I'd like to start by giving a huge shout out to the entire hospitality team who worked on the night of our visit (April 23, 2022). From the valet, to the host, to the man who served us our water, to our main server for the night-- everyone was extremely welcoming, professional, and incredibly good at their job. Living in this weird COVID era can be a true test of comfort levels. I will come out and say that I personally still don't feel all that comfortable walking into a room full of people I don't know without a mask on. So naturally, when we walked into this restaurant, I had one on. At no point did I ever discuss with the host any specific seating requests with that in mind, because while the idea of being seated amongst a crowd makes me anxious, having to voice that concern to someone fills me with even more dread, because I know it's not always a simple ask. But I didn't have to say a thing at all. They sat us in the main dining room where the closest table was well beyond six feet from us, and directly across from us was a door to the outdoor seating area, which they kept open for the entirety of our stay. They truly went above and beyond to make sure that we felt safe and comfortable, and I really took notice and appreciated that. My partner and I arrived early for our dinner reservation, so we decided to grab drinks at the bar while we waited for our table. The host quickly checked us in and showed us to their spacious bar. I ordered The King & Rye (not pictured), which is their take on a Whiskey Sour. It came served in a massive glass goblet and I immediately downed the whole thing, it was delicious. If you love a sour, I would recommend. Once we made it to the table, we started with a couple glasses of wine and were then served complimentary garlic croissants. Loved that! They were buttery, flaky, and of course garlicky-- all the things a croissant should be. And then we ordered: - Grilled Shishito Peppers - Smoked Salmon "Delmonico" - Bone Marrow - Crispy Onion Blossom - Roasted Cauliflower "Pot Roast" - Snow Crab Bucatini We were very happy with everything, but my favorite of the night was definitely the Bone Marrow. I love al pastor, I love sweetbreads, I love bone marrow, and I shouldn't have been so surprised that the three combined would taste so good, but I was blown away. What's more, is that it comes with a delicious salsa macha on the side, and our server suggested holding onto the leftover salsa and adding it to our crab bucatini. I have to say, she was spot on. The dish on its own was great, but adding the salsa macha took it to another level. The heat cuts through the richness of the dish very nicely, much more than the jalapeño. I'd also like to point out that we were very surprised by the portion sizes of our food (in a good way), the crab bucatini especially. They thoughtfully brought it to our table already split into two large plates for us, and every inch of that pasta was generously covered in snow crab. Since we were expecting smaller plates but were pleasantly surprised by quite the opposite, we unfortunately didn't save room for dessert this time around. Came here for dinner last night after we checked into the Park Hyatt Aviara. We had the oyster and pearls, beet salad, shishito peppers, boneless rib eye, Chilean sea bass, and the kids meals the fish sticks and grilled cheese with fries. Everything was very good especially the rib eye, sea bass and the beet salad. Service was top notch. We will definitely be back to try more dishes on the menu. Huge DISAPPOINTMENT! The food was underwhelming, wildly overpriced, and we were possibly seated at THE worst table inside the restaurant with no view except to the back door and the outdoor grill. They charge you for everything...even the ice in your drink. $2.00 for a Cube of ice or $3.00 for a Sphere of ice, $5.00 for a tiny ramekin of Horseradish, $3.00 for an extra small Croissant, $5.00 for Valet, and on their website they claim to even add an 18% gratuity, in addition. Get ready to spend over $150 per person w/o a bottle of wine for sub-par pricey food. Don't get me wrong, we love to splurge and through down from time-to-time but this experience was below average, at best, for an acclaimed celebrity chef's collaboration, Richard Blais, as well as the connection to Juniper and Ivy and the Crack Shack, two places we really enjoy. It was our 10 year anniversary, had reservations, and were hoping for a special evening of culinary exceptionalism. We purposefully did not read reviews to be swayed one way or the other. Three things were good, however, the valet, our server, and the 28-day dry-aged ribeye steak. The valet was a nice guy, our server was new but a good guy, and the steak was overpriced but delicious. We ordered: Drinks, Squash Blossoms, Shishito Peppers, Hamachi Crudo, Beet Salad, Crab Avocado, Corn Cream Brûlée, 32oz 28-Day Dry-aged Ribeye Steak, Fries, additional Croissants, and anticipated dessert. I ordered the Crab Avacodo as an entree. The server got my order wrong (not a big deal) and served me the Dungeness Crab Bucatini pasta instead of the Avo dish. He took the pasta back and got the avo shortly after. The Crab Avo dish was SHOCKING to see. It was a very small whole avocado, dusted in black lime salt, stuffed with maybe two tablespoons of crab. It looked like a shriveled and burnt large egg, rolled in ashes, sitting alone with no garnish on an oversized plate served at room temp. It was not appetizing at all and bland tasting. I hesitantly sent it back. The pasta that was brought by mistake looked 1000x better so I chose to order it. Another shocker...the very SAME plate of pasta that was mistakenly served to me was given back to me! It was congealed, cold and the pasta was hard as cement. I had to send it back as it was inedible, although we did try. Meanwhile, my husband was chowing down on his giant 32oz steak and side of fries. I opted out of reordering another dish and my husband kindly shared his steak with me. We had ordered the Corn Cream Brûlée, categorized as a vegetable, as a side dish as everything is à la carte. Not only was it served cold, but it also came in a modest ramekin that was only half-full giving way to only four teaspoons full of food for the two of us to share. We sent it back to be warmed and it came back burnt but we still ate it. There is nothing "veggie" about this side, it's more like a dessert. As far as dessert, we were so disillusioned with our dinner, that we did not order dessert. My husband and I hate to be "that customer" who complains and we did not. We were understanding about the original mix-up and felt horrible sending not one but three items back to the kitchen...not our MO at all! We love food and enjoy trying new things. Looking back we should have asked to be seated elsewhere, preferably outside with a view. We felt the server should have sent a manager over to us after the 2nd return let alone the 3rd. When E&R was Argyle, there was plenty of no charge for parking. I don't write many reviews, unfortunately, we were remarkably disappointed with our experience, from start to finish. read more

