I have a certain vice for (cod) fish and chips and this place has exactly what I like! The batter isn't all doughy but rather it just coats the decent portions of the flakey & juicy cod inside! Lemon, creamy tartar sauce, and malt in a condiment package is provided. So good! The staffers are always ready & pleasant even when it's busy here. There's a lot of take out orders here. We like dining in here. Their food is served fresh and hot every time! Fish district is a great seafood option for food that gets done fast. This location in the Carlsbad Gateway shopping center was very clean, service was courteous, and all items tasted great. Update: Still good, great food! I really miss the outdoor tables, it was so nice to sit and enjoy the meal. Now there's no seating besides a bar type outdoor area, which makes it harder to come unless it's takeout since it's busy inside. The Fish District is small, clean and bright. I've never personally eaten my food inside, but on a few occasions have seen other customers enjoying their food indoors. I most recently had the 3 piece fish and chips. I really like it, crispy batter on larges pieces of flaky fish for a reasonable price. A 3 piece fish and chips was actually 40% less expensive than K____'s fish house which has more ambience and many more inside dinners. Decor was a soothing modern coastal, dining areas and restrooms were very clean. A spectacular sunset outside added to the ambiance. Started off with the excellent New England clam chowder ($7) that had lots of clams, medium thickness, not too salty. Next up calamari fritti ($12) which was light and crispy, not rubbery at all. My mom and sister ordered wild ahi tuna plates ($17.50) and I got the battered Alaskan cod with fries ($14.50.) Praise to the cook for making our fish exactly right! The tuna was seared & tender and my cod was hot, flaky and not greasy. One of the sides was a sesame cabbage salad that I could've eaten a bucket of, it was so delicious. Their fries had that nice extra crunch and seasoned perfectly. The young man helping us recommended the wasabi aioli dip which turned out to be my favorite. It's been growing on me as a nice healthy option near Bressi Ranch. It's been around for many years and needs more recognition as a decent neighborhood eatery. I think it's not top of mind because the seating is fairly limited- I'd recommend having no more than 5 people in your party at the most. There are only about 6 tables inside and three outside. I do enjoy the flexibility to order different styles of fish. I usually get a salmon plate with a grilled filet with greens and veggies. My go-to's are the wasabi salmon poke (sauce is delicious), spring mix salad (dressing is yummy), French fries are extra crunchy.... and don't sleep on the marinated skirt steak! It's so tasty, that I can just order only that! My husband enjoyed the blackened shrimp, fish & chips and has said the battered fish is the best he's tasted in a very long time. The person sitting next to us got the salmon burger & it looked amazing. He confirmed it was very good. Customer service is good. Employees can help with recommendations & happily deliver food to your table. This is a small location, with only a few tables inside. There are a few tables outside as well. So carry out is recommended. If you have to take it home, luckily even lukewarm, this food is great! My only caution is their prices tend to be high for a small fast-casual restaurant. Our family rented a beach house in nearby Carlsbad for the week. I've come to this place about 6 times. Each time, I wasn't disappointed. I brought my mom, my husband, my daughter (and her chef husband). We started off by having Oysters and, I did love the selection of cold-water oysters from Washington and the northern states. (Which tastes better. We had calamari, and our group order a variety of dishes including steak and lobster. I could review each one, but I won't. Ordered a clam chowder and the seared ahi bowl. The clam chowder was amazing, loaded with clams and the flavor was on point, nice broth not too salty. Parking was easy on a Friday evening. It was after 8 pm. It wasn't busy. I ordered the traditional style salmon taco, and the Baja style shrimp taco. I didn't realize until, after ordering that the salmon was not wild caught, but it was tasty though. The shrimp didn't have much flavor, but the other items in it helped. I had lunch for my first visit here - salmon bowl with quinoa and kale. The serving was generous, including a substantial filet. I'm used to the tiny salmon filet at Urbane Cafe that charges $1 less for their salmon bowl than the Fish District. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The filet seasoning was excellent and I appreciated that it was subtle and not overly sweet. I liked lunch so much that later that day, I ordered takeout for dinner. I had the grilled Ono sandwich. Again, the filet was a substantial size. I liked all the toppings. The brioche roll was tasty but way too much bread for me. I took the thick top off and ate the sandwich open faced. Also of note was the great customer service despite the busy lunch crowds . There's not a lot of seating so that may be problematic at peak hours if you want to dine in. Ok, if this review was just for the food it would be high, but unfortunately my experience was mixed. I have been craving fish and chips for about a week, which is rare, but I needed to get rid of the craving. We arrived at about 8 (I know they close at 8:30) and the restaurant was empty. The guy at the counter was friendly and polite. We ordered to eat in and sat down to wait. There was a lot of to go business so people were coming and going the whole time. One of the staff members was complaining to another about a previous customer and how she wanted something off menu and they were not going to give it her no matter how persistent she was. He went on about it for a while. Then they brought our food. It looked wonderful, the fish was golden, perfectly cooked on the inside and the fries were perfect. We happily dug in and it was everything I had been craving. They were apparently getting ready to close (it was 8:10) and they rolled out the mop and bucket after complaining how bad the bathroom and water in the bucket smelled. As we sat there eating I watched one staff members open a bottle of bleach and pour some into the bucket. I was a bit surprised they would do this with customers eating but I assumed they would probably roll it back into the back. They did not. Slowly the whole room started smelling stronger and stronger of bleach, to the point it made me a little nauseous and I couldn't eat any more. We emptied our trays into the trash and left. Maybe that was their goal to get us out? It was 8:24 when we got in the car so we weren't keeping them. This is likely a training issue but I think future visits will be during the day. Ordered: Large clam chowder Coastal style taco - mahi mahi Coastal style wrap - salmon What a great Easter lunch. Everything was delicious. It a little in the pricier side for a fish taco, but worth it! My taco had a huge piece of fish in it and one was all I needed. I would not have been able to eat a 2nd. The clam chowder is great! Flavor is excellent and the fillings is greatly proportioned. Each bite had a little bit of everything, clam, potato and veggies. Yum! I ordered this evening a salmon bowl and a shrimp wrap. My wife ordered online. When I went to pick it up. The sauces were not correct. The so called manager said in a very stern way that the sauces that I wanted were not on the ticket. Instead of correcting the order he kept arguing with me and became quite rude. He actually threw the sauces in my bag. Granted, I was upset, but the customer should always be treated with respect. I was NOT!
