What I want to talk about are their frita and ham croquetas. The frita is very unique and never heard or seen it before in any Cuban restaurant in the LA area. It's sandwich with beef and chorizo patty, topped with caramelized onion and crispy thin fries. Almost feels more like a burger, but a unique flavor combination. The ham croquetas, bomb. Reminds of how my wife's abuela used to make it. It's not potato base and more of a flour/bechamel base like abuela. It's a softer creamier texture on the inside with an outer crispy fried texture. Always best when eaten fresh, but still good the next morning. I feel like these can beat Porto's at a croquetas throw down! Yea, I'm going to say it, Miami Cafe's ham croquetas are better than Porto's. Only open Saturdays from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, but they have catering services for your next event or party.

My parents, in fact, owned the very first Filipino store with a Filipino bakery in National City. Their former baker now operates several bakeries across the United States. As such, I am quite familiar with discerning between a dry ensaymada and one that is delightfully fresh. Two of the three ensaymadas I sampled were wonderfully soft and fluffy. The third was acceptable, though it was noticeably drier than the other two. I appreciated the distinct flavors, and I will certainly keep The Ensaymada Project in mind for future potlucks. Their minimada offerings would make for a unique and pleasant treat to share.
