I visited Elsie once, when I was having issues with my regular stylist and wanted to test my options. I booked an appointment online, and was required to enter a credit card number to make a deposit, and agree to the cancellation policy of being on the hook for the full cost of the service if I was a no-show. This was a first for me after nearly two decades in New York. But I showed up, as scheduled, on my appointed Saturday at around noon. Oddly, I was the only person in the salon other than the stylist, who did not seem aware of my appointment. The salon was not as light and airy as the website pictures would make it seem; it was a little worn, but nothing terrible. People had mentioned being provided with adult beverages in reviews, but I only saw a few dusty, opened bottles in a corner, and was not offered anything. But again, I had gone there to get a keratin hair treatment. The stylist did her thing in applying the treatment. I was a little suspicious that she was applying it with a spray bottle, as every other application that I've had or seem has been with a brush. I asked the question and the stylist seemed a little bit defensive. (I'm not a hair expert, but lots of people have first time jitters when working with a stylist for the first time). But the finished product was fine and I left a tip. I had a bit of a surprise when I returned home to find an email indicating that I had been a no-show for the appointment, reminding me of the cancellation policy, and offering me a chance to reschedule. I actually checked online to ensure that I had not mistakenly visited the wrong salon, as I was literally the only person there for 2 hours, before responding to advise of the error. I later reconciled with my regular hair dresser and never went back. read more

I'm not use to writing review, but have to so that others know my experience with this salon. Happened to discover this salon this past spring. Went for a hair cut for myself and it wasn't great but okay. The latina hairstylist to right was polite but appeared inexperienced. Whats more important is that my daughter was with me and wanted to get her hair wash and blow dried. That first time for wash and blow dry the hairstylist yo the left by window, also latina but lighter complexioned, washed and blow dried my daughters long hair. I was given a price of 40 and tipped the stylist 5 dollars. When we went again the following week the 2nd time the stylist rudely complained to the woman by register in my presence about having to do my daughters hair and not being paid sufficiently... I thought it was so unprofessional and rude but i understood that my daughter has waist long curly (loose non coarse) hair and know that's its a lot of work. So i figured if i tipped her more than 5 dollars she would be happy but i was wrong. The woman by register apologized to her and said it was her fault that she failed to give me wrong price the first time i went with daughter. I was initially charged 40 then on this occasion, 45. I didn't want to challenge it so i paid the 45. It should be noted that washing and blow drying daughters hair was under 1 hour.... I ended up tipping stylist 10dollars thinking she was going to be happy next time we came but i was wrong. The 3 and last time i went the same hair stylist gave us a dirty look and again complained to woman by register how its hard to do the hair and complained about the length. I was shocked because i didn't see her complain about anyone else in having to do their hair... And besides i tipped her 10 dollars the week before. I also saw woman with coarse thick hair come in to get a wash and set or blow dry and although they had short hair stylist and i didnt see her complain... Their demeanor was unprofessional and unacceptable. I had also observed another patron come in to get a ambre done on her hair only to walk out when done and return in less than 15 minutes to complain how it wasn't don't correctly in the back of her hair... It was a horrible experience and i would not recommend the salon to anyone. I am happy to say that my daughters long beautiful hair now gets dine at a local salon in the same neighborhood where we are welcomed, get great service and where the prices are not changed up in us and where the owner and stylist are professional. 10/10 Excellent customer service and excellent work. My hair was dull and lifeless, and Elsie and Yoselin brought it back to life! I purchased an online deal and was nervous about going to a salon that I didn't know about, but upon entering, I knew I had made the right choice. I walked in to inquire on a haircut for my long, really thick hair. Elsie quoted me at $70 which is what is advertised on her price list, so I came back later to get my hair cut drastically shorter than what I walked in with. She shampooed and conditioned my hair and the hairstylist (Gemma? Didn't catch how to spell her name) asked me what I'd like and started on my hair. She did a great job and when I gave feedback on additional thinning I'd like done, she gave her honest opinion but did as I requested. I'm very happy with my haircut! However there were three points that led to me giving a 4 Star instead of 5: 1. No products were used on my hair. Like none- not even heat protectant when blowdrying my hair. Or Moroccan oil after it was finished, which I'm used to at salons. My hair is thick and durable so it's not an issue for me, but I can see this being a problem if you have fine and delicate hair. I usually go to a place in Hell's Kitchen that charges $45 a haircut and they do use products, so I found it a little odd. 2. The postcard at the cash register advertises a 25% off first time visit. When I inquired about it after my haircut, Elsie said I can use it on my next visit. This is fair since I intend on coming back for a balayage treatment which is much more expensive than a haircut, and Elsie said that it would be honored; however still a little awkward to not be given it on my actual first time visit. Perhaps I'll update this to 5 stars if my discount is honored on my next visit! 3. I asked Elsie how much I owed at the register and she told me $70 , and I added $20 tip so a total of $90. She confirmed $90 and then processed my credit card and the slip was for $97 and change. Now I know the additional amount is tax, but typically it's customary to inform the client of the total amount to be charged so it's not a surprise when signing the sales slip. This point combined with #2 was a little shady and made me uncomfortable. That being said, besides those points, I'm very satisfied and tipped big because my hair is not easy and the cut took about an hour because I have a lot of hair. read more

