I would recommend using ELM Insulation & Sound. The name is unique compared to what the business does (rodent proofing), but anyway, starting with Sean, who was very polite and knowledgeable about what needs to happen to keep my home recent proof. He explained the process, showed us other houses he has done and made us feel comfortable about the company being capable and competent enough to guarantee their work and remedy the problem. The office manager her name is Miriam. She was a huge help to. LADWP at the time were offering rebates for attic insulation and to surprise Miriam had no problem helping me navigate that process. I had a very good experience working with ELM. They installed a vapor barrier and new insulation under our house, cleaned the entire crawl space before the installation, replaced old/destroyed HVAC ducts, and rodent-proofed the crawl space. What set ELM apart from other contractors we spoke to were the individuals we worked with directly. Sean, who did our inspection, was very thorough (actually going into our crawlspace unlike other contractors), explained everything he saw in the inspection, explained all of the work he recommended, and gave us a very accurate estimate. The owner Eli was very responsive over the phone with calls and texts while the job was being done. And the team lead by David that did the installation was incredibly hardworking and did excellent work. The project was scoped for 1-1.5 days and it went to 2 days (there was a lot of cleaning in the crawlspace before the installation could start) plus some finishing touches on a third at no extra cost. I hired a general contractor who subcontracted to this company to perform a full attic insulation removal, cleanup, and HVAC ducting complete replacement. They could not have done a more terrible job, and I didn't find out until after all the work was done that no permits were pulled (not sure if that's ELM's fault or the contractor) and I also learned that ELM is not properly licensed to do HVAC work in the first place (requires a C20 classification on their license, which they do not have, they only have a C2 classification which is for insulation). The insulation job was horrible - there are hot spots around my entire house because they didn't push the insulation all the way to the edge. The ducting job was even worse - zero mastic used, only a few duct connections have zip ties, exposed metal wyes (already sweating moisture), some of the ducts are literally pulling away and leaking air. All of the wye connections are leaking conditioned air, none of the duct boots are insulated. Oh, and in a bunch of places all they used was literal duct tape - which isn't even up to code. The only positive I can say about them was the crew was extremely professional in their interactions with me and very friendly. They got all the work done in about 7 hours - but that may also explain why it was such a poor job. I've now had to have a different company, with the proper license classifications come out to redo the majority of their duct work. As for the insulation, I guess I'll just have to hire someone else to fix that as well. read more

I found ELM Insulation & Sound on Yelp while looking for a company to install insulation in my attic. I was impressed by the number of 5 star reviews they had, but more importantly by the respectful manner in which the company's owner responded to clients. The owner, Eli, responded to my inquiry the same day (Sunday) and sent someone (Tommy) to give me an estimate 2 days later. The price quoted was great, and considerably less than my neighbor paid to have the same work done by another company, so I agreed to work with ELM Insulation. I wanted to be eligible for a LADWP rebate on the work so I showed Tommy, the representative that I'd been working with, all of the LADWP's requirements including getting a permit and passing a LADBS inspection. He assured me that the work done by ELM would pass inspection. When I spoke with Eli, the company's owner, I asked him to add to our contract that I would pay the 10% deposit before the start of work, 80% upon completion, and the final 10% only after the work passed inspection. He was fine with that arrangement. The workers came the next day and did very professional high quality work. They cleaned debris out of the attic, sealed any openings in order to rodent proof the space, installed the insulation, put new wire mesh on all vent access points around the perimeter of the house and over the vents on the roof, and cleaned up after themselves. Miriam, who works in their office, sent me everything I need for my rebate: copy of the permit, the estimate / the contract, the before and after pics, and the product specs. On the day of the inspection, Tommy arrived just before the inspector and brought the required ladder for the inspector to use, AND MY ATTIC INSULATION WAS APPROVED! Like many right now, we had to deal with remediation after the Eaton fire, which is an overwhelming process involving insurance and restoration companies, along with so many unknowns about safety. We decided to hire insulation removal and replacement on our own and within two days, we had our attic HEPA cleaned (there was a lot of ash and our existing insulation was looking pretty sad) insulation removed and reinstalled, as well as in our crawl space. We had to get our whole attic newly insulated and get new vents for the AC this summer. Sean promptly arrived for the inspection and gave us a quote within that day. He was very friendly, approachable, and responsive. Come the day of installation, everything went smoothly for the most part. The only thing was that we had some small debris that fell out of the AC vents (our house is old so that attic was very dusty) so just make sure you either remove things from underneath the vents and/or make sure the team covers that up prior to beginning the installation. The team vacuumed the whole attic before the installation, covered up all holes and crawl spaces both inside the attic and outside the house to prevent any rodents from entering. Once the work was done, I received all of the before and after photos, which showed the quality of work they provided. They were all hard working and kind people. My attic had lots of rat poop and an old beehive. The rat poop was there a long time ago before I moved in, but recently a new rodent (I think it was a rat) has moved in and I can hear it running around in the attic at night. So I HAD to get this fixed. I called ELM insulation to come in to remove and replace all the old insulation that was covered in rat poop and pee, sanitize, and since they were up there they removed the old asbestos wrapped air ducting.
