The people working this organization deserve all they could ever want. They save so many animals who are in need. It was a fluke that I found them. A quick Google search on adoption in North jersey and they popped up with a few others. I was sitting in a meeting and because the application process was online, I filled it out without very much research into the group. I've never been so glad to have had to sit through that boring meeting. Our application was accepted. It wasn't until almost 5 months later that we saw pictures on their Facebook about the ton of puppies coming in that just needed held and played with. We went to their site. We met Natalie. I've never been so much in love so fast. We took her home that day. They provided a ton of info to new puppy parents. Microchip. Spay. Tags. Vaccines. Vet visit voucher. All of those things were great but nothing will beat the feeling of waking up to those paws in our faces. read more

NEVER going here again. This company is cruel and only cares about money. I occasionally stop in to look at the cats in the store and eventually fell in love with a kitten they had. It was the first time I had even considered adopting another cat since the passing of my first cat and this kitten felt like she was meant for me. I bonded with her in the play room and filled out an application. They then told me they needed proof of my other male cat being neutered and vaccinated even though he has always been an indoor cat. Since we don't have a record of that we had to make a vet appointment for him which took us about 5 days and cost $150 JUST to submit an application to adopt. The employees at 11th hour were aware of the delay and said it was perfectly fine. I sent in the paperwork the second we got home from the vet. A couple days later I received 2 emails saying my application was approved, and the other said that the cat I applied for had been adopted. I called and emailed 2 different employees and they told me that they don't hold animals and that I shouldn't have gotten attached to the cat. Why the hell would I adopt a cat I wasn't attached to and then why do they have a bonding room? I was also told at the time that I submitted the application that no one else had applied for this cat, and when I emailed them they told me that there were several people interested in the cat. I understand that our application took a week to complete but the company was aware of the circumstances regarding my male cat and they told us it was fine. They also told me that I would've been unfit to raise the cat because she was "high spirited" whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. My dad also reached out to the employee that was helping us with our application until she blocked his number. This company does not care about its animals or people's feelings whatsoever. They adopt their animals out to whoever can give them the money first. I only hope the cat I applied for went to a family who will love her as much as I would've. read more

Amazing shelter. I adopted my kitten (mylo) from them and they were great. Their website is totally up to date with photos and descriptions of each animal. Susan kept in touch with me online sending me photos and setting up a time to meet him. When picking him up they sent me home with a little start up kit which was very sweet. They also followed up two weeks after the adoption to make sure everything was okay. All animals come with tracking chips which I think is an amazing idea. I submitted an application with my boyfriend of 3 years for a dog. We sent them family pets records as requested. They called all of our references, basically harassing them until they picked up the phone. Our references had really nice things to say, and were very outgoing about how a pet would be ideal for us. They called me to ask why I didn't put in a cat adoption form, and I said I was open to both but we wanted a dog a little more. She suggested to put in an app for a cat because we're a younger couple, and with work, that may be more ideal. She even said we were the "perfect couple" to do so. So we did. And we got denied. No one would tell us why. I called twice, emailed two different email addresses, and not one person could give me a valid reason. Such bs. Not to mention my small business, in its first month, donated a percentage of its profits to here for the month of June. Absolute BS. read more

We rescued out sweet boy Jax from 11th hour rescue about a year and a half ago. Everything went smooth and fantastic! My boys foster mother was nothing short of amazing. She is now my Facebook friends, and when I adopted him asked for me to stay in touch and share photos- which I do! She has reached out to make sure he is happy and healthy and even reached out to wish him a happy Birthday! My boy had to have knee surgery and I let her know and asked if she could let the other puppy owners from his litter know Incase they had similar issues. EHR lies about their dogs. My sister adopted a dog from them a few years ago. She was told that he was 1 1/2 to 2 years old, but when she took him to the vet, it turns out that he was at least five. Within a year or two, he started to have some serious health problems. Upon evaluation, the vet said that he was probably 10 or older. I understand that they want to see dogs get adopted, but that's not the way to get it done. Also, I've been to their adoption centers, and several times I've seen them call a dog that is clearly a pit bull or pit bull mix, something completely different. There are a lot of misconceptions about pit bulls, and because of that, they are banned by apartment complexes, HOA's, towns, home insurance companies, etc. No one wants to adopt a dog and then have to take it back because they're not allowed to have it where they live. I completed the application and was told that they have the application and I would be getting a call. I never got a call. I feel as if this place may be overwhelmed. Do not use this place! They do not care about the animals as they should. They are also quite rude to speak with. They lost out on one of their pups going to a loving home because they are all on a power trip. My family was told we could not have a puppy because we worked even though I assured them someone would be spending time with the pup during the day. How can someone afford to live in NJ and not work never mind add on the expense of a puppy? They still denied us. Although they tell you it is first come first serve, I personally believe they set up adoptions and give pups to people they know first. So basically you tell people no and keep the animals caged a bit longer. Yea that sounds fair to the animal. Do not waste your time with this place or these people! Do your research first. read more

