(Non)-review for optical shop only…read more I'll never know whether they're any good or not, since: I called ahead to determine the hours, was told they were open such and such hours, showed up during such and such hours, and was treated to a closed shop with a sign saying "back at 2 PM", presumably for lunch. That this was not the only optical shop where they failed to mention lunch hours is sort of beside the point, although I'm taking out my frustration here because I had specifically mentioned the hour when I was going to come by and the phone answerer didn't correct me. I suspect this is endemic to places where there's an ophthalmological practice associated with the optical shop, that is on somewhat different hours to the optician - I surmise the reception and the optical shop folks aren't necessarily on the same page. So I'm just sadder and wiser and not angry at this point. You are similarly cautioned that calling ahead doesn't necessarily do you any good. And, seriously, this was the *fourth* place this happened to me, where they weren't there during the hours they purported to be there, so clearly this is a "feature" of small optical shops. I only mention it this time since I made a special trip after explicitly asking "will the shop be open such and such hours".

When I gave my daughter's name they said, "Oh, the doctor had an emergency and is running a little late. If you want to fill out the paperwork and wait." I asked how long. They said he'd been there in about 45-60 minutes. WHAT? Then they told me I could come back if that was easier. I looked at them, not knowing what to say. They said they tried to call but my phone number was wrong. They tied the white pages but I wasn't there. I decided that these things happen and filled out the new patient paperwork. After the last sheet, was someone else's completed forms. Yeah - you know - the ones that have their name, SSN, and whatnot. I left with my three kids unsure what to think. I went home and put my name and zip code into whitepages.com. My number popped right up. I called them, telling them I'm in the white pages. They said they didn't have my name, only my daughter's. What? I then found out his emergency was a burst pipe at his house. Nothing medical or whatnot. So...he can cancel on patients, no one like a spouse can handle a burst pipe at 1:30pm in the afternoon and no other doctor could see my kid? And...the staff is too incompetent to take information correctly or remove prior patients forms from a clipboard. Not the kind of place I want to do business with. *sigh*

Unfortunately, what has consistently taken away from that experience over the years is the front office staff--specifically, Joanne. Joanne has a long history of being dismissive, unhelpful, and at times, openly rude. Years ago, she refused to release my prescription for a snorkeling mask until I spoke to the doctor, which felt unnecessarily difficult. Last year, when I got glasses from their office, no one explained they were progressives--and when I had trouble adjusting, the process to fix it took multiple visits. There was no guidance or accountability on her part. Most recently, as I waited for my appointment, she loudly said to another staff member, "There's the girl who was a problem." I hadn't even spoken yet. When I asked to set up a time to look at frames, she said there was nothing available, despite it being well before closing. It was very clear I was being intentionally pushed away. What really stood out was how familiar this behavior seems to be. When I casually mentioned my experience to a coworker, my boss overheard and said, without hesitation, "That sounds like Joanne from Casey Vision--that's why I don't go there anymore." I've also noticed several other reviews here mentioning her by name, which unfortunately lines up with what I experienced. The doctors are great, but Joanne makes the overall environment uncomfortable. I hope the practice takes this feedback seriously, because no matter how good the care is, the experience at the front desk sets the tone--and she's driving patients away.

Despite calling the morning of the appointment to explain the situation, I was told I would be charged a "no-show" fee, and I have now received a bill for $50. This policy was never explained to me, nor was any grace extended for a long-term patient facing an emergency. This follows a disappointing pattern. I actually left this practice five years ago due to an unpleasant interaction with a staff member who was later terminated for her rude behavior. Unfortunately, the culture has not changed; the current staff remains dismissive and unprofessional. Save yourself the time, money, and aggravation by going elsewhere. You will find better prices and far more professional service at a major retailer like Walmart. It's a shame to see a local business treat twenty years of loyalty with such disregard.

I recently had to stop into Agape Eye Care in Malta after my kiddo snapped the arm clean off their…read moreglasses. We do have a spare pair, but the prescription is older and not ideal, so I called Agape on Monday to see what could be done. I spoke with the optician, Gary, explained the situation, and asked if I could order a replacement arm. He let me know the glasses were still under warranty and said, "I'll just order a new frame." Sure enough, he called Wednesday to say it was in. I stopped by after work today and the place was busy. I told the receptionist why I was there and she immediately recognized me from previous visits. Gary was helping another customer, but he saw me, acknowledged me right away, and as soon as he finished up, he quickly swapped the lenses into the new frame and adjusted them so they fit perfectly. And this is not an anomaly. It's consistent with how they operate. I can think of at least two other times off the top of my head when they've stepped in and taken care of an issue without any drama. They just fix the problem. Agape isn't the closest eye care provider to me, but it is the best, and that's why I go there. I trust the advice and expertise I receive. In the past, at another practice, I bought expensive designer frames where you're paying mostly for the name. Some were good, some were not. I recall that on my first visit there ever, when I asked Gary what he recommended, he took the time to ask several thoughtful questions and suggested a brand I had never heard of before, Ovvo Optics. He was actually wearing a pair himself. They're incredibly lightweight yet strong. I've since purchased several pairs and honestly doubt I'll switch brands anytime soon. Interestingly, I later came across an article in a magazine, I believe it was Men's Health or Men's Journal, praising Ovvo frames and recommending them highly. Most of what I read, I had already learned from Gary or experienced firsthand, but it was reassuring to see that outside validation. Agape also carries a great selection of Oakley sunglasses. I've purchased a few prescription pairs there as well. Gary sat down with me and thoroughly explained the different lens options, what each was best suited for, and the pros and cons of each. I initially switched to Agape after my former eye care office was bought out and just wasn't the same afterward. The difference here is noticeable. The staff is friendly, professional, and you're treated well. It's not a large chain, it's a locally owned business, and that matters to me. I appreciate that they stand behind the brands they carry and truly know their products. You can see I've reviewed this place twice before. I usually don't write multiple reviews for the same business unless I've experienced a problem and am giving it another chance to see if things improve. That's not what's happening here. I'm not writing because I had an issue. I didn't. I'm writing because they consistently do such a good job that it's worth mentioning again. When a local business repeatedly earns your trust, people should know. For me, it's an easy choice. I'll continue going out of my way to support Agape Eye Care.

I have had some not so great encounters over the years and when it came time for me to consider getting glasses again I was not looking forward to the experience. Honestly, I chose CJ Sabatini because of their proximity to where I live. I very much like to support local business. So, I make the appointment to get my exam and glasses and upon arrival the first person I encounter is Chris - the owner. From the minute I met him I knew I was in good hands. He was very friendly and treated me respectfully and it was obvious he appreciated my business. He was not being governed by some franchise pressures to meet sales quotas and up sell. Chris was genuinely interested in me, as a person. So much so that there would have been a small balance over and above what my insurance would allow and Chris just said "forget it" and only charged me the insurance reimbursement amount. How many places would have turned down the opportunity to make addition money - regardless of how small that amount might have been? In short, Chris is a star. His pricing is very competitive. He delivered my glasses exactly when he said he would. He is an honest, reliable, businessman and he is the only one I will purchases glasses from when I need them again. his staff is also wonderful. I, unfortunately, cannot remember the name of the young woman who is at his front desk but she is all personality, super friendly, and a pleasure to work with.
