This is hotel is not as represented on the Internet. It is run down (but our room was clean). We did not use the shower. The ac was loud and not helpful at all. The Marlyn Monroe room did have a full freezer so that was great. There were rooms with card board over windows. I think those weren't open but still disconcerting. The owners provided a lot of great info (with no concern if you wanted it). He's been saying that 5-7 min speech for years. I'd recommend avoiding but some are up for an adventure may like it. read more

I find it unbelievable that anyone would recommend this place! The bathroom left a lot to be desired, so much so that we didn't even want to use the shower! We almost cut our losses and just left, but the bed was clean, so we stayed for the night to sleep. read more

The managers were amazing upon booking. He let me know all the local info on Historic Route 66 and even provided a map of local restaurants and events. Will absolutely stay here again. We stayed in the Marilyn Monroe themed room and it was so cute and comfortable. It's a quaint place with great character and excellent customer service given, above and beyond. We found El Trovatore from YouTube recommendation and was not disappointed. It's quaint and funky and is the most authentic way to experience Route 66. The husband and wife owners are super personal and will tell you everything you need to know about Kingman. We stayed in the upgraded Road Trip room. Parking, check-in, check-out was all a breeze. The bathroom could use some further renovating but for one night, it didn't bother me, and the the price is great. Definitely recommend. read more

Excellent stay, great hospitality, awesome owners with an adorable rescue dog. Great location right off Route 66, walking distance to Walgreens and a steakhouse & bar. We stayed in the former Elvis room (now the road trip room), which was renovated recently on a reality tv show. The design of the room was pretty chic and cool but pretty different from the other rooms around (the show only did 2 rooms). It was clean and decently maintained, and the bed was comfortable. The important thing though is the owners are just such nice people. I had a call that was pretty pivotal to my career, and since Wi-Fi was not ideal in our room they let me use the hotel lobby for two hours so I don't miss my big career moment!! So much gratitude for their flexibility and kindness. Overall, such a unique stay with interesting history. You must check this out if you're on Route 66! read more

I have stayed here 3 times so I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed this hotel yet. Most recent stay was last week on my way home to NC from California. I have stayed in the James Dean Suite, the Audrey Hepburn Suite, and the Marilyn Monroe Suite. This is a classic Old Route 66 hotel not far from I-40. Given its age, there are some things that are not to contemporary specs -- the bathroom is smaller than you'll find at the Marriott. But everything you need is here: clean bed, fridge, microwave, AC. Checking in is an experience in itself as the owner will tell you everything you need to know about Kingman. I'm sure the past year was hard on the El Trovatore (there are a huge number of international travelers who are fascinated by the "Old West" and love Old Route 66), but I hope as the world opens back up they can rebound. I would love to see the neon lights on the classic sign and tower lit up again. Some things could stand a deep cleaning, like the curtains and showers. But nothing I can't live with for a night. read more

When I go on Route 66 trips, I do my best to stay at mom-and-pop motels and usually come out with a great experience (I'm more of a hotel/motel chains guy). El Trovatore was high on my list for Arizona, as this has so much history to it, as well as the famous people who have stayed here. Don Knotts, Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and James Dean have all stayed here! I'd give this a much higher rating, but the owner just came off as...weird. (Cleanest word I can think of) Basically he came off as a know-it-all, and if you corrected him, he'd snap. After I told him my name to look up, he was like "Well, you still HAVE TO PAY FOR IT!". Okay, so I did. I guess he's just one of those guys who you really have to know his sense of humor. Nonetheless, he was very enthusiastic about his favorite local sights and reservations to do in Kingman. Gave me some great recommendations, some I was already aware of. Stayed in the James Dean-themed room (don't know if it was the actual room he stayed in). As for the room and overall stay, it's basically what you expect at an old motel. Of course, it has been newly remodeled and redone. It has wi-fi and satellite TV. But if you're looking for fancy bathrooms, yeah that would be the dealbreaker for some people. I didn't mind though. It's always part of the Route 66 experience to stay at these places. Bed was comfy, it was in a quiet scenic area and all I had to do to check out was drop the key by the door. What can I say? I love this place. I've stayed here four or five times over the years, and I've always enjoyed it. The owners are genuine, good people who are trying to give their guests a good experience by putting heart and soul into their business. The place has tons of character, with movie star themed rooms and a long mural of Rte 66 that stretches along the motel. I've stayed in the Marilyn Monroe and James Dean rooms, among others. The rooms are kept very clean, and have a fridge and microwave. The bathrooms are not terribly modern - the James Dean one does not have ventilation, so take that into account if you need to. Location is good, and you're never far from whatever else you want to do in Kingman. I'll take this place over any Comfort Inn or Motel 6. It's just cool. Mike sez absolutely check it out! read more

