I tried the lemon bar and ended up getting it. They only have cups available, unless you want to pay more for a waffle cone, or coated sugar cone. That was a bummer since I like my scoop on a sugar cone. I liked my scoop but the color on it was a little off putting. I think it had too much food dye which it didn't need. My friends and I expected to quickly stop at this local coffee/ice cream shop to get a quick fix before ending our day. They have two lines: one for coffee and one for ice cream. It's a shame they neglect the people who are in line for ice cream, as my friends and I were standing there for 15 minutes while people were breezing through the coffee line. Not to mention, there were at least 4 workers in the back working on coffee. After one of the workers got done arguing with a customer over his coffee order, I had asked her if I could have a moment of her time (so we could order ice cream) and she ignored me. The customer service standard here is terrible. My friends ended up ordering matcha, to which the wait was incredibly long. After the long wait, my friend received her drink iced, even though she ordered a hot matcha latte (it also said hot on the ticket they gave her - weird). Another one of my friends who ordered ice cream was mistakenly charged double the price for one cone (obviously we got that fixed but still - annoying). Between the long waits, the messed up orders, and the ridiculous customer service encountered, would never come here again. I asked my friends how they liked their matcha and ice cream in hopes I wouldn't have to give a one star review but they said it was basic and mediocre. We stopped by because we were desperately craving matcha during our Big Bear trip, but perhaps our first mistake was trying to grab matcha at Big Bear. We had high hopes since they seemed to be intentional about their matcha choice (ceremonial matcha from Yujin Studios), and since Google Reviews described it as the best matcha in Big Bear (which I guess might have been true?). WHAT WE ORDERED: Fig matcha, oat milk, hot THE DRINK: It was very pale :( We had seen pictures online where the matcha was a bit darker, so we were surprised. Perhaps it was a bad day, but the inconsistency is enough for me to not want to give the matcha another shot. I could barely taste the fig either -- I wonder if they used a syrup or some other way to get at the fig. SERVICE: Service was good though. We had some questions and they were kind and answered them. VIBES: Pretty busy on a weekend evening, a line even! There was some seating available but they were all taken up. This was a cute coffee and ice cream place, stopped in for an ice coffee. The man working there took my order he was very nice. I ordered one coffee with regular milk and one with oat milk. I watched the young woman use regular milk for both. When she brought our drinks I explained I was allergic to dairy and saw she had used regular milk in both. She said she didn't, I told her I saw her use regular milk. She insisted that mine was oat milk. It definitely was not. I went Saturday morning for the first time as I saw that they sell matcha. WOW it was so delicious! I ordered an Iced matcha latte w/ oatmilk and one pump of vanilla (+ foam. I'm not sure exactly what it was but the worker recommended it). It was one of the creamiest matcha I have tried. We stumbled upon Ellies after seeing several people walk by with matcha lattes that looked quite rich in color. Unfortunately, the drinks and service really disappointed us and left a sour taste. DRINKS: -- Iced matcha latte with oat milk - The matcha taste doesn't come out very well and is heavily masked by the oat milk. I also use 4g of ceremonial matcha at home, so I think the quality of this matcha just isn't as rich. -- Black sesame houjicha - The hojicha flavor/quality felt a bit thin as well and you couldn't taste the black sesame. SERVICE: Now this is where my biggest gripe is. The menu for the black sesame houjicha clearly states "with your choice of milk", but when we requested oat milk the cashier blankly stared and said "the hojicha is made with water". We asked for a clarification pointing out the menu all she said was "No, we don't do that". When the drink came out, we could taste the dairy milk and given we're lactose intolerant, we needed to make the adjustment. We asked a worker if we could make the adjustment and in a condescending manner, they explained that hojicha needs to be made with water in order for the tannins to come out. I felt talked down on--I make these types of drinks myself at home and understand what he was trying to say, but we were simply addressing what is explicitly written on their menu. While they did end up remaking it with oat milk--which we happily paid the extra for--the whole interaction was really confusing and rude. I'd highly recommend visiting Ellie's Ice Cream & Bodega if you're ever in the mood for matcha, coffee, or ice cream since they offer all three options as well as efficient and good customer service. So far I've only tried the iced black sesame hojicha latte, the iced black sesame matcha latte, and the lemon bar ice cream, but I'm sure that all of their other options are just as delicious and high quality. In addition, I'm typically very particular when it comes to matcha lattes since I've had so many subpar ones in the past, but I love how balanced and not overly sweet it was, even though the matcha flavor was definitely on the more subtle side. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! Ice creams are good, but I absolutely do NOT recommend the matchas or iced coffees. The matcha tastes like straight milk and you can clearly tell it's NOT whisked properly because at the bottom you can literally see all the clumps of matcha powder sitting there. I also ordered the honey cinnamon iced coffee and it tasted absolutely horrible. They were clearly in a rush, and I understand places get busy, but that doesn't excuse ignoring customers. I stood in the Order Coffee Line for a good 15 minutes waiting to order and was completely ignored. While standing there, I noticed they were only taking orders from the Order Ice Cream Line, so I moved to that line just to try to order my drinks. After waiting another 5 minutes, the employee tells me, "If you're ordering coffees it's this line." I responded with, "Oh well I was standing there for almost 15 minutes and no one helped me, but ok." She just stood there quiet. That's what really irritated me. After all that waiting and being ignored, I finally get the drinks and they taste horrible and even slightly sour. For $15+, this experience was ridiculous. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. It's pretty obvious CUSTOMER SATISFACTION isn't a priority here. There are multiple negative reviews saying the same exact things, and the business doesn't even bother responding or trying to fix anything. That alone says everything. Ellie's, seriously do better. We arrived 2 hours before the store closed, but the worker prioritized cleaning all of the empty tables on the store for 5 minutes before bothering to come take our order. I'd understand this is we had come in 10 minutes before closing, but 2 hours before you should still be serving customers pretty quickly. The cashier / barista was very short, no pleasantries or conversation, but whatever. We ordered an iced hojicha with vanilla and oatmilk and an iced matcha latte the same way, both were WAY too sweet, like sickeningly so, and I say this as someone who is a fan of drinks on the sweeter side but this was just undrinkable. The drinks were maybe 8 ounces each and genuinely tasted like they were a third just syrup. Our drinks were also not mixed, came in the cup completely separated where we could see the syrup sitting at the bottom, not in a cute way. For the quality of the service and the drinks, the price was ridiculous. There's a ton of coffee shops in Big Bear Village, I would recommend visiting a different one. read more

My first issue is how the employee had long hair that dipped into the ice cream freezer.
