I went to this hardware store to buy something for plumbing but the owner told me they only have it in a large size so I had no choice but to buy the large size and pay $25 for it ! the next day I went back to buy something else and found what I needed the other day in a small size and they had plenty of them , when I confronted the owner's brother about it he started yelling and screaming and telling me not to buy anything else from them and that's exactly what I'm gonna do , by the way their prices are so jacked up , it's 5 more times than the price of Homedepot or Low's !!! be careful shopping there . read more

I want to support small businesses, but they have to be good. This place is dirty and disorganized. The staff could clean it, but they don't. When I got advice from a cashier about which of two products I should buy, and he told me, I gave him my card to ring me up and said I would put the other one back on the shelf. He joked I shouldn't leave my card with him and gave. it. back. to. me. Seriously. So it wasn't really a joke. Then I was on a job using the product he recommended to me, and it didn't work as he said it would. And my clients were sitting there watching me, while I apologized that I was misled by the employee at the hardware store. They don't know that. To them, I could have just been incompetent and covering my butt. This store is working hard to earn one star. It's sad, but unless they turn their crew around and fix the place up, I don't think people should shop here. And that means it will close. Now that orchard supply stores are close this location will be my go to place For any hardware needs or just need fluorescents light for bathroom! I needed circular fluorescent light for bathroom but could not find at any grocery store or drug stores around here and did not wanna go all the way to Home Depot :( And the I found this place! I went into this place the other day for this first time since moving to the neighborhood. As a woman, it's always hit or miss for me when I go to a hardware store on whether or not I'll be taken seriously. I'm happy to report that the staff at Emil's were professional and very helpful. They instead asked what was the glue situation and tried to find an alternate. When none was found, they recommended some nearby locations. Hillbillies. Friendly hillbillies. This place reminds me of an episode of Green Acres, that old TV show. This whole place is like a time capsule. What a mess also. They have paint, hardware and light bulbs here. The reason they get five stars is because the guys working here are SO nice. I needed some esoteric brass fittings for a light fixture in one of my rental properties. They didn't have what I needed, but the main guy with a big beard spent a lot of time and patiently helped me find a proper alternative. It worked perfectly and I was able to hang my light. The place looks closed from Robertson, but the entrance is in the alley at the back. I love places like this that have really nice people working there. read more

Throwback store that has what you need without having to walk through a massive crowded warehouse and parking lot

Emil's is way better than Home Depot or Lowe's I love it because of a) the know-how they readily share to help me get my stuff done right and b) my house seems to have been built entirely out of stuff from their store, they always seem to have the exact replacement I need, no need gerry-rig something else to work, and no need to buy a 100 pack, which makes jobs go way faster and cheaper With regards to prices, check the fine print... you'll find Home Depot & Lowe's follow the classic big box store formula -- loss-lead on advertised items, and mark everything else up a little bit. For example, needed a tall ladder in a pinch, thought I might be getting fleeced when I paid $99.99 at Emils. Was at home depot a little while later -- they had the exact same one for $129.99. And the staff is awesome, any yelper writing otherwise is probably a douche bag or works for Home Depot. read more

This place looks like a disorganized mess, but the people who work there know where everything is and how to use it. They do not have an entire aisle of hammers, but they have a sufficient variety of hammers from which to pick. No, you can't pick from 200 different quantities of pre-packed 3/8" inch nails, but I've been using the same 500 nail set of mixed sizes I bought from Emil's for $8.99 for over 12 years and I've hung a lot of pictures and done a lot of small repairs and furniture assembly in that period. You may have to wait a few minutes to ask for help because there aren't 100+ people in orange vests spread out through the store, but the help you get will be thoughtful and spot on. They're not open from 6am to 10pm every day, but they're open during a broad enough range of hours that it doesn't require rearranging schedules to meet. It's a terrific place and the sort that neighborhoods are better places for having. read more