Service was the worst I have ever had at such a high end restaurant. The food was just okay but expensive for what you get. The service was so slow and no one new what they were doing including the manager. My wife bearnaise sauce was brought to the table 10 minutes before her filet mignon was. We came here on 7/23. The restaurant is beautiful, very east coast vibes. The food was below average, unfortunately we had very high expectations. We asked for a medium cooked steak. Our $188 Thor steak was cooked at best well done, possibly warmed up from a previous order. When we told the waitress she was dismissive, didn't even offer to get one cooked to our liking. The crab Alfredo sounded really good, but it tasted like it was microwaved from last night with imitation crab. The broccoli dish needs to go, it's not a Chinese restaurant and didn't meet the standard of its description. read more

Truly 5 stars. Right as I thought north county San Diego dining has his rock bottom, this place shows up in my lap and it was amazing. Ambience - 10/10, food 10/10, service 10/10. We ordered the A5 Wagyu, Crème Brûlée Corn, Cesar Salad, Lobster Knuckle Sandwich, Bucatini, and other items and all of them were incredible. I LOVED every dish, and I will be going back as much as possible. Food is B- but the real issue is service; especially at the bar is lacking (C- at best). Nice - but lacking the professionalism and attention to customer service. Dirty dishes sitting near me for 30+ minutes - credit card out for 15min before I had to flag someone down to pay (bar was empty). Had to flag down people to get engagement. Bottom line - it's a golf restaurant with slightly better than average food that is over priced. Not up to Richard Blais standards in my opinion. Good = the cucumbers and wedge salad. This was my 4th time here since they changed it from the Argyle. Our waiter, Chris, was awesome. He gave us recommendations and was funny and attentive. We sat outside and had a beautiful view of the lagoon and the golf course. I got the ahi tostada which I highly recommend. The mango "yolk" is so unique and tasty. My wife and I are staying at the resort, and used to love coming to the Argyle for drinks, post round HH and dinner. The steaks were amazing, as was their brunch. So we came with our daughter to the new and updated venue with high hopes. Here's what we ordered- Lamb spring rolls- crispy and flavorful, would order again. Tuna tartare tostada- average and lacked a real flavor profile. Do not recommend Squash blossoms- maybe the best item we ate tonight, delightfully crisp, fresh and well presented Beet salad- delicious Shrimp cocktail- solid but nothing unique, still good and shrimp were fresh and well prepared Skirt steak- maybe the worst $66 steak I've ever had. The texture was odd, as if the meat had been frozen when cooked. Besides being under, there was no moisture or flavor. It was terrible Fries- soggy and tasteless, disappointing. Carrot cake- light, fresh and delicious The highlight of our $350 dinner was Jessie, an amazing server and huge asset to the dining experience. I had high expectations heading into this restaurant, and it did not disappoint. We started with cocktails and looked over the menu. We started with the lobster Rockefeller they had as a special that evening. It was delicious and the presentation was superb. We did the signature cocktail will the smoke bubble on top- good but not very spirit forward and too sweet for my taste. App hits: croissants, scotch egg, pork belly skewer. Never need to get the white chocolate salted radishes again, willing to try anything, but there really was no amazing "come together" in the mouth 'wow'. Miss: Caesar salad super bland, artichoke very tough, had a hard time cutting the broccolini. I personally loved the creamed corn brûlée but others thought too sweet and dessert-like (it's a side). The location was pretty, but there is not adequate lighting outside where we were seated so we spent the dinner half in the dark with mediocre food that we paid way too much for. Service was good and that's about the best I can say. Save your dollars and try something in downtown Carlsbad. Sad, sad, sad - Words that best describe our second lunch time visit at a restaurant we had hoped would become our new local spot to frequently entertain and recommend to neighbors. We had several service issues the first time and reserved comment given the restaurant had only been opened a short time. Our second visit proved nothing substantial has changed and, unfortunately, the food and service have diminished. (We tried to directly address these issues with the restaurant, but the restaurant/hotel website does not include an email. Service: While the server, bussers and runners were friendly, for the price and billing as a "Steakhouse" the service level needs to be on point with advanced training. Three times we had runners bring items to our table destined for other tables. It took over 20 minutes for one cocktail to arrive at lunchtime when the restaurant was at most, 1/3 full. Wines on the list were not available. Good luck ordering a second craft cocktail and receiving it timely. When we ordered carrot cake, we asked for 4 forks to share. It arrived with no utensils, the runner disappeared and we waited for someone to help. During both lunch visits the GM who greeted us was dismissive and disinterested - nowhere to be found while numerous service bottlenecks occurred. Thankfully, Tara our server was pleasant, helpful and well informed. Food: We ordered the fish sandwich which had absolutely no flavor and was skimpy for $28. The "3 days to prepare" extraordinary French fries were boring and underwhelming. Tostada was awkward to eat and lacked finesse. (By the way, the French fries and professional service in the Hyatt hotel lobby bar are amazing!.) Overall, disappointing for the price and for someone who is a fan of Top Chef Winner and Judge Richard Blais. Time to retool before the neighbor's get talkin'... Hopefully, management will become involved in the service/overall guest's experience and the kitchen will execute at a higher level. read more

