Nova Paving Industries - Crooked pillar using A-1 sidewalk bricks... I pay them to know the proper bricks to use... 3rd party had to tell me to take everything down

Unfortunately, this is the worst final product that we have experienced in our years of dealing with various home contractors. We hired NoVA Paving to replace our crumbling slate walkway with new pavers. We have undergone many home improvement projects over the years and have had mostly good experiences, but this was anything but. Instead of taking the proper time and effort to establish a deeper foundation, NoVA Paving used our existing, very shallow foundation. This left the pavers lifted from the adjacent driveway, sidewalk and grass. To keep it in place they placed slipshod concrete wherever it would have otherwise immediately crumbled. After the job, they told us that using the existing foundation "saved us money" and that we have no issue. As seen in pictures: * Multiple areas of pavers coming loose after the installation. * The entirety of some pavers are exposed with hollow spaces underneath. * Because they never established a proper foundation to even out the pavers with the sidewalk, they had to dump a slab of concrete where pavers should have been placed. The worst part was that they did not even tell us about the concrete until AFTER the job was completed. * Concrete securing the pavers in other areas has a terrible aesthetic. * We were charged $700 extra to haul away the old slate - which was not discussed beforehand or included in quote. When we told Mark about the problems, we got the run around for a month before they finally sent a foreman out to investigate. This was when we were told that there was nothing that could be done about the shallow foundation without a complete re-do of the entire job. We then asked for a partial refund and were told by Nova Paving to just take some dirt and put it up against the sides of the pavers, and that we did not have an issue.

These guys replaced my driveway last Winter, and large parts of it are already failing. I asked…read morethem to fix it under their 1-year warranty and they refused, citing "base failure" as something that is not covered under their warranty. My fault for not reviewing the warranty more carefully and making them remove base failure. But I warn anyone who does business with these guys that they are do not do high quality work, nor do they stand by their work. If you do decide to work with them, read their warranty very carefully. The warranty is filled with typos and contradictions; best to make sure you understand everything that is in the warranty if you decide to work with these guys, and don't let them put broad, non-descript exclusions in there such as "base failure". I posted some photos below of their shoddy work. This work was done less than 9 months ago. Even if you have to pay a bit more for another contractor, it is worth it based on my experience. Poor work and zero accountability - not a good combo!!

They did not try to enlarge the project beyond my requested size and needs, and they handled all the permits, inspections, and such. They brought down my grill and fire pit from the old deck, removed and disposed of my old picnic table and umbrella at no extra charge, and brought the grill and fire pit back up when the deck was done. The new deck is beautiful: Trex Transcends composite decking in Tiki Torch with a black railing and Tiki Torch cocktail rail, matching 52" wide steps with lights as required by code, and sturdy wood frame below the deck. They started sooner than required in the contract, and while the build took on the longer side due to the July heat, they finished before the contract start date. Many neighbors have admired the deck and even expressed jealousy. I would recommend Pro Deck Installers to anyone.

I usually do the design for all house projects, but Pro Deck (Gerry) came up with a super elegant design for me and he also actually came up with the best design out of all, while three of the other contractors either ignored or forgot my requirements and gave a single quote or partial quotes for 3-4 options discussed. Gerry is meticulous with the quote he provided, and the details were relevant in comparison to the others I received. ProDeck Installers will work with you to address your HOA headaches and shenanigans, which I had with offset measurements and approvals, etc and will do the work for the county permit. One of the other contractors that gave the lowest quote said to me "you don't need a permit" - beware! Pro Deck Installers' price is very competitive, but for the quality of the materials I was getting, it was really the best deal. As for the work getting done, again quality and timeliness was top notch. Tony and their guys are very efficient, professional and they care about the work they do. For so long I put off getting a new deck because of all the hassle that comes with it, but the experience I had with them really exceeded my expectations. The ProDeck Installers team is just truly genuine and honest in how they do business and I'm grateful for them.

