Terrible Customer Service. I have always gone out of my way to support this store as I believe its important to support small neighborhood businesses but after my experience today I will never go to Emil's and I will make sure to tell everyone I know not to support them either. The two older gentlemen who work there clearly do not care about their customers and hate their jobs. If they are not the owners they should both be fired. read more

Horrible customer service from the owner, just like all the other one star reviews. One of the employees said he would have my screen ready earlier than the aggressive owner deemed appropriate, so the owner got mad at me, interrogated me on which employee it was (like I even know), yelled at me, and spoke over me. I agree with the rest of the yelpers that this place could definately be cleaned up some and have a face lift. The customer service could be a little more friendlier. However when I am in a rush to get some small ticket items and I don't want or have to go to the dreadful Home Depot, I am happy that this place is still in business. Believe it or not some of their items are less expensive that Home Depot, probably because they have not changed the price tags in like 10 years. They have a very small amount of parking in the rear, which usually has a spot open. read more

i really want to support family owned businesses .............BUT NOT THIS PLACE not ever i don't care how close you are to my businesses i would drive to Loews or or HD .. your customer service is nasty .giving attitude to me or anyone is just unacceptable . Wow, I'm giving them 5 starts just to try and bring their average up. I'd probably give them 3 or 4 stars depending on if they had the exact part I was looking for at the time. I moved to the area a few months ago and this is basically the only "full service" hardware store for miles. That said, it's convenient, has basically everything you'd be looking for, and the employees are nice and helpful. Yes, it's a very low-key, laid back environment. Yes, the place is old, dusty, and stuff is everywhere (some would call it cluttered, but there are so many little packets to keep track of in a hardware store, that I'll cut them some slack). As far as customer service, each time I've asked for it, the person was knowledgeable, helpful, and nice. Sure, sometimes, you get the impression that they're not waiting on you had and foot, but hey, have you been to a Home Depot lately? Their customer service is spotty, too. Half the time at HD, you can't even find a guy... The only place that consistently has Excellent Customer Service is Lowes, so if that is what you're looking for, take the time and drive to one. If you're looking for a quick, easy, convenient hardware store that is going to have what you're looking for 95% of the time, Emil's is the place. I'm stoked to have it in my area so I DON'T have to drive to a Home Depot. -Jon read more

Good golly it's like being in someone's dirty, cluttered garage. Went there looking for a typical hardware item and the place was an absolute mess. You walk in and get the feeling you should look out for cobwebs - primarily because there's stuff everywhere. Happened to glance over at the desk in the back and was absolutely aghast. - sitting below a massive flat screen computer monitor was STUFF EVERYWHERE - paper on top of paper...it was fairly shocking. As I stood in the aisle looking for the item of interest, it seemed like there was so much dust and dirt swirling around it was hard to concentrate on going through each and every bin to find what I was looking for. Going through each bin was essential because many items seemed completely mixed up. I finally couldn't take it and quickly departed as I wanted to start scratching just to keep whatever was floating around, off my arms. It was actually cleaner outside the store than inside. Most hardware stores are fun to peruse since you can find all kinds of hidden treasures. Whatever is hidden in this store has probably been there for at least half a century and should probably stay there. Regarding the customer service, well...a couple of workers glanced at me while I struggled to find what I was looking for neither of them asked if help was needed. Oh well...carted myself off to B&B where I found exactly what I needed. read more

I used to drive to Home Depot, but tried this place because they support Castle Heights. Haven't been to Home Depot since! Obviously a smaller hardware store, but amazingly well stocked with knowledgeable staff. So glad to have this place in the neighborhood! read more

They actually have a lot of stuff; you just have to think about how it's organized. The staff aren't super helpful so don't expect anyone to approach you to help you find anything. It's fairly dirty but the prices are decent. If there were any other hardware stores nearby I'd rather avoid this place altogether. read more

I think of myself as a good handyman , not my profession , but really enjoy fixing and repair minor things around the house. I'm a huge believer in supporting local business and mom and pop establishments. So I needed a few items and found emils right around the corner. I thought great , run in find a few things and off I go. That was wishful thinking. The staff makes you feel as if you're an idiot. The store is a complete mess, I mean if your going to be in business at least look as if you're still interested in keeping the doors open. I was very disappointed and hope they clean up the place and hire people who care and actually enjoy what they do . read more

