After my first review, Don contacted me directly and asked for another opportunity to earn my business. I agreed, gave SoCal Stairs a second chance, and accepted a revised proposal. Before fabrication, I asked that the design be clearly documented because this is a custom staircase. My request was simply to have the final design, post locations, mounting method, wood profile, and other critical details documented either in the renderings, shop drawings, or contract so there would be no misunderstandings during fabrication. Instead of working through those requests, I was told that providing that level of documentation would add approximately $2,500 to the project and that SoCal Stairs would no longer move forward with my project due to workload and the amount of detail I requested. Everyone has different expectations, but for a custom project of this size, I believe asking for clear documentation before fabrication is reasonable. I appreciate that they chose to decline the project before work began rather than after fabrication, but I was disappointed that after asking me to give them a second chance, they ultimately decided not to proceed because I wanted the design documented in writing. read more

HEADLINE: Failure to communicate potential limitations of choices up front. Handrails simply don't match. The workmanship was good, build quality was good. And they were generally very kind. Crew was very kind and competent. The work was done in a timely manner. However, the issue we have is that the natural wood handrails do not match. Some of the rails are noticeably darker. We did not know, and were not told, how difficult it was to match unstained, clearcoated oak handrails. That's because differentials in raw wood become much more pronounced once they are shellacked. By the way, when I say "match" we knew it wouldn't match perfectly, but the end result, like I said, is an actual and obvious difference in color. This could have been avoided with better communication up front. Had we known the difficulty, perhaps would could/should have chosen perhaps a light stain or something else for the handrails. They did make an effort, by swapping them out, for free (required a little pressure, they didn't initially do it willingly). It made it better, but still not correct. There were also some posts that we chose, not knowing how larger they were (we hadn't seen them in person) and they were way too massive, and they made those adjustments willingly without question, which was appreciated. I do appreciate that they (in particular Andrew, a standup guy) came to see it himself, and took time to explain why it ended up the way it did, and given everything, we understand now why. But again, had we known up front of the difficulty, we would have made different choices. THAT is their failure. Not clearly warning us up front. And the end result looks funny, and frankly, wrong. So I have to leave 3 stars, because, end result, the color is off. Picture attached for you to see. read more

We had our new staircase put in 2019. Year later the base in which the posts and banister is attached began the show vertical crakes. We called Bill our sales person . After several weeks Richard came out to look at the cracks. He assessed the issue and says he'd have Hunan ( as Bill was not there ) call me for an appointment. Week later Richard arrived to repair the crack. 8 months later the cracks appeared on the other corners. I reached out to Hunan but he had since left the company and Andrew took my call. At this time I was told the cracks must be a settling issue and as the did not replace the original base only railing posts and banister , he felt he could not continue to pay to have it repaired. Showed him the areas of concern and asked him to give him his resolution on getting the base repaired. It took about 3 wks for Andrew to provide me his quote. ( he was busy with clients and apologized for taking so long in getting back to me . We agree on a price and he is due to repair the base this Thursday . Richard arrived and repaired the base. It took him approx 1 hr. Keeping my fingers crossed no more cracks. I am giving only 4 stars bc of the issues I had with the base , not the company. I recommend the team and So Cal Stairs. read more

I think the fact that I was eight months pregnant when the project was started and I now have a nine month old and it's STILL NOT COMPLETED says it all! We thought we were paying top dollar to get a job done well, but instead we have cracked woodwork, unfinished baby gates, and mismatched wood styles around the baby gates. Of course we made the mistake of making the final 10% payment thinking that they would in good faith take care of the remaining problems, but instead they no longer respond to emails or calls. BEWARE! Run the other way! I am happy to tell you the whole story from start to finish if you message me, but with two little ones running around I don't have time to type it all right now. read more

Contacted Daniel the Sales Consultant for SoCal Stairs.We decided to visit their showroom in Paramount. I recommend making the drive to Paramount. Dan was able to give us some great ideas showing various samples to help us narrow down what look we wanted. After a brief discussion he came up with a very competitive estimate on the remodel. Based on the professionalism and confirming that they would be able to complete the entire remodel in less than a few weeks, we decided on the visit to go with SoCal Stairs. We provided a deposit, they started the work 2 weeks later. The crew was on site a total of 6 days with 8 team members. My original stairs were built in 1964 (a Fountain Valley, CA model home) and needed an update........The crew did the demo in a day, did the dry wall, wood working, sanding, finishing and staining, then had a special team match the exsisting laminate floor color. The last day was installing the wrought iron. read more