It was something we wanted to do for a long time, and we finally felt ready. Since a deck is part of the structure of a home, I wanted to make sure we got a vendor who was licensed, insured and experienced. I got a couple of estimates, and a neighbor had recommended the people they had used and said that they were able to get a permit quickly. Because I wanted to get my deck done before the summer, I decided to request a quote. Dan from Valer Builders met with at my home and did some measuring and talked a good talk. It ia amazing how people behave when they are trying to get your business. The estimate I was provided with was about 6k over what my other vendors had provided but Dan persisted and when I told him what I had been quoted, he asked for proof and tried to match it. I was a little hesitant as to how much he kept trying to get my business and how quickly he dropped his prices but, in the end, I thought that I would be dealing with a professional company, one that would provide great quality work, quality materials and great customer service. I was WRONG! After coming to an agreement, signing the contract and putting down the deposit and getting the permit, a date was set to start the work. On the first day, Dan showed up and then a crew showed up and he introduced me to his "Project Manager". The crew started the work and for the most part they were doing a great job until they started installing the pickets. I noticed that there was a huuuuuuge difference on the wood, it was NOT new material as promised. I reached out to Dan and sent pictures of which he also agreed that the wood was not grade A. I was not happy because his crew previously tried to claim the extra material that I was paying for and then installed old wooden pickets. I first mentioned it to his "Project Manager" who was actually his subcontractor. The subcontractor at first denied to have installed old wood but I have eyes and it was very clear that I was not being provided with new wood and when I texted Dan the pictures, he agreed with me and asked his "Project Manager" to change them out. One of the laborers even mentioned that he told the "PM" that they shouldn't use that wood but that he was told to just do it. I was not happy and finally Dan came to see it himself and said that he had ordered 20 new pickets to be replaced and felt the need to show the invoice of the extra expense he will have to pay. He acted like he was doing me a favor and even told me to call his vendors. Why would a customer need to do that? Your job is to provide good quality materials. When I asked him if he had inspected the materials, he seemed to get offended by the question and started being rude and disrespectful. I had to remind him that I was the customer, and it got to the point that I had to kick him off my property due to his tone of voice. At this point I just wanted to get the work done and not deal with him again. His "Project Manager" listened to the whole conversation and knew I was upset and offered to change all the pickets. I didn't want to take out my disappointment with the subcontractor, so I simply asked him to replace the real bad ones which I have pictures off. The last step of the project was to fix the flooring which I had just installed a few years back. The quality of work was very poor, and my floor does not look good. His masonry subcontractor tried twice and said with time that the material he used would set and it would look good. Two months later, my patio floor is not up to standard. At the beginning of June, the electricity in my house went out and I called the electricians who installed my new electrical box a few months ago. They confirmed that it wasn't the box and called Dominion Power for me and had then come to my property. It was determined by Dominion Power that the vendor that installed the deck placed a post in an area that caused the electrical line to break. Dominion power asked if I knew if the vendor who installed the deck called Miss Utility before they did the work. I hope they have proof that they did. Dominion Power determined that the damage was caused by the deck installation, and they said they will charge the vendor but that Dominion Power doesn't fix the flooring. I had no choice but reach out to Dan and informed him of the situation and that I needed someone to fix the floor that Dominion Power open up around one of the deck's post and to please fix the flooring throughout since the work his team did looks bad. Shared pictures with Dan and he declined to make things right, so he leaves me no choice but to take necessary action. I DO NOT RECOMMEND Valer.

5-Star Review - Excellent Asphalt & Paver Driveway Installation…read more We had our asphalt driveway and surrounding paver trim completed in mid-April, and now that it's fully cured, I can confidently say the work was top-notch. The surface is smooth, evenly compacted, and blends beautifully with our landscaping. The clean transition between the asphalt and the paver border really elevates the curb appeal of our home. There are no signs of dips, cracks, or uneven areas, and drainage has been working perfectly--even after recent rain. The crew was professional, punctual, and detail-oriented from start to finish. Thank you Bernard and his crews for a job well done. We're very happy with the results and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a quality driveway installation.

Initially, the owner was very responsive and accommodating throughout the sales process. However, once issues arose, my experience changed significantly. Rather than addressing my concerns directly, I encountered delays, excuses, and a lack of accountability. What is most disappointing is that I genuinely believed I was working with a reputable company. Within just a few months, my driveway began showing signs of erosion and deterioration that I would not expect from a newly completed project. Despite raising these concerns, I was unable to get a satisfactory resolution. Based on my experience, I would recommend that potential customers proceed with caution and carefully review all warranties, expectations, and terms before hiring this company. Now I'm pretty much gonna be paying double the price for another company to come out and fix your problem. So dishonest.

And then they kept happening, getting larger and spreading throughout the entirety of the house, and we could no longer open the doors in the basement and 1st floor on the south side of the house. Alarmed, I called a civil engineer and had an assessment done. They ascertained our house was sinking, particularly in one corner, and recommended ~30 push piers around the perimeter and up the centerline of the house... for over $100k. I literally laughed at him and asked him who he thought I was that he thought I could afford that. I called a few other places and got questionable assessments, and then I spoke with Yos from DMV. What a breath of fresh air. He was personable and honest. He recommended we get a 3rd party civil engineer to produce a report with drawings that I could use for any foundation company - even if I didn't go with DMV. We (finally, after a loooong delay on the civil engineer's part) got the report and drawings, and Yos and his team began work in early January to install ~10 helical piers on the sinking corner of the house. It was a pretty invasive project, but his team was fantastic. Fast forward 5 months and the cracks have stopped appearing, with a number of them even closing. We are very satisfied with the work DMV did for us, and are particularly pleased with their honesty. Where one company tried to sell us an overkill solution for six figures, Yos was upfront and told us what we really need - to address that affected area and revisit others if they end up being an issue - for roughly a quarter of the other company's price. That sort of honesty and pricing earns a permanent spot in my trusted contractor list.