Stayed here for 2 reasons, the nostalgia and it being dog friendly!! After hearing and seeing this place, I knew we had to stay here on our Route 66 road trip!! This place is home to the "World's Longest Route 66 Map" and it spans practically the whole motel. It is a mom and pop place and so the vibe is very friendly and homey. Checking in was super easy and the lady welcomed my dog with open arms! You also get a Route 66 pin when you check in! Rooms are are fair priced, for a busy June trip, I think my room was about $80 plus the pet fee. Each room is themed different and we had a Marlon Brando room. Upon entering the room, the TV is on to classic TV and there are Marlon Brando pictures on the walls. The room is older, so don't expect some 5-star amenities. If you stay here, it is for the vibe and nostalgia! They do have wi-fi and the room comes with a mini-fridge and microwave. There is a unusable tub however, so I guess you can just put your suitcase there or use it as some sort of storage. The room is a bit small and cramped and the bathroom is a bit awkward shaped. However, I came here knowing what I came for. The map is a great thing to see and they have a huge "El Trovatore" sign that lights up at night. It is also really close to the downtown area, so finding food is pretty easy. They also has a HUGE Route 66 road sign painted on the ground at the entrance. There are also numerous murals painted around that make for nice photo ops. It was quite when I stayed here. As far as dog area, there wasn't too much. A few dirt patches but there was a grass area across from us, so that is where I took my dog. This place is mom and pop owned, so there is no 24/7 service. If you leave early before the office opens, there is a key drop box. If you arrive after 10 or 11pm, you may have a hard time getting a hold of someone to check you in. However, you can always arrange it before hand. I don't think I would stay here every time I pass by Kingman, but I do think that everyone should stay here for the experience!! Authentic 40s motel with some cool paint on the outside and 4-5 movie posters in the room, does not make for cool. The room had a musty smell and the place was clean, but poorly maintained. Almost everything was original from the 40s, including the sink with chipping and peeling paint from a failed re-surfacing job in the past. The caulking on the fixtures is a really ratty job. Visit on 5/17/17: Wish I could have given this a higher rating. Out on the open stretch of 40, it has a lot of quaint charm. The combination of classic movies is great: we stayed in the Bugsy Siegel room with Porky Pig on the door and photos of Marlon Brando from "The Godfather" and the Rat Pack inside. Taco was fun to play with while checking in, and he knows a few tricks. My two problems with the hotel were the cleanliness. Walked in to find long blonde hairs in the bathroom sink and short brown hairs in the tub. Also, my dad had to work to get the Wi-Fi to work for him; it did not work at all for me. Although we stayed when it was packed-- we got the second to last room for that night, no theft problems. As I was in the process of moving, you'll see from my photo that anyone looking to break into cars would've picked mine. However, everything was intact when we left the next morning. read more