Had a great experience and my hair turned out exactly as I wanted. My hair had at least 3 different shades of brown. I asked Elsie to dye my hair all black. She fixed my hair color and it looked even throughout . I went to the hair salon on the Saturday and needed it styled for a wedding on Sunday. Josephine styled my hair. She pinned my hair up so that when I let it down for the wedding, the curls looked fresh. I will definitely be coming back. They were professional, prompt and efficient. I have been getting my hair highlighted by Elsie for the last 4 years and she is by far the best colorist I have ever had. She has made me the perfect blonde and that is no easy task!! I have lived in London, Minneapolis and DC and been to many salons and stylists and Elsie is hands down the best. She is now a colorist to many of my friends and they swear by her work. And even better, I have now gotten the best haircut I have had in years from Urmila at Sparkle Beauty Parlor. I have very curly thick hair and it usually takes stylists several cuts to get it right. After all I want to say that I'd look for a hair salon close by to my place and choose this one for the good pictures I found online site. obviously you look for the best look of the place inside. After that I call to go and visit the same day but it was full and I needed an appointment instead, so I say thank you cuz I couldn't make an appointment any time sooner, but the point here is that the lady talked to me she were very nice to me and wanted me to come by when i desire it and call back soon to schedule an appointment. Several days later like 2 days ago for the very first time went to this place everything was like the photos in the website very clean and nice. Good attention peaceful place where you can relax also. i went only for a wash and blow dry. this men that did my hair was very gentle with my hair very nice finally at the end I couldn't more satisfied with his work. my hair is very curly and he finished it very straighten shiny ans smooth very happy. for me the price is perfect cuz everything accomplish with the professionalism that this place is. The great hair salon hunt continues, this place fell flat. I bought a Groupon and tried this place out. It was easy enough to make an appointment...salon is tiny and clean, and the stylist did a good job with the cut. Now my complaint: I woke up and it was a zillion degrees and my hair was a wreck. Jumped in the shower and half-assed washed my hair since I knew I was getting my hair done. Fast forward an hour and a half later, I get there...the stylist notices my wet hair and asked if I washed it. I guess I should have said "Yeah but wash it again anyway?" because at no point did she offer. Hair is cut, we get to the blowdry and she notices that my hair is greasy and offers to wash it. (Did I leave shampoo in, who knows...) and I take her up on it. She redries it and then informs me it will be an additional $10 because she had to blowdry my hair again. WTF? I was backed into the corner at that point...if she had informed me of this when she offered to wash my hair I may or may not have declined...but it would have been nice to have the option to do so, which is what annoyed me. On the plus side the scalp massage was awesome, but ugh...just be up front with people. I wouldn't be so irritated if she had said "Let me rewash your hair, I'll have to charge you an extra $10 to blowdry it again." Aside from that, the experience was nice...which is why I won't be one of those douchey reviewers who gives one star for some percieved slight. Lesson learned, speak up to begin with I guess. Since I travelled a ways (I live in Riverdale, it's sort of a pain to get to the east side without a couple transfers) and wasn't completely impressed...I probably won't be back, even though sans Groupon the prices seemed relatively cheap. read more

I walked into Sparkle and it was love at first site. Elsie and her team are super. I was greeted with wine and a classy, clean, friendly environment. They dyed my hair, gave me a great trim all the while enjoying great banter from the staff and other customers. The price was fair and I have to say I have been receiving non stop compliments on my cut...also my aggressive grays have stayed away for a record time so they are doing something right. Don't go here seeking balayage! The salon advertises for balayage highlights but Elsie did not seem to know what they were. Instead of the technique utilizing teasing and specific placement of two tones that I've seen my regular stylist do (I just moved here from out of state), I received regular highlights just about an inch from the root, which look more like a mistake than the balayage I'm used to receiving. I'm sure Elsie is very skilled in color otherwise but if you're seeking an experienced balayage technician, this is not the place. read more

My friend suggested I come here for braiding, and I'm SO glad I took her advice! My whole experience was quick, comfortable, and the braids are beautiful! I'll be back here again and again and again! UPDATE: When I called to again schedule hair braiding, the woman on the phone quoted me a price that was $25 dollars higher than the first time I had my hair braided here. When I asked why, she said she remembered me and my hair was longer than she originally thought..? My hair is not very long (falls between my shoulder blades), and regardless, it's surprising that the difference in length would result in a $25 price increase. Their prices seem to either be random or deceitful. Going with three starts because of this. read more