I visited 11th Hour Rescue's location at the Rockaway Mall, which seemed nice enough. Looked like it was previously a pet shop. Not much assistance there. Staff in charge didn't seem very friendly. No one asked if I needed help. I filled out an application online instead and was rejected. Interestingly enough Clifton Animal Shelter had no problem approving of our loving home for a pet. We own a home, have had a pet previously. No sure what the problem is. The alternative is to buy a pet. Visited their Rockaway Mall adoption center today and left feeling horrible for the poor dogs there. Smaller dogs were in the cages separate from the public--where mall pet stores keep their mill puppies. They seemed calm and were mostly asleep. Larger dogs were in crates in the middle of the floor, looking terrified and barely interacting with anyone. A few had urinated in their crates, which no one seemed to notice or care about. I thought perhaps they were just brought here for the day, then taken to kennels or foster at night, but a volunteer confirmed that they are living in those conditions! She told us that they don't stay long, so not to worry--but then said that a particularly sad looking lab had been there for two weeks. When we asked about particular dogs personalities, behaviors, etc. staff had no idea and said we could look them up on the website. (Sigh) I will not adopt from this organization. read more

Five stars for all the volunteers' attempts to decrease the number of pets in kill shelters, care for them and get them into a loving home. One star for the operators who falsify pet history and refuse to assist in remediation of pet issues. Many of these pets have been put down or passed off to another agency or individual. Ask the vets who care for 11th Hour's animals. NJ needs laws to make you accountable for your lack of integrity and ethics. No amount of dedication and love I provided for my dog could prevent her demise. At least she is at peace, but my heart is broken. No good deed goes unpunished. read more

**I am a junior volunteer, so I witness what goes on everyday** I find it sad that so many of you are giving this place a poor rating, they are so successful, they're opening their fourth location in the Roxbury Mall today, and they were able to get into the Rockaway Townsquare! They got to be doing something right. No offense, but some of you guys are giving low reviews for the dogs "looking sad in their crates", "them sleeping", "them urinating in their crates", and "dogs are inside the glass so people can't interact with them" I find those reviews sad. All this stuff, you can easily fix. If they look sad in their crates, give them attention and love. If they're sleeping, they're sleeping. If they urinate in their crate, tell an employee. If you want to see a dog, ask an employee to show you one. It's all so easy to fix. The employees are so nice, and are so kindhearted by using up their own personal time, to help find these dogs a furever home. The dogs at the kennel are so loving once you get to know them. The only reason they have trouble finding a home, is because of the previous owners abusing them, and making an impression that humans are mean. That's the only reason they are how they are. I know of so many dogs that have made such a big transformation from when they first stepped into the kennel. I also think this place is awesome, because it's a non-profit organization. All the money goes to their charity "Building Hope". The tips that you give, do so much. Every dollar counts. The Roxbury location is opening this morning, it used to be an Electronics Expo. The location is so big, and is two times bigger than the kennel. The volunteers and employees have done so much to get this place open, you should've seen how it looked three weeks ago. There were outlets everywhere, and holes in the wall where wires would be installed. Now EHR added a whole new purpose of the space, redoing some flooring, painting almost every room, building tons of crates from scratch. They do so much for these dogs, and Roxbury is just another example how. The events EHR holds is for their charities and for their dogs. My personal favorite events are the Garage Sale at Building Hope, and Puptoberfest at Lake Horseshoe which always features a performance by bands. Even New Jersey's Rock Station WDHA comes every year, it's always a good thing to go to, especially when you look at the adoption list to see how many dogs were adopted that day. You see a ton of dogs adopted. This place has accomplished so much, that's why I am giving them a 5-star review. read more

