Never having been, we decided to head to Engleside to grab a bite to eat. We arrived at 8:20 to be met with "Do you have a reservation?" We did not. However, being it was a Monday evening, there were plenty of tables available. Realizing we needed a 5th seat for a friend joining us, we asked the waitress if we could move to a larger table. Please note- there were MANY tables available and more importantly, the table directly adjacent to us was unoccupied and could easily have been brought over to make our current table larger. The waitress came back and said , "I am so sorry but our hostess said she can't accommodate you". We were perplexed. Plenty of room in the dining room, but they wouldn't accommodate us?!? We didn't challenge it and just stayed put. Our 5th joined us, so we shifted over and squeezed her in on our table, however, 2 people ate with the corner of the table in their stomach the whole time. We joked about it as we ate, and even the table next to us joked a bit by saying our 5th could quickly jump to their table should the hostess come in.... At the end of the meal, I tried to find the hostess just to let her know how disappointed we were and to ask her what her rationale was in refusing to move us to a larger table- but of course she was nowhere to be found. All joking aside, the 5 of us dropped over $300 for dinner but squeezed onto a table when there were no less than 8 other tables available- perhaps because we "didn't have a reservation" for an empty 8:15 meal on a Monday night- when it was TOTALLY UNNECESSARY!! In spite of the unfriendly, unaccommodating, rude hostess, we enjoyed our food and the server, who was very good. Just totally perplexed why the hostess decided that she would not accommodate us for a more enjoyable pleasant experience. read more

My family and I were in the area for a wedding so we stopped by for dinner. We were 4 plus a 2 year old and the bill was $180 without drinks....so it is a little spends. Appetizers: Lobster Bisque - quite good, a few pieces of lobster in the bisque. Calamari - really good, not rubbery at all. Perfect cook Main course: Tuna - generous portion, cooked well (to order) Lobster/shrimp/scallop fra diavolo- good, not great. Scallops and shrimp not overlooked which is good, lobster was over Lobster/shrimp/scallop in Vodka sauce - good, similar cook to fra diavolo (lobster overcooked again) We didn't have desert. $4.50 for a scoop of ice cream is a little too pricey. Overall I would recommend. The 1 star deduction is for the overcooked lobster tail, and having empty water glasses a little too often. Service was friendly though. read more

Prime Rib is my thing. In December, it was perfect! January, not so much nor was it when I went 2 days ago. In January, all 3 of us ordered Prime Rib. All 3 came out cold as was the juice on it. We told the server, she just shrugged and said "that's the way it comes out" - no recourse offered so we asked for very hot au jus which might help. It didn't. We tried to make the best of it by dunking the pieces of meat into the juice bowl and digging it out. Pouring it directly on the Prime Rib didn't make it warm at all. Thinking that was an off night (so I didn't write a review at that time), I went again with a friend & we told the server what happened last time & ordered the Prime Rib again. He assured us that he would bring it right to the table as soon as it was ready. Bingo..cold again!! Had to get the hostess to get our server. When we told him it was cold, he argued that it couldn't be as he stood there and took it as soon as it was ready to go. He obviously didn't mention our concern to the chef.The hostess asked if we wanted to order something else. We ordered the shrimp scampi which had quite a bit of water floating under the pasta. Was the Prime Rib cooked during the day and left out and just cut and sent out when an order placed and that's why it's not warm? Did the chef forget to drain the water before putting the pasta on the plate? I don't know as I'm not a chef and that's why I go out to eat but I do know what taste good and what doesn't. PS..why is everyone crammed into the bar/sushi area when you come in expecting to be seated in the fine dining Leeward room? read more

Ordered take out dinner for our last night of vacation hoping to have a nice meal. Chicken parmigiana came with mashed potatoes instead of linguine. Chicken was so rubbery and overdone you could barely cut it. Bread was stale. Salad dressing so thick it did not pour but was instead a blob. Nice restaurant A step up for a beach resort area. Have eaten here many time and never had a bad meal. Drinks good Had the French onion soap tonight usually take the rest of the evening to cool off to the point you cans eat it. Stayed at The Engleside Inn this past weekend for a much needed getaway. Doesn't matter it is January and basically everything in LBI is closed.Dog friendly location a and very clean rooms. Accomodating staff and you can't ask for more than that. Third floor suites have a nice deck and oceanview. We will be going back! read more

Terrible! Never got a chance to eat here due to rude staff. We made reservations over 1 1/2 months ago for the Leeward dinner package with a 2 night stay.It also includes a king bed and whirlpool in room for our very special occasion. When we arrived we were not told anything was amiss. When we checked into room after a 2 hour drive with our dog we found no king bed or whirlpool in room. We went to office we were told some of hotel was under construction, When asked why no one called u,s they said they did not have an answer. We drove home very disappointed and was never contacted by manager to apologize- we were told he was off that day. We would never eat or stay here again! read more

