Wow! I'm so happy I discovered this cafe and I'm antsy to return soon. We were immediately greeted…read moreby a friendly face who welcomed us in. The menu and everything in the display cases looked so appetizing, we had such a difficult time choosing what to order! We started with BEC sandwiches - they were made really well on delicious toasted rolls - my only complaint was the Kraft American cheese singles. Please upgrade the cheese and it will make the world of a difference to the meal!! I also had a hot tea with some pastries we got: Oreo cheesecake and an ombligo with a custard filling - absolutely delicious and perfectly sweetened. The inside decor was very nice and offered comfy soft seating to dine in with. I will definitely make a drive up soon from Norwalk to enjoy some more!

We tried the beef and the spinach/mushroom empanadas, a chocolate filled pastry and the alfajores. The empanadas were the proper baked Argentinian version. I thought the beef was very tasty but it lacked the chopped olive I associate with the Argentinian style. La Portena had no complaints about her spinach/mushroom version. The alfajores came in three sizes, something I did not realize when ordering. I would not repeat my order of the large size, the ratio of cookie to filling being off. The medium looked about right. The best item was a chocolate filled pastry, similar to a croissant that I had the next day. Flaky and light, it revealed some skill in the baking.

For starters we had an empanada made from plantain, it was very good, made better with a sauce they gave us. Next we shared a plate called Picada which was various types of fried meats which was excellent. It contained pork, chicken, beef and a type of sausage. It was served with tostones (fried green plantains). The serving was huge. We loved most of it, except for the beef, personally I like it more rare and it was over done. The restaurant has an extensive menu with breakfast, lunch and dinner options. When you enter don't be surprise if it looks like a corner store, they do have tables set up to eat in or takeout.

Parking is tricky. Ok enough about the establishment, let's chat food. So I ordered the fried steak with rice and beans but substituted the beans with avocado. When my food came out, it was like a 5 course meal. Seriously too much food for one person but hey a girl's got to eat - so not complaining because I definitely eat. This dish also came with an empanada (made with green plantains and dough mixture, tasted like oh so sweet butter!) Different from other empanadas and pastilles but in a good way. My lunch amigas ordered vegetarian option for empanada and Ecuadorean version of tamales. And banana plantain stuffed with crumbled cheese. Next time, we will make room for dessert and will continue this review for sure!
