Its been six years since I wrote my review of Tosa Ace Hardware, which was shortly after they took over the long-standing, neighborhood hardware store Puhls Hardware. I was not happy with the way things were working there and said so. Now, years later, I can honestly say that they are much more organized and kempt. That being said, there are still some issues; i.e., like going in to not find everyday items I expected; certain hose bib size, specific type duplex receptacle and in late September/Early October, they were out of a common weed control product, Weed-B-Gone. I still go here regularly, though, and find it convenient because it is so close to the house and I don't have to travel to go to a big box (Home Depot/Lowes) and deal with the crowd, parking and size of the warehouses. So, all-in-all, the store is organized now and "mostly" has what knick-knacks I want with the occasional exception. read more

What you both served instead was an uncooperative and undesirable attitude that my husband did not deserve. What was the purpose of your negative attitude? Were you both trying to show my husband that he didn't belong? Maybe, you both should've called in today, because TODAY'S attitude was undeserved. This location used to be great. Helpful staff greeted you and helped you find whatever you needed. Ownership changed, and the culture changed with it. Today, they locked their doors early and mouthed "closed" through the door, despite a line of customers at the door, and importantly, it was not closing time yet. There was a poor elderly woman there that just needed to return a hose. Just a bad experience for at least a dozen customers, and untold lost revenue opportunity for the store. read more

Went to exchange my propane tank for a new one. My exchange tank was mostly full but for whatever reason the valve would not release propane. Only used it once or twice. I did not have a receipt. The store would not honor an exchange. I complained but bought another one anyway. Plus some glue. Cynthia at the store told me that if I didn't like the store's policy, I should shop somewhere else. Really, after shopping here, at this neighborhood store for the last 10+ years, I have to hear Cynthia tell me to go shop someplace else! Because I thought they should replace a propane tank that didn't work? Really Ace? read more

I was concerned about the live reindeer Wauwatosa Ace Hardware (and other businesses) use during the holidays. The reindeer are harassed, exploited, and confined to holiday displays. As a result, I sent a Facebook message to Wauwatosa Ace Hardware asking them to "Please stop using reindeer as attractions," and I get this as a response (see photo). I don't know why my initial message does not show, but they then proceeded to block me and that is why my reply back never went through. I was very shocked by this rude, unprofessional behavior from a store I love and frequent. Unfortunately, I (and my family and friends) will no longer visit this Ace Hardware. Twice in the past 4 months I have ordered products from the Ace Hardware website. In both cases I received an emailed confirmation of the order receipt, but was told not to come to the store to pick it up yet, as a follow-up email would be sent once the items were delivered to the store. The most recent incident began with an order I placed on 12/5/24, and today (12/19) I decided to just go to the store to see where my items were, even though I had not gotten an email to come pick them up. I was told by one of the warehouse men that the order was cancelled because I did not pick it up within 1 week of ordering it. When I informed him that my order confirmation told me to wait for an email to come pick it up he said that Ace Corporate is responsible for informing customers to pick up orders. I asked him how THEY would know if and when the items would be available for pickup better than the local store, and he said "we're not an Ace Hardware store. We're just a franchise." I said that the sign outside says Ace Hardware. He basically shrugged his shoulders and told me that he didn't have the time to contact customers for every time an order came in. I have had to deal with the manger3 times now. all 3 times he was extremely rude unwilling to answer my questions. I was told to us to read the instructions. He aways seems to be in too much of a hurry to help anyone. I also have watched with other customers. And the same thing he was rude and non-helpful!!!! They quoted a price on reel mower sharpening and then at pickup it was double the price. Manager wouldn't correct the issue. Everything in this store is way over priced. It's not the neighborhood store with staff who knows how to fix our old houses it used to be. Will drive elsewhere instead of going there again. read more