All the staff I had in contact with via email, phone, store, adoption event were just very very accommodating.They were all pleasant. Of course I am so thankful that I have met my lovely basset hound beagle mix Bailey through them. 11th hour rescue coordinated with another rescue in Georgia and they transported my Bailey. It was one of the most memorable days for me as a new dog mom. I will never forget the day I picked her up and the volunteee was so nice and explained all the paperwork to me very well. I love my dog! Thank you guys for a perfect match! We piked one dog from photo, and in the process we were advised to chose from other dogs. It were very helpful. We received about 7 more dogs profiles and there was Billy. He was the only dog we saw in person and it was a perfect match. Honestly, he was much more shy and nervous in kennel. When you meet a dog for the first time, you have to realize they spent a LOT of time in cages. They don't get normal exercise, they are bored. Another words they are not truly themselves there. After couple of weeks of home, soft bed, love and long walks Billy truly bloomed. Some time after his foster mom called to inquire and give us advise if we needed any. It was very sweet. Applicants Beware: We filled out an application for a dog we were already familiar with. After referrals, our app was put on hold and another family who were in before us had a meet and greet. Ok I get it we're next in line. Meet and greet doesn't work out for that first family, we're next great. I sent emails back and forth so they were aware of exactly which dog we were interested in and why. I explained how much we wanted to give this dog a warm loving forever home. Next day I Spoke with a very nice gentleman about our other pets (2 cats) not current in Rabies. Told him we switched vets 3 years ago and lost track of time. Took a vacation day off from work and Made an appt for the next day and told him the time of that appt. and he assured us he would call right after to confirm and then we would be on our way to an approval and meet and greet. The Day of our vet appt ( after I took off a day of work) we find out the nasty manager in charge of applicants, Donna , scheduled a meet and greet for another family for the same dog. I sent n email stressing my concern and disappointment and never got a reply. I will NEVER EVER refer any of my friends to this place again. It's a real shame but the management is a bunch of bullies who feel they can play God with these precious dogs and families. I have adopted 3 dogs and 3 cats in the past 15 years and never ever had to go through the stress, disappointment and rudeness that I went through at the Randolph 11th Hour Rescue. I'm sure there are some good stories. But unfortuntrly ours is not. I don't blame the dedicated workers there everyday caring for these dogs but I do blame the uneducated and unprofessional management. It's a shame but I don't see it ever changing. Good news is there are many other good shelters that we can go to for adoptions. I still would never buy a dog or cat. Regardless I will always adopt. I adopted a puppy and within 5 days she was very ill with parvovirus. She needed to be rushed to the vet and has been on IV fluids and receiving 24/7 vet care. The 11th hour started to pay for treatment on Friday, but have not yet agreed to reimburse expenses from Monday on, totaling 1,350. This doesn't include the 425 adopt fee. Although I called and emailed them since the very beginning Monday 11/20 the manager states that I did not call them right away and notify them. Even though I sent screen shots of my cell phone call logs, and all the emails, they still haven't agreed to cover the full expenses from the first day. The manager Ashley said that I have to talk to Linda. Linda hasn't called or responded to emails either. The worst part is the dog would have died if I waited the 4 days to hear back from 11th Hour before seeking medical treatment, as they advise. There is a chance that the dog won't survive this illness and it's highly contagious. I fear for the other animals that came in contact with my sick dog. I am heartbroken for my 8 year old daughter who is devastated. I really hope the 11th Hour compensates me for the bill and shows their appreciation to me for saving this dog's life. Ignoring people and not responding is poor leadership and it is completely inexcusable when lives are at stake. I guess they hope that eventually people will just give up and handle things on their own. I get the feeling that once the adoption occurs and they post the cute picture on Facebook, they want nothing to do with you or the dog. They ask for updates on Facebook #pupdates but only if they are happy updates. They wouldn't post my #pupdate pic of my dog in the hospital hooked up to an IV while my daughter pets the dog crying. read more

