Came for a ACL aftershow. I thought the sound in here was really good and great sight lines. The process getting in here with the line wrapping around the building and the doors opening late was kind of a cluster. I mean, the sooner those doors open the sooner they start selling beers. To quote a great film idiocracy "I like money" .. I'm not sure if they do. I also had hoped this place had a bar side that opened earlier. Without checking I had showed up earlier before the show hoping to have some drinks before heading into the venue but that's a no-go here. We uber'd somewhere else to drink a little more then came back for the show. The show I was at wasn't too crowded. I had plenty of personal space. I'm a semi-old dude so I like to stay a little back to the side and close to the bar. Not much else to say.. Thought it was a big cool spot to see a band. read more

I bought tix to 3 shows before they got switched over to Emo's East, and I have to admit I was really not looking forward to going to the new venue simply due to the awful location they decided on (EPIC FAIL, Emo's). However, I sucked it up and went to see Taking Back Sunday last night (wrote the review as a draft in early October- to clear the confusion) and the venue is actually quite nice inside. It's bigger and because it's newer it's still very clean. I like having more space if I don't feel line getting crushed or fondled by the drunk, obnoxious teenagers that share my taste in music. The sound wasn't as bad as some if the previous reviews read, but can still use some improvement. 2 stars for the venue surpassing my expectations, and that might even be too much considering that, generally the last place I want to be on any given night is East Riverside. Seriously... Fail. read more

Is it my favorite? No. Do I hate it? No. I've seen a lot of reviews about the fact that this is 'not the old Emos.' I agree, and it never will be. The old Emos was grungy and amazing and the feel of that would take years to recreate. With that being said, I LOVE that this venue isn't downtown. It's much easier to get to, love that there is always parking and I've seen some incredible shows here. Very spacious, two bars, smoking area, easy access to restrooms, so yay! What is this place lacking? Intimacy. This is my only complaint about the 'new Emos vs. the old' the venue is so large that 1/2 the crowd ends up leaning against the back wall and if you are too far from the stage you get the feeling you're at an awkward prom. So push your way to the front, and enjoy the show :) read more

Ah the famous Emo's. I never got a chance to visit the old location but I know that the new location is a lot bigger and cleaner. I wasn't expecting the large square-sized venue to be so spacious and movable; it reminded me of the Austin Music Hall pit area. The first thing I noticed walking into the venue was the cold AC air blowing furiously throughout the venue. This is perfect since it gets hot and sweaty when the concerts start. They also have a few benches in the far back in case you get tired of standing. There are two bars, one on each side of the stage in case you're thirsty. I love Emo's because they constantly bring in top acts and the concerts that I've been to have all started on time. Advice: Parking is very hard to find so get there early. read more

The new Emo's is *huge*. Other than the Moody Theater, I'm pretty sure that this is the largest indoor music venue in town. There's bars strategically place, it's hard to have a bad view, and there's a good sized outdoor smoking area. I agree with Catherine that it's not anything at all related to the original Emo's. It's a clean and new concert venue now. The original Emo's was a dirty, punky, divey bar that let local bands play in a tiny corner stage. Yes, I miss that Emo's, just like I miss the Ritz and Cucaracha. Urinating in a trough of ice seems to be a commonality there, strangely enough. But I miss them like I miss old Austin. That time is gone - both in my life and in Austin - and that's okay. I just see it as a venue. The legend is just that now, a legend. Something that happened a long time ago that us old hands talk about from time to time in awed and nostalgic voices. And yeah, Danimal is right - stupid choice to name them the same. read more

I brought tickets to see Pink Sweats last weekend totaling to a little over $100 for two tickets. When I approached the gate I was met by some guy who insisted I show him a vaccination card to enter. I informed him that nowhere on the site when I purchased the tickets did it say that vaccination and vaccination cards were required. He proceeded to insult me by suggesting I pay an additional $60 to have two covid tests done on sight. Needless to say, I left the concert. As much as I like alot of the acts that play here, I would never spend money to get into this establishment again. Terrible business practices and they never even offered refunds to those of us that got turned away! read more