I wanted to love this place. I bought a LivingSocial for a single process color, cut, and style. I took that to mean I would be getting my whole hair dyed one color, but when I arrived, the owner (she didn't give me her name) said that my voucher was only valid for a root-touch up. My hair isn't dyed so there are no roots to be touched up. Apparently there was a mix-up and the price I paid was only applicable for a root touch-up. She kept trying to tell me that a single process color IS a root touch-up, which I know to be untrue. The owner told me she'd have to charge me an extra $50 and asked if I wanted to do that. I really didn't have a choice as I had already bought a voucher and I had gone out of my way to get to the salon. Later, the owner said she felt bad that I didn't know about the mix-up and didn't feel comfortable charging me extra. I really appreciated that and was grateful she cared enough about a customer to waive the extra $50! I showed the woman a picture of the color I wanted and she went to work straight away. I'm not sure what kind of dye this was, but it kept dripping down the side of my face. I used to dye my hair every 3 months, so I know this is unusual. Although it was itchy, it didn't stain my face, so it wasn't that big of a deal. What IS a big deal, is that my hair doesn't look dyed at all! Other than a slight, SLIGHT tint directly under sun light, it looks the same. No one has noticed. The cut was performed by the girl, who shampooed my hair (she also did not introduce herself). I showed her a picture and she seemed to understand. She had a really interesting cutting technique that I'd never seen before. She twisted the hair and then cut it. I asked for more layers, but the layers look choppy and don't blend in well. I'm not normally picky about my cuts. I usually let the stylists do whatever, but this time, I had something specific in mind and she didn't deliver. I would have mentioned this to her, but I couldn't tell because she had styled my hair with bouncy curls on the bottom. As for the color, I didn't say anything because I felt like I shouldn't complain because she wasn't charging me extra. Although I was not satisfied with my hair, both people who worked on me were very kind. Later, I overheard her speaking to another customer about a cut that would frame her face and how to make low lights blend in more. She's really knowledgable and will suggest what she believes is best for you hair. I really did appreciate her not charging me extra, but the bottom line is that I paid $50 for a cut and color and my hair doesn't look colored. Now, I've exposed my hair to the damage of dying it, without any results. And I'm going to have to get my cut fixed. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon spent here today having my hair highlighted, washed, cut and blow dried. The staff were extremely competent and friendly and put me completely at my ease. They listened to my ideas and made some excellent suggestions which ended up with me being one very happy customer. I was greeted like a friend on my arrival, despite this being my first visit, and was immediately was shown to a salon chair and offered a beverage. Elsie (the delightful owner who was originally trained in Paris before moving to NYC many years ago) then got to work straight away, expertly highlighting my long blonde hair (now much blonder thanks to her!) She really took her time to over it, checking the sections regularly to ensure they were not being overdone and washing off any "done" sections as required. She then recommended a hair treatment to nourish the hair after colouring (which she didn't charge me any extra for - a big change from everywhere else I've been in NYC to that force you to pay extra for "toner" or because "you have a lot of hair") Her sweet colleague Jocelyn then cut my hair really well, shaping it nicely around the face and taking her time to really ensure it was perfect. Her blow dry was really awesome and she managed to make my usually poker straight hair curl slightly at the ends looking like Kate Middleton's?! I would thoroughly recommend this super cute salon to anyone wanting an excellent result at an incredible price by staff who really know their stuff and care about making each customer truly happy with their experience. I don't know where to start to describe the experience I had at Elsie Beauty Parlor, but in one word- INCREDIBLE! Joselin is a genius stylist and I got a Brazilian Keratin Treatment that left my hair shiny, bouncy and full of volume. The owner Elsie is amazing and takes great care of her customers, even offering wine and beverages. They use Natural & Organic products and are worth every penny! I went for the first time today and I'll be back next week! Elsie and GiGi were so sweet and kind when I first walked in. Elsie gave me a great shampoo and GiGi did an amazing blowout. I'd gone to another salon the past few weeks and while the ladies there were very nice, they put too much product on my hair and it felt really dry by the end of the week. Another plus for Elsie's is that the salon is stylish and clean. I have naturally curly hair that, when straightened, is nearly to my brastrap and I was in and out under and hour. Went yesterday for the first time for a blowout. It's a super cute place, did a great job shampooing and the price is great 35 for a blowout, plus a $5 discount from Yelp. The proprietor was super nice and was very clear she wanted all her customers to be happy and comfortable. All the makings of a secret gem. The only downside was the actual blowout, I asked for waves with a lot of volume and bounce. I got flat stick to my scalp oily straight hair, with a flip at the bottom, that fell after a minute, it also took the poor girl over an hour for everything. Had to go home and spend 20 minutes to fix it. Maybe I'll try them again in the hopes of getting a better stylist ? read more

I went to Sparkle for the first time to get my poor, dead, and sad hair cut and dyed. I'm so glad I came here! Elsie and her team took great care of me and really went the extra mile. I hadn't been to a salon in like a year and also I had fried my hair by doing multiple bleaches at home, but she was able to bring my hair back from the dead and make it beautiful again. I totally trusted her skills in coloring my hair since I didn't even know what to do with it. It turned out great! I also got a cut and a blow-dry style, which was also really fab. I went in with an online deal but even so, they took extra care of me for like two and a half hours and went above and beyond the services I had actually paid for. The team is super friendly and welcoming, too. It was really well-run for a place that has only been open for ~3 months, and I hope Sparkle remains in the neighborhood for a long time! read more