But this place made me go through a ridiculously detailed adoption process only to be talked down to and then declined. I would think they would be more than happy to get one of their animals out of their cages and give it to a family eager for a pet, but no. You can read the adoption application questions on their website - You will need to provide two references, a history of all pets you've ever owned, and proof of getting your previous pets vaccinated, if you even stand a chance from "rescuing" one of these animals. My cat was vaccinated 15 years ago, and I don't still have that paperwork. But that's not good enough. This process is only going to deter people from adopting and point people more towards pet stores. I thought you'd want to actually help animals and discourage the bad practices of pet stores. Great job guys. Your slogan is "their only crime is they our out of time"? Okay, so why are you wasting more time? You should be happy about anyone willing to take one of these animals in. read more

They make it nearly impossible to adopt a dog! Like a previous reviewer said, you would think they did not need anyone to adopt their dogs. My husband and I feel incredibly defeated as were denied THREE different dogs in 2 weeks! We filled out an application which was finally approved after we spoke in person to the most condescending, nasty woman in the adoption center at the Rockaway Mall. They denied us the dog we put down on our application because he required a "companion animal" we did not have. Fine... We perused their website again and immediately fell in love with another dog in a foster home. The process through the foster was like pulling teeth. Scheduling a meet & greet was incredibly painful and slow. I practically had to chase the foster mom down to get a response via email and phone on directions for next steps. She did not call me when she said she would. When we finally spoke on the phone she had reservations because we did not have a fully fenced in yard (I explained we had plans of completing the fence in the spring when the ground was not so hard) and also because we did not have another dog, even though it never specified on this dog's bio he needed a companion. We went through with the meet & greet anyway as the foster stated she still wanted us to meet the dog and had not made a decision yet. I opened my home to her and her fiancé for over 2 HOURS and we chatted with no mention of anything negative during the meet. The dog got along fabulously with my mom's dog and he made himself completely at home the entire time he was in our house. I even have a photo of him laying comfortably in his "spot" on the landing of our stairs. I respectfully gave the foster and her fiancé time to mull it over and texted her the following morning asking when a decision would be made. Again, no response and my text was ignored all day. At 6pm that day, I called a manager at eleventh hour (Irene) who was very nice and apologetic that there was some "feet dragging" happening. She advised she would reach out to the foster to give me an answer. After being strung along for 2 weeks, we were finally given an answer and denied that we were not a good fit given the fence situation. Even though this poor dog has been shared multiple times on their websites with no interest for months! Everything else for us as adopters checks out and we have a beautiful quiet home and yard! I have grown up with dogs my whole life and my husband and I would be perfect dog parents. This poor dog still needs a forever home and they can't look past the fact we don't have a completely fenced in yard installed yet? Ridiculous! Wouldn't you rather see the dog adopted? Zero sense of urgency for the placement of their dogs. The foster looked into another similar breed dog from their agency and stated that one also required a fenced in yard. Denied again. Strike 3! I feel they just want to "fence shame" and nitpick you for everything. We will be going to St. Hubert's to adopt our dog where they have same-day adoptions, no fence requirements and you don't have to jump through hoops to do a good thing by rescuing a pup. I will never use Eleventh Hour Rescue again after this experience. read more

I had applied to adopt a dog. My application was approved, however the runaround I was put through after was incredible. One would think they really don't need people to adopt their dogs. It involved multiple unanswered emails right after the 'approval', so shockingly the dog I wanted was no longer available. Good enough, he found a home. I picked another dog and same situation, multiple emails not answered, forwarded from one person to the next to the next. Few dogs I picked were adopted already then few dogs I picked were deemed 'inappropriate' for me. Fine, I was looking for a dog that is good with cats. Finally I described the type of dog that I would like (very broadly, shepherd looking, young or a puppy, good with cats) and asked if they would recommend a dog based on that. I was met with a flat out no and sent back to the website. I stopped trying and got a dog from another shelter. read more