This is a good steakhouse made mediocre by the fact the quality of the food is no where near the price point or esteem of the celebrity chef "Richard Blais" I really wish they would have gone the fine dining route instead of "steakhouse" route. Went for lunch at the bar, burgers and whiskey (Mad Men style lunch) , a tad pricey for the quality. Went again last Saturday for dinner and was relatively underwhelmed. This was formerly Argyle Steakhouse and now is a new Steak House under Richard Blais with a 60's modern / vintage feel. Scotch egg- this is one of the best scotch eggs in the game. Don't think you will find one better anywhere. The tartare was amazing. served on bread with subtle mustard seeds which complimented the flavor without overpowering and a beef texture that ate almost like a pate. The weird thing was a full on chicken egg (over easy) in a side pan. This was odd and for a high end establishment would have expected the quail egg on top If you're going to give me an egg at all. It felt like ordering a side egg at Denny's. Oysters were a hodge podge , overpowered with a weird combination of citrus and some dry ice green onions I believe. Then when you went for the oyster by itself ..... well , we must have got a bad batch, it tasted like the oysters were past expiration. They come in batches of three so we had all had one and were not able to send it back. The potatoes we ordered were the most laughable joke of the night. It was two halves of a potato presented in a smoke box !?!?!?! imagine someone lifting up the cover over your plate at a fine dining establishment and what lies beneath is a plain potato cut in two. They then give you the fixings to put on yourself which really detracts away from the fact you are spending $$$$ to eat here. For the money they really need to get more inspired with their loaded baked potato. We ended up splitting the 40 oz. rip chop. They carve it table side. The first bite was amazing and you can taste the char and wood fired flavor from the grill. It is how I want the finish on all my steaks to be. But when they are carved and served like this , the internal temperature drops fast so my last bites were cold steak. Don't get me wrong, the steak was very very good. For the hype of this Steakhouse I was expecting a steak in the top 1% steaks I have ever had and it was more in the top 5% I feel for the restaurant here because you need to plan these signature large cuts out. which makes it hard to prep hours in advance (such as to get the steak to room temp) if you do not know if anyone is even going to order it. For this reason the steak ran the gambit of rare in the center to medium rare. Not the typical medium rare consistency you would want throughout. If you like Whiskey and Bourbon , then they have you covered in he drinks department. End of the day for the price it was underwhelming and does not feel like fine dining. With all the exploding gastro pubs in Oceanside and creative niche eateries popping up Ember and Rye will find it's footing with boomers who don't celebrate food like younger generations do. read more