I have been going to Emil's since I was a child. It has been passed down through their family. Yes it is cluttered and somewhat disorganized BUT! It has EVERYTHING! The people are very knowledgeable about when it is the equivalent to what and why you should buy this rather than that. The prices are reasonable and the keys they make are better than any on the West side. Ask and you will get. Don't be shy and the service will be great. Don't be put off by the clutter the staff knows where every thing is! read more

At this family owned hardware store, they are all super friendly and eager to help. My 5 year old son just can't get enough. He wants to go every day to explore and wrap his brain around what each item does and how he can improve upon it. Angel is extremely patient with my son and even encourages him to learn by figuring out how things work. I love small businesses!!! read more

Walked around for 15 minutes trying to make eye contact with an employee and was duly ignored. When I asked for help in trying to figure out a solution for a home repair, I was given a distinct "You'll have to figure it out yourself -- I can't help you" attitude, before I could even get more than a sentence out about my project. As other reviews state, the place is a mess. I'm really disappointed, because I try to give my business to mom & pop hardware stores and hate going to big box stores b/c the service is usually non-existent or worse. I'm gradually becoming more and more okay with just ordering things online, because going to a brick & mortar business so often results in frustration. Next time I have an issue, I will drive 30 minutes to Virgil's Hardware in Glendale, one of the last few places I know that seems to really care about its customers. read more

This place is a gem. It's one of the few mom and pop hardware stores left. They have everything in this little hole in the wall store. My dad use to tale me there 25 years ago. Close by my work, had to stop in to pick up some specific types of bolts and screws. Staff was very helpful and friendly, showed me exactly what I needed and I was in and out in no time. This is a good neighborhood hardware store and I've gotten a lot of help here over the past few months. There's a lot of negative reviews that seem to be from a few years ago about the store being messy etcetera. Something must have changed because I don't notice any thing unusual about this place. Yes sometimes some of the staff can be a little short with customers. However from my experience most of the folks who work here are nice and helpful. There is only one worst hardware store in LA and that is because the owner sits on a toilet all day while he checks you out because of health problems. Need I say more. 2 spoiled kids run their dads hardware store and are running it into the ground. No useful stock and the help all hates working there so they treat everyone like crap. service is non existent. ask for something and they will point to the other end of the store and say it is somewhere over there. Great old fashioned hardware store the way there were before the Home Depots. Every time I go there I get personal help from a knowledgeable person who finds what I need and makes suggestions about solving the problem I'm working on. Recently I needed two bolts to fix the broken handles on a dresser. They had to have the exact match of thread and length. The guy who helped me found the bolts, tested them to confirm they worked, and then charged me 37 cents! At Home Depot you would need to buy a whole package of bolts, if you could figure out the fit. read more

This is a hardware store, so don't expect a nail salon. but once you realize that the professionals here mean business and might not be the happy go lucky types, you'll see that they will help with your job and that is something that local neighborhoods need more of, not less. read more

Always dirty, unorganized, overpriced, and customer service does not make up for all that, unfortunately. Their recent response to trying to return a $35 dollar part that the gas company and installer said was defective, was to accuse us of trying to return an old part, to suggest we should ignore the gas company recommendation, to bring back the very old part (while showing them receipt and packaging of part the installer had to buy) and at the same time acting as if their defective part was fine (installer confirmed he tested it before driving to downtown to get a new one that worked) - rude and confronting behavior lacking the mom&pop you'd expect to be supporting in the neighborhood. Our installer, after reviewing the interaction and result, said he will encourage his peers not to shop there. We won't either. We believe in empathy, fairness, honesty, and responsibility. Improper mask-wearing by all on-floor employees was also a problem. We'll just have to stick with the larger hardware stores or online orders. Stay safe! read more

I thought I'd support a vanishing bit of Americana: "the old time, service-oriented neighborhood hardware store." Just like Roxane G., I call to confirm they are open and then arrive 20 minutes before closing time to find that the steel curtain is drawn and the "Closed" sign is posted in the door. When I knock on the glass, a guy comes up and says "something came up, as the owner I'm closed." When I told him that I called to make sure they'd be open until 1:00 PM, he says "Who did you talk to?" as if the onus is on me and I'm supposed to keep a record in case their staff flakes out -- unbelievable!! I'm not always a fan of big "box" hardware centers but at least they're open when they say they are and they carry a wide inventory, even if it's not a homey experience locating what you need. If Emil's stakes their reputation on being the real thing, they are way off the mark. I feel bad for the caring gentleman who was the original proprietor and still puts in time at the store. The business is obviously being run by a younger guy who has no consideration for the neighborhood customers that support the place. With his attitude, Emil's, sadly, will vanish as well. read more

