Maybe it was an off day for them, but these pateis de nata tasted nothing like other Portuguese egg tarts we've had. We ordered a dozen -- 6 original and then one of each of their special flavors (mango, ube, passionfruit, guava, blueberry, and lemon). They were still warm and smelled delicious, but that's about where it ends. The crust is the best part. Flaky and crunchy. But the "custard" for every single one was more like pastry cream, barely any egg flavor and overly sweet. Like, almost sickly sweet where everyone could only eat half of a tart before declaring they were done and then needed an entire glass of water to wash it down. Even the appearance was pale and barely yellow, and the consistency was... gel-like? Definitely not a custard. So disappointed because I heard so many great things about Adega, and I was genuinely excited to finally be able to try it. I have not been here for a year since I had to cut back on my sweet. They must have a new owner or baker because these crème fillings were tasteless and not creamy like they used to be. Finally got to try them. Unfortunately no malasadas until 1.5 hr later. Was given the option to pre-order. Apparently you can call to preorder too ? Got the tarts and wow very flaky !! The lamination and butter was spot on. The filling was just a touch too sweet for us. Had the original and the apple cinnamon. Didn't except the apple to be a fave, but it was. Think of an elevated apple pie or even an elevated McDonald's apple pie. Don't skip out, try it ! Also had the coconut brioche, very light but not much coconut flavor. The pastéis de nata doesn't really taste like the authentic ones you get in Portugal. While I was traveling to Lisbon, I've visited Pastéis de Belém which is a legendary shop that sells these. The pastéis de nata was created by the monks in order to survive after the monastery was dissolved. That same recipe is still being used at that shop to this very day. Although I wasn't expecting a replica of the original, I did expect it to capture the core characteristics of a Portuguese egg tart. That said being said, I think the crust isn't bad but the texture of the custard more like a gel than a custard. Also I couldn't really taste any custard flavor. read more

Wow! What an absolutely disappointment. As a Portuguese person, I grew up on Pastel de Nata or what we call from our island Cajada de Nata. I was SOOOO sad and disappointed just by the appearance of them when arriving, they were all burnt! You can't tell me they are supposed to look like this because nowhere on their website or instagram to they advertise them with black tops. I purchase Pastel de Nata quite frequently from my local bakery in San Leandro and since we were finally in San Jose, I was SO excited at the opportunity to try new ones from this "popular bakery" and I'm confused on how these sell? I ordered 13 pastel de Nata (6 traditional & the remaining a mix of all the flavors they offer) I'd hope when packing my boxes they'd attempt to throw some in there that weren't burnt from the top but the pictures speak for themselves. The burnt top ruins the taste of the pastry itself. The filling to crust ratio isn't it. Needs more custard or a slightly thinner crust. Attaching photos for reference. We also arrived at 11am (1.5 hours after they opened) and there was literally only 1 malasada left, I'm so happy it happened to be dulce de leche which I wanted and purchased it. My husband, son, and I LOVED it! That's the reason for the 1 star (although I can't give less) I'd recommend they make more Malasadas and less Pastel de Nata to keep up with the demand, a couple families walked in after me and walked right out when they realized there weren't any in stock and they genuinely taste better then the Pastel de Nata, you can tell that's where the high ratings come from and why they are popular. Even the malasadas were underwhelming and if you think they are similar to Leonard's, then this does not come close. For the Portuguese tarts, they were served a bit cold. I'd recommend reheating them. The crust was so oily it seeped through the napkin and the filling was overly sweet. I took one bite and couldn't finish it. Overall, the texture and flavor didn't meet expectations. Service was decent but the staff were not friendly. This was a bit of a letdown. The first time I tried Pastelaria Ageda's Pastel De Nata was when the first blow-up on social media and there were a line in front of their door. My family got me their original Portuguese Egg Tart, Ham & Cheese Croissant, and Chourico Bread to-go. The croissant and the bread were too buttery for my taste, I love buttery flaky pastries in general but these were too much to handle, like they basically soaked in butter, I cannot even taste the flavor of the ham or the sliced linguica sausage. But the egg tart was good, the shell were flaky and rich in butter, meanwhile the egg custard filling have a nice fragrant smell of egg & milk with soft jelly-like texture. So this time when I was around downtown SJ, I decided to stop by to get myself an egg tart, as a quick tasty snack on the go. The lovely lady behind the counter helped me get the good and check out all under 3 minutes. The store ambience were bright and have a lovely cyan/blue color theme, I feel calm and relax when I enter the door. But this time, the egg tart didn't taste as good as I remembered. Funny thing is, I thought when I bought it in store, the egg tart supposed to be fresher and tastier in compare with my to-go experience. Likes... it was still that same egg tart but somehow the flavors and texture decreased 20-30%. Went on a Sunday 10 minutes before they opened and there was already a line forming outside. So safe to say this place does get busy--so do come early or preorder. It is a small shop with a few tables to sit at. The display of all of the tarts was presented nicely and clearly labeled. As I couldn't get there before the afternoon, we placed an order in advance which was a great move considering they were out of most flavors by then if I had just walked in to try some. The Pasteis de Nata were all good in the sense that they were flaky, creamy (not eggy), and not overly sweet. I was most excited to try the passionfruit one but I will say it tasted pretty much like the traditional with passionfruit seeds on top. There must have been the slightest hint of passionfruit, if at all. The flavor needs to be way more pronounced. The hazelnut was one of my favorites; the cream inside was delicious and it honestly didn't need the sprinkles on top. Both blueberry & strawberry were also well done and added a nice tart flavor to each bite. Sadly, mine was not served in their pretty boxes; apparently they charge ~$3 for that now. I first heard about Pastelaria Adega through social media, and after seeing so many delicious-looking pastries, I had to stop in and see what all the hype was about. I ordered a set of 12 pastel de nata and 6 malassadas to split with my team. I selected the lemon and the chocolate hazelnut. The crust of the Portuguese egg tarts is so amazing! I love making custard and think I could attempt to replicate this at home, but the flaky crust is what I would struggle with replicating for sure. The lemon helped temper the sugary goodness of the egg tart, while the creamy hazelnut spread added another texture in the mix for my egg tart. The malassadas were just alright, they were very doughy and a bit tiring to eat since they lacked a more nuanced flavor (what with the sweetness of the malassada bread and the filling). I thought this place was overrated initially, and because of this didn't quite give it the chance I should've when it came around to trying it. My friend recently got me a box as a gift though... and woah I was completely wrong! The egg tarts here are SO good. In the meantime, they've opened a pastelaria, and I'm glad I walked in as I was on the way home from another bakery because this place is tremendous. Upon entry I was greeted by so many delicious-looking malasadas, and the best part was there was a deal on them if you bought more than four. I got the cookies and cream (it was fine), coconut (the best), Dulce de leche (a little dense), and sweet egg cream (also delicious). It definitely tasted like Leonard's Hawaii without the more tropical options so I'll be back for these. He also got like the biggest chocolate croissant I've ever seen for $8. There's plenty of sprinkles so it gets messy on that regard, but I wish there was more chocolate in it.