I think Emo's East is great. The area in front of the stage is huge with tall ceilings, so there is plenty of air flow which is definitely nice. The thing that I enjoyed the most, however, is that the stage is actually pretty high so I can actually see the band! As a 5' 5" female, I'm not exactly short; but when an inconsiderate a-hole who is 6' squeezes in front of me during the middle of the show, I'm usually left not being able to see anything which pisses me off . I didn't have this problem at Emo's (well, I still had to deal with the inconsiderate bastards...but I still could see! And therefore, I didn't feel the need to punch someone, which is always a plus)! The only reason(s) why I give it four stars is because the East Riverside location is less than ideal. But, we arrived about 30 minutes after the doors opened and there were still plenty of parking spots, so it wasn't really that big of a negative for us. Also, we saw Delta Spirit here, and the sound at times was almost overwhelmingly loud; but generally, the sound was at least on par with other top venues in Austin. I know some people are disappointed in this venue -- but I really liked it (and it's 23489732x better than Austin Music Hall which is beyond awful.) read more

I was expecting a bit more from the new Emo's, but it delivered in other ways. What it had was a nice smattering of bars around the room, which still got a pretty good line. The space was big for sure, although the Butthole Surfers filled it up. We were able to park just a short walk from the front door, and like the Backroom before it, there was a lot of parking. I'm sure we'll all be seeing plenty of shows at this venue. So here's what I didn't like: The bathroom is going to be way too small. Four urinals for the guys? That'll get filled up. What happened to troughs? There was essentially nowhere to sit. They have a small zone of bar tables with stools, but no more than 30 stools. Can't there be a bench along a wall? Of course people will stand on it later, but it would be nice to have somewhere to sit for a bit other than the floor. The smoking pen is about the size of a smoking room at an airport, and nearly everyone wanted to be out there. You can see the stage from out there, which was cool. Not being a smoker, it was not pleasant to be there for more than a few minutes. There was no where else to escape to, which is what I like about Emo's downtown. Hopefully they'll work out the kinks, add some bleachers or benches, and bring out the beer specials they have downtown. read more

In all my years in Austin, and Riverside, Ive only been to Emos ONCE-- lol, and that was for a Big KRIT show earlier this year. While parking is ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS, once you're in, its a big ass warehouse with a stage. There is very limited seating, in the event you needed off your feet a few.. and they walk around like hawks tapping smokers shoulders. Really... But, aside from those two things.. the venue is solid. Sound was superb, and it was plenty large to accommodate a gigantic show. read more

Loved that you could see the stage so well from just about anywhere in the venue. Parking was hard, but I just parked in the lot across the street and crossed my fingers I wouldn't get towed. The bathrooms were disgusting but its expected in a place like this. I only wish there were more seating options in the back for old farts (not quite even 30) like me who can't stand for an entire 3 bands + setups. There were some, but it would be nice to sit back and have a beer while enjoying, rather than having to stand smushed with the crowd who was ready to dance/jump/get cray. read more

Ideally this venue will improve, as this was the club's first night and they do not still formally open for another two weeks, but at this juncture (9/11/11) it was basically an undecorated institutional gray big box with long lines, no lounge indoors or out to maybe sit out an opening band, smoke, or chit chat audibly, but my hands down biggest complaint would be with the bouncers. I was towards the front on the left side of the stage. I could see that the bouncer on the right actually had an amazingly good attitude for anyone I have ever seen in security, but the two guys working the left side of the stage (guy with the goatee and guy with the beret) both had expressions on their face like they were weaned on a pickle. When they weren't reaching several people deep into the crowd to tangle with would-be joint smokers (in general, much less at a Butthole Surfers show!) they marked the occasion by making it the first time I've ever seen a 3rd bouncer rush over to save a crowd surfer from the violence of the first two bouncers rather than to assist his colleagues. In general, the two bouncers on the left really dampened the experience of people in our area as they seemed very negative and on some sort of anti-fun patrol (and I don't define "fun" as hurting people or being uncool, I define it as people enjoying themselves in a relatively tame crowd in front of a great band). Luckily, the butthole surfers are awesome so there was a lot of good stuff going on, too, but none of it really had anything to do with the club. I read on their web page that Emo's East is going to have a full-fledged outdoor patio with seating which will significantly improve the show attending experience, but largely I didn't see much of anything to indicate that they really took anything special into consideration when they were considering the concert going experience of their patrons. It's just another place with no special attraction. Basically, in its current state I did not like it. Just because I loved the band doesn't mean that I can't differentiate between the experience of seeing them and the experience of having to see them somewhere I would rather not have. Apart from not having anywhere to sit down or to be able to step into to chat with people, the biggest problem was with the two bouncers on the left of the stage and their anti-fun patrol, especially if these are permanent employees and that is their permanent attitude. read more