Visited Friday night for takeout. When I called in the order, I asked the person who answered the phone what a quart of their Lobster Bisque would cost. knowing that the top New England Clam Chowders on Long Beach Island cost between $14 and $16 a quart, I was stunned to hear that The Engleside wanted $32 for a quart of their Lobster Bisque considering the this soup has limited amounts of lobster meat and gets most of its flavor from cooking lobster shells. I told him I did not want the Bisque but when my order came out, it included the $32 quart of Bisque which they then had to take time to delete. Had a shrimp tempura appetizer. It tasted good and was ample but was a little soggy by the time I got it the 2 miles home. It came with a very nice spicy dipping sauce. The entree was seafood and pasta. Asked for extra sauce and they volunteered about 2 ounces. The hostess saw me look at the almost empty container and took it back to the kitchen. She came back in a few minutes with more than half a pint. Much better. I had requested that the chef add some calamari rings to this dish and they put in a nice handful at no charge. The part of a Lobster Tail that came with this dish was substantially overcooked. Got home and found that what linguini there was in the bottom of the takeout container was all stuck together. The Engleside changed their recipe for their Seafood & Pasta dish much for the better. Everything tasted OK but their preparation still needs some work. read more

We had a reservation for Mother's Day. We were seated right away. After nearly 15 minutes we left. Not one server came over to offer us water, bread, or take our orders. People came in after us and were seated and served right away. For the majority of our time there I watched two waitresses STANDING there just looking at the room. Another passed our table and screamed out "Oh shit" in front of my 9 year old. We left. The hostess, a teenager, was the only person to offer an apology. Shame on you. read more

The place is pretty, but the sushi was bland and surprisingly tiny (not small, tiny) and it was a disappointment. About $16 for a tiny little not tasty roll. We tried just one because we could not decide but once we saw it we were not ordering anything else. How about giving the customer a decent VALUE guys? Don't waste your money here. read more

The food was great. I had the wasabi crusted tuna and it fabulous. Others in my party had the steak and the sea bass and they were also terrific. Where this restaurant excels in cuisine it lacks in service, the staff was disinterested and discourteous at best. We waited at leaf 30 min for our order to be taken after seating with unoccupied tables available for seating and our waitress was actually rude. In retrospect we should have gotten up and left, but then we would have missed a great meal. read more

Don't go out to dinner much on the island, but when I'm craving sushi this is my #1 go to. Everything is fresh and there are a bunch of different roll options. Rei is always willing to modify the rolls for you if there is something you want taken out or added. I only have sit up at the bar and the service is great. It can get pricey when ordering, but for the quality of food I think it's worth it. The atmosphere up at the bar is great, every time I go, I end up making friends or having great conversations with who ever is sitting near me! Highly recommend!! read more

Went here for the Sushi based on high ratings. Huge disappointment. Although service was fairly good sushi & alcohol was overpriced & barely mediocre. Atmosphere for a beachfront restaurant was sub/par as the shades covered all views from the windows if there were any and interior appeared to be repurposed hotel conference room. Website pics are totally outdated. We won't be back sadly. $125 for dinner & we left hungry due to lack of desire to order more "so-so"sushi. Location was great however, if you stayed in the Beach Heaven area especially if you liked to bike! read more

We were there this weekend, and ate in the restaurant two of the three nights there, (the other night at the also excellent The Gables). The Engleside Restaurant food is terrific, and they also conveniently offer full room service for guests. I am a little late to the party, of course I knew the legacy but I discovered the Engleside Restaurant firsthand only last year when I came solo in October for a weekend with my dogs (welcomed mid-Sept. to mid-May). Such a good experience that I went back this weekend with my husband. This time we ate in the restaurant twice and loved it. Great extensive menu and specials, sushi, curated cocktails, good wines. We had just the most wonderful servers on each night, Courtney and Cameron, both made a fabulous impression. My sparkling PEI oysters mignonette and delectable lemony sautéed soft shells were as good as it gets... in fact so good I had the exact same meal both nights! Booking another getaway to the Engleside for both the food, service and oceanfront easy stay. Beach Haven is such a friendly, dog-friendly, warm and seemingly close knit community. I'm so impressed by all the amazing things I heard from locals and other guests about the righteous way the owners of the Engleside quickly supported their neighbors during Hurricane Sandy. They run a wonderful Inn and restaurant, pillars of the community, the kind of place I want to patronize. Bravo read more

