We ordered the lamb it was amazing, came with delicous bean, soup, salad, vegis and bread. The appateizer of escargot was fair. I wouldn't order it again. The dinning room was dark quite and intamite, perfect for a date. The first waitress we had when we were seated was not very friendly and I asked her to kindly let me know what brand of bourbon they used in my old fashion she acted annoyed and did not get my answer. I've heard a lot about this place over the years and have been wanting to try it out to see if the steaks are as great as people say they are. They were NOT one of us got a steak and they're was a lot of fat on it, the pasta tasted like gross fishy seawater, the lobster was good but not worth the price of $60 and the soup and salad were very underwhelming. The older waitress lady working the bar area was very welcoming and cheery but the chunky Armenian waitress was so rude and lacked any people skills. I was really excited about going to this Portuguese steak house but, I was very disappointed in the end. It was a busy Saturday and we had to wait and that was fine, it was only like 45 minutes. The waitress was Not friendly and then almost seemed bothered to take our order. We were a party of (7) 3 adults 3 young teenagers and a baby. We had a New York steak, chicken Marsala, linguica plate , Bull cheeseburger and I had the Steak De Lisboa. The bill was over 200$. They were "out" of multiple things from the menu and they up-charge if you ask for anything extra like drink refills which is fine, we don't mind paying $ for good food. Unfortunately, the consensus from everyone at the table was that their food was very under seasoned and bland. Had a truly great experience here. We had a gift card for this restaurant and decided to swing by. We made reservations the same day and to my understanding they greatly appreciate reservations. Then we had a salad I recommend the ranch as it is a homemade ranch. Looks very small from outside, but once inside not too bad. Nice cozy romantic candle-lid dinner type of setting - Hence, a bit on the dark dimmish setting kind of environment. Wish our waitress could be a bit more friendlier and more acknowledging considering we were kind and didn't ask much from her other than very few things like "more bread please." But she just walked away as if didn't hear our request. When we were done and paid our bill, she just gave us our receipt and AGAIN walked away. The service wasn't that great. The waitress didn't seem like she was happy to be there. They served us soup and we had to wait 10 minutes for the spoon. She seemed bothered when we asked for the spoon. Their oyster Rockefeller was topped with cheddar cheese, when I mentioned that to the waitress she stated that the menu said it has cheese. We had some appetizers there and also took food to go. The escargot is melt in mouth tender served with toasted soft bread and real butter. The frog legs are cooked perfectly as well and a very nice light breading maybe some cornmeal with white flower? Our family also enjoyed the beef tips stroganoff. We were driving by and needed some comfort food. We have always heard good things so we decided to try Elegant Bull. One lone server was working but seated us as soon as she saw us. Gracious lady. The tables are set elegantly with faux flowers, cloth napkins and candlelight. There was not too many people in the front room but later I saw there is also a banquet area and a bar area in the back. She told us the specials and gave us the menus. There were so many options. Since this is a Portuguese family restaurant, you will not leave hungry: most meals come with soup, bread, salad, Portuguese beans, veggies and a starch .... All with your main entree. As much as I love eating, I can't eat a lot. I get full really fast. With all the pre courses, I was hoping to have enough room to eat some of my entree. I selected ribs and I was upsold to a whole rack for $7 more. I knew I wouldn't eat it all but I knew my kids would eat them tomorrow. In hindsight, that was not a good idea since I've never had their ribs, but more on that later. My husband chose the meatloaf, but she came back right after and said they were sold out so he got Beef Stroganoff (remember we were there for comfort food). The first thing that comes out is the soup. It's homemade with veggies, chicken and some kind of flat wide noodle. Very good soup and it would be great to have if I was not feeling well. It has that kind of homemade, mom loves me vibe. It came with huge homemade rolls. Still warm. I love bread and I could come back just for warm bread and butter. Next comes your salad. I expected a tiny salad but it was a decent size. Simple salad of Iceberg, tomato, croutons, but there were so many dressings they make in house. I got blue cheese which was good but my husband's choice was better: garlic ranch. I'm getting that next time. Next comes out your entrée, which has your starch, veggies and entrée on one plate... if it all fits (See my picture). A small bowl of Portuguese beans comes on the side. I was glad I upgraded. The ribs were good, not the best I ever had, but definitely good. Not overcooked, not undercooked. Good flavor. For my starch, I selected a sweet potato. And I got a very huge sweet potato to go with my huge rack of ribs. I had a little bit of room for my veggies which were seasoned nicely. I ate about five ribs, which was astonishing honestly since I ate all the pre courses. I had one spoonful of Portuguese beans, because my husband ate the rest of them. They had a very smoky chili flavor, but don't think sweet beans. They were definitely different than other Portuguese beans I've had. My husband loved them. My husband thought he was gonna be funny and look at the dessert menu, which was a huge mistake because with an amazing amount of desserts, but we knew we couldn't eat anything more. This was a great experience for a great price. The location is not much to look at on the outside, but the food, service, and warm atmosphere inside will keep us coming back often in the future. read more