The sound is HORRIBLE. The crowd was pretty wack too but that's no indictment on the venue. That sound tho...sheesh. I just left the Noname show bc her mic made her sound garbled, so much so she said something about it after her first song and it didn't improve. I don't know if maybe the sound system isn't able to carry the sound bc of the size of the venue or some sort of wiring issue but I really felt bad for the performer. At least my ticket was only $25, cause I left 30 minutes into the set. My ears couldn't take it. read more

The new Emo's is overall solid. The look inside is impressive and well designed. It does not have the charm of the old location, but neither does it have the feeling that I'm going to catch Hep C off the toilets. Sound quality was fine, at least as good as it was before the move. I'm not sure what all the complaints on that front are about. I've never had any trouble with security either but then I don't go looking for trouble. The main problem is that parking can get horrendous. Of course parking downtown is bad too but at least there I know all the tricks. read more

I came here for Battles a week or so ago and completely loved the venue. Plenty of parking albeit a little confusing. Pretty confusing door entry and exit. Coming in the front is only for will call and the back is for tickets. Yet, leaving everyone has to leave thru the front. Nice, spacious restrooms. Plenty of space on the floor, which is super nice. The sound is fantastic. Everything about it is pretty sweet. Still makes me sad the original is closing at the end of the month though. Punk's not dead, just a little older. read more

I've been here for a lot of shows, so many that I once held the mayor title for a while. One tip: if you're riding your bike here don't plan on finding anywhere to secure it safely. I don't count a chain link fence as safe. I've had bikes stolen, and I'm traumatized by it, and considering that this isn't the greatest part of town, tonight I chose to skip a show (that I had already bought tickets for) rather than chain my bike insecurely and worry about whether I was going to be walking home all night. To Managment: how does any bar in Austin not have something resembling a bike rack? Y'all have plenty of space out front. On the bright side, the place has good acoustics, mostly short bar lines, and the bathrooms are pretty clean. You can see the stage from most anywhere on the floor. Alas, as many have noted, this is not Emo's. The soul is gone. Still get the good bands, but the character is altered beyond recognition. read more

I went to see The Used at this venue and it was a good time. The parking lot seemed like a mess but we cabbed in anyway. It was not easy to get a taxi in this part of town. On a side note, at the end of the show, a roadie threw out the set list and I caught it at the same time as some really angry young woman. She screamed, "FU*K YOU" to me. It was not a big deal to me so I let it go and asked you why she felt she needed to scream at me and she said she didn't know. I just laughed it off but it was very odd. read more

I love this new venue. The sound is great. There is plenty of space to move around. R.I.P. the old Emo's. It certainly had it charms. My teenage dream of playing the big stage even came true (once)! However, the new venue does not smell like piss and vomit. There are not 2-3 columns restricting your few. The concrete does not slope downwards away from the stage. read more

