Finally got to try them. Unfortunately no malasadas until 1.5 hr later. Was given the option to pre-order. Apparently you can call to preorder too ? Got the tarts and wow very flaky !! The lamination and butter was spot on. The filling was just a touch too sweet for us. Had the original and the apple cinnamon. Didn't except the apple to be a fave, but it was. Even the malasadas were underwhelming and if you think they are similar to Leonard's, then this does not come close. For the Portuguese tarts, they were served a bit cold. I'd recommend reheating them. The crust was so oily it seeped through the napkin and the filling was overly sweet. I took one bite and couldn't finish it. Overall, the texture and flavor didn't meet expectations. Service was decent but the staff were not friendly. This was a bit of a letdown. I tried their plain Portuguese egg tart and the chocolate one--both of which were good and some of the best egg tarts I've had. The first time I tried Pastelaria Ageda's Pastel De Nata was when the first blow-up on social media and there were a line in front of their door. My family got me their original Portuguese Egg Tart, Ham & Cheese Croissant, and Chourico Bread to-go. The croissant and the bread were too buttery for my taste, I love buttery flaky pastries in general but these were too much to handle, like they basically soaked in butter, I cannot even taste the flavor of the ham or the sliced linguica sausage. But the egg tart was good, the shell were flaky and rich in butter, meanwhile the egg custard filling have a nice fragrant smell of egg & milk with soft jelly-like texture. So this time when I was around downtown SJ, I decided to stop by to get myself an egg tart, as a quick tasty snack on the go. The lovely lady behind the counter helped me get the good and check out all under 3 minutes. The store ambience were bright and have a lovely cyan/blue color theme, I feel calm and relax when I enter the door. But this time, the egg tart didn't taste as good as I remembered. Funny thing is, I thought when I bought it in store, the egg tart supposed to be fresher and tastier in compare with my to-go experience. Likes... it was still that same egg tart but somehow the flavors and texture decreased 20-30%. As I couldn't get there before the afternoon, we placed an order in advance which was a great move considering they were out of most flavors by then if I had just walked in to try some. The Pasteis de Nata were all good in the sense that they were flaky, creamy (not eggy), and not overly sweet. I was most excited to try the passionfruit one but I will say it tasted pretty much like the traditional with passionfruit seeds on top. There must have been the slightest hint of passionfruit, if at all. The flavor needs to be way more pronounced. The hazelnut was one of my favorites; the cream inside was delicious and it honestly didn't need the sprinkles on top. Both blueberry & strawberry were also well done and added a nice tart flavor to each bite. Sadly, mine was not served in their pretty boxes; apparently they charge ~$3 for that now. I thought this place was overrated initially, and because of this didn't quite give it the chance I should've when it came around to trying it. My friend recently got me a box as a gift though... and woah I was completely wrong! The egg tarts here are SO good. I've wanted to go to Adega for the longest time, and I still haven't, and since they've reopened, that's definitely a goal of mine. In the meantime, they've opened a pastelaria, and I'm glad I walked in as I was on the way home from another bakery because this place is tremendous. Upon entry I was greeted by so many delicious-looking malasadas, and the best part was there was a deal on them if you bought more than four. I got the cookies and cream (it was fine), coconut (the best), Dulce de leche (a little dense), and sweet egg cream (also delicious). It definitely tasted like Leonard's Hawaii without the more tropical options so I'll be back for these. He also got like the biggest chocolate croissant I've ever seen for $8. There's plenty of sprinkles so it gets messy on that regard, but I wish there was more chocolate in it. This place has been on my list for awhile but I generally avoid downtown because I hate crowds, traffic, and lack of parking. We wound up parking in a lot maybe two blocks away, not too bad.
