This place is one of a kind, if you grew up with Portuguese ancestors, especially here in the Bay Area. This is the LAST PLACE you can get coarse cut, hand measured and mixed, CHUNKY 'Di casa' style, HEAVY SMOKED, linguiça. This is what my Godmother used to make, real tangy Vinha D'Alhos, and no fine ground meat. And yes, they have morçella, and Vinha D'Alhos pork chunks in bags (sometimes). I'm of Scottish descent and learned to enjoy black-pudding from a young age. It is somewhat difficult to find UK style blood sausages in the US, but I've been searching high and low for the closest match - it's between this and Korean sundae. I love the consistency of this sausage. It can be cooked whole, but I prefer to slice and fry. It's dry enough to allow for a crispy fry that's hard to find in other blood sausages I can find locally. I've also bought the linguica and bacon - I liked them a lot from a quality standpoint. I grew up loving Linguica. Growing up in San Leandro there were many options for Linguica. Many now know the very tragic events that led to the end of Santos Linguica in 2000. So my search for Linguisa that had good flavor was not dry & did not give you heartburn was on. I would go to Costco and get Silva's just to know I had Linguica but Silva's Linguica is your typical middle of the road Linguica, you're just purchasing this if there are no other options. Over the years I've been doing my due diligence in trying any Linguica I could find. Again growing up in San Leandro we had Santos and after the horrific events that happened there we had Amaral's . Amaral too has closed its doors. My favorite sausages comes from lockford sausage in Lockford, I was so bummed out with thier Linguica it was too dry. Goularts Linguica is the very best I've had since Santos. Many yelpers and people on the internet have given Goularts Linguica great reviews,& this is a way overdue thumbs up for the Linguica that Goularts makes. I first stumbled across Goularts at a deli in Castro Valley, then I found that I can purchase Goularts in Bulk from Galvin Market in San Leandro. I've been a fan of Goularts now for over 8 yrs. Bringing them to any family event, even having them wrapped to share as gifts. Tip if your buying in bulk, kindly ask the person helping you to look for the bigger larger Linguica links, the thinner ones seem to cook faster. also if you go to Galvans Market in San Leandro they have an incredible selection of meats. read more

Was disappointed after all the many years of having Portuguese Sausage, the salt and smoke taste was more than what my wife and I have had with other items from other companies. The day we were there, there is only one parking space of just three, the store area was dark and really didn't have that many products on the shelves or in the refrigerator area. Sorry to say with the many Portuguese products I have had over many years with different companies that made or products imported, don't plan to buy any items from Goulart again. This is the only place to get your authentic Portuguese sausages. We got blood sausage, chorizo, and linguica. These sausages are authentic and chunks of meat (not ground meat). My husband said these are the best sausages he ever tasted. BTW, if you are there, ask for the Portuguese cheese. The only downside of this place is that you will never want to eat mass produced sausages again. read more

A great small business find, real hand made , smoked with wood sausage. By far the best linguica sausage I have had, market brands don't even come close to the intense flavor. We got the original chunk and blood sausage, great price, BBQ them, ate for a week. Old school man working the counter is also the guy that makes the sausage. Yes the place is in a older part of town but worth the trip, had their own small parking lot. If you are a sausage fan, need to try. Better than any premade hotlink to bbq. Great with rice. Also, you can see the wood they use out front, and can smell light smoke in the air. read more

I hit this sausage shop after visiting Silva... and this place is super-tiny and a smidge scary. ;) Lights off, not sure if anyone is there, barely any spot in the parking lot... but man, it's worth it. Goulart's linguica is the preferred brand amongst my Portuguese relatives, and they have several varieties. I appreciated the shopkeeper asking where my mother-in-law was from so he could direct us to the right version of the linguica from her island. ;) Don't be afraid of the surroundings - get some tasty authentic Portuguese sausages here! read more

Finally made it down here for some Linguica.The place seems like a institution for the san jose area by seeing the other reviews.I did like that they had firewood stacked outside and are smoking the traditional way.It's just okay...I grew up on santos in san leandro and have been most recently getting it at Taylors in Oakland where it's a much better linguica than this one...I guess unless you want to drive to the east bay than Goularts will do. read more

