We come here all the time for the great food! There's something for everyone here. The burgers are pretty special. For the longest time I would get the Abe Froman but the last few times I've ordered it, it tasted kind of strange. I highly recommend the Cartel because the pimento cheese is out of this world! I also get The Empire often and I love it! The flavors all blend together and it is delicious. I have also tried The Vegetariat from one of my friends and I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it! An absolute must are the Burger Cigars- they're unlike anything I've ever tasted and it's such an original recipe. We order it every single time we come here. The food here is a little pricey but since this is downtown Naperville, that's to be expected. The portion of the burger is decent but the portion of the fries are small. It's almost shy of a handful. For paying almost $15+ for a single burger, I wish the sides were a bit larger. I have tried their Dirty Chips and I wasn't a huge fan. The ambiance is beautiful inside and on the patio. The tables can be a little sticky sometimes so I try to wipe it down before sitting. This place does get really crowded during lunch and dinner so whenever my friends and I visit, we try to come at an off hour. I believe they also have a live band sometimes which is great. They're playlist is pretty good too! As for service, honestly, it's a hit or miss. Sometimes you get a really good server and other times really terrible ones. I don't really mind indifferent servers but when the place is dead and they never drop by and you have to get up from your seat and go hunt them down it can get a little frustrating. For the most part, they're alright, it's just a hit or miss. I haven't eaten in person due to COVID-19 but I have ordered curbside pickup. They do well with packaging it and ordering online is very easy! You can make easy substitutions and put in any special requests. I also love that when we order Burger Cigars, they separate the honey and the other sauce to prevent it from getting soggy. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone! It's one of our go-tos but is a little pricey for a burger. It's worth it though! I would, though, like to see new additions to their menus sometime soon. read more

Empire has a super prime location in downtown Naper that is tailor made for rooftop fun in the summer and a cozy bar atmosphere in the winter. I don't think there are many places like the Empire anywhere out in the Suburbs so if you are looking for a night out and want to save yourself a trip to the city then Empire definitely can be your cup of tea. I see a lot of mediocre reviews about the food and service but I don't think Empire is trying to wow you with their food. The menu is small for food with the emphasis on burgers, bar food and drinks. They have their own specialized mixed drinks on the menu and the Smokey Jon Snow seemed very interesting. We went for lunch and tried the "dirty chips", "shredder salad" and the fried doughnuts. The food came really fast, the server was ok and at times vanished but the rest of the wait staff were very attentive. The shredder salad has a huge portion and can be shared if you are ordering a separate appetizer. The dressing made it seem too sweet (unhealthy) so you can ask for the dressing on the side or light dressing if your goal is to eat healthier. The fried doughnuts which are absolutely delicious and certain to do a number on your healthy eating goals are a must try. I'll be back at Empire and I'm glad we have an option for a bar and a burger place with scenic views in downtown Naperville. read more

Okay so we went to the rooftop on a 80 degree day so it's partly my fault. It was stifling. They HAVE TO install misters or close the rooftop when it's warm out. The bartender was fantastic (he was boiling hot too) and got us our yummy lunch. Food was great. Iced tea (me) and beer (my hubby) was great and cold even though the taps were dripping with moisture. I write this review after coming home from a fun night out and I really liked this bar. It is filled with friendly people and beautiful surroundings. Whether you are eating and drinking on the first level or outside on the roof, you will have a great view and ambiance. I came here with a friend as a quick get together before she moved far away. Naperville was our midpoint so we decided to spend some time in the cute Naperville Downtown area. We stumbled upon this place and loved the way it looked. It is very inviting. We went there on a Thursday night and were seated outside right away. We seemed to have come right before the mad dash. It was gorgeous outside and quickly filled up. The rooftop bar is very inviting. I really liked the vibe and the décor. There is a huge beer selection. Personally, I'm not a very big craft beer person and neither was my friend who went with me. We both ordered one of the cider beers on tap and it was very refreshing. We weren't super hungry and really just wanted to sit, drink, and talk, so we just ordered