I really enjoyed this little bakery. Run by a sweet Portuguese couple, they were great to us. She even complimented me on my ability to pronounce the baked goods and talked to us about Portugal, as she learned we had visited in the not-so-far past. We got Pasteis de Nata, and they were solid. The texture was just spot on. Were they a Pasteis de Belem or Manteigaria level pasteis? I'd probably put these a tier below, but they were quite delicious! They had a little taste at the end that was different from those two Lisbon powerhouses, I think it was a bit of vanilla/sweetness. They were quite good, and I wouldn't hesitate to order again when feeling a need for those delicious Portuguese treats. We also got Portuguese sweet breads, and I ate those up. They were great! I really enjoyed this little bakery, and I'll definitely be back. They also accept credit card, which is nice.

Located in an area known as Little Portugal is this small bakery shop been in business for 37 years and run by an elderly Portuguese couple so polite and attentive been here a few times always greeted wlth a friendly smile and would sample a few treats a nice gesture. Their Portuguese sweet breads are a real winner along with pastel del nata or commonly known as egg tarts for a $1.50 and meringue cookies for .60 cents only wished they extend their hours longer and they are closed on Monday and Sunday. They do have a customer parking on the right side and in the back lot. Definitely my go-to for freshly baked Portuguese bread, rolls and custard tarts.

I was super excited to try Popular Bakery as they have limited hours from 7am-2pm Tue-Sat. I purchased a few Queijadas (tarts made of egg, milk, and sugar) also known as Pateis de Nata (custard tarts) for $2.50 each. I took the treats home and popped them in the oven for a few minutes and ohhhh my kitchen was smelling fragrant of cinnamon and coconut! The pastries were very sweet but the custard texture was nice and buttery smooth which I liked. If you're in the area and want to give these pastries a try I recommend the coconut queijada (I love anything with coconut!) There is limited parking available behind the bakery otherwise you'll need to find street parking nearby.

I've been here multiple times, the bread is always fresh, the employees are kind and easy to talk to. It's a small family shop, not a place to stay and hangout but perfect for dropping by and getting fresh baked Portuguese goods. I'll always return!

This place makes the best Portuguese pastries, whenever I'm in the San Jose area I have to stop by and pick some up.

Popular Bakery - Pasteis de nata y queijadas

Went deep into San Jose and decided to check out this place with supposedly the best portuguese baked goods in the Bay Area... and it was okay (but I'm no Portugese dessert expert). Their location doesn't stand out - if I weren't looking for this place, I totally could miss it even if I drove down Alum Rock 30 times. Popular Bakery is a very modest store - once you walk in, you are surrounded by Portuguese breads to your front and right. To the left is the bakery case with all the cookies and pastries. I decided to try the pasteis de nata (custard tart) and several queijadas (tiny tarts) in the various flavors. The queijadas were all moist and flavorful. I didn't expect the custard tart to be lemon flavored - maybe because I'm used to the custard tarts and Portuguese custard tarts you buy at a Chinese bakery. The one from Popular was good too but think I prefer the Chinese style ones. Bottom line: The stuff at Popular Bakery tasted good overall but none of it made me say "wow, I'm coming back to buy a dozen more". However, I'm no Portuguese dessert expert. And warning: this ain't downtown Palo Alto - you're definitely in the San Jose hood so don't expect any fancy streets or neighborhoods.

Clockwise from upper left: meringue, honey & cinnamon, bean, egg tarts
    Mary S.

Hole-in-the-wall bakery with good prices and yummy treats: What I got: -Tarts (around $1): egg, bean (surprisingly my favorite; it looks like chocolate but it's not!), honey & cinnamon - Meringue: airy and sweet, just the way it should be. - Portuguese sweet bread: a big loaf that reminds me of challah with a touch of lemon. I bet it would be great for French toast!

The cake for my daughters 1st birthday. The cupcake was her smash cake!

They're best known for their famous Burnt Almond Cake, though they also offer a variety of other pastries. Personally, I come here just for the cake. They sell it by the slice or cupcakes, and they also have whole cakes ready to go. If you're looking for a custom cake, though, be sure to place your order in advance. Whenever I'm in the area, I always stop by to pick up a few cakes to bring home for my family, but I can probably eat a whole cake to myself lol. Their prices are still surprisingly reasonable, which makes it even more worth the trip.

We ended up getting three burnt almond cake slices (2 vanilla 1 chocolate) and some brownies. The brownies were pretty good, balanced sweetness and chocolate flavor without being overwhelmingly sweet and I enjoyed the walnuts, but it was a very fudge like texture and I prefer my brownies to be slightly more cake-y and airy. If you like fudge brownies you'd like these. My issue was the burnt almond cake, both vanilla slices were on the dry side. The chocolate slice had a hint of chocolate otherwise tasted exactly the same. The almonds and cream were fine, I would've preferred stronger almond flavor. Was meh. Price is good at $5 for a hefty slice. If I'm in the area maybe I'd go back, otherwise it was about the same as a Safeway cake slice.

