I came here last night with a group of my coworkers for dinner. I had heard many great things about this restaurant, but I was extremely disappointed in the quality of the food and service that we received tonight. To start, we were a group of about 10 people and asked to split the checks individually, since this dinner was a business expense that had to be paid for individually. I understand that this was difficult to do and they were not able to accommodate us, but the way that we were treated after asking, was not okay. The server did not respond to this request in a professional manner; instead, she had a terrible attitude the entire night and acted annoyed with us, and as if we were inconveniencing her in some way. Aside from the horrendous service, the food arrived cold. Not only was my food barely lukewarm, the rest of my table received lukewarm food as well. My steak was cold and full of gristle and inedible pieces, and was not seasoned well. The asparagus on my plate was just straight up cold, and the mashed potatoes were just okay. For such a nice restaurant, I expected better. I expected to receive somewhat hot food. Some of my party was also not satisfied with their lukewarm meals. After we received our food, we were not checked on at all by the servers to make sure everything was okay. Also, one of my coworkers actually had an entire beer spilled on her by one of the servers, which I understand was an honest mistake; however, the server said that her meal would be comped, but it still ended up still being on her bill. They did end up removing it after somebody spoke up, but they should have taken it off like they said they would have from the start. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. The service and ambiance here were great, and the cocktails are very good. If I was rating this place on these factors alone, I'd give it 5 stars. However, we also had dinner here, and for the price, the food was disappointing. To be fair, there were some standouts- the Brussels sprouts for the table were delicious, and the rolls from Bread Savage were good as well, and I would order them again. The entrees were, as a whole, a letdown. They weren't bad, per se, but they didn't sing, either. The Ragu was flavorful, but the pasta was overcooked to the point of being mushy, so the texture was off. The chickpea bhuna also had soggy rice, and a bland flavor overall. Both the filet and pork-chop came with a very over salted sauce, and the salmon on my salad was overcooked and salty as well. Everything was edible, but at this price point, I'd expect something a little more carefully crafted. I will definitely be back, but only for the cocktails, and maybe an appetizer. read more

We haven't gone away or out for that matter in almost a year due to COVID restrictions. Going to wedding in Three Rivers seems as crazy as wining and dining right now, but here we are and we are going big or going home. We are staying at The Darling Hotel, so it made sense to want to support the rooftop restaurant, Elderwood. The only reservation time was 4:30 PM, so we considered a really late lunch as opposed to an early dinner. We started with a Dirty Martini, not quite dirty enough for me, and Einstok White Ale on tap. To accompany our cocktails, we indulged in Sugar Cured Pork Belly and the Spicy Shrimp. both were excellent. Next up: A nice bottle of Rombauer Zinfandel, one of our favorite wines from our favorite vineyards. Between us, we shared Seafood Pasta and Seared Scallops with Butternut Squash Risotto. The seafood pasta had a nice variety of shrimp, mussels, and spanish chorizo, but it lacked flavor. The pasta was dry, simply needed a bit of a sauce in our opinion. The scollops were delicious, as was the risotto. Creme Brûlée with fresh berries was delicious. Our server was excellent, attentive and fun. She frequented our table just enough, always being sure our glasses were full or cocktails were on the way. Which leads us to the last part of our visit... after dinner drinks. Heck, by this time it is only 6pm. We decided to have the Oaxcan Old Fashioned and The Dorian Grey... times 2. Don't judge, this is what happens when you have been in captivity for a year. We were visiting Visalia from out of town for a wedding and we were highly recommended this place. Side note, if you visit please note it's inside a hotel (super cool hotel). It has a nice view of the city via the rooftop. We were quickly sat and thankfully by the heater. Staff was super nice and the menu is pretty simple. You can see in the pics what we ordered and I will say the chilaquiles was my least favorite. I later realized the waiter didn't ask how I wanted my meat but it was too well done for my liking. We're happy we made the stop! Located atop a landmark building oozing charm, the restaurant has two beautiful rooftop terraces. We were there on a Wednesday evening and they were already quite busy (we luckily made reservations ahead of time) so I can only imagine how packed they must be in Summer. The staff were friendly and set-up a heating lamp nearby for us. The ambiance is so nice, particularly the views of the Sierras. The menu may not be large, but what they offer is prepared and presented very well. We ordered the Seafood Pasta, Seared Chicken, and the Butternut Squash Risotto (with chicken.) Everything was just delicious. If I lived in the area this would definitely be a place I'd return to. read more