some entrees. She ordered the veggie burger and seemed to really enjoy it. She claimed it was a little messy, but overall pretty good. I ordered the porkbelly blt. I really like the way it tasted, but the bacon was very chewy which made it hard to eat in sandwich form. The flavor was pretty good. I'd probably want to try something else the next time I go. Beautiful location just over the river with outdoor patio dining space overlooking the river or indoor that is also beautifully decorated. We got the Key West burger (excellent, turkey is moist, lots of sauce, pineapple is the highlight) with salad instead of fries. Guinness was excellent as well as the apple/pear cider with Crown Salted Caramel. We asked tge waitress what were the most popular liquors to add to the cider and she said Crown Salted Caramel and vanilla rum. The cider was excellent, a perfect wintry, holiday drink. Great potential. Just disappointing. Stopped by our first time and thought we'd have a beer and a snack on the very nice rooftop. Crowded Sunday and everyone seemed pretty happy - except for one guy that we overheard didn't like the tepid tap water served on the table in a bottle. I have to agree. This isn't France. I live in America. I like my water cold. That means with ICE and in a glass. I also want salt and pepper on the table. I really don't care if it means your people have to do a little more side work - or if your chef thinks his dishes are perfect the way they are. In this case, burgers and BBQ didn't need it but you are serving fries and tots. So yeah, give me my salt. The beer and whiskey lists are great. Too bad I'm a one beer kind of guy - and I don't drink whiskey. They appeared to be short on a vodka selection, which is my preference. We started with the caprese salad, which should've been a no brainer. At $15 it was, without a doubt, the worst caprese salad I've ever had. Inedible, non-ripe, small red and green tomatoes with the green ones so hard that I couldn't cut them in half. The mozzarella cheese was not at all fresh and the pesto was very garlicy. The arugula was over-dressed. Just gross. We then had the BBQ brisket sandwich with fries ($16). The sandwich size is what I would expect for a kids meal. The brisket was okay but a bit dry. Here's a thought; If you're going to serve me friggin brisket, cut the FAT off of it. When YOU have a steak, do YOU eat the FAT or do you cut it off? That's right. TRIM YOUR MEAT. In this day and age of more healthful choices, no one likes a mouthful of fat. This particular BBQ sandwich is served with coleslaw on top. I guess it was supposed to have BBQ sauce on the bun, but in line with their apparent rule about limiting condiments in this place, it was virtually non-existent and there was no extra sauce on the side. No BBQ sauce for a featured BBQ sandwich. Oddly, they did serve an extra, albeit tiny, plastic ramekin of ketchup for the cold fries. They had no heat at all. Our server "Kelly" was friendly but didn't know a lot about food service. Had the food delivered by a runner who, even though he brought the app with the entree, was still better than our server. Noting it was she who put the order in that way. Kelly always seemed to check back just a little to late. Either when we decided put up with or have someone take away our choices. I really do not like that the menu states "well done = not refundable." I have seen a few restaurants around northern Illinois area that make the same statement, what a crock of ridicule! People pay to have their meats cooked a certain way, if YOU can't cook it that way, they shouldn't have to PAY! I ordered the Abe Froman burger It was a nod to the sausage put on the burger. I chuckled at the abe froman...referencing the "the sausage king of Chicago" (for those of you who don't know, google the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", better yet ,see the movie. it is great!) The abe froman had a pretzel bun, i think knockwurst sausage, carmelized onions, blue cheese sauce, and fries. This burger is probably in the top 20% of burgers in chicagoland, in my opinion. The second level (by the stairs) is the kitchen...so you go up to the 3rd level (or take the elevator) and you can sit inside in a small area with a nice t.v. (lounge-like space) or go outside. the Orange stools are open-seating (you don't need to ask the hostess to sit on these) at a small horizontal surface spaces outside on rooftop (mainly for having a beer or wine only)...or you also sit outside at the bar on the rooftop (all the seating at this point is rooftop) on two separated rooftop outdoor seating areas. One is on the bar level and the other you go down some steps (a private lift there for wheelchair users or those who cannot take the steps) to the other area outside. I imagine it would be nice in the spring/fall evenings, during the day in 3 seasons without snow. I also had the dirty chips with the slight curds of blue cheese and buffalo sauce on straight, thinly cut chips...good buffalo sauce..just a bit of kick, but you can handle