Update I called to see if they do same day returns after buying a ladder. When I talked to whoever answered the phone, he asked for what it was and I said a ladder. Immediately his tone changed and he said there's no return it is final sale. I let him know we just got it like 10 min ago, didn't use it, it hasn't even left the car. He said the cashier told me that it is no returns, it is on the receipt and I just let him know that she did not mention this. This must have triggered something because he started to get more aggressive over the phone and started to go on a rant of his own saying things like " I wasn't born yesterday, people use them and return them all the time." I let him know multiple times "that's fine" to his rant about not accepting returns from ladders until he would mention again, that "the cashier told you," then I would respond "that's fine, but they did not mention it." He continued to go off and I was starting to get over being yelled at so I interrupted his rant and said "that's all fine, I just wanted to let you know that the cashier didn't mention it, that's all," which to me I thought an appropriate response back would be "I'll give a reminder to the cashiers to do that." that's it....but he continued on his rant until my friend helped me end the conversation otherwise I'm not sure how long he would've kept going for. Also noting that someone separate from the cashier working had to unlock the cable for us to get a ladder, so that's another person who could've told us that ladders were final sale not just the cashier. But that whole phone interaction was enough to not come back as much as I want to support local and from small businesses. DO NOT SHOP HERE!!! I've never said or thought this before.. but this is a "small business" that deserves to be shut down. Unethical is vanilla, this is straight up satanic business practices. #1 the cashier didn't tell us that there were no returns or exchanges on ladders. We didn't know how much they cost and my friend is too nice so she just paid. It was EIGHTY DOLLARS for a 4ft ladder. That didn't seem right. That's literally double the price of everywhere else. We did some quick research and realized that Emil is PRICE GOUGING. So 10 mins later we asked if they do same-day returns. Here's the deal.. it's one thing that this happened, but his attitude is the thing that was beyond unacceptable. He conceded that the cashier should've told us, and that they're supposed to say no returns or exchanges on ladders. But even a half-assed "sorry" in there would've done it. No, his response was literally "I WASN'T BORN YESTERDAY PEOPLE USE THEM AND RETURN THEM ALL THE TIME." Please explain to me sir how I could've used a ladder that is STILL in its original packaging??? You think I would risk breaking my neck for a return at your shitty garage store? We weren't even trying to argue to still be able to return it, just letting him know that they should say that at check out and he just kept yelling over us. Beyond unacceptable. We just moved to the area and go to hardware stores all the time. We were looking to support a small local business and loyally (and we had already bought things here before).. but now that I see how they really operate, no wonder they go out of business all the time against the big names. If that ever happens to Emil, he earned it. You don't treat people like this and then yell & talk over them just cause they're women. Thievery & price gouging like this is one thing but the arrogance on top is beyond. Thankful I didn't grab anything else here cause I literally had it in my hand and was gonna come back for it. Emil's is a great neighborhood hardware store. If you can avoid going to the big box stores, I would always try to patronize a small local business whenever it's possible. This hardware store has a pretty darn good selection and will probably have what you need. Many of the employees have a lot of knowledge about hardware and installations And I will definitely come back in the future. read more

The lady worked at the register on Saturday, Natalie? She had a nasty attitude; clearly, she doesn't want to be there, nor does she want to help customers. She only wants to chat with her woodworker loudly so that you can hear her annoying voice throughout the store: no eye contact, no greeting. I'm not here to expect excellent service like in a restaurant, but at least a little politeness when you work at a store that provides the minimum amount of customer service. If I remember correctly, the people who work here are friendly, it's a family-owned store, and I would like to support small businesses. I also have a second thought. Amazing little shop! Very knowledgeable on the "how to's" and "what's best!". Had an under the sink plumbing issue in the kitchen and we struck out at Lowe's inventory, and thanks to Google, found this neighborhood gem. Even gave us advice on how to save money on the fix itself. read more

If you're coming to get keys copied, the old guy behind the counter won't copy "do not duplicate" keys without a signed letter from the property owner that he "needs to file with the LAPD" which is a weird flex but it's his right I suppose. So save yourself some trouble and just go to Home Depot. read more

I've been a customer since 1962. Back then Louisa Mondelo (Emil's wife) was the cashier and sons Emil Jr and Luis ran the business. Luis and Emil Jr were always very nice and helpful. Louisa ran the cash register in the middle of the store and, although I never saw her crack a smile, I'm confident she was a wonderful lady. The store has since expanded and I only visited it once in the last year. I believe the grandkids now run the business. But it's still old school, not fancy, and we'll stocked. read more

The staff and the owner of the store are very rude. I bought a block that didn't look new, I asked the seller again - is it a new product? He replied that this is a new product, and said that if this product does not work, I can return it. My electrician installed the staff and the store owner are very rude. Emils is in our neighborhood and very convenient to go pick up the odd hardware items we need without having to trek all the way over to Home Depot or Lowes. The folks who work here are fun to talk to. I come here whenever I need to spruce up my apartment and I love oversharing what I'm working on because they are so engaged and give me ideas on how to do things efficiently. I've grabbed all my tools here (toolbox, hammer, measuring tape), all kinda screws and hooks, a bag of rags, carpet tape, and whenever I need to make key copies. As a woman, it's difficult to have a conversation about shelf-building and TV mounting without feeling condescended. But I've been going here for almost two years now and always leave feeling like a "handy-man". read more

