I genuinely love this place. It's one of the very few places in Springfield where you can find a more local farm/home to table type quality and feel. It's almost always our casual go to. We've never had anything here we didn't like, nor had any complaints about a dish. I don't generally ever eat meat, but even I was tempted to steal bites of my friends nachos...which are (sadly) awesome. I also really enjoy the dim ligting and atmosphere. I've read a few complaints about this place and here is my two cents (as I've been here more times than I care to admit).... The temperature, this place at times can be a little chilly, but seriously, just bring a light jacket or sweater... or have a drink (especially the IPA)...do you know what it would take to make everyone's body temperature to their personal liking? A miracle. The cheese sauce, well, it's not like what your going to have when you melt a stick of velveeta, and that's a great thing. Ever actually made it homemade? It's like that. The service, look, it's a local restaurant that thankfully has survived Springfield. Keeping local restaurants is not an easy thing to do. They cannot employ mass amounts of servers to be at your beck and call on a whims notice on a busy weekend night. Can it be a little slow? Sure I guess. I used to work in the food service industry so I entirely understand this concept. Perhaps others just don't? I've never had a server I didn't care for either, but we generally try and keep the few same ones. All in all I consider the food and atmosphere to be the swanky casual bar type. We ate dinner and had beers on this past Saturday night. We eat here several times a month and never have had a complaint about the food, staff, or atmosphere. We like the wide variety of beers and the fact new ones are offered regularly. The food is always good and we greatly enjoy the friendly staff. Passing through town my husband and I stopped here for dinner and drinks. Great farm to table food! Nice atmosphere with great beer made on sight. Had the pony with a veggie burger and it was superb. We come to Engrained every time we go to Springfield for a hockey tournament! Great restaurant with very friendly staff. Pick an item that has a "barn" next to it and you'll get something that's locally sourced! The horseshoe is great...try it with buffalo chicken and the pepper jack sauce. I wasn't a big fan of the Reuben...I like really thin slicked of the corn beef and his was a thicker cut of meat that I wasn't too fond of. I gave Engrained a good review a few months ago but our second visit was completely different. It was very busy but there where a couple of spots at the bar, so my wife and decided to wait at the bar for our table. We sat there for 15 minutes and 3 bartenders actually ignored us the whole time. They even took orders from people who came up behind us! Pissed me off so we got up to leave even though we had a gift card to use up and we were an hour from home. Just as we were leaving they called our name for a table. My wife convinced me to stay. Our waiter was friendly and good, and the beer was as good as the last time but I ordered the Rueben sandwich and it had so much Rosemary I could only eat half. I like their beer but without good food I don't think it is worth an hour drive. read more

I had dinner with my wife, son and his girlfriend at Engrained and it was great. They have a good menu selection and full bar if your not into beer. The waitress was the best, great service with a smile. The pot roast was amazing and the Belgium Dubbel beer was my favorite. I highly suggest this brewery for a good meal and beer. read more

My wife and I consider going out to eat a luxury. This past weekend we took our daughters and son-laws out for a birthday dinner. My daughter made reservations at Engrained for 6:30. We were promptly seated. I have two problems with the evening. First of all the place was a third full. With plenty of seating throughout the entire restaurant. We were seated at a table right next to the kitchen entry and exit. I mean literally next to the exit. The staff on several occasions nicked the chair I was sitting at. No apologies were ever given. The second problem I had was with the evenings food special my wife and I ordered. It was the swordfish. It was so badly overcooked that I actually had a half an inch of gristle surrounding the piece of fish. I could not finish it. There was nothing fresh about the whole meal. On the other hand every one else in the party of 8 were satisfied with their meal choices. Unfortunately the person paying for the meals was quite dissatisfied. The service was good and I tipped appropriately. It was not our waiters fault who seated us nor did he cook the meal. This is the fourth time that I have been to Engrained since they opened 4 or 5 years ago. I have never had a WOW experience. read more

Overpriced and mediocre bar food. Beer was okay and atmosphere was decent, but how do you have a 45 minute wait when half of the tables in the back of the restaurant were open and unused? The pizza I had was bland and tasteless. When I complained, I got a side of cold pizza sauce and plain minced garlic (to flavor it up). Wow! Finally the manager/owner came over and offered deserts or drink comps to make up for it. We had some desert, but they still charged me for the pizza. When I inquired as I got the check, he came back and said it was "policy to not comp the meal when it was prepared properly." However, he earlier acknowledged that half of customers hated the pizza and half loved it.... apparently they are happy with 50% satisfaction. But it would have been nice of the waitress to inform me of that when I ordered it. Otherwise, the service was fairly good and our waitress did the best she could despite the managerial mistakes. The also overcooked not one, but two of my friend's steaks. The owner could tell it was overcooked, but again he was charged for it. Policies of not catering to the customer's tastes and concerns will lead this place straight to the back of the line in Springfield's already overcrowded and highly competitive restaurant market. Oh, and fix the tv's... the refresh rate on half of the TV's was extremely slow and the picture was dicey at best. read more