Based on my experience at this restaurant I will never be a customer there again. It was New Years eve which I am aware it's a busy night, however I thought I would stop by with my 4 year old boy to see if we can either grab a quick bite or possibly order take out? We were on our way home and did not want to drive out of town due to the rain and road conditions. When I walked in the restaurant I was asked if I was meeting someone? Which I said No, that I just wanted to see if my child and I can dine in or was it only reservations? The gal asked me to give her a second that she was going to see if she was able to squeeze me in. Which sounded promising. However, the gal never returned and after sitting there and watching their regulars get seated, I went up to ask another employee if I was going to be able to dine in? Or can I order to go? The employees acted like they did not know who I spoke to and said they were super busy and even take out would take a long time. What I don't appreciate is the run around I was given. It was quite simple they could have said no from the beginning, instead of having me sit there, knowing they only cater to there regulars. My father had been coming to this restaurant for years and after he shared how wonderful it was, and I was now living in Oakdale I decided it was time to give them a try. We were greeted and seated immediately. We were really disappointed by how the kitchen is open to the dining area. As we were in the middle of eating, one of the cooks began shouting at someone that was in the kitchen with him. This went on for at least twenty minutes. A real mood killer. I should mention that the appearance of this chief was less than appealing! He looked like he was straight out of prison! Harsh... but I'm only being honest. Greasy hair and he just looked nasty! The food was disgusting! And I don't use that word often. We could hardly eat any of our meal. Thank goodness our waitress was on point with her service. I was so blown away at how horrible the food was that I finally asked the young man that was refilling our water if the restaurant had changed owners? And just as I had figured it had! The price of this awful food was it for us! I'm not even sure why we did refuse the bill or at least complain on spot other than for the fact we just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible! The prime rib was over cooked and seemed as if they reheated their leftovers for the night before. The horse radish was beyond gross as if was not refrigerated and had spoiled. Merced County has a few GREAT steakhouses and I would put the Elegant Bull in that category! Yes, it is a little "hole in the wall" but once inside, you are transported back in time with Frank Sinatra-era music flowing throughout elegant table presentations, full courses, and attentive servers. This is my third time eating there and it did not disappoint. I had the tasty 6 oz fillet medallions which were so tender and the red wine mushroom sauce was incredible. OMG! The food was amazing. I had 18 oz Bone in Ribeye. My wife had the Halibut. Both were cooked perfectly, and tasted great. Dinners come with Soup, Salad, Bread, Portuguese Beans, choice of starch, and Vegetables along with your protein. I usually never write negative reviews, however, my experience was negative from beginning to end. First, we walk in with reservations at 6pm. We are waived down at 6:15, yes, waived and not approached. Once seated, the place was hot and the seating as uncomfortable. You cannot have a conversation without everyone hearing. The people who were seated next to us had their candle start a small table fire. Chaos as all patrons used their glasses of water to put the fire out. When we ordered, the food took 1.15 hrs to arrive. During that time, the waitress told us the food was coming twice. We never got a refill on our sodas. Once food arrived, my Mahi Mahi was not cooked well. It was raw and the French fries were soggy. My friends filet mignon was burnt. He asked for it medium well, not burnt. We told the waitress about this and she said the cook was stupid. Very unprofessional. She gave us a slice of cake, which besides the water, was the only good thing. Our bill was $200 for 4 people. This staple of a restaurant has been here for over 20+ years. It's a holebin the wall place but it deserves your company. It's has a really weird layout. There are multiple rooms to dine in, and there are all draped with white tablecloths and attend with servers all in black. We asked to sit in the bar as we did not have a reservation. The bar area was super small, but "Misty" was spot on! She greeted us immediately, walking in and said we could sit where we like. As we looked over the menu, Misty got us our drinks. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered a hot bread loaf as an app (DELICIOUS). All entries come with soup, salad and Bread. One of my quest ordered the fish n chips (people rant and rave about) they were decent, not great but not bad. The Ribeye had great flavor and was cooked perfectly, baked potato seemed as it has been there quite awhile, not very fresh or good, Veggies on all plates were ok, nothing spectacular or flavorful, Salad was served cold ( Great) soup was hot and tasty.