I would not recommend this company to anyone. We hired this company for a $12,000 stair remodel with custom gates for children in the summer of 2020. They were supposed to complete the staircase in July prior to our second child arriving in August. They did not meet this deadline. Nevertheless, we understood that delays can occur. By September we had contacted them a couple times to fix the custom baby gates and a baluster. The custom baby gates were starting to fall apart, there was orange peel/rough paint spots, and one of the balusters had lots of damage prior to installation. They came out in October, sanded the rough paint, removed the baluster to repaint it and removed the gate. They came back in November and placed the gate back on without it being stained or finished. stating that they would have someone come out to re-stain it the next week. No one came to stain our gate. The baluster they replaced has visible fingerprints in the paint. They have not sent out anyone to correct this. We have contacted them multiple times and all we get are different reasons why they have been delayed. The owner Hanno says the had a couple of their staff off due to Covid. I am not surprised by this because upon review of camera footage back in July many of their staff removed their masks while working in the house. Now after their work has settled a bit their seams/craftsmanship is falling apart. I contacted Hanno again and he said he would call me the following Tuesday. I never received a call. I emailed him asking for him to finish his work and no response. This company is horrible and I would not recommend them for any work. read more

Mike is a very unprofessional, condescending individual of low quality and poor taste whom aught not deal in public relations "EVER". Upon me sharing my objective for my stairs he posed the question " do you have a budget?" I responded, "I'd like you to give me some options (while viewing photos I emailed to him the night before) and based on those options and their costs, I will put together a budget". Mike then stated, "hundreds & thousands of $$$". I followed with "why is that". Mike rebutted "do you pass by a Rolls Royce or Ferrari shop and ask, why so expensive??? I abruptly ended the call realizing that I had spoken with him on a previous occasion while shopping contractors, that ended with him basically calling me poor. I suspect, inferring I am African American & female, told me to "stop wasting his time asking probing questions when he could tell I can't afford it...just before hanging up in my face. I am a potential customer seeking information, and renovation options, guidance & direction from an alleged professional, not glib comments and snide remarks sprinkled with a layer of disrespect. I am not a relative, friend or even a remote acquaintance of Mike. ...and there is an appropriate time and place for everything under the sun. Mike needs a lesson in professional Etiquette, and proper decorum in business. First impressions provides insight to the challenges of navigating his unrefined & primitive personality while attempting to do business with him which, I anticipate, would resemble pulling wisdom teeth from a Lyon (as my father would say). Review for Sales Department My experience with them is very brief. I didn't even get to get a quote from the sales person. I provided all the information they needed for a quick quote. I do not have the time during the day to sit on the phone and go over the design and needs of my project for a quote. I requested a straight forward quote that should be easy to provided given their expertise. The sales person on the phone told me he has to go through 200 requests and he does not have the time to email me the quote. Well, thank you for your help. I will take my business somewhere and save myself the trouble of all the other bad reviews I have seen here. I know Yelp sucks, and mostly only bad reviews make it online, but there is a reason this is happening to this firm so often, and from my brief experience I can concur. The entire staff did a fantastic job - from working with Bill on the estimate to Andrew with the scheduling - everything went smoothly. I recently had railing installed in my home in Santa Monica. I worked with Eric and Andrew. Eric was beyond helpful and responded to hundreds of my questions immediately. He was very detailed and patient and explained how the process worked with both stairs and railing. Andrew managed the actual process which happened very quick and on time without a single issue. The craftsmanship was remarkable and really added a ton of wow effect when you first come in the door. we had a minor hiccup with there being putty show through the stain where they filled the holes, but they made it right in the end. Well, our little beasts ate our staircase and since we are selling our home, this needed to be remedied and quickly! I called no less than 12 contractors. Eric got back to me right away and did a phone estimate based on pictures. The following week, So.Cal Stairs didn't just send a contractor, they sent a master craftsman to my house and reconstructed the stairs to perfection. We were worried about the stain match, but once again, So.Cal Stairs said they had a guy who's job it was specifically to match the color. His team came out two days later and within one hour, our house was restored to it's move in glory! Absolutely beautiful and we couldn't be more thrilled. I contacted them online to get a quote. First I was contacted by Dan by email. I was awaiting his call. But, then Mike called me. This guy was rude, condescending, and acted like he was the owner of the company. Turns out he was just a sales guy/estimator. Told me over the phone it could cost approximately $10K, but could go up to $15K with the details. WTH? That a huge range. Then he came to my house for the estimate and measurements. Told me how, what, and why he couldn't do the design as I asked. Little did he know that he was the 5th estimate to come through my doors. I have never heard of a more negative, "I hate my job", "life sucks" attitude to come out of anyone's mouth than this guy. It's sad that you are stuck in a job that you absolutely hate and a drive that is so far you practically suffer an ulcer from the daily road rage dealing with traffic. I immediately sent him walking and hoped the door didn't hit him on his way out. No estimate, didn't give him more than 5 minutes. I cannot have such a negative individual walk through my door and have this "I know it all attitude." I attempted to contact Dan, left a message to have him call me back and perhaps we could start over with a more positive team member. He didn't call back. When I bought my condo in 2012, it was sold to me without a railing on the stairs. For safety reasons, I obviously needed to rectify this, so I got estimates from a couple different companies, SoCal Stairs included. Not only was SoCal Stairs prompt in responding to me, the man who came to do my estimate, Don, was friendly and courteous, and the experience made me feel really good about the company as a whole. He stayed within my budget without pressuring me to go higher, and waited patiently without harassing me while I got other estimates, and readily answered all my questions about the work, the cost, the materials, and the process. I was really appreciative, so when I received a slightly lower estimate from another company, I took it back to Don. He was able to match it and come up with a solution that looks beautiful in my home. Scheduling was a breeze, and the entirety of the work was completed over the course of two days -- one for construction, and one for staining the wood railings. I'm very happy with the job they did, and with the company as a whole, and would definitely recommend this company to anyone considering getting work done on their stairs. read more