Even though Ace Hardware is a big, national chain, the folks who work at this Ace Hardware make me feel right at home. When I first walk in the front door, Marilyn, a kind cashier, welcomes me in and brightens my day. Then, as I get shopping, if I have any trouble at all, bumping into Bob is the best thing: I tell him my issue and he knows numerous great ways to address it. Also at a great price. Seeing him makes my day. Then, on a separate trip, I bumped into Tom. In no time he not only helped me find all of the things I needed, but he taught me the exact right brush to use for my task and explained why. Amazing. read more

This place has really gone down hill since switching from True-Value to Ace. It's very poorly managed. Constantly out of stock on a LOT of items. EVERY time I go here they're out of stock on something I had planned on buying. Do yourself a favor. Even though it's a longer drive, go to the Elliott's Ace Hardware near Bluemound and Moorland Rd. HUGE store (two floors) and they know how to keep items in stock. read more

I shop here from time to time and have found the staff to be consistently friendly and knowledgeable when I come in with random questions usually regarding paint, plumbing, electrical, or other home related topics. It has been that way before, during, and after Puhls. Today, they helped me find the right chain saw to address my post storm branch clean-up AND they showed me how to put it together and use it. I needed a couple of small light bulbs for a Halloween display. As near as I could tell the burned out bulbs had no clue on them as to what type or size bulbs they were. I went to the back of the store and Grace took one of the old bulbs and showed me where there was some extremely tiny identifying info on the base of the old bulb. She knew exactly what I needed as replacements and even offered a couple of alternatives. I was in and out of the store in just a few minutes and had exactly what I needed. I have shopped Aces for years . I am new to this area though and so this is a new "Ace" for me. for me Ace has been about helpful, knowledgeable people who can help guide me. While I know I pay for that service it is worth it within reason. My experience with this Ace has been very mixed. They don't seem to have the go to people employed to really be helpful consistently. For me th emost consistently good person has been Grace. Truly seems to want to help and generally does. But I have also experienced a middle aged man who looks and acts likes a hardware guy but has given me mostly bad advice or wrong answers. I go out of my way to avoid him now. The other big difference is they seem to be out of stock frequently. I don't know if this is trying to play to close to the vest investment wise or just poor management generally but it is very frustrating. I still go there but if it is at all convenient I tend to visit Ellliots in ElmGrove. While almost too big I get a better sense they are hardware people. I would love to stay local but they make it hard . read more

Add me to the list of locals that want to shop locally and have the convenience of a well-stocked hardware store but are consistently disappointed shopping here. They seem to lack of true hardware store items like outdoor rated outlet receptacles and plumbing parts. This would be more understandable if not for the huge areas dedicated to expensive grills and adorable home decor knickknacks with angels on them and so forth. The smaller local hardware stores more often have what you need without all that junk. Comments to store staff and ACE corporate are given the minimum answer to get you to shut up and go away so they can proceed with average selection and service. Done- I will shut up and go away to Blifferts or Downer True Value. read more

While I prefer to shop local, it will never be at this place again! I expected prices to be a bit higher and wasn't disappointed. The flush valve I came for was $12.99 (HD was $9.98 for same) and a can of spray paint was $4.59 ($3.98 @ HD). Tacking three bucks on a simple flush valve is a bit much, but that's not what drove me away. Neither did the confusing store layout. It was hard to find what I needed, but I figured that was intentional to get folks to wander around and buy stuff they don't need, like Ikea. Worked on me - the paint was an add-on purchase I stumbled across while looking for plumbing. Imagine my surprise when I heard some gray-haired Ace employee tell a co-worker he was keeping an eye on a potential shoplifter. I was the only other person in the area. When I stopped browsing and went to the register, I got the stare of condemnation from the guy watching me. The lady at the checkout asked about my shopping experience, so I relayed my concern about the weird profiling. She told me it was probably because of my mask. Seriously?! I did not see any precautions to prevent the spread of COVID in store. No cart sanitizing, no employees with masks, and now they think the ones who are being safe are criminals? No wonder no one shops at this place! read more

