I was guided by my cousin who lives in the area next time I came to visit I had to try Empire Bagels. On my last day up this year stopped for a late breakfast. It was Sunday after 10am. There was a line and at first it moved fairly quickly. The staff did seem spread a little thin but they were trying. I ordered my usual litmus test of any bagel place, a BEC on a plain bagel. While waiting they do have some tables and bar chairs to sit if you want. Not fancy as it's not a huge place. Very casual. There's a cold case where you can buy drinks and pre-packaged food. After a bit of a wait I got my BEC. It was good. The bacon was nice and crispy. The bagel was also solid. Next time I'm up seeing family will go earlier as they were out of a lot of choices, but they were replenishing some as I was waiting. I tried this place a few weeks ago after moving my office nearby. The service was extremely slow. I mean very slow. I figured it was a bad day and I'd give it another try. So today I call in to order on my way there so I wouldn't have to wait as long as last time. The guy immediately puts me on hold. 13 minutes later I walk in, still on hold, There are 4 people in line and 2 workers behind the counter working albeit slowly. I truthfully have mixed feelings about this place. I'd say 4 stars goes exclusively to the bagels and 2 stars for the staff and everything else. Bagels are pretty good. Nothing over the top but for sure the best in Brewster! The little farm housey vibes are pretty cool inside. Overall this place could be better than what it is. What I truly can't get past is the staff. Way too rude way too rushed. I completely understand the rush but no need to rush me into ordering and behind r u d e. Skip the omelette, skip the hash browns. Stick to the bagels and cream cheese. They're made fresh. Not a bad spot to be in this plaza just wish they'd be a bit better. Overall I'd give a 3.5. Our go to for breakfast! I usually get the OG breakfast with Matcha smoothie (banana, matcha, honey) then my husband usually gets Western omelet with Peanut Berry Jelly Time. Got to the car, and my boyfriend starts picking around the container. We both took a few bites and realized something was very off. Marched RIGHT back in, asked him to double check and make sure there was no meat. He came back out and kindly apologized that there was bacon. When I got my refund, a kid came out of the kitchen and started arguing with us that we should have asked him about the side, but how we were supposed to know to ask a specific employee what's vegetarian? I COUNTED on this place for having vegan and vegetarian options. Now, we will never go back. Met my Dad and brother at Empire Bagels in Brewster. My Dad actually frequents this place so I wanted to give it a try. I read alot of reviews about orders being incorrect. But since my Dad likes this place I was just hoping the day we went it was our lucky day - it wasnt. Now they were very busy with call ahead or order online orders. My Dad ordered an everything bagel with tuna and a coffee, my brother a cheeseburger with fries, and myself a hot pastrami with onion rings. For some odd reason they did not hand my Dad his coffee before he sat down. Once the entire line cleared he had to go back up to ask for it. My Dad had to clean off our table because every tables had crumbs all over them. Other tables received their food, ate their food, and left when our order came out. My Dad's order - correct, my brothers order - correct, my order in correct. I had not eaten anything before hand and was hungry. I bit into the sandwich and it was spicy like really spicy. Then I look and somehow I have grilled chicken and not pastrami. At this point I was annoyed by the wait, annoyed my order was wrong. I had just witnessed an employee agruing with a customer because he had ordered the same exact lunch the day before but was charged more this particular day. So I scraped off the red pepper flakes and ate as much of the sandwich as I could. If you look at my other reviews I most often rate four and five stars. Im not looking to diss a business. Came in this afternoon for lunch. Wasn't any line, customers were seated already eating, so I figured it'd be quick. Ordered a simple sandwich. Took over 15 minutes to make a chicken sandwich with bacon. Unbeknownst to me, they cook their chicken to order, but even with that, for how thin the breast was, it shouldn't have taken more than 5-6 minutes. Chicken, as expected, was over cooked. Tomato was unremarkable, bacon was limp, and the bagel wasn't feeling too fresh. Prices for the drink cooler aren't listed anywhere, and extremely overpriced when you find out as you're being rung up. Overall, could have been faster, tastier, and more transparent. Be careful when you order via phone or other service for pick up. They hand you the wrong food and when you return it for the correct food they tell you "you gotta check". How about they check before handing me the wrong food and then blame me for not checking it. It's their responsibility to provide the correct food, not mine. Buyer Beware: Their butter is NOT butter, it's a fake buttery spread. Their bagels are tasty for sure, but I find it offensive to advertise Bagels with Butter and then be given a fake spread with a laundry list of ingredients (none of them being cream). It's nasty and feels like I'm eating plastic. Also, while their rainbow bagels are beautiful, they're so full of artificial food coloring, that after eating one, my son's poop was so blue/green that it discolored the water in the toilet. The issue is not the food. It's great! Really, it is...when your order is made right. It seems like the staff needs a lot of training. Everyone is friendly, which is also a plus, but it would be great if the staff actually remembered what you ordered after telling them three times. Friendliness and good food doesn't cut it when someone has been in the store several times and each time, there's an issue with your order or it takes 15 minutes for a simple egg sandwich and straight coffee (not during a crazy rush). It sounds like I'm not the only one who has experienced these issues, based on other reviews. I believe in giving people and new places a chance, but I'm running out of chances to give. Even today, my wife went there, ordered a sandwich for herself and a PLAIN bagel - nothing on it- for me and they forgot to put it in the bag! How hard is it to just throw a bagel in a bag?? I was really looking forward to this place to open and boy was it worth the wait. The look and feel is exactly what this area needs. The menu is excellent and food is very fresh. The staff is very friendly and happy to accommodate. If you're ordering a bagel or sandwich you will leave satisfied. They have plenty of healthy options too. I just love this place and have already made it my regular stop in the morning on the way to work. I wish them lots of success. Good, solid bagels, and cream cheeses seem on point, as well. Their breakfast sandwiches are good, and I've learned that you're better off plowing ahead and going off menu with ordering. Just because they have a very extensive, slightly overwhelming menu doesn't mean you can't just get a ham and cream cheese on an everything. Staff seems to be settling in, although the lack of a prep line (or at least a distributed one) means that everyone is everywhere, and it can get a little chaotic, to the detriment of service. And just a mild whine, they need to figure out their coffee situation. You can't keep sugar and milk behind the counter, then look confused when I specify how I take it and try and hand me sugar packets. But, overall, they're doing well, and doing better read more
