Before fabrication, I asked that the design be clearly documented because this is a custom staircase. My request was simply to have the final design, post locations, mounting method, wood profile, and other critical details documented either in the renderings, shop drawings, or contract so there would be no misunderstandings during fabrication. Instead of working through those requests, I was told that providing that level of documentation would add approximately $2,500 to the project and that SoCal Stairs would no longer move forward with my project due to workload and the amount of detail I requested. Everyone has different expectations, but for a custom project of this size, I believe asking for clear documentation before fabrication is reasonable. I appreciate that they chose to decline the project before work began rather than after fabrication, but I was disappointed that after asking me to give them a second chance, they ultimately decided not to proceed because I wanted the design documented in writing.

They cleaned up at the end of each day and we never lost the use of the staircase which was a total bonus given: kids, dogs etc... Just a great experience and well within our budget. We got bids from at least 3 licensed companies. Let me list out all of the reasons why we ended up choosing Brian and Semper. First and foremost, you actually deal directly with the owner of the company which is Brian himself. He does not just oversee your project, but he's the one working alongside the trenches with his crew. His professionalism and friendliness throughout the process made our project experience equally as important aside from the final masterpiece. You have to experience for yourself that he puts every attention, detail and true care to his work as if it were his own house! For instance, he proactively ran by us that he would like to add extra balusters and raise up our hallway handrails for safety. His crew are super clean after each hard day's work and always willing to communicate and accommodate during the project. Semper came in right at the middle with regard to pricing. It sounds cliche' that there's a saying "you get what you pay for." I'll also add to that quote, "if you're lucky." You will definitely get both and more with Brian! Just have patience when it comes to the initial pricing quotes or having Brian actually take a look at your project. Do not let his lack in initial communication in getting a quote as a sign that he's not interested in your project. As a reminder he's actually the one working alongside his crew so his time is limited during the day and is typically busy working during the day. He doesn't send someone else to do his bids. He's the one from initial quotes to the construction of your project. I would say that if you're in need of a full redo or gutting of your stairs go with Semper. You will get what you paid for if not more. We cannot stop marveling at our stairs since it's one of the main features as you open your front door for guest or just overrall an everyday high traffic area that my family often notice daily. We had him come over to the home and take measurements. He answered all my questions and said he would provide a quote later that night. He stuck to his estimate and sent me a work order. I paid promptly and scheduled a time to have him come to our home and do the install. He came over and finished the job in about 3 days, we had a decent sized staircase. While there were a few things we should have discussed and gotten in writing, but for the price and responsiveness it wouldn't be fair to still not give him 5 stars. I ended up sending him over to my general contractor who ended up referring him to his current clients on their home renovations that they were working on.