Must've been my tattoos lol!! Finally got out of Los Angeles for the weekend to do some hiking up in The Hualapais. Drove for a couple of hours and went to book my overnight stay while eating lunch in Lake Havasu. Deciding on whether to stay at Hampton Inn (using my Hilton Honors from travelling a lot) for one or two nights I instead (foolishly) decide to check out El Trovatore Motel because it was a mom-and-pop spot most likely hit by Covid, PLUS it's basically at the bottom of Mt. Hualapai. Not by a long distance by any means but still closer. Book the room through Travelocity, eat the rest of my food, and venture on. Finally get to Kingman about an hour and a half later and wouldn't you know that Mt. Hualapai is on fire so hiking is cancelled. That was a major bummer, but that is just the beginning of this fiasco. I pull in to El Trovatore Motel and there is a woman sweeping up dog food off of the front mat. I laugh and say "don't even worry about it, the birds will peck that up." She laughs as well and says "my husband is going to be so mad about the birds if they go to the bathroom on the front step." I say "Ahhh, don't worry, if he gets mad then blame it on me" - we have a short laugh then I go inside. I go to check in and the guy sitting behind the plastic anti-Covid protector window asks if he can help me. I say I have a reservation and give him my last name. Wasn't the most personable guy but I've dealt with worse - travelling in 30 plus states and 12 plus countries I've dealt with the snootiest of the snooty in major cities and the grumpiest of the grumpies in small town USA. He says annoyingly "Your card was declined. TWICE!" I'm completely confused but I know that Wells Fargo (LIKE USUAL) has put a hold on my debit card like they always do if God forbid I leave my house. Like they do all of the time, no matter how much I travel and how much I've told them how annoying and embarrassing that is. But they always give me the "it's for your own protection" lecture so hokey dokey - whatever. So there is a one-armed gentleman standing behind me (yes, you read that right) so I say "Go ahead man" while I go outside to deal with Wells Fargo, even though they let me eat and pump gas in Lake Havasu NOW they are declining my charge. So I call up Wells Fargo and of course that is what they did, so I verify my last 3 transactions and they lift the hold. I walk back in and the husband/owner is dealing with another older couple and giving them a big rundown of what to do in Kingman and Kingman's history which I find interesting - Universal Soldier (one of the worst 90s movies ever with Jean-Claude and Dolph) was shot here and Pamela Anderson was arrested here, etc. I find it interesting, even though the 70 year old couple can clearly care less. The owner is going on and on and the small dog inside the lounge is barking at me non-stop so I go outside to sit down while the owner is dealing with the other guests. I sit down and text my girlfriend about Universal Soldier and the cool theme that the motel portrays and that Wells Fargo has wasted my time again, and the couple walks out about 2 minutes later. NOW........... I walk back in and tell the guy that there is no issues with my card anymore and that I have used it twice earlier in the day and that it is good to go and if he can just run it again. He gruffs at me through his sweaty pony tailed head "DECLINED - TWICE!!!" and I say "yeah I know, but the bank lifted the hold and it's good to go so you can just run it manually". He repeats "IT GOT DECLINED - TWICE!!" I literally can't believe what's going on here, and now I'm not surprised that his wife is worried about the dog food that was spilled on the front mat. I've been to high end hotels in multiple countries and here stateside in Chicago, New York City, Vegas, New Orleans, etc you name it and I'm getting basically told to F&%k off in this run down cesspool of Kingman, Arizona. I work in customer service and run credit cards all night long and all week long at my job so I know it takes maybe 7 seconds at the most to run it a third time manually, and there is no one here anymore in this room and this guy has literally NOTHING to do. But he doesn't want to run the card. I would usually remind him that it was the bank putting a hold on the card and we're good to go, but as I look down at my debit card I see the tattoos on my fingers and then it dawns on me. There are about 300 tweakers and homeless bums roaming the streets of Kingman, and he must think that I am one of them because of the placement of my tattoos, and he obviously thinks that either I stole this debit card or that I don't have $80 to stay the night at his motel where I clearly want to tap my vein all night. I chuckle to myself and shake my head and even say to him and the lady sitting on the couch behind me "Ok, have a nice weekend". read more

Upon shaggy man on Route 66 we were greeted by the owner Sam who was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Since I had a trainer be allowed me to park in the light and set us with a groan to keep an eye on our trailer. The Room was old but did the job. Door frames looked like they were broken into several times, the floorboards were rotted and fallen apart combo that's were comfortable and they were all over always clean with the exception of some hair on the sheets. That 1 up clock in the morning a woman approached me saying he could not park where I was told in she was the owner was very rude. When I asked her what she was she was extremely upset and said she was going to talk to her husband. Few minutes later she came back and apologized and said her husband let her know he told me to park there. This is good and historic location that has not been kept up to good my overall fun read more

We stayed here on a month long road trip, so we had a lot to compare it to! Our room was the Marilyn Monroe room. Let's start with the GOOD: - Owner Samuel has a LOT of info. I mean a LOT! If you have time, get a history lesson from him, he'll be sure to impress with his extensive knowledge of the area. - Taco the dog is always happy to see you - They actually had Stevia in the room for morning coffee. I think the only place on the whole road trip that did! - Another feature we only got at this place was it was pretty dang sound proof! We didn;t hear anyone from the other rooms. - It was older, but it was clean. - Despite other reviewers comments about security, we felt completely safe. - Totally unique experience overall. We really liked the effort they put into it! What we DIDN'T like: - While the room was clean and cozy, the bathroom left a lot to be desired. The shower was a little too old school for us. It looked like a ancient cavernous hole that likely had not seen it's nooks and crannies cleaned out due to the age/design. - It is looking a little tired, but at the same time it kind of lends to it's charm. All in all, its a unique experience and it's nice to get out of the corporate chains and back to some mom and pop business once in a while. read more

Our stay at the El Trovatore was a highlight of our road trip to Texas. My seven year old was ecstatic at the prospect of being able to stay in his first ever motel. He questioned why we have stayed in hotels all these years when there are places with the amenity of a door directly to the outside world and adjacent parking. For him, the El Trovatore as his first motel set the bar high enough that I doubt he we be satisfied with any other motel much less the business class Hilton, Doubletree and Embassy Suites hotels he has been accustomed to over the years... At check in, we were greeted by Sam and Monica the owners. Things got off to a great start with tricks performed by their wonder dog, Taco. I think he is a chihuahua and he has to be as wide as he is long. The kids loved him. We visited with the owners for probably a half hour as they shared information about the town, it's history, Route 66 and the history of the hotel. They were genuine and great advocates for all there is to experience in the area. Monica even accompanied us to our room and showed us all of its amenities. They really provided the service of a 5 star hotel and the friendliness of a great B&B. The room was comfortable and spacious. The hotel has been around since the 1930's and many of the fixtures appeared to be original. They provided charm while key amenities like the AC unit were contemporary and worked great. My son has asked if our next road trip can be back to El Trovatore to stay longer... I would consider it. read more

