If you've been to Momento in the Chicago Loop, then you're familiar with the concept. I was surprised Tapville Social isn't owned by some large hospitality group, and is instead a locally-run, small-ish business. The drink concept is self-pour (except for cocktails). Beers, wines, and champagnes use an RFID card, and you pay by the ounce (or fraction thereof). The good news is you can try a bonafide sip of just about everything and anything without feeling bad. The bad news is that while the cost isn't high, if you're not careful, it adds up quickly. I truly did enjoy the variety, and especially loved that they have the special glassware, complete with bases, that you may pour yourself a flight. I also enjoyed seeing how everything was organized by category, so that you may find something more your speed rather than a recent brewery experience where I am looking for something that isn't an IPA. For food, I ordered the Brussels Sprouts. While not mind-blowing, these were above average. The sprouts were pretty well roasted (not quite perfect, but not bad), and I liked the sweet, savory, and acidic notes of the bacon, maple, cranberries, and balsamic. Everything was well-balanced and I happily cleared my plate. Next, especially for a place that is largely self-service, I want to recognize my server for being kind and attentive throughout the experience. In terms of value, I feel as though their prices are around average, given the area and the product, for I am sure the tech is not cheap! The vibe is something I can only describe as brewery-esque, with brick, metal, and wood. I am less concerned about the walls, though, what I do want to highlight is how clean everything was! With the amount of hands touching everything, this is no easy feat. Final verdict: Sometimes, especially on a warmer day, it's not about fancy whiskey or food, but about simple food and drink done well. Tapville Social is that place. Yes you can pour your own beer here from the wall of taps, so between the two of us we sampled ten beers (or was it eleven?). I prefer only a few ounces per pull so I can try more flavors! We enjoyed relaxing at the bar, and we appreciated the air conditioning and the ice-cold water supplied by our friendly server. I think the concept itself of this place is what everyone should try if they're interested. You put a form of payment down, and they give you a card. With this card, you can access all types of alcohol (wine, drafts, etc) from a tap. All you have to do is insert your card and dispense the amount of alcohol desired into your glass, based on the amount you self pour is what you pay at the end (it lets you know how much) very cool if you don't want to commit to one drink/ are wanting to taste and try other things that peak your interest. Staff was absolutely amazing. Very friendly. I had an issue where I inserted my card and without knowing the tap was down, it dispensed the wrong drink. They were able to clear that charge on my card with no problem. We came on Mother's Day weekend, Saturday around 7, what I can only assume is the busiest time for them. When you first go in, you put down a credit card and they give you this plastic card (credit card shape) with a QR code on the back that you use to order from (or u can order from ur server) and u use it to pour drinks from the taps. Really cool concept - I've never seen that anywhere else and I liked it more than I thought I would. We ordered the margarita flight and, overall, we liked trying the variety, but wouldn't do this next time. Classic - this was by far the best. Great balance of liquor. You get a tiny water glass and it's kinda annoying to have to ask 10x for it to be refilled. I've been to this place a few times in the past. I typically enjoy coming more for drinks than for food, but I have had the food twice. The first time, I had tacos and I felt that the portion was small, especially for the price. This time, I had the signature burger, and it was definitely enough food and it was tasty. As for drinks, I've had their variety of self pour drinks - some great, some ok, but what's nice is that they rotate so you can try different things! You can also see what your overall bill is as it pours. I have had the margarita flight, which was ok except for the lime, which was very salty, even in the actual drink. (I couldn't even finish it). This time, I had the spiked lemonade flight which was really good. It is a bit pricy with it being $19, but it's something different and fun to have. The way you order your food and drinks here is different from other restaurants. First, you would go to the front counter and give them your ID and card. They will put your info on their Tapville Social card and you will use it to get your drinks from the dispensers that have different beer flavors. You can choose to do a flight or a glass. There are about 40 beers, wine, cold brew, sparkling wine, and cider on tap. The prices were a little high for the food, but the experience and atmosphere and the live music was a lot of fun.