I have also tried the bacon and OMG, so good!! The blood sausage also is always amazing. Keep in mind it's a mom and pop shop running in a modern world. After many disappointments with the bland precooked store bought linguica, it's great to find this place. It's the best linguica that I've had in years. The blend of the spices and smoking is very nice. When cooked, the aroma brings back very pleasant memories of Avó and Avô cooking. I grew up on Santos' linguica, which became the benchmark for all sausage in my mind. Since the "Sausage King" went nuts and Santos became a delectable and distant memory, I've hunted everywhere (everywhere) for good linguica and failed in my hunt. Until I discovered Goulart Sausage Company. Goulart's regular linguica has got the flavor of Santos' "cold" smoke process, but it's done using techniques which are approved under modern food safety guidelines (the part that got Santos in trouble). And this may be blasphemy, but I like the texture better than Santos: it's all high quality pork and the seasoning is phenomenal, without the hideous salt+paprika+MSG+nitrates kick of nearly all other store bought brands (which aren't even fit for soups, in my opinion). This is the kind of linguica you'll relish on its own, in a sandwich, or alongside some eggs and fried potatoes for family breakfasts, just like when I was growing up. The best part, they put the invoice along with the food - they won't take money up front. Talk about old country! And shipping is really reasonable, even to grandma in Hawaii. I love these guys. I hope they're around forever. Just make sure and get ahold of somebody who speaks English (owner may make you call back so he can get somebody manning the phones who can take your order). Order 10 lbs, the low shipping cost makes it worth it (plus you'll run out quicker than you think). Enjoy! read more

A classic SJ institution, right in "Little Portugal" the Alum Rock area is bad-ass. The shop is classic. Great linguiça. As a matter of fact it's so good, that the Portuguese cultural center and hall in SD where I live buys thousands of pounds from Goulart's. The day I was there, a huge truck was there from San Diego loading up thousands of pounds. They have all the Portuguese goods your are looking for. Olive oil, several types and styles of linguiça, blood sausage, great can's of tuna, large chunks of smoked uncut bacon-fat, which would be great for making garbanzo bean soup; Hawaiian Portuguese red bean soup, or feijoada. Or make a BLT with super thick cut bacon and blow your face off with amazing flavor. The shop is OLD-SCHOOL, I mean real old-school, you can still write out personal checks. The operation is old-world...and is just the right kind of grit and grind that you can only find up in the Bay Area. Support this shop, it's one of the last of its kind. Walk the area, check out the massive Catholic church near by, and check out the Portuguese hall and Portuguese soccer club locations, very cool. read more

This little place makes the best linguica and Portuguese chourico in the South Bay. They use wood for the smoke (sometimes it is piled up in the parking lot out front) and the best pork. The linguica and chourico is lean and cut into chunks. Also, they do not use MSG which you find in some of the big operations like Silva's. You can't go wrong with the Portuguese chourico made in the Azorean style. I have been buying at Goulart's for years and have never been unhappy. The location is hard to find. There are auto repair shops around, but it worth the drive. I think they are closed Mondays. I'd call ahead first. Since it is small, the owner may decide to go away for a weekend. It's good to find a small business that makes a great product in the fast-food empire of Silicon Valley. read more

Went to my grandparents house over thanksgiving and noticed she had these sausages in the storage freezer (don't ask, my grandmother can feed an entire army at any given time). I asked about them and she said that they were too spicy for grandpa so I should take them home with me. I did and cooked one of these linguicia's. I was in heaven. I just ate it with some eggs for breakfast and it was great. I cooked the other 2 in a spaghetti and wow. I'm glad to hear that the place is located in San Jose because I'm in Hayward. I would like for them to list outlets where I could purchase a little closer to me on their site but It's not that far away. Best sausages I've ever tasted. Like many from the Hayward area, I could not find a good linguica since Santos & Amaral have departed. While searching online for linguica, I found reviews here mentioning Santos. Today I drove to Goulart and purchased some. It is very much like Santos was but more smoky. I gave 5 stars in comparison to the only brand I can find at Safeway's or Lucky's. Goulart is on the smoky side, if I was aware of another good tasting linguica I would have rated 4 stars because of the smoke. read more

I'm talking about the best linguica this side of the Azores. I grew up on Silva's loose linguica never packaged. Since it went corporate, the authenticity of taste and quality has suffered. Thank goodness for Goulart's honest old world family recipes. I prefer the smoked linguica which is flavorful unlike any other. We recently tried the marinated pork. This has become another favorite. Prior to today the last I had Marcela blood pudding was at a family hog butchering near Visalia, Ca. I'm 65 now and was about 12 to 14 then. Boy have I missed out. I called Goulart's for cooking suggestions today and fried some rounds of Goulart's Marcela as recommended then grilled some too. Good God how was that great or what!!! It's a flaver to die for. I have tried all available in local stores, and found none close, and even tried a highly rated 100 year recipe linguica from back east (Gaspars is quite good but...). The linguica from Goulart Sausage Company has the flavor and quality I remember from my youth (chunk style mild). Off the grill, pizza, pasta sauce, etc, you won't be disappointed.