My house was built in the 70's. And I've been trying to get it OUT of the 70's for a long time. One project that made a big difference was finally getting the railing and banister replaced. I searched for a while and talked with a few different companies regarding this and had a hard time finding the right people for the job (some never called back....some said my job was too small). I ended up with SoCal Stairs and am very happy with the job they did. I started the process via email with Bill, and he was able to send pictures of samples of work they had done. I found one that was EXACTLY what I wanted. Bill had the estimate done, and the work was completed a couple of weeks later. The difference in how it makes the house look is dramatic. The guys at SoCal Stairs were great to work with. Installation on one day....finishing the next day. The stain they mixed for me matched my furniture precisely. Were they the cheapest? Hanno is a threatening figure that hates women and lies about this quality, standards and ethics. We will most likely wind up in court. He immediately identified the source of the problem (squeaky top of hardwood stairs) in that the original contractor had failed to properly install sub-flooring. Words cannot express what an ATROCIOUS experience doing business with this company was. SAVE YOURSELF THE HEAD ACHE AND MONEY IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING THEM AND RUN! SoCal Stairs is just a group of sales people without actual knowledge or ability to construct stair banisters. We needed to install a stair banister in order to close escrow on a house we wanted to buy, so naturally we were anxious to get the job done as soon as possible. We chose SoCal Stairs because the rep on the phone, after describing what we wanted to him, said they could complete the job in 3 days and start as soon as the permit was pulled. The next day the rep, Don, came out to actually look at the stairs. He confirmed that they could do the job and all the details we wanted that we had gone over the previous day. The day after that my husband and I received the formal blueprints needed to get the permit pulled. We placed our deposit and pulled the permit the day after that. When my husband called Don that afternoon he said they would begin work in a week. He expressed to him the urgency to have the job completed and that he had already told us they would start work as soon as permit was pulled, which it was now. He refused to start the job any sooner. A week later an unmarked van pulled up to the house and began work. I hadn't realized this "stair" company just outsourced the work to real construction companies. Needless to say, I paid double what I would have if I had gone straight to the construction company. Two days go by and I went to check on the progress. The work looked good so far, except it was not assembled like we agreed to. It was NOT assembled according to the blueprints. I informed the owner Jake, who told me what we wanted (banister to begin on the first step) could not be done. I told him his employee Don, assured us we could and the blueprints THEY DREW showed they could too. He argued with me and said Don was "JUST A SALES REP" and didn't know what was actually possible to construct. I called the city to check the building code. The city verified the banister CAN begin on the first step. I called Jake back and he still refused to have the work corrected. My husband called Jake the next day, and immediately Jake began to insult me to my husband. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!? Anyway, after over an hour of arguing with my husband Jake finally agreed to have the work corrected. The job was finished (improperly) in total after 6 days. We closed escrow and then the workers were supposed to come back to correct the mistakes. After giving us the run around with scheduling for 3 MONTHS I finally got my stair banister properly completed. read more

We contacted So Cal to remodel our iron staircase into a glass staircase, and it was one of the most professional experiences we have had while dealing with contractors! The initial salesman (Bill), was very informative, efficient and patient with all our concerns ...even returning twice with different samples to ensure our satisfaction. The installer (Richard), was very courteous, professional and always on time. The engineer (Hanno), demonstrated the upmost concern for installing the best possible staircase for our remodel....and contrary to some other reviews, he was extremely courteous, professional and knowledgeable. The result is a beautiful new glass staircase and we couldn't be more pleased....they exceeded our expectations! The one star rating is because I was not allowed to give a 0. Our stairs look cheap and terrible and they even had to come in and attempt to build them twice. Their estimate was higher than other companies and promised custom work which was far from the truth. We have loose rails and have nails sticking out of our floor and scratches caused by the company that were never fixed. The company has stopped responding to our complaints. They lied to us by saying all of their workers were employed by them and in fact that are not and are mere independent contractors who also work for other companies. They do not have a general contractor that oversees the project which is ridiculous. I should not be expected at act as a general contractor for this magnitude of a project. They took much longer than expected therefore resulting in a large expense of boarding our dog longer than we expected. They left us without any rails whatsoever after they ripped out our previous stairs for more than a week. Our only bedrooms are upstairs with two small kids so we had the kids sleep in the living room downstairs. Seriously do not use this company. It was the largest waste of money. It makes me cry thinking about how much money we saved to refinish our stairs and how terrible they look now. They are an eyesore when you walk through our front door. SoCal was the only company of the three with good customer service (one company never bothered to callt back and the other would not do anything in person..just by photos over the internet). Bill was so incredibly informative and patient with my numerous questions. He always responded in a timely manner and did the right amount of follow up. Bill was very professional.