Bring on the nostalgia and Americana! Stopped here for a night on my road trip. FYI - per my encounters, this is one of the only theme motels that uses hotel booking sites (hotels.com and booking.com) for reservations but they accept payment upon check in only. This is helpful if you are collecting rewards. Great photo opportunities outside. The owner was very nice and had a ton of information to offer about Kingman and its history. He also gave out a very cute Rt. 66 passport. I got to choose my room although some were already taken. I went with Audrey Hepburn. Not sure if you can call in advance and request a specific room but it's worth a shot. Obviously, don't expect luxury accommodations here. However, everything seemed clean albeit outdated. The door was a little flimsy which freaked me out a little bit as I was staying alone. Definitely a great slice of history and a very quintessential American road trip stop. read more

Well I was really excited to book a room here. I had read on a blog about a route 66 adventure and this was one of the stops. I called and left a message with my telephone number and that I wanted a king room and no return call - that was Tuesday it's Friday now I called again on Thursday left another message no return call I attempted to register via the website had a heckuva time did not work. When I called on Friday and actually got somebody to answer the phone she was too busy to book a reservation she got put off with me and got an attitude and told me that I could book through their website and then I didn't need to have PayPal they took credit cards or book through Expedia or one of those sites - basically go away paying customer don't want to talk to you If that's the level of customer service they offer, no thank you. John Wayne room Bed was comfortable although the room was clean on the surface , but not deep cleaned as it was dirty. There was no hot water... None . I could not get warm as there seemed to not be any heat and the excessive cold air funneled through the bathroom window that looked over a field of muck. The good parts... Price.. The painted decor outside was off the charts nice. The man cleaning rooms seemed like a nice man and Sam the owner was friendly enough, but too sick to wait on people. Two days later I got sick... Not only were local points of interest and anecdotes covered, helpful directions to the Grand Canyon were given when I indicated I was headed there. Not only did the owner and staff welcome me, their dog Taco excitedly performed a trick for me. This place was the perfect stop in our Grand Canyon road trip. We had the Paul Newman room...TCM was already on when we walked in playing an old Humphrey Bogart movie. Fun and unique, it added the right amount of kitsch to our adventure. Not only did we get to stay in the James Dean Styled room (James Dean being my favorite actor) but we also received a very informative history lesson from Sam the owner. He gave us info on the city, the motel and his own story of living the American dream. Very nice people. Has a mini fridge, a nice bed, no bugs, an old but working ac & hardwood floors - LOVED the floors. If your staying for more than a night there's a bbq. No bugs. . $66+tax/fees. Very interesting learning about the motel and Kingman's roll in the past, especially the WWII stuff. Super views of the mountains and you can hear the trains near by. If you need luxurious modern construction, look elsewhere. If you want to stay in a motel that has some history, look no further. The plumbing and wifi were both serviceable at best, the sheets could have been softer, but everything else was fine and it's a cool experience for a low price. This is a wonderful hotel. The owners are kind and funny and rather excited about the local history here. And the decor is delightful!! I wanted to stay here twice, once on my way from CA to AR and once on the way home. The first stay was delightful, and I was very excited to share the place with my wife on the way home. Our reservation was all in order, and it was "Pet Friendly", since we were taking Ginger back to CA with us this time, so we were all set. Until the night we arrived. Went to check in, found out, cats are EXTREMELY not welcomed, no exceptions, and we were sent away. My wife was nearly crying. We'd been hotel-ing with Ginger for the last several nights and all had been fine. Really this is a five star review except for this very, very unhappy experience. Dear El Trovatore, _please_ reconsider your "Pets OK" policy. I'm sure you had that one bad experience with a cat, either at your hotel or maybe in your life. But we travelers work hard with our pets. Would gladly lay down a deposit against damage, whatever it takes. P.S. We went to Red Roof Inn. So boring! Shoes just found a new Kingman favorite. Take your time here checking in. Get a wonderful history lesson from Sam & Monica. They have owned El Trovatore for 3 years now. So sit back and listen to stories of this historic motel and Kingman! They got the 100' sign tower working and have renovated most of the rooms. My room this nite was the John Wayne room. There are other Hollywood stars themed rooms. So after I checked in I was escorted to my room and given the tour of the Largest Route 66 wall mural map. the rooms are nice and clean and well done. The motel is very well priced. I have made new friends, Sam & Monica are dedicated to enriching Kingman with hospitality, charm and comfort. So, stay just a little bit longer. read more

The Decour was very entertaining and when I went into my room the TV was playing the movie Sandpiper, very nice touch. The rooms were on the smaller side however for the solo traveler this was perfect, And the rate for the night was great as well.