I went with Eleventh Hour to adopt a new cat after hearing so many good things about this rescue. The adoption process was straightforward and was not at all drawn out. They asked appropriate questions and did their research (such as calling my vet) to make sure that we would be suitable adopters. I really appreciate that they took the time instead of just handing over animals to anyone who submits an application. Once we adopted our new cat, they checked in to make sure we were doing okay and even offered me advice with a small behavioral issue we were experiencing. Honestly I understand they're doing their best to save these animals and place them in the right homes, but I really think they may be too overwhelmed to run the rescue properly. I applied to adopt a kitten and two weeks later was approved. The kitten had already been adopted out (no big deal, obviously that's the goal of a rescue and I'm happy she found a loving family). I then emailed several times about another kitten I was interested and got no response for almost two weeks. I began calling every 3 days and leaving a voicemail. Finally after 3 weeks I received a call from the kitten's foster mom who had not been made aware til the day prior that I had even contacted or been interested in the kitten. I had a 10 minute conversation with the foster, was informed that she wasn't aware of anyone else with an application in for this kitten and then was told I'd be contacted back in a few days to set up a meet and greet so my fiancé could meet the kitten too. It's been well over a week now, I've left 2 voicemails and an email and gotten nothing back. This is going on 2 months of waiting and trying to nail down this rescue. Unfortunately I'm not willing to wait any longer. I understand they're busy but will be moving on to adopt from another rescue. Clearly there are not enough volunteers and no system in place to deal with the high volume of applications and the strict adoption requirements. read more

The emails between me and a supervisor in the shelter were pleasant! Let's fast forward. We go to Rockaway mall and without all the members of our house hold and are told to come back the next day or so. Which is understandable. Again, my application was approved weeks ago. I come back the next day - me and my children check out the pup we wanted - we are all good to go - and without explanation I am simply told by THE NASTIEST WOMAN I HAVE EVER MET IN MY LIFE that "they have questions on your app come back another day, i dont know what happened, but you cant get the dog". My children start to cry and so do I. No explanation, my application was already approved and I went the day before and everything was fine. I won't accuse them of discriminating or what have you but I don't get how the app was approved WEEKS AGO then ALL OF THE SUDDEN when they meet us physically, we are denied, just sayin. I stood there in shock, cried for a minute and left. AS SOON as I left I get an email saying my application was rescinded. Point blank period. Let us back up again and reiterate that the main woman in charge is beyond rude, most of the staff doesn't want to be bothered and often ignores its customers. After the lady told me I couldn't get the dog and there was no one to call, she proceeds to pick up the phone and call someone and talks about me OUT LOUD ON THE PHONE! I couldn't believe it. Whatever the reason was to deny us, we won't find out because they state they don't have to tell you. But let me tell you this, they are doing it wrong there. You do not tell someone they are approved, they get all excited, buy over @00 worth of dog items, bring your children, and then to be told umm na you can't do this. First of all, those dogs were free to your shelter, and I get that you have to house them, food, shots, etc. It costs money yes to have a shelter and I have respect for those who do it right. ANd i get these employees are volunteers, but if they love animals and HATE PEOPLE they shouldn't be working with EITHER! I felt very humiliated by this lady and I won't ever recommend this shelter because of the way I was treated. You can treat your animals like gold but people like dirt its sad and honestly, you have so many dogs that need homes but obviously its not as urgent as they make it out to be to get them adopted. Oh and FYI to 11th hour, if you don't want all these assumptions made by customers then maybe YOU SHOULD tell people why they are denied so you dont get a bad rep that you seem to already have! read more

For an organization that promotes such a happy mission, they do nothing to back it. The staff here at 11 Hour are incredibly condescending and judgmental. If your narrative doesn't directly align with what their 'ideal' adoptive family is, they don't even care to talk to you. They do absolutely nothing to uphold communication with families and flat-out, just do not care. Our family was nothing short of eager to adopt another dog to our family and to speak whenever possible with someone to make that happen. Not just the volunteers, but also the Owner, Linda, who we were also in contact with, fast-out refused to respond to any of our emails. How can you expect to have decent, respectful, and responsible volunteers, when the owner can't even uphold such a stance? There are so many other rescue shelters around that take more pride in their adoptive animals and are doing it out of genuine compassion--Eleventh Hour is not one of them. I highly recommend not wasting your time and looking at some of the other shelters. read more
