First off we entered the building and there was no music playing. Very dull and boring in this establishment. Our table was cleaned with a broom. The service was okay. If you're expecting spicy salsa... be ready to use salt and pepper. On top of that I asked for a lemon in my drink and did not get it. But the cherry on top of my night was when I opened my taco... for starters the taco was a mess. But when I opened and saw no cheese... I saw what looked like jizz. Don't recommend. read more

Food, notably the chicken soup, is always hot and tasty. I appreciate that they don't add corn or worse, pieces of corn on the cob, like some places do. What's the point of that? Are you supposed to fish it out of the soup and eat it with your fingers? Good grief! Service is friendly and professional and everyone (customers and staff) seem to be having a decent time. I'm new to Locust so I wanted to check out the Mexican spot. The staff was welcoming and service was quick. I got the coco loco margarita and let me tell you... if you love margaritas and pina colatas, this is your drink. It was really good and not too sweet. I got the chicken tacos and really didn't expect too much excitement but even that I was impressed with. The meat was really well seasoned. They give you just the chicken and the tortilla with all the toppings on the side so it doesn't look like much but it's very flavorful. We used to eat at El Vaquero at least once a week before COVID, and we got out of the habit. The food is about like other Mexican restaurants, a huge menu that seems to all taste the same. But it's a great taste. I like the chicken soup and the pollo crema, the fajitas are a favorite. But the food isn't really the point. The people who run it are just the best. When my father died ten years ago the manager was so empathetic I still think of it. Aside from that, the wait staff and others are always professional and willing to accommodate dietary requests. We have eaten here several times and the food is always great, but I especially noticed this time how the employees HUSTLE in this place! Even on Valentine's night, even though they were very busy, the wait wasn't incredibly long. They don't waste any time getting your chips, salsa and drinks to your table, and same with your entree once ordered. I had the chicken enchiladas verdes, my husband had cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. We both ate the queso dip, which is delicious! Delicious Mexican food! The best part of this restaurant is the super attentive staff that treat you like you're guests in their own home. Instead of having 1 server we had the whole house staff take care of us and it was a great dining experiences. I ordered the combo fajitas and my husband got the steak quesadillas. They always make sure our order is right, ready when they say it will be, and they're really attentive when we eat there. The staff is always friendly and smiling when we come and go. I absolutely love this place. Chips are great - salsa is alright. The shrimp tacos are amazing. The shrimp are big and are cooked perfectly. Since coming here, having shrimp anywhere else in the area (even fancier joints in Charlotte with one exception) has been a disappointment. The shrimp tacos come with Mexican rice and refried beans - both of which are incredible. Everyone that works there is so friendly and nice. Although the food was very good I am only giving them one stars because of the fact that they are not enforcing their staff to wear a mask when carrying food to the table. That is why I feel like this place is part of the problem when it comes to stopping the spread of Covid. When she brought the chips to our table I said to her that is not how you properly wear a mask and her reply was it's too hard to wear a mask. We don't have another Mexican restaurant in the area but I do frequent here more than I should. One time stands out to me. I am a freight broker and absolutely rely on having cell phone service when I'm off the clock. There is no service there for me but I asked for the wifi and they hand delivered the wifi and password on a napkin to me. They don't usually let patrons connect but I was so impressed they did that for me. I love the steak burrito. Service is always amazing. I just love this place. Margaritas are always strong. At the behest of my coworkers i returned to this restaurant. I decided i would give it one more try since my friends love this place. I ordered the seafood chimi. This has always been one of my favorite dishes but many places don't have it. I was excited because i haven't had one since my favorite Mexican restaurant back in Wilmington. I was amazed when my food arrived. It was beautiful! Now THIS is how a seafood chimichanga is supposed to look. I took my first bite and i was in love. It was perfect! The service today was good, as well. Our waiter was very personable and helpful. A complete contrast to my last visit. They were almost overly helpful, even bringing out two sets of drinks. I am not ashamed to admit that i may have been a bit hasty with my first review, although it really was a bad experience. I'm glad i gave them another chance and i can't wait to return. Portions small for being a Mexican restaurant. Not really authentic. It's cheap, but I've gotten better for the same price. I would never come back nor would I recommend it to anyone. Wow!!! What a delicious find!!!! I'm extremely picky when it comes to Mexican food and this place was super affordable and even more flavorful. El Vaquero = Authentic Mexican and better than 95% of "Mexican" restaurants in Charlotte. As an added bonus, the wait staff is very, very friendly, gracious, and nice. We came 10 minutes before close and still received outstanding service. The chips and salsa were complimentary like most places but tasted fresh. We loved our drinks, too (Michelada and Margarita). We might have to come to Locust more often. All of the waiters were awesome but if you can ask for Moisés. He'll take great care of you! read more
