxacan-inspired fair at Saturday's Urban Harvest Farmers Market. The barbacoa-based "Houston" is the way to go (and what won the aforementioned 2018 Butcher's Ball), along with the "Gringo" breakfast taco, but since going meat-free, I get their vegan-friendly "Austin" taco which is a medley of seasonal veggies, a tangy adobo barbecue sauce, pepitas and herbs. And the tortillas - the homemade corn tortillas are THE BEST I ever tried... and my mother is a bomb-ass Mexican cook who can whip up some delish corn tortillas. Ever since I tried their made from scratch tacos at a recent YEE, I've been trying to find the El Topo food truck to eat their tacos again. I came here relatively early (I preface this by saying that I'm not a morning person at all. Lol. Night owl all the way). I ordered their vegetarian and barbacoa tacos. Both were as I remembered them. The grilled cauliflower could've been cooked a little more in the veggie taco. Otherwise, both tacos were enjoyable. The veggie taco had a spicy kick and lovely texture contrast with pickled veggies and sunflower seeds. I also added avocado sauce to both tacos. I freaking love that sauce. Although they're a bit pricey for tacos, every ingredient down to the corn tortillas themselves are made from scratch. So, they're worth it, IMO. Tony, the owner, told me that he's in the process of establishing his own restaurant in the Heights area. These tacos will be on that menu as well. It will be cool to see the transition. I had high hopes for El Topo. This food truck serves up authentic tacos and you can always find them at Urban Harvest Farmer's Market. They also have a brick and mortar location. A common thread you'll find from reviews is that their tacos are pricey but the quality ingredients make up for it. And they do. What took things down a couple of notches for me was lack of execution. I went with the Houston taco which comes with barbacoa, onions, cilantro, and an addictive aoili. I asked for no onions but my taco had onions. I also went with la gringa taco which is a breakfast taco with scrambled eggs, bacon, and sauce. Two complimentary salsas are yours for the taking too. The eggs were fluffy and the bacon had a lot of flavor to it. Here's when things really started to go downhill. When paying for my order, they asked me if I wanted to add a tip. I assume this is a COVID measure so that you don't have to touch the Square device making it a contactless transaction. While I appreciate that, indirectly asking for a tip is a bit aggressive. I bought items from at least five other vendors at the farmer's market and didn't experience this technique. Nor have I at any other restaurant. I decided to leave a tip and it was a clear tip as it rounded up my order to $12. When I got home and checked my email, I found that they had added an extra 63 cents to my tip. Given the weird amount, it likely wasn't a mistake. 63 sends doesn't matter to me but it was the principle of the matter. Was at Urban Harvest Farmer's Market on two different weekends so I'm assuming it's there all the time. Also sometimes parks up next to Kirby Ice House so you can have a bite while drinking. These are some /expensive/ tacos. The breakfast taco will run you $5 and that's the cheapest one - there are others for $8 or more. They are hearty tacos, don't get me wrong, but you can definitely get ones just as large for less elsewhere. Breakfast Taco comes with a house made bacon which is much too thick and chewy - prefer that bacon in breakfast tacos come crisp and crunchy. I think it could be due to the wait time for our orders in the sun as well, I think we must have waited over 30 minutes just for 3 items. The taco truck clearly needed more staff on duty to meet the demand that day. My take on the items we ordered: - Oaxacan-style black bean + cheese taco: This was a freebie from the Yelp Elite event. We stopped by the farmers market to try out this food truck, and it was great! I ordered the Houston Taco, which was barbacoa on a corn tortilla. I can't decide which was better--the barbacoa or the tortilla--they were both so good! The barbacoa was high quality and perfectly cooked, and the corn tortillas was one of those thick, obviously homemade corn tortillas, so good. I took a bite of my friend's breakfast taco on a flour tortilla, and, while tasty, the Houston barbacoa taco was definitely my favorite. I will say that El Topo's tacos are perhaps one of the more expensive taco's I've had in Houston at $5 per taco, particularly for a taco truck. This place is truly a hidden gem! I knew it had tacos but I didn't know the tacos would be some of the tastiest I've ever had. I mean... in Texas we have A LOT of tacos but none like this. Get the barbacoa ... it will melt in your mouth. The brussels were outstanding. The sauce on the blue wings was perfect. The owner, Tony, greeted us and told us all about the concept and guided us through the wine list. We appreciated that and needed some advice bc the wine list is VERY unique. This was one of the most enjoyable dinners we've had in Houston. I have eaten more than my fair share on Saturday mornings at the Urban Harvest Farmers Market. I have sung their praises from the mountain and told many they serve my favorite tacos in Houston. The owner is a hell of a nice guy and deserves every success. Having said that, I won't order from the farmer's market food truck again after last weekend. The tacos (Houston - barbacoa & Austin - veggie) were both great. Tortilla was perfect, food well executed, [kisses fingers] just perfect. My problem is that the last few times I've ordered, it took well over 20 minutes to get my tacos. Last Saturday, for example, there was nobody in line in front of me and nobody around waiting on orders. My order [see above] was simple. Hell, there were only five things on the menu. There simply is no excuse to have to wait that long for the food. I can't imagine how long I'd have to wait if there was a line. This review is specific to the truck at the Saturday Urban Harvest farmer's market. I LOVE the tacos. I've made trips to the farmer's market on a blazing hot summer day just to satisfy my craving for their delicious food... BUT, there's always something that goes wrong. Often it's complete chaos in front of the truck because it's hard to hear them call out the ready orders, or the food takes inexplicably long (I've waited 20+ min) to come out. Today I ordered a gringo taco excited for the "crispy potato confit, three sister farm eggs, scratch made heritage bacon, melty queso oaxaca, and herbs". What I got was egg and cheese on a torn tortilla that made it impossible to pick up and eat as a taco. I didn't realize it until I walked around the corner and it seemed hectic in the kitchen so I chose not to ask them to remake it but I'm annoyed how often I'm disappointed. read more