We didn't go overly sweet because it was the morning, but I would love to come back in the afternoon to have a nice sweet treat and a cappuccino. For my family of three we definitely got over excited in order too much, but each bite was delicious. We got a leek quiche, a banana latte, spinach, artichoke danish, mango croissant, almond croissant, and a ham and cheese croissant. I was trying to increase the protein to not spike my blood sugar. Lol. I'd have to say the mango and the almond croissant were probably my favorite. The strong second would definitely be the artichoke and spinach croissant danish thing. Sorry, I forgot what they called it. They offered to heat it up a bit and I definitely recommend this. They did the perfect temperature for the perfect timing. Just enough to make the outside flaky and the inside warm and soft. The pieces that had cheeses were so much better warmed up. They definitely know what they're doing there. Seating was great. I'd love the decor. You can also order off of a menu, but we were too enamored with the actual pastries to even glance at it. I took photos but made sure to not take photos of the staff. I let the staff know that I wouldn't include their faces without their permission. they were very friendly and very appreciative. My family loved your little shop and we will definitely be back when we're in the area.

We walked into a cozy, compact space with shelves filled with freshly baked breads, pastries, and prepared foods, all arranged in a way that makes you want to browse slowly even though the shop is small. The atmosphere has that simple, welcoming feel reminiscent of the small bakeries you find throughout Japan, focusing more on quality and variety than on a large café setup. Seating is limited, so it is better suited for grabbing something to go rather than spending a long time inside. The biggest draw here is the combination of Japanese baked goods and savory items. The bakery selection offers a great mix of sweet and savory options, with classics like melon pan standing out for its crisp sugary topping and soft interior that stays light without being dry. The curry bread and croquette bread are also popular choices, both feeling comforting and freshly made rather than overly sweet or greasy. The bakery items are reasonably priced, which makes it easy to pick up multiple things without feeling like you are spending too much, and the variety means there is always something new to try. The onigiri selection is what really makes Clover stand out compared to a typical bakery. They offer a variety of rice balls with fillings like spicy tuna, tuna mayo, and unagi, making it a great option for a quick breakfast or light meal. The rice is well balanced and the fillings give each onigiri a different personality. The spicy tuna has a nice kick that comes through without overpowering the rice, while the unagi adds a sweeter, more savory flavor that works especially well with the slightly salty rice. The onigiri are a practical, satisfying choice for anyone looking for something more substantial than a pastry. Beyond the baked goods and onigiri, Clover also has drinks, sandwiches, and desserts including cakes and other pastries. The strawberry cake is a nice lighter dessert option, and the overall menu gives plenty of reasons to visit whether you are looking for breakfast, a snack, or something to bring home. The offerings feel thoughtfully selected, with enough variety to cover different cravings without making the menu feel scattered. Service is friendly and efficient, and the small size of the shop adds to the charm. Since it has become a popular local spot, some items can sell out during busy hours, so arriving earlier gives you the best selection. Parking can also be a little challenging during peak times, but the quick grab-and-go style makes the visit easy to manage. Clover Bakery & Cafe is a great stop for anyone who enjoys Japanese bakeries. The combination of fresh breads, affordable prices, and unique savory options like onigiri makes it feel different from a standard bakery. It is the type of place where it is worth picking up a few items and trying a mix of everything, leaving you with the sense that you have found a little neighborhood gem that delivers on both quality and variety.

Husband called them around 11am and they said they were in the middle of making their strawberry cakes so they could add our order in for a same day pickup at 4pm. Pickup went well and the cake was so cute and it tasted great! Like the Chinese bakery strawberry cream cake with a moist sponge cake; not too sweet, just right. Might sound basic but it was done very well. Would 100% recommend. I don't know prices for cakes nowadays but I didn't feel bad paying about $60 for a cute and tasty cake (6", strawberry cream cake). I wouldn't bank on same day pickups, I might've just been very lucky they were in the middle of making their cakes but it wouldn't hurt to try calling early in the day if you're in a pinch for a solid cake. I'm very thankful for their service!

Finding parking isn't difficult…read morebut might take a minute on busy days, as it shares a parking lot with the rest of a popular plaza. The store itself is easy to find as well, with a clear label outside. Walking in, it looks half-closed--their cakes are all stored in a large refrigerator, with nothing in the case on the counter. There is a sign proclaiming "takeout only" in slight disarray, and the seating is pushed to the side. That said, the service is friendly and the employees are quick to help you and show you what they have in stock for takeout. I ordered the 4" Berry Berry Light Cake for a birthday, and they were able to write a birthday message on the cake board, which I really appreciated. The cake also tasted very light and the sweetness was subtle, which I really enjoyed. The berry flavor in the sponge was a little too subtle, though. My main concern is that the cake does not fully resemble the picture they advertised online. It is missing the freeze-dried berries on top, and the berry glaze did not reach as far down the cake as was shown in the photo. Because the berry glaze is the main source of the berry flavor, this was a little disappointing. Also, the cake was not finished when I came to pick up the cake (and I was ~5 minutes late). I'm uncertain if this is for freshness or if there is another reason. Overall, I like the spot for the fresh and light cake. It's pleasantly unique compared to your standard sheet cake, and everything is rather cute. However, it may be a better idea to buy the cakes in-person to be 100% sure of what it will look like, though daily stock is definitely more limited than if you place an order online. I hope they reopen their indoor seating soon.