it. I also rode the Green Zebra. After circling around Founders brewery up in Grand Rapids Michigan and having no way to park and running low on time, I cried as I left that brewery. But here I got to try the Green Zebra Sour Beer from Founder's Brewery. I don't like sours much but I enjoyed this one. It drinks a bit smoother than a lot of sours, which will make you breath fire like a dragon. I wanted to try the fried cheese cake. But my tank was bursting at the letter F! (FULL!). This is a fun spot to dine and socialize at! They have a good amount of tv screens, the beautiful patio, and a stage for live music. We had a party of about 14 ladies for a bachelorette party. They had two servers cover our table (great thinking there!) and our food and drinks were quickly brought out. The prices are what you would expect for the area, so no complaints there. The fries were really good, but a little low on the quantity They still accompanied my pork belly BLT really well. The sandwich was flavorful and all of the components complemented each other well. They also have a great beer selection, both bottled and on tap! Finally decided to check out Empire to see what the hype is about. I checked us in using the waitlist feature which is awesome ! Upon arrival we were given the choice to dine in or dine on the rooftop. Chose the rooftop because it was a beautiful sunny day out minus the wind. Once seated it did take a couple of minutes for our server to attend us. Once the server showed up we immediately put our orders in for food and drinks. Sadly our drinks were served like less than 10 minutes before we got our food. Not to mention our water was lukewarm. The server was not as attentive to us as he was to the table next to us. However, the burgers we ordered were good, the fries were great ! The food menu is very limited. There is a wide variety of alcoholic drinks. We went there for dinner and drinks. My husband ordered a grey goose martini and was charged $22.00 for the drink. To say that we were a little shocked when we received the bill would be an understatement. We called the restaurant and talked to Jay who said that we were not the only people to call on this and they are looking into it. I feel like this is yet another money grab. Today I took my girlfriend to this new place called Empire in downtown Naperville. Poutine fries, Chorizo burger, Empire burger, 1 glass of red wine and Revolution IPA. Total cost $70.15 Downtown Naperville Illinois is well known for its Beautiful riverwalk, parks and famous Ribfests every year along with nightlife bars and restaurants. Today we decided to try a new place called Empire. The atmosphere was welcoming and the staff was friendly. This place has 3 levels with tables on the deck overlooking The riverwalk. The tables are a little small so it's not uncommon to hear the sound of a glass shattering from someone around you from falling off the table. However the inside tables are much bigger but we still enjoyed ourselves.The Empire has a wide variety of wine, craft beer and cocktales.The food menu on the other hand was quite small but had interesting selections. Basically for a general idea, 5 different burgers, 4 different appetizers and maybe 5 sandwiches to choose from. I believe I also saw 3 different dessert. Ok so the Empire burger was definitely different. 50 percent bacon and 50 percent Angus beef with cream cheese, mixed greens, 1 fried egg, with a little maple syrup on a pretzel bun. I definitely was quite hesitant about this but I wanted to give it a chance. 3 different kinds of flavors clashing but somehow they worked together. I never thought about adding cream cheese to a burger especially on a pretzel bun but it was great. I typically stick to cheddar or pepper jack unless I'm eating a mushroom burger. At that point I will use Swiss cheese. I can't quite explain the taste because it was so bizar but in a good way. I would surely give it a chance at least once. Very well portioned to might I add. The fried egg was almost as big as the bun and was well put together. $16.00 The Poutine fries were..... I believe unsalted with cheese curds, sour cream, and I think cheddar on the bottom layer. If they were salted I apologise. They were flavorful and I would order them again. $9.00 At the top of the menu they ask "please no substitution" which may not sit well with others if your not a fan of certain ingredients added to your meal. I respect the art of food so I gave it a chance. Not a bad meal in my opinion but I would say definitely an acquired taste. Beautiful view on the deck and in the sun with table umbrellas. I very much enjoyed this place and I may return sometime in the future. This place is defiantly the atmosphere you are paying for so I give Empire 3 stars. My burger came out looking like raw sausage on the inside. I ordered medium rare. It was my first time sending food back. The waitress was incredibly accommodating, so I tipped her well. We got home and my wife has food poisoning from the chicken sandwich she ordered. This seems to have a trend with this place. I saw another review say that the 50/50 burger/bacon meat (which is was the meat I had ordered) cooks differently because of the bacon. Not a good idea to cook raw bacon inside of raw beef. While ignoring what seems to be a trend of sanitary negligence, the food wasn't terrible, but it didn't stick out all that much. Atmosphere was nice and the service was good. If a friend asked me if they should go, I would tell them the food is not worth the sanitary risk. read more