Because I believe in shopping local, I really want to like this business, but over the last year, since they've opened, each time I've shopped here (more than three but less than ten times) there is always some unpleasant aspect to my experience, always at the check out, and I leave telling myself I won't go back. I like the store's cleanliness and the available salesperson to ask any question. However, The attitude of everybody was not friendly. I felt like I was in the wrong place or there is something wrong on my face. You should know when I go to other places (Menard or home depot) I expect this kind of attitude because kids there don't care, and they spend their time avoid customers. However north port Washington and old ace hardware in downtown which closed now never had an unfriendly salesperson. So this store is the opposite of others, clean and organized but customer service sucks. I might have to use their store again if I have to and desperate. thanks for reading this. read more

I live nearby and have traded there for 38 years. It has never been my #1 go to store, as the selection is limited. However, I would definitely go there if I know they have the item I need and I am in the middle of a project. Sometimes I have even made larger purchases when the staff has been friendly and helpful. That is changing, as of now, due to my 2 most recent visits. I came to buy bagged garden products, which are displayed on skids in front of the store. Both times, the cashier was rude, hostile, did not listen to my request before flying off the handle, and acted as though I was an annoyance. She is an older lady, who really ought to know better. Then I had to lug the bags, by hand, though the parking lot to load my car. It may be inconvenient, but I am inclined to drive over to either of the Elliot's Ace locations nearby in the future. At least they are polite, capable of understanding my purchase request, and can arrange for convenient loading of my car. read more

I went to the store on a Sunday and bought a grill with my wife. I was told it would be delivered Tuesday I waited all day Tuesday no grill no call, Wednesday I called them and they call me back once and told me to call me back again and they did not call me back. Thursday came and I told him if it ain't delivered I'm returning it and it finally was delivered but 3 days sitting around waiting for this thing to arrive is ridiculous I will never shop at this place again. I would have given five stars if I had been allowed to use a restroom. I am from out of town and walked to the store. I was not allowed to use a restroom after a purchase and was forced too "find a grocery store" and walk there. Customers should be allowed to use a restroom. read more

I miss Puhls True Value and Robertson's Ace Hardware. It seems like there are less items to choose from and prices have gone up. I did not recognize one employee there. I wasn't greeted on the way in. There was no one asking me if I needed help finding anything. There were two cashiers working. One line was at least a dozen people long and the other cashier didn't call for the next in line. We just walked over to the empty register. I'm not impressed at all. It's still an okay place to stop in for random hardware, but don't expect the same friendly service. read more

No customers in this store, it's always slow to low activity. Few employees remained following the True Value to Ace change, but are all gone now. New employees have attitudes, prevents from assisting customers. Difficult to locate items following the remodeling, chaotic arrangments, diplayed too high, makes it impossible to read items; jambed in tight quarters; narrow aisles creates an on-top of another person who happens to be in same aisle. Out of stock for basic simple items It's peculiar, odd, unusual, non-smiling unpleasant, atmosphere & appears as reflection of newer present owners and longevity may be not in the cards. There are other negative postings, with similar observations, & are indicative of non-repeating business and/or consumer visits. Similar example would be a storm chaser! It's a shame that the area lost it's anchor, staple, asset, the Puhl family neighborhood hardware business, where everyone "knows your name". so I purchased a part for a faucet sold by Ace Hardware- online and in store. it was at an Ace not near my home, but I was guaranteed that the part, since it was from Ace and ordered through Ace to be delivered to a store, could be returned at ANY Ace. sadly, it did not fit, so I went to return it to Tosa Ace as directed by the Woodruff Ace. I was told that it cannot be returned- it wasn't sold at that Ace. Even with the original receipt. They don't take returns from other Ace stores- at least on items they don't sell... THIS WAY ORDERED THROUGH ACE! and could have been delivered to ANY Ace for pickup. I was told it's the owner's policy. SO this is NOT a true ACE Hardware- it has it's own rules apparently NOT associated with the national brand. BE WARNED! sad, as I've shopped there forever- never had a problem when it was Puhl's True Value.... now? I'll be unfortunately driving the extra miles to the Tosa Lowes. bitterly disappointed. read more
