If I could rate this company higher, I would! A year ago, I had several companies come out to help fix the extreme cold happening on the 1st floor of our 1929 built brick and concrete structure home. I was a bit frustrated because they were offering cookie cutter solutions/services without really identifying the issue(s) causing the extreme cold. I called Dr Energy Service (DES) and was fortunate to have the owner, Chris Shepard come out and provide an energy audit. As you can imagine with the age of our home, he discovered there is no insulation in the walls, ceilings of the 1st floor and to make matters worse, our furnace is located in the attic, which means the solution must push heat down to the lower level! This is a unique situation which called for unconventional solutions. Chris listened, educated , and offered budget friendly options, including those that did NOT use their services. He was a man of integrity, patience, and knowledge. We were very cold, and he could have taken advantage of the situation and sold us all kinds of services; but he didn't! That spoke volumes and this year I called him back and together we determined a plan of action to warm our home. On 12/31, the crew (Jordan, Tyler, Cameron, Brayden, and Jake) came out to perform the work. The guys were punctual (8:15am), professional, courteous, and worked non stop the get the work completed in a timely manner. They kept me in the loop of the work planned and a few minor changes to the plan, that often come with an older home. I'm incredibly thankful to Chris Shepard and DES for drastically improving my living situation. My home is drastically more comfortable, my energy bills are lower, and the value of my home has increased in a way that's more durable than a new appliance or a few new windows. As a relatively new homeowner, I also feel that I have a much better understanding of how conditioned air moves throughout my house and what to look for when examining the insulation/ductwork/etc in a future home. If you shop around like I did, you will find some lower quotes and different materials. But in my opinion, this is the only way to go if you want results, and if you want to work with a professional company that can guarantee quality service. My house is a 1940s Cape Cod, with a 2nd story that was unlivable in the summer/winter. With only one supply vent, no air return, and (more importantly) old useless fiberglass from its original construction, the temperature mimicked outdoor temps and allowed conditioned air from the lower level to escape as well. My energy bills were incredibly high, and the usable sq footage of the home was limited to the 1st floor. After I requested a quote, Chris walked me through the entire house, listened to my concerns, verified why I was having the problems, and explained every potential solution in detail. Within 24 hrs I had received a similarly detailed proposal outlining the work needed and the associated costs. Had I not moved forward with the proposal, I still probably would have come out ahead, as I basically got a free lesson on thermal envelopes and how air moves throughout a home. Luckily I did move forward, and they were able to schedule the service within only a few weeks (and right before winter hit). When Chris and the team showed up, they were friendly, professional, and they covered furniture where necessary to prevent a mess. All of the old fiberglass was replaced with spray foam behind the kneewalls/under the roof, and cellulose was dense-packed in the vaults/attic space where access prevented spray foam from being practical. They redirected the existing supply duct to create a 2nd vent, and added an air return to allow better temperature consistency/airflow in the summer months. They also added spray foam around the entire rim joist in the basement, and applied blown-in cellulose in the attic space above a back addition on the 1st story. Before and during the process, they took time to explain their progress and ask questions about my preferences (for example, how invasive to be when they needed to drill into drywall/wood paneling). When they were finished, they took the time to vacuum/mop all parts of the house they'd accessed. After a month or so, I contacted Chris again because the 2nd story was still a few degrees colder than what I'd expected. When he came out the 2nd time, he found and fixed the issue (an air leak behind my thermostat, which made the furnace turn off too quickly), which brought my satisfaction with the work from 90% to 100%. read more

Fantastic Value and Amazing Attention to Detail! DES recently performed extensive work at my home, and I couldn't be more satisfied. I selected them after receiving quotes from 9 other providers. They were not the least expensive, but they were certainly the best value. Chris did a tremendously thorough survey of the house before crafting a quote. Prior to his arrival, I prepared a somewhat esoteric list of details that I wanted to be addressed during the work. My wife and I have had issues for years with a "drip" noise in our ductwork that would keep us both up at night. After having several HVAC professionals & plumbers out to take a look to no avail, Chris was able to trace the problem to a lack of insulation that allowed cold air to penetrate the house. Incredible! We bought a 70 year old home with poor insulation, terrible heating/cooling bills and pipes that would freeze. We also put an addition on the house and it made access to all areas of the attic complicated. We reached out to DES to help solve these problems. Chris was great to work with and came up with a great plan. He said if we had any issues moving forward to reach out to him. Recently we had to get up into our attic to explore the source of a water leak (not related to anything they did). We realized that our attic was not getting the proper airflow. I have a 3-br ranch with two of the rooms over our garage. These rooms have always been terribly cold in the winter, and after having our first child and making one of those rooms the nursery, my wife and I felt the need to get the house insulated. We first got a quote from a company that advertises a great amount about pumping your home's walls with injection foam, but the price was higher than we were comfortable with, and we decided to keep looking. I called DES, and Chris came out and proposed a personalized solution to insulate with cellulose above the garage ceiling/below the two cold rooms, as well as add cellulose to our attic to get it up to R49. The price wasn't low (though significantly lower than the other company's foam solution), but it was fair, and we decided to go with them. During installation, they ran into a problem where cellulose was finding its way into our return ducts in our basement. Turns out a previous owner of our house retro-fitted a boiler system and cut some corners when installing the furnace and ductwork, and there was zero ducting above the garage leading up to the bedrooms...messy situation! DES came up with a solution which required a lot of extra work on their part, blocking off and re-routing the returns in those bedrooms which allowed them to fully insulate the garage. The best part is they stuck to their original quote despite the extra work, saying that I purchased a solution from them, not just X amount of insulation. It hasn't even been two days and we've already noticed a difference comfort-wise in those rooms. We're keeping our house 2 degrees warmer and the furnace appears to running less than it did before (we'll see how the gas/electric bills are affected but I'd expect them to go down substantially). If looking at insulating your home, I would definitely recommend giving these guys an opportunity to quote a personalized solution for your home. read more