This is an amazing neighborhood hardware store! I take care of a relatives house that is just a few blocks away and built just a few years after Emil's went into business. There has not been anything that I needed for a repair project that I could not find at Emil's. This includes parts for plumbing, electrical, or hardware such as hinges and door knobs. Thet have a wide variety of drill bits, hand tools, saw blades and more. The prices are slightly higher than the large box stores, but the convenience and gas savings is well worth going to Emil's. read more

The service was grea twhen I called in, but when I showed up everything went south. Someone said they were going to help, they left and never came back. This hardware store is hit or miss depending on who helps, or doesn't help you. Seems they have a bunch of crotchety grumpy old guys who have been here too long (or are part owners/owners) and are tired of the business or could care less and dish out service with an attitude. Let me preface by saying this, I typically only write reviews when places are good-great or bad-horrible. In This case the place was horrible. The store is large on the inside and has a vast selection however this was my first time in and as I walk in the guy at the counter doesn't bother to say hi. I ended up greeting him. I ask if they have any vice grips or clamps and the guy first says no and then hands me an adjustable wrench.... not helpful. Next I find a clamp that will work for my diy project and I buy two ponchos (sp?) as well. As I'm going home I look at the receipt and see that I was over charged by over $3. The ponchos say $1.29 each but I got charged $2.99 each. I'm not sure if the labeling is wrong or if the cashier messed up but I'm livid. Picture evidence attached. read more

They have a decent selection for such a small store but it's very dirt/dusty. It's not filthy like hard to clean but there's just a layer of dust and dirt over everything. Most of the sales reps are pleasant and knowledgeable enough. They loose the stars because the managers/owners have a difficult if not hostile and overtly sexist attitudes. We've gone there on and off because they are close by, but each time I'm reminded why they're not my regular store. When I send men in there to pick up something on my behalf they seem to fare better and get less condescending attitudes, but I called in today and the guy must have been in a mood because he started to lecture and berate me. "Enough, enough I get the idea" but he kept going. This is the absolute last time I'm doing business with them EVER. I don't need to give my money to someone so obviously hostile. The guy needs anger management and a few hundred hours of therapy. Lowe's and Anawalt are close by enough. read more

BOSS COME FIRST!!! Came in and asked for 2 items, first guy give me the run around the store and than he went to the other Latino guy who spit on the floor from what ever he chow on and came to me and ask me what I need (Cause the other guy can't describe cement flooring drain). As for the first item his answer was "That won't happen" now what you need to understand from that go figure...apparently he meant that they don't have it in his educated customer service. The owner of the store his boss called him and he left me and went there without apologizing for leaving or anything. Came back after 5min and start to help a different guy so I'm asking him why I need to wait like that? What about the drain? His answer was let finish help that guy (who show up just like that). Then I asked him what kind of customer service is that? You leave me just like that because someone about your name and then instead finishing with me you helping someone else?! His answer was BOSS COME FIRST! After 13 years coming to this store this is my last time! It use to be a family atmosphere business and on my recent visit it become worse by the day. read more

A slightly more expensive hardware store in the neighborhood would be so awesome if their customer service was not so bad it's worth taking your business to Tashman's, Home Depot or any other hardware in Los Angeles. Sometimes I forget how bad they are and try to pop in for something I need fast but this last experience proves just how terrible they are. Knowing I would be replacing some windows on Sunday, I called on Saturday to make sure someone would be their to cut glass on Sunday because I didn't want to remove the cracked glass and have a window without a pane until Monday. Whoever answered the phone said they have three people on staff who can cut glass and if they were busy it would only increase the wait time which is fine but they would definitely be able to do it. Come Sunday we arrive with the measurements and they say we have to come back Monday because there is nobody there who can cut glass. Thankfully we were there early enough to make a run to Tashman's where you do get customer service. I so hope they will sell this store to someone who knows how to run a business. read more

Every time I go to Emil's I get a super attentive sales associate, and they almost always have what I need. Went in for a gas valve, and left with a gas valve and feeling like there was no home project I couldn't tackle. They guided me through not only the products I went in for, but through the process to actually do the project I came in for. No condescension, just undivided help and attention. Prices are fair, and the support I get far exceeds any of the major home improvement stores. Plus you're supporting small business. Win, win. read more

I went to this hardware store to buy something for plumbing but the owner told me they only have it in a large size so I had no choice but to buy the large size and pay $25 for it ! the next day I went back to buy something else and found what I needed the other day in a small size and they had plenty of them , when I confronted the owner's brother about it he started yelling and screaming and telling me not to buy anything else from them and that's exactly what I'm gonna do , by the way their prices are so jacked up , it's 5 more times than the price of Homedepot or Low's !!! be careful shopping there . read more