The food is fantastic. we have been regulars here for quite some time. recently they have added a "brick and mortar" fee in addition to an automatic 22% gratuity included in the bill. it results in exactly a 30% upcharge. this is nonsense. the gratuity says on the receipt that it is "for parties of 6 or more", but they included it automatically on our party of 2. again, great food but the overcharging for a brick and mortar charge and auto gratuity is reason to find somewhere else. it makes me sad but I won't be back. read more

It's a food truck! I would probably give this a 3.5 stars rating. We saw this at the Kirby Ice House. They were a bit overwhelmed and a line stood there for maybe 15min before they started taking orders again. I ended up ordering what they marketed as a wagyu beef taco, a spicy pork belly taco, and some barbacoa grilled cheese. The food was good but really heavy and a bit on the salty side. My friends stole a few bites too of my food and really liked my orders but also agreed it was pretty heavy. I would say, try this place out but don't plan on doing anything productive after! Regardless, it did seem kind of moderately higher price. This is based on some of the other prices that I saw in Texas and based on some folks' reactions when they realized the prices were for one taco. The austin // $5 This reallllllly hit the spot. Tons of flavors that were cohesive. The #cauliflowers had a nice little char with a crunch. It had a deep sweet tomato base with spices and oil that made it seem like it could be in the mole family. Not really that chocolately though, it's interesting. The pickled red onion gave a nice visual addition and the acidity was a great alternative to squeezing lime on top. If want to eat plant based but have a hankering for something meaty I'd suggest giving this a try. I had not previously known about El Topo from their food truck or farmers market. I heard about them around the way and when I heard their brick and mortar opened, I was anxious to check it out. The space itself is beautiful. They've done a beautiful job designing it. The colors they chose are very uplifting and relaxing. Since I hadn't tried any of their food, I thought I should start with the breakfast tacos since that's what they seem known for. I ordered the Barbacoa taco, and another one (I forget the name) with bacon egg cheese potato. They also had a lovely basque style Horchata cheesecake which of course I had to try. It was decorated nicely with edible flowers.. I ordered everything to go. I loved EVERYTHING! Beyond delicious. Soooo flavorful! The Barbacoa had a nice crispyness and delicious pickled onions. You would think a bacon egg cheese potato taco would be basic, buttttt not here. The eggs fluffy, potatoes caramelized and just SO good. Cheesecake was amazing. I love that it wasn't super sweet. Anyway I cannot wait to go back. Some could say it's pricey, but you get what you're paying for in terms of quality. I'm looking forward to trying their croissants and various other things. El Topo came to our apartment complex last night and I was really looking forward to it! The event was from 5-7 and we got there at 6. They were already out of the barbacoa which is on multiple items. So I ordered the quesadillas (which are vegetarian because I can't eat pork) and my fiancé ordered the patty melt. I didn't specify that I didn't want cilantro because it wasn't listed as an ingredient. It was listed on a few other items so I assumed it wasn't on the quesadillas but I was wrong. When I received it, it had HUGE pieces in it. They quickly remade it for me though! I wouldn't order it again.. it wasn't anything special and had a ton of beans on it. My fiancé enjoyed the party melt and I loved the pickles that came with it! In conclusion, I would have liked to try the beef options and maybe would suggest to them to have backup help. I stopped by when my original lunch plans fell through, and the food was AMAZING. I got the Houston tacos, and I honestly it was the best taco I've had in a long time. I grew up in Southern California and lived in Texas for several years so I've had some really excellent Hispanic food, and I think this takes the cake. I've eaten at this food truck about ten times now at the market and I've always been blown away. I've tried a number of items from their menu and it has all been delicious. They make their own tortillas and have great sauces and salsas. Good portions and reasonably priced for the quality you are getting. I've been waiting months for this truck to open! The guys did not disappoint. It's pretty crazy how much care goes into every tiny detail on their menu. We went for the breakfast tacos and the chilaquiles. Their tortillas ruined my ability to enjoy other tortillas. That was probably the best bacon I've ever tasted and the sauces/salsas were all just right. Before the chilaquiles and breakfast tacos even came out though I had already downed a bottle of their homemade jalapeno/pina kombucha (wow), ate a cup of the flannacotta dessert and drank a cup of their cold brewed coffee. Flan is normally not my go-to, but their take on it was delicious. I want more just thinking about it. I can't say enough about the kombucha. I bought 3 more bottles to take home! I got to taste their homemade yogurt and then bought some of that to take home as well. I ate it today and it's brilliant; they make their own muesli topping and give you some divine honey they probably made with their own specially bred bees. The topping is crazy good mixed with the yogurt and honey. They need to sell it by the case, along with their kombucha!