As much as I detest the Engleside Motel, that's how much I love The Engleside Restaurant. I would give it 5 stars but it loses a star for being connected to the Motel. We have eaten here maybe 5 or 6 times and I always get the Steak Leeward, a very large portion of steak with a wonderful mushroom sauce and melted Parmesan cheese topping. It is one of the best dishes I have ever had anyplace. The Lobster Bisque before dinner is a must if you like yours sweet. The seafood is also excellent. It is a gourmet experience you will not forget. It has a very formal dining area, but the dress ranges from very formal to beach casual, it is on LBI you know. A great place to have a meal before going to see a play, at the Surfside Theatre right down the block. read more

Very friendly service at the beach bar. Some good chill live music. Food is pretty basic but good. Drinks are great. Lots of drinks with ice cream as an ingredient. Try the shipwreck. Very tasty. Definitely recommend the sand bar if you are looking for a chill place to have a drink outside by the beach and have a light meal. read more

There are three ways to enjoy this place. Walk along the beach and visit the Sand Bar for a casual outdoor lunch. Get the Cajun chicken sandwich. If you're looking for dinner with the family make a reservation for the restaurant inside and ask for the 'bar area' for the best ambiance. Order the Absolutely Shrimp, Lobster and Scallops if you can't decide. Another favorite is to sit at the bar (if you can get a seat) and enjoy surprisingly good sushi. read more

The Sand Bar is a great spot for a cold tasty beverage and lunch. Everything I have tried on the menu is delicious.

My husband and I were here last week. When we sat down I told the waiter about my food allergies. He asked, "Are you really allergic?" He then came back from speaking with the chef and told me I was too complicated to serve. We promptly left and as we walk past the owner she smiled and shrugged her shoulders... How rude!!!! I've been coming to Engleside for the last 4 summers. COME for the sushi at lunch. It is some of the best we've had between NYC, LA and parts of the US. Ray is an awesome sushi chef and can't recommend him enough. Get yourself some Nigiri and the roll with warm crab on top. Delicious read more

I was hear last night with friends who live all year in LBI. This place is one of the few up and running after hurricane Sandy. They were crowded but handled it well. I heard from my friends that they were actually a shelter for displaced families right after the storm hit. The food was very good. This place was horrible! We have been going here for a while now and have experienced good food and atmosphere but this time THINGS HAVE CHANGED! Last night we arrived without a reservation, to be told we could sit at the sushi bar, ONLY TO FIND 1 SEAT! Not only that as one of our guests sat down we spotted many open tables. We kindly asked the staff if we could sit, but we were rudely refused. Obviously these tables were far from booked. Worst of all we sat down to find no service for 45 mins., incredibly rude staff around us and ( the most disgusting) A COCKROACH OVER THE SUSHI BAR! WE knew it was then time to leave. The Engleside is one of our regular dinner spots for many years now, when visiting the island for our one week stay in a rental nearby. The sushi is very good (especially for a nice lunch from 12-2, plus with dinner in the main dining room. Our servers are always excellent, even in a packed room plus our party of 10 in the mix. Portions are quite large and always result in a doggie bag. Not cheap, but for a special dinner on LBI, well worth an evening for us (kids and adults included). read more

For appetizers my husband had the Burn & Burn roll. He said that it was good. I had the Seafood bisque. It was thick and delicious. For dinner he had the filet and raved about it. I had the Salmon with crab, asparagus & Bernaise Sauce. It was excellent. Everything was cooked perfectly and the portions are not skimpy. Entrees come with a traditional house salad (choice of dressing). Dinner rolls were very good as was the flourless chocolate cake. We'll be back! read more

after 17 years in the area, first time here. Heard good things. It did not seem particularly crowded but our server was overwhelmed. Had to remind him for water, ask for refills on drinks, etc, and he complained in my ear about 'having 4 tables' . The empty dishes piled up on the table, as other servers and bus people just walked by. Dude, ask for help or tell your manager if you need help. The food: acclaimed lobster bisque had good flavor but was not as hot as it should be, was too sweet and thick. However, everything else was excellent. Will we be back? Probably because I am hoping the service issues were a fluke. read more

I was there a few weeks ago for a rehearsal dinner. I got the chicken platter and it was pretty good. My boyfriend got the filet mignon and I of course had to try a bite. We just ate from the appetizers off the regular (not sushi) menu. It was amazing. We ordered the blackened scallops four times! The tiger shrimp and crab dip were wonderful. Oysters on a half shell had shell in it. The 2010 wine was actually a 2012. We racked up quite a bill fairly quickly.
