The food was good, and the service was decent. The serving of rainbow sashimi salad is really for two people. I was there for dinner with friends and had a lovely time. My only gripe is that I left the restaurant, forgetting my leftover box on the table, and when I came back within five minutes, they had reset the table and thrown away the box I had forgotten. My friend and I were in Solana beach, heading back to La Jolla, stopped by Ensui for lunch based on Yelp reviews. We sat at the sushi bar. The place is small, decorated nicely, quit an extensive menu. Our server Frank, came over to take out order of drinks and sushi, oddly not writing any thing down but verbally relaying our order to the sushi chef. I asked the chef if they had Uni (Sea Urchin) which they did, I asked what the MP was and was told $15-$16 per order, I added 1 order onto our order. We ordered: 1 Yellowtail Tiradito and Protein Roll, 2 orders of Salmon Nigiri, 1 order of Sea Urchin Nigiri, 1 order of Fresh Water Eel Nigiri and 2 orders of a Spicy Tuna Handroll. When the sushi was being handed to us, there was Yellowtail Nigiri which we did not order, lost in translation from Frank to the sushi chefs it was suppose to be the Yellowtail Roll. The sushi chef quickly wanted our plate back took off the yellow tail and handed the rest to us. Honestly bad business practice. They should of said "our mistake, enjoy the order of Yellowtail on us and hope to see you again." Quit frankly you place the order in front of us and take it back, standard health code: you can't serve it to someone else, it should be thrown away. Second note: when we got our bill the Uni was $18 per order, again I was given the wrong market price the sushi chef should of known. I excluded the habanero because that is the ingredient that makes this dish spicy. Excluding the habanero, I didn't feel much heat and I am on with that because I prefer the heat of the wasabi instead. This roll was extremely delicious! The bottom base of the sushi had the creamy elements (krab and avocado and shrimp tempura), the middle had the "spicy" but not really elements (spicy tuna), and then the top had the citrus and herb elements making every bit well balanced of creamy and citrusy. And I love how their was NO RICE - predominantly FISH. I loved everything about this roll. Presentation was on point with the clean details of thinly sliced avocado staggered and wrapping the rice paper, to the paper thin slices of lemon. Service not so much - table and seats were not very clean (had to remove crumbs before sitting), ordered large beer (server came back saying they had run out, next I said draft they said we have issues with the machine, last he offered a small beer and explained how small it will be :) and then said that's 2 dollars cheaper than the large (who would have guessed that). This new sushi restaurant was rather difficult to find as the suite was tucked away to the right (west) of Gelson's at the Del Mar Shopping Center off Via De La Valle. The interior was neatly decorated and could probably hold around 50 customers. The owner, who also ended up being my server, greeted me upon my arrival and said I could sit anywhere. The large one-page menu was chock full of appetizers, entrees and sushi. I wanted to get a couple of specialty rolls and some nigiri. I ended up picking the Ensui and F-Zone for the former and the king salmon and spicy scallops for the latter. The nigiri came out first as two pieces each. The quality was good for the price. The namesake Ensui roll was a bit pricey at $18. It was made up of blue crab, asparagus, shrimp, avocado and a topping of yellowtail along with a side of jalapeno garlic sauce. The F-Zone roll was more reasonable at $12. It was comprised of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, albacore, radish, and shiso along with a warm spicy garlic sauce. The size of each of these two rolls were on par with the competition elsewhere. The service from the owner was great. I think the place will need to advertise to make the public aware of its presence in this part of North County. read more

Came here at 12PM on a Sunday and was really surprised to be the only ones at the restaurant. Service was super fast and our waiter was really attentive and kind. Here's what we got: - Rainbow roll: A classic. So good and definitely something I'd get again. - Stuffed jalapenos: This was also super yummy! They were filled with spicy tuna, cream cheese, tempura crunchies, and topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce. So so yummy, definitely recommend getting as an appetizer. - Shrimp fried rice: Solid fried rice with lots of shrimp and veggies. I don't know if I'd get this again because I would rather get another roll :-) Knocked one star off from an overall really great eating experience because the owner was really distracting and seemed a bit arrogant. Rather than it being just me, I have assembled 30, now 40 people who rotate in and out called Chef Marian Foodies, that promotes these events on San Diego Foodies, Carlsbad Foodies and Euro Lovers & Friends. Meanwhile, we are talking about Ensui Sushi today. You know it's a good event, when people call and email that same night and the next day to say what a great time they had! That's my kind of dinner! I started by doing something different. When you go there, order a 6 course menu. You can make the courses what you like, but this is my recommendation: Soup or Salad 2 pieces each person Cilantro Lemon Roll Potstickers - Fried and Steamed Yellow tail and Salmon Collars Everyone picks a roll each, to share Tempura Green Tea Ice Cream Judy says: "the soup has a really rich taste.... very good". I personally loved how big their salad is, but I will say their soup has nice size pieces of tofu, seaweed and mushroom pieces. So much better than what you usually get. The lemon cilantro roll is palate cleansing with salmon and a couple of pieces after soup or salad is a great idea! Comments: Our Aussie friend Mike says: "The Oysters are amazing... a really good value". He ordered a second round on him! About the rolls: "Nice blended flavors" says Renee. "They are all so good".  Ron says, after a few drinks: I would challenge my grandma for the Magic Mike Roll". Nance Ann says: "The service is utterly amazing here" (talking about Nico). So good. We had visited Ironside Fish & Oyster weeks before and their large Oysters Rockefeller was our favorite...... until we came here. And when we finally got to the last course, Bob says: "Perfect ending to a perfect meal. I do not need anything else". I think that's how we all feel about this evening out. Would caution gluten intolerant folks. Informed server of a gluten allergy and asked about sauces on the simple sushi maki order, he said it was fine. Gave us gluten free soy sauce for the table. Sushi came out with fresh wasabi which we knew from previous experiences has gluten, asked to double check and the chefs or other server knew there was "wheat" so the order went back. Anyways we had our hopes up for this place in Del Mar but have had much better and cheaper sushi elsewhere (and safer for my gluten intolerant wife). The fish was incredibly fresh and I was told it gets brought in fresh everyday. We ordered the Solana, Mango Madness, and Yellowtail Tiradito. The Yellowtail Tiradito was thick slices of yellowtail topped with ponzu sauce and jalapeño. The Solana was a rice roll topped with yellowtail and jalapeño slices. Great sushi. We walked in at 5;00 on Sunday evening and was seated right away. Started with the coconut shrimp, good sized shrimp fried well. Also shared the albacore tataki which was like a sashimi salad. Pretty filling with all the avocados. Both our fav was the magic Mike roll. This was a no rice protein roll with different types of sashimi. Had a kick to it but very fresh and enjoyable. Would order the roll again. Service was comparable to fast food.