Holy tripadelphia! I just remembered I visited this place for the first and last time. I only realized this by having a random look to review the history of my HailaCab phone app. Apparently without my known knowledge I attended a Courtney Love concert here sometime in the past. If only I had known at the time I would made positively sure to never remember the event at all. Like waking up in the middle of orthopedic surgery the flashbacks are as ever painful as the day they happened. Ok it must be my fault for somehow procuring a ticket for this ridiculous event, but not entirely sure what happened. To be sure though of the shockingly painful memories of standing around in a large barn-like structure waiting for something to happen that never did until I left. Well the first heroin-induced band was completely unmemorable but I still held out hope as my memory began to fade that it could only get better. Wrong! The second heroin-induced band, Courtney Love, sent me to foreverland/neverreturnland/goodbye/seeyoulater/hastalavistababyland/ nowhereville/whatawasteoftime/ohmygosh/howdumbamI/dumbdumb/Nevermindland! Piecing together the evidence of receipts and flashbacks I evidently missed most of the Love show, engraciated myself to Whataburger at least once after going AWOL and somehow made my way home. It may be a dream/nightmare/fantasy, not sure but I do know I still crave Whataburger and Courtney Love late at night when i am hungry and lonely but not necessarily in that order but for sure in the same night. The building is very nice, but this relocation is a nightmare. It's always been a little confusing to know if a band is playing Emo's inside or outside, but if it wasn't clear it was easy to hop around the corner to the proper door. Now if you stop by the wrong Emo's, it's a drive across town to the other venue. It's insane to have 2 music venues in Austin named the same thing in 2 completely different areas of town. The outdoor shows at Emo's in the summer are brutal, so the A/C is a big plus. The stage and lights are also a big upgrade. But is it just me or did they hike up the drink prices? Also, Emo's, are you crazy? You had the prime location for SXSW music events and you blew it. No one will cab across town to one of Austin's sketchiest parts of town to see a showcase... if a cab will take you at all. read more

Went for Anthrax/Testament last night; first time there. Easy to find based on the big neon sign. It's on the bones of the Backroom for those who have been here a while. Crap parking situation. They need to rent some parking lot space across the street. Only 1 bathroom and it's all the way across the room so it's a pain to get to. 3 bars was nice, most of the lines were 5-10 people long. Mixed drinks available, Fireman's 4 at least. They didn't have the air running, or had it turned way up. Would be nice to have had another set of doors open to try and get some air moving in there. It would be nice if they put some bleachers up in the back. The security folks were great; no attitude I noticed, they had a few staged in the pit to help folks out, held the doors open for everyone. read more

I recently went to a concert at this establishment and it was impossible to see the show. I noticed two huge empty spaces on the walls on either side of the stage. Put up displays/ LCDs and some one operating a camera man above the sound mixer so that people could at least see the main act. Your stage, it's to low to the ground. You guys bring awesome shows but they suck at the same time cause we can't see them play. Do some thing already!!! read more

Saw Twin Shadow here the other night. The venue is wide open. You can easily see the stage from any part of the venue. The bathrooms are well kept and clean. They have 2 bars which are easy to order from. My only complaints are #1, there wasn't much seating at all and the seating they do have are a small set of bleachers far back against the wall. So if you like to sit and watch concerts...this is a poor venue for that. The other complaint I have which is a big one is that even though the sound quality was solid, the volume wasn't very loud at all. I suspect that's because the venue is literally across the street from an apartment complex. Maybe it was just this particular concert but this is the second time I've seen this band in Austin and the first time was at the Mohawk which was MUCH louder. Easily the "quietest" venue I've ever been to and for the type of music I enjoy, this is a big negative. read more

From reading reviews before I finally got to the new Emo's last night, I was figuring I was in for a tough time. However, as it turns out, I had a good time, despite a couple of extraordinarily rude audience members that came damn close to unleashing my inner Batman. When a gal next to me actually took more insult than I did and went to the front of the stage looking for security, I saw right away that the staff was paying attention and gave a damn. That's good to know. Speaking of staff, everyone I ran into from security to the bartender, all pleasant and enjoying the night. 'Course, didn't hurt that we were all watching Trombone Shorty, but that's why you go to a place like Emo's in the first place, right, so I'll call that just a bonus. The air conditioning was surprisingly good. The acoustics need some work (and I should know - I've been on my share of stages - what?!) but I've heard far worse. (My ears were ringing when I got home, but I got dragged to the front center stage early on, so that's probably to be expected.) Sometimes the mix on the horns was decent, and that's a sign that the soundman doesn't totally suck -- it's how acoustic instrumentation gets mixed that sets that apart, IMHO. (Needed more tenor sax though, dude. You were making him work way too hard. Just sayin'.) Parking wasn't a problem for me, but I parked legally on the street near the Buzz Mill (super friendly staff over there BTW - will review later) about 90 mins beforehand and grabbed a drink or 2 before Emo's opened its doors, so there's a tip for you. Area felt safer than I anticipated, but I'm not exactly a bunny rabbit, so I'm probably not a good judge of that. All-in-all, Emo's delivered. If it hadn't been for the crowd pushers that thought a 1 foot space was reason to jump into MY space, I'd have had an almost perfect evening. Good job, Emo's! I've never had a bad time at Emo's. The staff is accommodating. I appreciate the security at the venue making me feel safe. The parking lot is mid-size and if you don't show up early, you'll most likely be parking on the street. Check the website for where to park without the risk of getting towed! There are several bars inside so I've never had to wait too long for a drink. The venue is spacious so if you're like me and don't want to be smashed in a tight space by sweaty bodies, you don't have to be. I also appreciate Emo's music lineup which usually brings smaller artists that I love to Austin! read more