Our server greeted us by name, brought out a free champagne toast for our anniversary and provided phenomenal service throughout. There was a reasonably priced cotes de Rhône red blend. We were lucky enough to have dinner here on Sunday night with our two teenagers. We try and take them out to nice restaurants about once a month to help them to experience different kinds of food. We ordered about 12 different items off of the menu including appetizers, starters, and main dishes(including the amazing King's Cut 28 day dry aged Flannery Rib Eye). Everything was cooked perfectly and the service was impeccable. A couple side notes to mention, they have an amazing wine list as well as a thorough selection of Bourbons, my favorite, so that started the night off great. I was really looking forward to my meal here. I'm a big Richard Blais fan. Ember & Rye unfortunately did not live up. First and foremost, I should say that the restaurant is beautiful and the outdoor area overlooks a golf course / lagoon. In terms of the food - there was definitely much to be desired. I ordered a medium rare ribeye. It was served medium well. I didn't feel comfortable sending it back, but a steakhouse should really nail the cook. I enjoyed the seasoning, however. For a $75 steak, I was really disappointed. They also let you select a knife before your steak arrives. There was no explanation as to if certain knives are better for certain cuts of steak, so this presentation was a little confusing. I really enjoyed my mushroom and onion rings sides. Old fashioned was solid. And the tostada with the mango yolk was a fun appetizer. The price is what's driving me towards two stars vs three. All in all, I most likely wouldn't return since my steak was the least favorite thing I ate, at a steak restaurant. read more

I can completely understand why this is the new "it" spot; it absolutely lives up the all the hype. I dined here with 5 other people (plus 2 kids) and no one left disappointed. The wine list is carefully crafted to hit the needs of any diner, but the cocktails are where it's at! A clever spin on the old classics with a bit of humor added in that I thoroughly appreciated. The food... oh man, I can't wait to go back. We tried the chocolate covered radishes, weird, I know, but it totally worked. For dinner, I had the swordfish, which is a Prime Rib Neptune Cut, and it was like nothing I've ever had. It was seasoned perfectly, I had plenty to eat, and I was able to share a bite or two with my compadres. My friends got steak & were equally pleased. As for sides, we tried a few and loved them all, but the stand-outs were the creamed parsnips with spinach, and the corn creme brûlée... wow! My picky three year old just wanted steamed veggies (which weren't on the menu) and they had no problem serving her up some accompanied with a bowl of fruit. The avocado tostada was meh, the grilled prawn (to go) was very salty and the cauliflower was underseasoned. One star off because I requested seats with a view, but sat us at the back with a wall and no view, our server killed a spider with his bare hands right next to my daughter and the speaker was loud at times and barely audible the next, it felt like someone was playing with the volume. read more

The setting is a lovely California golf resort restaurant. The bar tender and the servers however had on dirty clothes. The bar tender never looked us in the eye and it wasn't because they were busy as there were maybe 4 customers at the hour of 5 pm on a Friday. I ordered a charred rare filet mignon. It came without the bernaise sauce I ordered and was well done. Very disappointing. Not a fine steak restaurant . Save your money for a true steak restaurant experience. Menu is overpriced for the experience you get. The restaurant was a typical hotel restaurant with many small children and their families which is fine if you are not going for a fancy nice dining venue. read more

This is Carlsbad's best kept secret. We are long time locals and just heard about it. To be clear, the food was all inspired and delicious. I wish we heard of it years ago. We ordered the scotch egg, pork belly, beet salad, sea bass, hammer cut rib eye, squash, and strawberry jello. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection ! It is clear that your restaurant strives for outstanding service, so here are a few suggestions to make it perfect. First of all, the music in the lobby was much too loud. We had to repeat ourselves to the hostess several times. She tried to seat us next to the BBQ that was making a lot of smoke which blew straight at the table, although it smelled really good it was very uncomfortable, I have severe asthma and asked for another table. Next I received iced tea with a paper straw about an eighth of an inch taller than the glass. It was so difficult to drink that I asked if they had a longer straw, which they did. We also had to ask for salt and pepper and boxes. I also wished I had asked for a separate plate for the squash which was very awkward to eat from across the table and I didn't want to drown it in the sauce the sea bass was in, not sure how we expected to eat it. We will definitely be returning, you can't find food this good anywhere else in Carlsbad. I just hope you consider some of my recommendations so I don't have be as assertive as I was tonight! read more