I had the pleasure to work with Chris Shepard and the Cincinnati Dr. Energy Saver crew for an insulation project on my 1960s two-story brick home. I had the usual problems; old insulating barely up to the tops of rafters, missing insulation above soffits and more air leaks than you could shake a stick at. As I was shopping around on the project, this team was by far the most knowledgeable on the subject and very honest in terms of what my attic needed. I had plenty of questions going in, and Chris had no problem sending over a number of updated proposals as I changed the scope of the project. After plenty of research, blown cellulose was a requirement after seeing its increased R-value over fiberglass, greater ability to stop air infiltration, better noise reduction and it won't make the attic a nightmare to go back into for future home maintenance. We ended up settling in on air sealing and an R60 depth of blown cellulose insulation. After getting a rough estimate on cost, I had Chris come out for a hands-on inspection to firm up the pricing. He was very friendly, respectful of my schedule and even brought some blinking balloons for the kids. He was able to identify some problem areas of the attic: leaking can lights, no insulation over my soffits, broken drywall exposing the top of my staircase and of course minimal insulation. My existing attic had an insulation level of R19 or less in most areas, so plenty of room for improvement. Since I was already doing some work inside the attic, I took on the air sealing with some advice from Chris, and I put the extra savings in the bump from R49 to R60. When our schedules aligned and the insulation day finally came, the process went very quickly. They insulated my attic hatch with 4" rigid foam, as well as built a corral around the opening for the deeper insulation. The crew doing the job kept the work area very clean, bagging the top of the attic opening during the process to limit the amount of dust falling back into the house. The insulation itself was blown very evenly throughout the attic to a depth of 18-20" with the target being 16-17" for R60. This gave some headroom for eventual settling, so the finished product is right on target. The crew placed measuring sticks throughout the entire attic, so it was easy to gauge that the job was done correctly and to spec. When the job was wrapped up the only insulation or dust that had come out of the attic that had to be cleaned up was no more than a small handful. The crew was very mindful of their mess and kept it to a minimum. With my kids bedroom doors near the attic opening, this was a relief. Best of all there was no smell associated with the new insulation in the house and you couldn't tell anything had taken place by the time it was all wrapped up. The end result easily speaks for itself. My soffits located in both bathrooms and above each tub, which had been previously cold to the touch, are the same temperature as the rest of my ceiling. The morning after the job had completed was one of the first where I had stepped into my bathroom and it didn't feel like an ice-box anymore. For an evening where the lows were already dipping into the low 30s this was great to see the work already paying off. In our house we keep the thermostat set to 70, and up to this point the first floor was 70, and the upstairs settled to 67-68F at night. The new normal is now 70-71 upstairs and 70 downstairs, with the furnace barely turning on overnight! Easily the best money I've spent on the house to date. read more

We originally called due to raccoons in our attic. The owner completed the quote and walked me through all of our insulation options. He took multiple attic pictures to help explain everything and sent them to me for my insurance claim on the raccoon damage(which was paid). He even showed me the areas that needed better insulation with an infrared camera when pointing at the upstairs ceiling. We selected DESC from three quotes. We wanted the work completed ASAP and they were able to work us into their schedule within two weeks. I had researched a lot of information about how best to insulate a house. I had a few different quotes from companies and I was looking for key things for them to say. Basically they all said, "we'll just put in cellulose." The reason I went with Chris is for two reasons. First, he looks at this from an ecological aspect. I just wanted everyone to know what a wonderful experience I had with Dr. Energy Saver. I live in a Cape Cod house built in 1930. It had absolutely no insulation anywhere and in the winter I really suffered. My home is SO much better I don't event know what to say. In the 12 years my family and l have lived in this house it has never been comfortable in the winter or summer. There has always been a cold draft of some kind that you could actually feel on your face in the winter. There were 4 people that showed up the day scheduled and they went right to work. Not only did they arrive on time, but went above and beyond to get the job done.