Poor sound quality. The mics stopped working after the opening act performed and it took literally 40 minutes to fix, causing the main act to start an hour late. It was an all ages show so I did not think there would be moshing, but there was. The singer of the band told the few idiots doing it to stop. No security came to help, but they stopped a bit after that admonishment. They started it up again during the next song so I just left to stand in the back. Really ruined what was otherwise going to be a good concert experience. Not going back. read more

Went to see Lights/X Ambassadors on the 21st. Overall it was a great venue. The acoustics were awesome, the vibe was great and I've never seen three bars in one venue before. Security was AWFUL though. Before the fans met Lights a security guard made it a point to tell us it "needed to be quick" because she "wanted to go home". Obviously they didn't get the memo on the wrist bands fans got to meet Lights as I was practically stalked and almost told to leave until I showed my bracelet. I'm contemplating if the acoustics and vibe are worth the crappy security. read more

Not terrible. Came to Austin, like many, for ACL. Missed Bishop Briggs at ACL do to flight screw up. After the festival they were playing at Emo's. My only real complaint is the sound quality. But since that is pretty important when what you do is hold concerts, you might want to sound good. The best places to hear anyone is straight down the middle. Anywhere else, is gong to sound a bit muffled. read more

I just went to see King Krule it's 8:37 pm Tuesday, April 10th 2018, been a huge fan since 2013 with 6 feet beneath was literally my favorite album for years but, he never toured here in America (( I would check religiously )) anyway on with the story I bought the $80 tickets (( two of them )) and sat in traffic after getting off of work at 3, long drive since I live in San Antonio. Get here everything is going smoothly. As I was entering the line with my friend who's wearing a crop top the people who work there said "and do you see what they're wearing these days" ok whatever I don't care about a homophobic comment I'm not here for you I'm here to see an artist I've loved and been a fan of since I was 17. So I walk in stand in line and wait to buy merch. Buy it and head to the crowd I also had a drink in my hand. Let My friend take a sip, I was deep in the crowd and smelled marijuana everywhere I didn't think they'd care if I gave my friend a sip of my drink. They somehow see and pull us out from the crowd, asked me what I was doing and I said look that's the last of the drink, look at him talk to him he's not even drunk, the guy said it was ok then pointed to an someone who obviously worked there since they were wearing an Emo's Austin shirt and he said "if it was watered down let's go get it", we go and he smells it and says we have to leave the property before even explaining ourselves all before even seeing him. Rips off our wristbands and tells us to get off the property. We weren't loud, weren't obnoxious, weren't smoking, weren't making a seen. Just trying to have a good time. This is the worst thing I've ever been through in my life. Worse than seeing my step dad shoot up or my mom beating me with a cable wire. They seriously belittled us and made us feel like we ran over their dog or something. Anyway if you're reading this thanks for listening. I wish more venues were like this in Houston! Went here recently to see MSMR who was just awesome. Great energy and giving ah-mazing vibes. Doors opened at 7 but I was only interested in seeing MSMR who was expected to come on stage at 10 pm so I came around 9:30pm. I was really nervous about parking because most venues in Houston do not have easy parking so I was a bit panicked. However, the guards there showed me to the back and there were open spots! Jack pot! Granted, it wasn't like it was empty but you definitely didn't have to fight for one so I loved that. Could be that the band just wasn't as popular but regardless, I was happy. If you don't feel like going home or driving after the event, there are some bars you can go to after the show. We went to Midway Field House to grab some drinks and played some pool. It was really empty but that was a-ok with me. Also, the bar (inside) is dog friendly apparently.. we saw two small dogs there just hanging out on leases with their owners read more