Great flavors, innovative foods, a pleasant ambiance thoroughly implemented,and the staff tries its best, but I suspect they're understaffed during the pandemic. I love the sea bass, pork belly, and carrot cake. The char siu pincho pork belly, I was ready to hate because I suspected it might just be a Western restaurant gentrifying an Asian dish, but to me it felt like a respectful and innovative take on a family favorite. The fat was deliciously tender, the meat had just enough chew to contrast, the flavor was smoky, sweet, and savory, and the garnish -- a sprig of lightly charred rosemary -- was a surprisingly apt pairing. The sea bass burger came with fries and a fun ketchup-horseradish-tabasco? sauce (loved it), the bass itself was perfectly breaded and not a whit overcooked. Pleasantly, the tomatoes were flavorful! That's often overlooked in burgers. The carrot cake was an entertaining de-then-reconstruction of the classic -- fashioned into a sandwich with a layer of coconut crème in the middle and complimented with a pecan-toffee brittle that comes most fully into its own when snapped into pieces and taken with the cake. I appreciated the regency moderne ambiance, and found it charming that it even extended to the hostess's hairstyle (featuring a victory roll à la 1940s). I do hope she made that nod to the style of her own volition, though, or is at least well compensated for the intimate concession to her job. My only complaint is that some of the staff seemed so over-utilized that I had to wait longer than expected to even put in my order, and when it did come out, part of it was missing. Still, I'm excited to come back and introduce my friends to the food (or, should the kitchen decide to roll out a new menu, myself to the new items). read more

What an amazing experience! Richard Blais has done it again. We've been to ember and rye twice now, once for lunch and once for dinner and they were both so amazing! Lunch- we arrived with no reservation and got a table on the beautiful patio overlooking aviara golf course. The fish sandwich, chopped salad and bacon wrapped filet with bernaise sauce were our favorites. You must try the triple cooked fries! You won't be disappointed. Dinner- For dinner we had the avocado tostada, Chicken, Flannery beef strip, the "thors hammer" bone in ribeye and Arctic Char with habanero xo sauce. I can't really pick a favorite they were all soooo good! Definitely order from the accessories part of the menu. It really made the whole meal come together. The Richard Blais steak sauce, Whipped bernaise, salsa verde and spot prawns were standouts! Don't forget dessert. Carrot cake and chocolate mousse are out if this world. Also ask for specials! Overpriced and exceedingly average. Anticipate spending $125-$175 per person. The service was bizarre. All of the busboys and food runners were Hispanic. The waiter was white. The runners were polite, cheerful, and did a great job. Meanwhile the server was almost autistic and standoffish. One of our group remarked the runners should've been the waiters and then we couldn't help but notice the racial component. The food was, at best, average and, taking price into account, below average. One of our group was vegetarian and was told to "order down the vegetables" section. She was left with a "dinner" comprised of arbitrary side dishes that happened to be vegetarian, but without any actual meal or main dish. Again, at $125/pp+, this is disappointing. Note, also, that an ice cube is $2. An ice sphere is $3. Everything is disgustingly overpriced, which I'm actually OK with, but I would've much rather been at a downtown restaurant where the food and service actually merited the prices. So this is a MUST. Yes it is expensive and YES, you will feel value for every penny you spend. I high recommend sitting outside. The view of the golf course with pine trees and the lagoon in the background is spectacular. Indoor dinning is elegant but the outdoor is unmatched in this region. The bar is also amazing. Everything about this place is amazing. You can park below and enjoy the garden walk to the entrance where you will be greeted, or you can valet. Our server was great. The food, unreal as well as the drinks. Kids are welcome but I suggest this as a date night or business dinner. read more

I wanted to love it, but just couldn't. Garlic croissant was not warmed up. When I bit into it, I was met with solid chunks of butter. I love butter, but it was how I imagine biting into a stick of butter would be like. We got the brussel sprouts which were fine. Nothing special. The one shining star was the Denver steak which was life changing and the best steak I've ever had. However, I don't think it was because of the preparation or cooking, but that cut in general especially from Snake River Farms is bound to be good and difficult to mess up. We also got the hanger steak which was, again, fine. We ended with the Charolette for dessert which was interesting and fun, but nothing extraordinary. I really wanted to love this place. As a local I was hoping for a good spot. When we arrived we were not greeted for 5 min, when I asked a waitress for help she said the hostess was seating someone but I said it's been too long. Then sure enough she came out of the office. She was not seating someone. Waitress was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. For the food. The croissants they brought out to start with a cold. Shrimp cocktail on the small side for an upscale seafood steakhouse and they were not chilled. Cocktail sauce plane flavor no horseradish. Wedge salad was good. Burger was good. Lobster lacked flavor and was very small. More like a local spiny not Maine. Chocolate fondue was a small pot of luke warm chocolate. Overall I would only go back for a glass of wine and salad. The entrees are not with the price at all. Maybe they started strong and have gone down hill. Great views and location. I hope they fix the food read more