I like to patronize businesses in my neighborhood, and Emil's is a five minute walk from my house. The store is usually open until 1 pm on Sundays, but sometimes it will not open on a Sunday holiday or a holiday weekend. Fair enough. So given that it's Memorial Day weekend, I decided to call Emil's to make sure they were open before I went over there for a last minute item I needed. The phone rang a few times, and I figured that they were closed. No biggie: I'll drive somewhere else. However, someone did pick up the phone (it was 12:30) and went through this overly long song and dance about how they were closing at that very minute because he really wants to give his guys an extra thirty minutes for the weekend. Frankly, the manager could have simply not have answered the phone (I would have been none the wiser) or let his guys go home and stay 30 minutes himself. Next time I'll just go elsewhere. read more

I was going to give them a 5 star review, but I thought since all the other reviews were so bad, I would lower mine to a 4 star review only because I might be missing something in my review. I happen to really like it here, in spite of some of the bad reviews touching on things that are undeniably true. It is cluttered. Some of the product packaging looks like it's been around for a few... decades. But that just doesn't bother me. I've interacted with three people. A younger man who I'm pretty sure is not related to the Emil's founder and was very helpful; a middle aged man who is a son or grandson I think of Emil's, and an older gentleman-- maybe the middle aged guy's dad? The middle aged man was a bit grouchy but I didn't mind... maybe I was so charmed by the fact that I got what I needed quickly and for less money than I thought I would have to shell out, that his grumpiness seemed charming in a weird, fitting sort of way, too. The older man was quick and to the point but helpful, fast, and made me three keys that all worked. Emil's has been here since 1947 and I really like that-- my grandmother still lives around the corner from Emil's in a house that my grandparents bought in the early 1940's... I bet my grandfather came here all the time. So yes, I'm charmed by the whole thing, but I also got everything I needed at good prices, and no one was mean to me. And they let you have an account with them (if you qualify) which is awesome and so old school and great for people like me who are in property management. One thing I really wish they would do is get a new sign for the front of the building. The one they have now (stands on a pole over the roof on Robertson) is so worn away that it is entirely illegible. The first time I tried to find the store, I drove by it 3 times. I'm sure there is a cooler hardware store somewhere, but I have yet to find it. Walking into this hardware store is like walking back in time...in the sense that there is great camaraderie amongst the staff and you experience customer service that you will never receive in a big box store. What is eeire about this hardware store is that the employees seem to read your mind. I had merely glanced at the spray paint container and the young man (I believe his name is Jorge) was already opening the cage. He educated me on the exact kind of spray paint I would need for my project and did it all with a smile and great sense of humor. Without fail, Jorge helped me no less than 10 times as I traveled throughout the store. I needed some very particular baseboard and Jorge and another employee went out of their way to identify the baseboard and help me find out exactly where I could purchase it. I spend a lot of time in a ton of different hardware stores around L.A. county and Emil's is my favorite. There is always parking, the prices are very fair, and I am always the recipient of awesome friendly service. There is also something so cool as feeling as if you've walked into a T.V. show because the interactions between the employees are laced with great banter and jokes that a T.V. writer would be hard pressed to come up with. The employees at Emil's always make me feel like I am part of their customer "family" and no matter where I am in the city I will go out of my way to head down Robertson and walk into the magic that is Emil's. This isn't so much a hardware store as someone's tool shed. The front part is organized and sells all kinds of random cleaners and such. But once you step into the hardware room, there's junk everywhere! I needed some basic screws, and it took me forever to locate where the screws and bolts were. For awhile, I thought no one was working. Turned out there were like three employees just walking around, apparently also trying to locate merchandise. There was someone at the cash register, and he was just talking to some guy. Not about a building project or anything in the store, just hanging out. I stood there for a couple of min, but nothing. The man behind the counter finally asked, "did you need help with something?" "Uh, yeah. Is this what I'm looking for If doing..." blah blah blah. "Ok, I can help you in a second right after I'm finished with this guy." So this other guy actually needed something this whole time?! Wow! 10min passed, just enough time to see the entire store twice and still be confused about where and how they placed their products. He finally comes up to me and just says "this one" and picks up a bag, rings me up, and I'm gone. Never to return, by the way. I don't care how close and convenient it is, I'm better off heading to Anawalt for service or Home Depot for the basics. read more