One of my favorite venues in all of Austin. They host concerts of all types here and you don't have to shell out extra money for parking. The staff can take their jobs a little too seriously sometimes but as long as you're not breaking any rules, you should be just fine. Try to buy your tickets straight from the venue to avoid those pesky online fees. read more

I was visiting from Tucson, Az . My hubby and I went to see Reverend Horton Heat here and we had an amazing time. I really like this venue. Piñata Protest opened up the show and they rocked! The music sounds really good in this venue. The Rev of course Killed like he always does. What I especially like about Emo's is that you can have a tab going without leaving your card at the bar. If you don't feel like closing it at the end of the night, they'll close it for you and add the 15% tip. I wish more bars would do that so you don't have to wait to get your card back at the end of the night and it saves you the trouble of trying to get it back if you were to forget it which is very easy to do when you're having a good time. If your favorite band is having a gig here, you can't afford to miss them. read more

Decent as far as venues go. While the parking lot is pretty damn small, this is something to plan for. Get there early, carpool, or park a mile off in a residential or non-towing commercial area and walk it. Not that big a deal. read more

I've always been a fan of small venues for live music, little to no setup, open floor space, get right up next to the stage. This place is exactly that, a box that surrounds you with the music, you're part of it. Yes they serve drinks, staff are friendly, etc., but it's that intimate venue that wins it over for me. read more

Emo's Austin - Donna Missal opening for Bishop Briggs! - Music Venues Near Me - Austin, Texas

I really like this venue. It's huge, the bars are easily accessible, they have some heavy duty security, and reasonable parking (although it took me 10 minutes to park, but it was within their parking venue). Sure this place is a little out of the way, ie not downtown, but I do like that. I went here to see Led Zepplin 2, a Led Zepplin cover band. I loved the acoustics of the place, the high ceilings, the large merch table and just how organized they were. This place is definetely worth checking out if you have a favorite band coming to town. I also love that security really works hard to get rid of the riff raff. read more

I have held off on writing a review for the new Emo's because I was not sure how to review it. Do I write the review in the spirit of it being Emo's of old but in a new renovated location or should I write it as stand alone location without letting my thoughts of the old location skew my review? I decided to try to be a bit neutral and do it off of this location alone and try not to mention the past. So here we go... Emo's East is huge. I was actually quite surprised by the size when we walked in. This is the kind of venue that Austin needed for bigger shows. We went for the Cypress Hill show and the place was packed but it was not hard to move around unless you were in the beer line. I like the new outdoor smoking area as it has a lot of seating and with the L shape you can move around pretty well. The bathrooms were cleaner and actually made me forget I was in Emo's. The sound was good and clear although I had people in our party who said that it had been hit or miss on other shows. Maybe they worked out the early kinks or maybe it was just the sound guy for that day. I was pretty impressed with the whole experience from that point of view. My concerns with this place is the location, parking, and the beer line setup. The location can be a bit sketchy at night with all of the people walking around, I would highly recommend using the buddy system if you end up parking in the surrounding area. This leads to my second concern, parking... how they decided to move into a much larger venue but not were not able to work out a better parking situation. Somehow they moved from downtown to the east side and parking at Emo's actually got worse. Finally the beer line, this thing moves so slow and seems very disorganized. The night we were there it was taking 20-30 minutes to get a beer (luckily they would sell us multiple beers at a time so I didn't have to come back as often). Open a couple more lines along the bar and this would be a non-issue. These are minor concerns but they were things I noticed. read more

Very nice venue. It's one big huge open space, all one level. It would be cool if there was an upper level, but otherwise it had good sound quality and I would go see a show there again.