Just had a meal at brewery this afternoon with a party of nine. Arrived at 4:15, restaurant was not busy. Was by disappointed at shortages on menu and beer selection. Service from kitchen was slow and fries were cold. Menu is overpriced for the portion of food served. Fish and chips were three small pieces and cold fries. Jambalaya pasta was disgusting, served with dark meat chicken, which is the most favorful, but chicken was from a drumstick or thigh and was full of gristle and cartilage. Pizza was soggy at best. Too many shortages on food and beer menu. They need to get it together. Seems from the other reviews they need new management team from kitchen to front of the house. Springfield has better to offer for meal, and beverage selections. Don't waste your money. read more

Can I say awesome in every way! Went there the first weekend they opend and they did have some difficulty as the Host station and kitchen were not in sync. BUT, went back and have had positive experiences everytime! The staff is friendly and service has always been prompt. Yes, they sometimes run out of items. Every restuarant has. But the reward is the food is very good. I read the review stating the beer did not taste good. really? I find their selection to be varied and there is something for everyone. As a recent transplant to Springfield I got hooked on Engrained as soon as it opened. Great decor, excellent beer (although you need to test the new batches to see if they are to your liking) great atmosphere and a friendly staff. The only thing missing is consistency with the service. As someone who frequents the bar, its always good to see bartenders like John or Danielle who have an excellent knowledge of beer and are clearly oriented in providing top shelf service. Unfortunately on an off day you may hit a bartender or server who ia a bit new (appears to be a common theme in these reviews) and your visit may not be the best. Overall a great place that I continue to reccomend to everyone; if a good atmosphere, great food and a good local microbeer are to your liking give it a shot....... read more

Have been there several times so review is over 3 visits. 1st visit was good! Beer excellent and waitress was very helpful. Had a local steak which was good but the mashed potatoes were horrible! Basically a cold baked potato mashed with a little cheese. Dry, cold and tasteless! Second visit was with a large group. Decent service but had to constantly ask for refills on drinks. Food came out very sporadically even though ordered at same time. 3rd time was the worst! Went in and no hostess! Waited and waited but finally found my party (paint get together) by myself. Was told we could order food and drinks. Waitress was not helpful at all. Just stood around and we had to flag her down to get drinks and food. Was told we could order anything off menu but no menus were offered to look at. The waitress didn't even know what appetizers they offered but wouldn't go get a menu! What class! read more

My out of town co-workers had dinner 2 different nights last week. I had a tenderloin which they said they made in house, Ill buy that, but no seasoning at all in the breading or meat. It was ok. My friend had the Rueben. We both travel across the mid-west for work and we both seek out the best Ruebens. His had a couple chunks of meat, may have added up to 1/4 lb which is probably scaled in the kitchen. Could have been nice and sliced. Second night visit, two days later with a large group. Wanted to keep it simple and had pony shoe. Sauce was good but fries shattered when I TRIED to put a fork in them. That was the consensus from all in my group, (20 people) that had fries. Beer is always awesome and I know and appreciate using local, just need to do execute better. Staff is great and all knew the beers. The paddle is a great deal. read more

I ordered a paddle of beer to go with the meal. My husband ordered a pony shoe! It was perfect and delicious. Don't forget the signature chocolate stout cake. OMG! It is a chocolate lovers dream with rich, moist dark chocolate cake and creamy chocolate icing between the layers and served with REAL whipped cream. We ordered it to go. It was brought to our table all boxed in a carrying bag with utensils just in case we could not wait until we got home. Looking forward to the next night out at Engrained! read more

My fiancé and I enjoyed our trip to Engrained very much! The food was excellent. From the cheese curds to the potato cake and lastly to the burgers. I personally wanted the Fire Alarm burger but the waiter very eloquently explained that it is extremely hot so I ordered a regular burger and he brought the sauce on the side just in case I could handle it. Damn good thing because hot is an understatement. The beers were all very clean tasting and far above average. We live an hour away but will be back as soon as we can! read more

This place is cool, but it's a crime there is no good way to reach it from the Inter-urban bike trail between Springfield and Chatham. You can do it, but you have to trudge across a field. If there were a short spur leading up to the restaurant it could become a real destination for cyclists after a hard ride. read more

My wife and I have been to Engrained a number of times and in my opinion, they have come a very long way. We went when it first opened and were completely let down. The beer was just bad, the food was subpar, the service was bad... the only really good thing was the location and the atmosphere (the building is really nice!). HOWEVER, a few months later we visited again and noticed everything had improved slightly. We decided to try it a third time several months after that and again, it was much better than the previous time we went. I think every time I go now my experience is better than the last. Now my wife and I visit semi-regulary and Engrained has become the go-to spot for my work happy hours. Their beer has gotten so much better lately and I can honestly say that I really like most of the beers they make. The food has also gotten way better. I've had basic pub grub and appetizers there a number of times that was always good, but I also got a steak once and to my surprise it was cooked just perfectly medium and was fantastic. Another aspect of Engrained that is great is their bar. They definitely have one of the better whisky selections in Springfield, with really good options for Bourbon, Rye, Scotch, and Irish whisky. They seem to occasionally get rare bottles in as well, as I once was able to get a dram of Parker's Heritage Collection there (which was awesome!). I love that they stock a variety and offer some of the most solid bottles from each style. Definitely a huge plus from me, as I prefer drinking whisky to craft beer. It seems to me that the owners really listen to the feedback they receive and do their best to make changes, which explains why my experience there always seems to improve. I'm thrilled to have another local brewpub in Springfield and will always support a local business over chains. Keep up the great work Engrained! read more