This place is perfect for a special brunch date! Part of The Darling Hotel, Elderwood is a cute little rooftop restaurant with beautiful aesthetics and yummy food. Reservations are definitely recommended to ensure you get a table, and be sure to get there early in case they make room for people waiting. You can make a reservation easily on their website. Once you enter the hotel, just let them know you are there for Elderwood amd they will direct you upstairs. The decorations and ambience is very nice. I would say it is a mix of modern and Gatsby stule. Some people were dressed a little casual but you can also dress it up as well (especially for the pics ;)). Everything was super clean too. The view from the roof is great and there are giant umbrellas that can be moved to provide some shade. Service was very friendly. Our waiter was very nice and enthusiastic, definitely matched with our brunch happy/fun vibes. He checked in often and made sure we were having a good time. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but the food is very yummy! Their French Toast was definitely worth adding as a sweet tooth dish for us. They have mimosas flights and while all the flavors were good, our favorite was the one with guava (pink colored). My husband had a lovely brunch date. Staff were really nice and the environment was pretty chill. We had reservations but had to wait almost 20 mins before we got seated. When we got to the top, it wasn't packed so I'm not sure why we had to wait so long if we had reservations. Our server seemed shy when greeting us and taking our orders. She didn't give us their special of the day or any recommendations at first. Since it was our first time, I asked what's popular and she said everything was... which didn't help in selecting my entree. After we made our decision, it didn't take long for our food to come out. My husband's chili verde was hot but my eggs benedict was just warm... so, I don't know if they make certain foods in advance and it sits or they made mine first and had it just sitting while they made my husbands. I tried this lovely roof top restaurant for the first time. It is a rooftop restaurant located on the roof of The Darling hotel. I had never been here before so I truly enjoyed the atmosphere and the view. The weather was great which was a bonus. I had previously looked at their Yelp reviews to see what the food looked like and what food was available. A lot of the food that appears in there yelp account is no longer available as they came out with a new menu so I feel like their wasn't much food options. I did end up ordering the chilaquiles which were really good and surprisingly a very decent portion. The presentation was also definitely nice. After 2 days of camping and eating only steak and eggs I arrived to the darling STARVED. I asked the waitress to tell me everything she loved on the menu and I ordered it. I started with the Daisy Buchanan cocktail (times two), I had the shrimp pasta, and creme brûlée. The cocktail was incredible, I ended up trying a different one for my third. The pasta was made in house and you can tell. The sauce is perfection. My only criticism is that they don't really serve you a lot of it, especially for the price. The flavor was so good, however, I'd order it again. I definitely left still kinda hungry. The reason I knocked a star is that they "ran out of spoons" when I ordered the creme brûlée so they gave me a fork which is probably the hardest utensil to use for creme brûlée. When I asked again if a spoon became available I was told to use my finger. Normally, that'd be funny, but if you're bougie enough to charge $26 for a small bowl of pasta and $15 for a cocktail, you can serve me with a spoon. Otherwise, incredible experience! read more

I had both dinner and brunch at Elderwood during my 1-night stay in Visalia while visiting the Sequoias. I was expecting some amazing food given the prices and the ambiance they were going for, but I had a pretty mediocre experience overall. For dinner, I ordered the mahi mahi with cheese ravioli... a very interesting combination. I sort of got the sense that the chefs just wanted to put together some strange combinations for the shock factory with this one. I thought I'd give it a shot because I like ravioli and mahi mahi, but the fish and cheese ravioli definitely didn't go together. The fish also seemed over cooked. Service was pretty fast, but ambiance was weird and quiet for dinner and my friends and I felt like we had to whisper. For brunch, I had the croissant French toast, which was delicious! The waiter was also very friendly and chatted with us about our trip for a while. Service took a lot longer with this meal as well. Overall, I'd say this was a three star experience. My experience at the Elderwood was absolutely exceptional! For drinks, I got the Darling and the strawberry lemon drop. Both were absolutely refreshing and delicious! 10/10 would recommend. For an appetizer, I got the spicy tuna which was absolutely mind blowing, it completely stole the show! It is flavorful with a hint of spice that makes you want to go back for more. 10/10 would recommend. For the entree, I got the salmon which literally melted in my mouth. It was so flavorful and paired very well with the asparagus and rice. 10/10 would recommend. Last but not least, for dessert we got the crème brûlée. The crème brûlée was quite light and refreshing with the fruits it's paired with, and wasn't too sweet. 7/10 would recommend. The waiter and hostesses were very attentive and helpful when making recommendations on the menu. In addition, they were super accommodating when we asked to be sat near the fire pit and heater as it was a bit chilly on the rooftop. What a gem of a place. Located on the top floor of the boutique Darling Hotel in downtown Visalia (a visual treat in itself, totally redone Art Deco), this restaurant/bar offers 2 separate patios with views of the surrounding areas and, on a clear day, the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountain range. We were only here for drinks. Very talented mixologist provides standards as well as house specialty cocktails with the freshest ingredients. I can see this place getting packed during happy hour, as it is a little small inside, but plenty of room on the 2 patios. Looking forward to checking out the fare here on our next visit to town. Did my usual yelp search to find a good breakfast spot and came across Elderwood so I decided to give it a try. It is a rooftop restaurant located on top of a boutique hotel that has outdoor seating with views located on the east and west side of the building. There is a bar between the two outdoor areas with seating and they also have a few tables inside as well. I did not have any reservations (I went on a Sunday morning) but was able to get a table inside by the bar. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant was great. I ordered the avocado toast southwestern, smashed rosemary fingerling potatoes and the three rivers mimosa trio. Everything was excellent, food, drinks and service. Will I go back again? Absolutely! Last time we were there was a busy night but despite of it service was quick and waitress was very nice and bubbly, she made suggestions that were on point.