I would like to support local business but not when the business is as bad as this one. I asked whether a drill bit would be right for a specific job, bought it, took it home and tried it. It was the wrong tool. I brought it back and asked for an exchange. Lee, the owner, refused to accept it for a refund of the right one. He is old, and I am old-fashioned: I was polite to him, as I always am with my elders: he was surly and intractable to me, and he yelled at the employee who had made the original mistake. He lost a customer today...and not just because of how dismissive he was to me, but because of the way he spoke to his staff. I feel bad for the guys who work for this man. I will have to go out of my way to drive to the next-closest hardware store from now on...an inconvenience that I accept rather than spend another dollar there. read more

Everyone here is so helpful and friendly. I've come twice now with some problems that they've been able to advise and help on, and both times I feel like they went above and beyond to give me individual help where other stores either "didn't provide that service" or were noticeably condescending to me as a young woman. Here I felt respected and got great assistance. Just today they spent almost two hours of their time to help me extract two snapped screws from some important equipment where a screw extractor wasn't working. This place will be my exclusive hardware store from here on out. read more

I would have rated this place a zero, if given the option. I don't normally write reviews but feel compelled to share my now disgust for this local hardware store. I have been going to Emils for 15 years, and have never had any issue, until the past 3 weeks. I brought in a screen to be resized slightly larger. When I got it back, it was off, which they offered to fix. Then I received a call from the owner, after the fact, telling me their mistake would cost me $10. When the newly corrected screen was ready 10 days later, I went in, paid my $10, then showed them their mistake. Granted I was also quite annoyed at how long it all took and expressed my displeasure with their customer service. I asked them to simply own up to the mistake which was clearly marked on the receipt, and then they threatened to take me "out back and have his guy kick my ass." At which point, I gathered both my old and newly cut screen, and decided to leave. Needless to say, I'm not likely to return anytime soon, if ever to Emil's. Though if you do decide to visit, be sure to express your condolences on their loss of business from people who use Yelp to find a local hardware store. My recommendation would be to then leave and go to the Mid-city Lowes for your hardware needs, where they remove the chip on their shoulder and actually train people in customer service. read more

They are so much closer than HomeDepot that the money I save on gas and the time I save makes up for the little extra I pay to buy small items here. This is just a great old-fashioned hardware store, where they freely hand out good advice and let you know the right tools you need to get the job done. Good prices, too. Very refreshing, in an era of giant conglomerates and nationwide chain stores! Sounds to me like people have been spoiled by the spit-and-polish perfection of the chains, and haven't had the opportunity to appreciate the real thing. It's hardware, folks, not a boutique china shop! These guys at Emil's will also actually do the work for you if they can in the shop, just to help out. A real gem! read more

When you first see this place, it looks like a quaint mom and pop type business. Hooray for the little guys. If it is, they are why hardware giants are doing so well. When I entered the store, no one was behind the counter. I waited for 5 minutes for someone to come help me with keys. Finally a young kid came to the front, follow shortly there after by an older gentleman (term used very loosely). The kid started helping me with keys, but was clearly not confident with what he was doing. He tried to ask for help several times but was brushed aside. The older man, even pushed him out of the way to make keys for the guy behind me, who he clearly knew. He helped 4 more people, who had come in after me. When, I tried to request his assistance, he snapped at me and told me I was already being helped. In the end I only got copies of 1 of the 2 keys I brought in. I will drive 30minutes out of my way to OSH next time. I will probably spend less time doing that. read more

hi normally I don't write a review and always wanted to support local small business we took our old window screen and asked them to redo it with steel instead of fiber glass that we had already they told us it is going to be ready in two days when we went there it was not ready next day again was not ready and when we complain the owner was yelling at us that I am the owner and I will do the job when I can we walked out after a few days we went back the job was not complete one of the screen was smaller than the original was so upset they didn't even say sorry I was stock the material they used was not what I asked the screen was smaller and they wanted more money to make them with the right material (steel) I was stock they charged the whole price in advance before they even do the job right. so iI would rate their customer service very low and unacceptable would not go there any more such a waste of time and money. read more