I think this is getting a higher review than it deserves simply because I love the space. I love the decor, the hip feel and the rooftop bar.. amazing!! I put in my name on a Friday night and got a confirmation for 8:45. We get there around that time and we were told our table wasn't ready yet, and we also had to pay a 10 cover if we wanted to check the downstairs area since there was a band playing. We paid the cover and headed up to the bar. I was told that I would get a text when my table was ready. The bar was pretty crowded and trying to squeeze in to order a drink at the bar was quite challenging. I took a look at their cocktail menu and I went with a wildflower, a gin drink with orange bitters, simple syrup, lemon juice and st Germain elderflower liqueur. My drink was fantastic, so fantastic that I chugged them all night! We were lucky to snatch up two seats at the end of the bar and we decided to just order our food and eat there rather than to wait for our table. It's a pretty good thing that we chose to eat at the bar because the confirmation "your table is ready" never came. That was pretty disappointing, they just forgot about us. Anyway, for dinner I went with the stk sandwich, steak on ciabatta bread with greens, mushrooms, onions and bleu cheese. I was a bit skeptical because I am not a fan of bleu cheese but OMG.. the sandwich was amazing! Plenty of steak, so full of flavor, and very hearty. I only ate half and took the other half home. My sandwich came fries and those were just ok. All in all we had a great night out, great food, drinks and we also got to hear the band play. First of all whomever designed and printed their menu needs to be fired, the font is beyond tiny. Combine the tiny font with a poorly lit dining room not to mention the light bulb over our table being burned out adding to the darkness and menu fail. I was embarrassed to have to take out my phone and use the flashlight to read the menu but then as I looked around I saw people at two other tables needing to do the same thing. Onto the food. The food was actually quite good, I started with some poutine fries, they were pretty good. I ordered their Big Dipper burger which is a burger served on a pretzel roll with a side of au jus, sort of a burger version of French dip. My burger was cooked perfectly to the temp I requeated. I was slightly disappointed with the small number of burgers listed on their menu considering they bill themselves as a gourmet burger joint, there was only about 8 burgers on the menu and a couple of those were bean veggie pattie and turkey burgers. Now onto the service. Service was subpar. Rushed at the front end then our waitress was nowhere to be found for a while. She did stop by about 30 seconds after our food was delivered, before I was even able to take a bite but then nowhere to be found after that. Then she came by and grabbed my empty plate real quick and then the next thing you know she dropped off our check. WTF?? She never asked if I needed another cocktail which was empty for quite a while. She never asked if we wanted dessert(which we did) it was just like she wanted to flip our table and get us out of there. The good food was the only thing that kept this from being a 1 or 2 star review. Not sure if I will return, Downtown Naperville has so many other options and a couple other places like Jackson Ave Pub and Delirio that have just as many "gourmet" burgers on their menus. Based on the dozens of other reviews Empire is a solid 3 star establishment, and having lived in the area for over 30 years I know that 3 star establishments do not stay in business long in downtown Naperville. Went here with friends for a girls' night out. I hadn't been in the building since it used to be Rosebud and they've done some remodeling, including adding the retractable roof (not so practical in January but I'm sure it will be nice in summer!) We did sit upstairs and got a beautiful view of the riverwalk! All of us got burgers: the Cartel, the Shredder, the Sofia Loren, the Big Dipper, and (for me) the G.O.A.T., with goat cheese, bacon and honey. The flavors were good together though I could have lived without the honey: it made the bottom of the pretzel roll a sticky mess. Just a touch would do. A friend was contemplating their cocktail menu until she noticed that drinks were $15 each! We all agreed that that's a little steep. Service was helpful and attentive and easily split the bill for us. The only thing I can knock them on (aside from the $$$ drinks) are the ridiculously uncomfortable chairs!!