They are awesome here. I'm very used to people at a hardware store taking one look at me as a young woman and being condescending and assuming I know nothing. In my case, I am actually not well versed in all things hardware, and I made this clear. They went out of their way to help me out, made sure I got exactly what I needed, and didn't once make any remarks about me being a woman or not understanding hardware. There's something more authentic about going into a hardware store that's actually a little grungy and rustic. I feel that the Home Depot is like a giant 7-Eleven convenience store for hardware and do-it-yourself projects that only carries a couple middle-of-the-road brands. I prefer to patronize the underdogs who have more specialized and varied brands of tools and products. I found what I needed right away with the help of the guy behind the counter who walked me to the locations of the items I purchased quickly and easily. Not to continually dis Home Depot, but I went there the other night and waited in a long line for about 15 minutes to buy a couple screwdrivers that were not my first choice after researching; they were the best of what was available in the super store at 9pm... I guess I gotta give it to them for the convenience of later evening shopping (just like 7-Eleven)! From now on I will be checking to see if Emil's has what I need before making the trek over to the super store. In the day and age of conglomerations taking over everything. Sometime's it just nice to be able to run down to your local store and buy something specific for my needs. I was installing new hardware into my macbook and needed a tool. I don't have a car(in LA?! Are you crazy?!? calm down, I'm just visiting) so I needed somewhere within biking distance. I found this place on trusty old yelp. Gave them a call to see if they had the tool in stock, and lo and behold, they did. I asked if they cold hold it, and they were nice enough to do so. Headed down, bought the tool, and paid with an ATM card. Quick and friendly service. This would be a good store for all of your hardware needs, you don't see much stores like these nowadays, I'm glad they still exist. read more

Nobody here follows covid rules. People who work here wear masks below their noses. I waited here for 30 min only for them to tell me to come back later. During that time about 10 people walked in, most of them not wearing masks or wearing it and taking it off to speak. The employees did nothing about this. Having grown up in the neighborhood and going to school with the grandkids of the founder, I like to go in and help them and the customers. Being a plumbing contractor, I shop for the hard to find parts that none of my local suppliers stock. I also come in for advise to help ID those 1 of a kind faucet stems. Kim, who's been there 43 years is as sharp as they come. He's my go to guy when it comes to finding the parts or to identify what I'm in need for. A word of advice especially when it comes to plumbing parts for toilets and faucets. If you can bring in the part as a sample great, if it's not possible, then some good digital photos on your phone should help to properly ID what you're looking for. Remember even myself being a Plumber for 43 years, doesn't make me a mind reader or a psychic. So when you do visit looking for those 1 of a kind parts, or professional advise, seek out Kim who's a world of knowledge. And if he's stumped, he does have a phone a friend (me) for a second chance. Yes, Emil's is like family and growing up with them is like being a part of the family. It's like the Cheer's of Hardware Stores. Go in and introduce yourself. Tell them Rick sent you. One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. An employee misunderstood my order, got an attitude and when I pushed back started saying I HEARD WHAT I HEARD YOU WERE ON THE PHONE over and over. He asked me the same question worded differently each time. I told him each time the original order plus the quart. Instead of getting a surly attitude with customers, especially customers that have driven out of their way for years to come to this specific store because I liked the customer service, a simple "I misunderstood I'll make the other cab right now." would suffice. read more

This is a neighborhood hardware store, and does a great job of filling this role for the Beverlywood / Cheviot Hills area. The nearest HD or other big store is 20 minutes away (one way). I live in the neighborhood I love the place. I have bought items there at least 30 times over the past 5 years. It is true that the place is cluttered and that you need to get help to find most things. But they do have most things that I have needed, and the total time it takes to get in and out (including driving) is much shorter than if I had to go to a big store. If you live in the Beverlywood area, I highly recommend making Emil's your first stop for hardware needs. read more
