My parents purchased their retirement home in Oceanside, and wanted the downstairs half bathroom to be converted into a full bathroom. My father has poor knees and wouldn't be able to make it up the stairs to the 4 bedrooms upstairs. I found David Enquist on Yelp, and was very pleased with the reviews so I gave him a call for a bid. I spoke with David, as well as 6 other contractors. A little much, I suppose, but it's in my nature to be diligent and find the best value for the price. I choose David because he offered the best value for the price. His bid was not the lowest, and it was not the highest. However, his ideas were excellent. I was paying for his expertise and vision, and not just for manual labor. His team was excellent to work with as well. Steve was especially great. He was courteous, professional, and cared about the product he was producing. The final full bath/suite looked great at the end. The colors and quality were excellent. We recently used Dave to do an "curb appeal" remodel on the front of our house. The goal was to give our house a nice beachy feel, rather than the 1970's look it had. Dave exceeded our expectations on the project. He gave us great ideas on the project, and really helped it to come together. The house doesn't even seem to be the same house. The neighbors love it and comment on it regularly! Wonderful looking house aside, the best part about working with Dave was he communicated with us. There was no radio silence wondering when things would get done..... There was a delay from the factory for the window we chose. The entire time waiting for the window we knew Dave was on it. He contacted the company for a status report regularly and was communicating back to us. Once the window was finally in, the remaining work was done in two days. We couldn't be happier with Dave! It was really sad. He tore apart the wood on the side of the garage saying that he would fix it but he didn't. The rains came and he kept saying that it had to dry out before he could button it up and paint it. We waited for months but since he had more money then he had put into the job he just bailed on us. I initially gave David a 5-star review until...... After spending $380.00 on a contractor and paint to fix drywall repair from a whole house re-pipe, the paint colors don't match from what David used. David used a different brand of paint from what we specifically agreed upon. He was supposed to use Dunn Edwards Gourmet Honey and Dunn Edwards Swiss Coffee and instead used BEHR and tried to have them match it to Dunn Edwards colors at the Home Depot. The colors are completely off and we now have different tan colored blotches all over our house plus we are in the hole 380.00. I thought he was a great find at first and to do something shady like this? What does he expect the outcome to be??.Most people wouldn't be so forgiving. SO, your welcome David! read more

My wife and I are very happy with the work David and his crew did. We did our research and got multiple bids before going with Enquist. We were happy with the cost and pleasantly surprised with the level of detail he went into when explaining the job. In the end, our house looks great. The work was done quickly and his crew was polite and friendly. It's not always easy having a group of strangers around your house/family all day, but these guys were great. Some very small detail things worth mentioning but NOT worth deducting a star for: 1) There were some obvious bird droppings on a downspout that were painted over rather than removed 2) Stucco patches are done without adding texture 3) Trash isn't removed. Although, it is collected nicely and paint cans are prepped for proper disposal These small issues are exactly that, SMALL. Things only noticed by a homeowner walking around with a fine-toothed comb. Stunning transformation of our home! Dave's highly professional and experienced team did it all -- from painting to building a 1300 sq ft travertine tile patio, to an elegant firepit and a unique grand piano shaped arbor. Well I thought David Enquist did great work upon completetion of the project, however it turns out they must have only used one coat without primer bc a previously red wall which was painted grey turned pink after about 12 months. Our bedroom has white streaks all around the crown (color should be a polar blue). Another room totally faded in color and had to re-paint. I interviewed three painters to re-paint most of our home, which David painted 4 years ago and all have said the same thing; not great work. He didn't prime correctly and did a sloppy one coat paint job. Would not re-hire to do any sort of painting again. Overall super disappointed. read more

I absolutely love my kitchen - the paint makes it look brand new. It took a little longer than I expected - almost a week, but David works by himself and does not have a crew. David and his brother Bill are very nice people, and they have many years of combined experience in the painting industry. The reason for the single star, however, is because when we recently hired them to paint the interior of our home, they did a terrible job at preparing the house for the use of an airless sprayer and rollers. Every mirror, every sink, every countertop, some light switches, most light fixtures, and most door handles are now textured with overspray, or specked with roller fling. I was very careful to inspect the house before they painted, and there was no overspray; now, it's everywhere. Very difficult to clean off, and it shouldn't be the homeowners responsibility... It should be the responsibility of the painting crew. There are many drips of the wall color on the baseboards, and there are several roller marks on the baseboards as well. They neglected to cut-in around a handful of can lights as well as HVAC returns and bathroom fans, and the contrast is very noticeable. I asked them 3 times to patch holes in the ceiling before they painted... They got half of the holes but left the others. I asked them to prime a garage with B.I.N. Shellac-Based Primer before they painted because the former homeowner smoked there. David said it didn't need it. The smoke odor seeped right through the paint an hour after he painted it. He then told me he couldn't be responsible for the smell not going away... Which, seems fair, but not when I asked for it to be painted with primer in the first place. Three family members and myself had to paint the garage with the primer after the fact and now the smell is gone. After speaking with David once the job was complete, he admitted to me they were rushing through the job. Very unprofessional. If you're willing to admit to the person who hired you that you rushed through the job they hired you to do, then you should reconsider your work ethic. David and Bill would start around 8 am, and be done by noon to 2 pm everyday, and they finished our 2400 square foot home plus a three car garage in three of these short days. David originally told me it would take 7 to 8 days, a far cry from their actual date of completion. The job was done too fast, and attention to detail was neglected. I'm not sure where all these 5-star reviews are coming from considering my experience was so negative. I would urge anyone considering whole-house painters to research many other painters before choosing Enquist painting. I wish my experience was different, but unfortunately it wasn't. David and Bill, this is not personal, but with everything above considered, I think you yourselves must admit that the job was done with little regard to detail and a quality product. read more

Dave worked on our home spring and it is already having issues. I had to repay someone to redo all of the work on the exterior of our home. He did not do the proper prep work and just tried to put a quick coat of paint over the old paint. This caused the paint to peel and flake off. Because of this we had to pay someone to do a chemical peel of all the paint to redo the job correctly. Dave panted and did work I did not ask him to do and this also caused additional expenses to correct. He used the wrong product on the stone and caused it to become cloudy and again had to pay for a chemical removal of the improper product. He painted the inside of cabinets when he wasn't instructed to do so. He painted our banister with the wrong paint so again I got to hire someone to correct his mistakes. I went to file a complaint against his contractor license #c-33/965133 but it has lapsed. Dave in not a licensed contractor as of this writing. He demanded payment before the job was completed and when I explained he needed finish the job he exploded and called me every ugly name in the book and threatened to come to my home and get it from me" expletive." In the end, I went with him because he gave me a good price and he had lots of "years of experience." I ended up paying for it in the end. read more

He walked us through every step of the process, giving us tips on which colors and what type of paint would go best for our house. The job was clean and tidy, despite our uneven ceilings. David is also affordable, considering the quality and time he put into our house, it was very well worth it. I'm not the easiest client when it comes to color. David was very patient when I had to postpone my kitchen cabinet paint job for a day in order to decide on the paint color after changing my mind twice. He painted numerous sample boards for me, pointing out that I needed to view them in the light where the cabinets were since lighting makes a difference in how the color appears. Because of his suggestion, I changed and improved the lighting in the kitchen. David's attitude is that what matters most is that the customer is happy and he'll go out of his way to ensure that.
